I've seen this pic before.

It's called "Dreaming" by Peter Przybille. Here's his Flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterprzybille/3915636451/in/faves-matthewwolfe/

Edit: In the description it says it was taken in Northern Norway.

What breed is this? looks awesome

[–]kupokupokupo 2 points3 points ago

It's an Alaskan Malamute - they are often mistaken for Siberian Huskies. The markings on the dogs differ a lot - the widow's peak with the edging on the ears is found on a lot of Mals.

Malamutes are used for heavy hauling because they have a larger bone structure and deeper chest (they can pull about 1,000lbs). They never have blue eyes.

Huskies are a bit smaller and faster which makes them good for sled racing. They often have blue eyes.

Looks a little more slender then a husky there. I really want to get a Tamaskan, I don't know if you've heard of them?

[–]kupokupokupo 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but I'm not really into designer breed dogs like the Tamaskan.

each to their own

Malamutes will grow up to be much, much larger than a husky, easily twice the weight. If it looks like it outweighs you, it's probably a malamute.

The ears on a husky are set closer together on top of the head pointing almost straight up, and a malamute's ears are set a little further apart and point out and up.

Malamutes tails also tend to curl all the way around with the tip touching or curling around it's back again, where a husky's tail tends to point out and up.

It's pretty easy to tell the difference when a husky and malamute are next to each other, not so easy on their own unless you own one.

Well, I do own two Mals which is why I thought to respond. I've been showing them since they were each 1 year old. Most Mals are under 100lbs... they are extremely strong but they don't usually outweigh a person unless they are obese. That would disqualify them from a show.

Reddit doesn't seem to like Malamutes. Every time I mention them I get downvoted or receive a ton of Husky replies.

[–]mylastbreath 1 point2 points ago

Yes you're correct now that i think of it... I've seen some that were 50+ KG 10 to 20 kg less than i weigh (and i am not a large man by any stretch of the imagination), but some have sure looked like they could outweigh me so I'll stand by my original statement that if it looks like it outweighs you, It's probably a malamute.

I think huskies are certainly more popular, but i have no idea why anybody would downvote malamute pic or comment, they are absolutely beautiful dogs.

Looks like tundra. And that's an Alaskan malamute. Is this from Alaska?
