Did anyone else expect her to hit a wall or something?

Yeah, I was so scared of it turning out to be an untagged gory gif... Happy it was just a really awesome ride!

Expect, hope... you pick the word.

Me too. Why did Reddit do this to us?

[–]crashnburn753 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep. I expected the pool to be smaller and that she'd bust her legs on the edge of it or something.

I did. And then my first thought was "Son, I am disappoint. " Cool ride, but I want the cool crash that was my scumbag brain promised me!

i live in colorado and we have one of these rides at a local water park called Water World. [video proof]

[–]Theoretician 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been on that. It's some scary shit. You feel like you're going to fall off and kill yourself on the wood tracks. And when you're done you don't really remember enjoying the ride at the end, just enjoying the fact that you didn't kill yourself going 30 mph on a plastic sled...

2/10. Would not recommend...

Internet high five for saying what i was going to but with proof. I suck at that ride never get very far

It's in a portuguese waterpark in the algarve. It's actually pretty fucking scary when you're at the top.

[–]baruch_shahi 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How tall is it? It's hard to tell from this gif

[–]saulr 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've also been, and (at the time... 3 years ago?) it advertised as the tallest ride in Europe. I can't give any hard stats, but it was pretty damn high.

Edit: after a bit of Googling, it seems to be 36 metres (118 feet)

[–]touchy610 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That doesn't look very tall. Damn.

Then again, I'm surrounded by water parks where I live.

Edit: Yeah, it's only about 70 ft.

[–]saulr 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

70 feet? Mind citing your source?

This source claims that it's 36 metres (118 feet): "The water park algarve has a Kamikaze, you go from 36 meter high in the sky to ground zero in 4 seconds...this is the highest in Portugal!"

http://www.algarvehousing.net/activities/water-parks/

[–]touchy610 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're talking about a different ride than the one in the gif. The one in the gif is called the Banzai Boggan, and is about 23m (75 ft).

source (Notice how the Kamikaze has dips, while the one in the gif is straight, like the Bonzai Boggan)

[–]preppypoof -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

only??? that is crazy high for a ride where you are not really secured in by anything

[–]touchy610 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We have a 120-ft-tall vertical here. The first time on it, you feel like you're definitely gonna die for a split second. But then you go through with it, and you have to do it like 7 or 8 more times. It's awesome. I love slides like that.

There's also a 90-ft-tall mat slide (exactly like this one), and it's a lot of fun, too. I fucking love water parks.

[–]VOICE_OF_REASONING 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Tallest ride in Europe? How small are your Ferris wheels and roller coasters? Right now you have me thinking the slide that is at the public pool down the street is the same size as the tallest ride in Europe

[–]touchy610 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He has the ride wrong. The tallest ride in Portugal is at the same water park, but he's getting the one in the gif and the tallest ride mixed up.

[–]horsesemen 4 points5 points ago

I get a season pass to my local waterpark every year and usually go a couple times a week. I'm a grown man, almost thirty years old, and as often as I go to the waterpark, I only do the big slides once or twice a year. I do stand-up comedy in my spare time, I DJ for a living, and I have absolutely no problem talking to girls. I can do a lot of things fearlessly. Going down these kinds of slides is not one of them.

We have this at West Edmonton Mall Waterpark too and it pretty much works for everyone; there may be some kind of weight restriction but I think that it's pretty high.

The people that own that place also own the mall of america which is getting a waterpark and they also own a mall project in New Jersey which is going to be larger than the mall of America is currently.

[–]Pink_Zepellica 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am 100 KG (I think that is roughly 220 lbs for Americans) and this type of ride still works for me.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok, cool, need to find one then!

[–]ShatterWulf -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would think that a since a bigger person has more mass you'd pick up more speed on the ramp, still allowing you to skim across the surface.

[–]crunchytacos 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, but they would have more momentum

[–]Im_That_Guy21 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, all the potential energy of the person at the top of the slide is converted to the kinetic energy at the bottom, so the gravitational potential energy at the top (PE = mgh) is equal to the kinetic energy at the bottome (KE = 0.5mv2 ). Setting the equations equal:

mgh = 0.5mv2 , you can see the masses cancel, and the velocity of a person of any mass is

v = (2gh)1/2 , where g is the gravitational constant (9.81) and h is the height of the slide.

Science!

[–]Harriv 18 points19 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just assume no friction or air resistance! :)

[–]ShatterWulf 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very cool, I certainly don't mind being corrected.

[–]crispyfry 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This isn't entirely true. The distance the skimboard will stay on plane after it exits the ramp depends in part on the surface area loading, which is roughly the person's weight divided by the area of the board. Lower loading means the board will stay on plane longer.

[–]Im_That_Guy21 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very true! However my comment was a reply to the claim that a heavier person would be traveling faster, so I was only considering velocity of a person leaving the slide, not the distance traveled afterwards :)

[–]Saganomics 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So if you're a bigger guy, the board should go up in size proportional to your weight?

[–]dwf 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but then you have more friction (both on the slide and against the air) to deal with.

[–]jimtracysmyhomeboy 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Magic, got it

[–]Nocturnhabeo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

so then it isn't really the speed so much as the total energy is just higher...

[–]Im_That_Guy21 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What we see as speed is just greater kinetic energy, so the two statements are really the same thing. A higher slide (ie; greater initial energy) would correspond to greater kinetic energy at the bottom, and we would see that as the person moving faster.

[–]Nocturnhabeo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

would a person have greater kinetic energy if they weighed more?

[–][deleted] ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[deleted]

[–]Nocturnhabeo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah that is kinda what I was originally saying that the reason it works for a big guy is they have more total energy so the higher resistance created by their weight would be somewhat mitigated. (I am aware that this is mostly in lay I don't remember most of the terms from the last physics class I took... in 2000.)

Water Country USA (somewhere in Virginia) has something like this, except you sort of race someone who is next to you. Maybe to see who gets further.

My friends and I drunkenly decided that we should try to stand up on the mat once it reaches the water. All I have to say is the water is very shallow, and has a very rough bottom..

You sit on the board which feels more like a car bonnet, then some sort of winch cranks you up to a 20 degree angle so you're basically tipped straight down and then the thing stopping the bar is released and you go down at an amazing speed. Terrifying.

When Amazons (Jindalee, SW of Brisbane) was around they had one of these, and the pool wasn't that long.

Everyone got the same advice - when you hit the pool, put your hand down to slow down and stop.

I didn't. :)

As a fifty kilogram kid, I hit the end of that pool still going fast enough to slide up the ramp, jump the pavers, and land in the bushes in the garden bed.

The life guard was pretty was pissed.

Tried the same thing at Seaworld on the Gold Coast but the boards were way heavier and the pool longer.

Little tip, don't ever go on the free fall drop unless wearing a g-string. The ride turns whatever you're wearing into a g-string, and board shorts are awkward to dig out of your butt crack in front of a crowd.

The free fall drop also is steep enough that I would literally free fall for a few seconds - nothing touching my back or sides.
