I'd readily donate money to organizations like this, than organizations that support humans who choose to procreate when they cannot feed and clothe themselves.

animals are innocent, they've been here millions of years.

Yea because fuck those kids who chose parents that were lazy deadbeats. They aren't innocent at all!

[–]Mavlis 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, agreed with this sentiment. People who make this argument (the one you clothed) are generally pretending to be ignorant about the child's perspective in the matter - would it be nice if the parents had been more responsible? Sure - but at this point you can't do anything about that and, as you said, are essentially saying "whelp kid, sorry, we fought for you to live even though your parents made bad decisions but now that you're alive, go fuck yourself."

Isn't it at least a little reasonable to assume that these people don't really know any better though? It's not like they have real education systems to teach them about sex and procreation, or readily available birth control... It seems like making the assumption that people in third world countries should inherently know everything about our idea of responsibility and understand basic biology is a big leap...

Unless we're talking about different people here.

Just because a guy is helping an elephant and smiling doesn't mean this organization doesn't pay their executives seven figures. Either way, organizations paying their executives seven figures (eg. Red Cross) can be much more legitimate than organizations that don't (eg. Invisible Children).

[–]GradualNihilist 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea, it sucks that freakin' nations were so focused on winning wars that they failed to see the future outcomes. I mean landmines are a real problem, I can believe they are still around to hurt elephants! It doesn't really matter that it was an elephant, no living creature should suffer such an injury. By no means, should countries let mine fields exist. I mean, what is the meaning of mines post WWII? They serve no purpose anymore. And nothing we say or do about it even matters because it is all meaningless.

[–]Brohemond 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They actually do serve a purpose, albeit a horrible one. The Taliban and Al Qaeda use landmines to cripple Allied soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, because a crippled soldier is a drain on resources. Dead soldiers aren't so much.

[–]_Aether 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dead soldiers - money spent training them, gear and supplies, transportation and sending the body back. Also the government might have to pay the family or something? Not really sure, but it seems like the death of your soldiers would be highly costly, both economically and in terms of troop attitude and spirit.

[–]visplaneoverflow 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is very costly for soldiers to die, and takes a toll in a less measurable way - on morale. It's common for people who know very little about war to say things like that though, that they don't give a damn who dies - even if we're being strictly pragmatic, no good general wants that kind of blood on their hands if they can avoid it.

[–]DGCFAD 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a 1 time fee to send a body home, but to keep one alive in the hospital for X amount of time is a huge drain on available medical staff and money. Look at the bullets used in most firearms today. They're meant to penetrate and go through cleanly, leaving the soldier wounded rather than dead.

[–]Brohemond 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Look at it this way: a dead soldier costs a lot of money, yes. That's a lot of money spent training the soldier, and a lot of money for reimbursement. Troop morale can go down. It costs a lot more money, though, when the soldier is maimed because you need to pay for the hospital bills when the soldier returns, which can include costly and lengthy rehab. You also need to pay the soldier welfare if he can't work (which is likely). Finally, if a soldier falls in combat, his comrades aren't likely to secure the body until after the area is secured. However, if he is simply wounded, his comrades will likely rush to him to secure him and give him the necessary medical attention to make sure he survives, leaving them exposed and unsafe. Even if they rescue their comrade, and get him back, the sight of a soldier wounded by a mine is pretty demoralizing to a unit, and can do much more damage than a dead soldier. It's pretty disgusting.

[–]thepeterjohnson 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is, unfortunately, true. A wounded soldier in the midst of a minefield also compels his comrades to come to his assistance, often to their own detriment.

[–]Enzcat 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Since their inception, landmines have given a grand total of zero fucks.

[–]byramike 2 points3 points ago

This is why I refuse to wander around in forest/grass in most foreign countries where modern wars have taken place. I'm terrified of old landmines. America hasn't seen a war here in a very, very long time, and we're lucky for that much.

[–]hypnotoadglory 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We really, really need to get rid of landmines.

There is no safe way to remove them or disable them after their use. They're one of the most horrible weapons in war, the whole thing disgusts me.

If you visit Thailand and want to see elephants, don't just go to any of the dozens of attractions you'll see advertised. Most of the elephants there are badly mistreated, and only recently have places like this one started rescuing the abused elephants and letting people interact with them in a natural setting.

[–]heybeautifugly 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hey guy, I'm actually planning to go to Thailand this summer. Would you mind recommending some places near Bangkok and Phuket where elephants can be seen (and hopefully interacted with) and are not abused?

[–]MolePlayingRough 11 points12 points ago

The only one I've been to is Elephant Nature Park near Chiang Mai, where you can help feed and bathe the elephants in a natural setting. The Wildlife Friends Foundation is the only one I know near Bangkok with a reputation for being ethical, it seems to have mostly good reviews.

I wonder if the elephant realizes what humans are doing for it. I'm sure it felt pain when it lost its' leg, and probably noticed the walking handicap. After getting the prosthetic attached and the condition of life rebounding, I wonder if the elephant felt any compassion like humans do when someone improves their life. Food for thought.

[–]GimmeCat 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It does realise what the prosthetic is for. Elephants are incredibly perceptive about themselves and the world around them. They have a sense of self-awareness, such that they understand situations where (for example) their weight can harm/crush people: see any video of an elephant giving a 'massage' to a tourist. They also understand the plights and difficulties of other individuals, most noticable when they are mourning family members, but also during videos like this where they understand the danger of a calf drowning and it being too small to climb up the bank without a path being dug out for it by an adult. Very awesome, very intelligent creatures. :)

[–]succulentmeatymorsel 4 points5 points ago

I was just there last week. It's at the animal sanctuary outside of Phnom Pehn. Just so you guys know, the standards for a wildlife reserve in Cambodia are way lower than the western world's. The elephants were made to do tricks, prodded with bullhooks, and the other animals were kept in small cages. There is also a monkey with only one foot. He's cute, but a total grump.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still grateful for organizations like this. Also, instead of just mindlessly upvoting, go make a donation to your local SPCA or the WSPA.

This is nice, but is there any functional reason for the device to have toenails? I mean... come on.

I met that elephant a few months ago! Her name is Motola and she lives at the FAE (Friends of Asian Elephants) hospital in Lampang, Thailand. It's a really wonderful organization and one of the few elephant related places in that part of the world that doesn't just house elephants for the benefit of tourists. If anyone is interested in more info/pictures/video, send me a message!

I know this elephant, I don't remember his name but the story was that poachers came to get his ivory, they blinded him with shots to the eyes, but he flipped their jeep and killed them all. Bamphant.
