A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

It'll never happen but FUCK YES I loved Freelancer, I actually played the shit out of the multiplayer too

[–]elj0h0 35 points36 points ago

this game was so good I started playing x3 just to get that feeling again

[–]Vandrel 54 points55 points ago

I tried to play X3 for the same reason but I just couldn't get into it like I did Freelancer.

[–]akgreenman 26 points27 points ago

I wanted to like X3 so much, but I couldn't invest the time it took. Traveling and missions were pleasant and fun, but soaked up so much time. In my own world of increasing obligations and responsibility, free time must be budgeted for maximum entertainment, and sadly X3 was further down that list.

[–]iamdanhi 9 points10 points ago

I tried X3 TC and couldn't get into it. But I'm looking forward to X3 Rebirth.

"...it will feature a whole new user experience, it is easier than ever to start with, and remains as deep as fans expect it."

[–]Thisoneisanaccount 12 points13 points ago*

I am a huge fan of the X-series. My only word of warning is the following: Reirth will be an advanced game, and it will have a step learning curve whatever anyone says (developers included - it is in their blood!). I hope it will be awesome, but I am very sceptical that they will give us a intuitive and easy to use interface - at least in conjecture with an advanced game. They have had a lot of games to realise that, but have always managed to create some horror stories of control. A prime example for me is combined stations. Creating a self-sufficient station system without mods and support is/was hard. Don't get me wrong, I love the series and will play it - and while even, just a little bit simpler of a UI will help, don't hope for a revolution.

I always found the story in the game laughable and only played my own game where I became a huge megalomaniac - taking over the galaxy, step by step and becoming a biotic god, err..!

[–]rydrid 5 points6 points ago

Ooh, hopefully they remade the user interface, that shit always bugged me in X3

[–]ortucis 9 points10 points ago

I bought X3 for same reason.

During tutorial mission I actually fell asleep when you have to goto a point (or I think it was first mission) for objective. Then I suddenly woke up and almost fell off my chair, only to notice that my motherfucking ship was still on its way to the fucking objective.

Yeeaah. Seriously? Putting (sort of) real life space travel in a space game? I mean Freelancer had some moments where you just travelled and did nothing but damn, it didn't take forever (cause of being more arcady I guess). Suffice it to say it was money wasted and I don't even want to think about installing X3 again (the visuals were good though).

While we're at it, the new X3 sequel looks promising.

[–]Tatterdemallion 17 points18 points ago

Yeah, the real time space travel thing is a bit of a pain. That's why they implemented a thing called the SETA drive, a ship component, which speeds up gameplay anywhere from 200% to 1000% (this can be changed in the game options, the default is 600%). "j" is the default key to activate this drive.

While I'm here I might as well plug the X3 subreddit as well: X3TC

[–]Heroshade 8 points9 points ago

You can fucking change the SETA!?

[–]frymaster 7 points8 points ago

it was set at 6x because it gives the AI less time to react to obstacles (since the distance travelled between "ticks" is increased); given the the autopilot is not-so-affectionately referred to as the "autopillock" by x3 fans, you can see why they set it conservatively. But yeah, in the gameplay options, you can set it up to 10x.

[–]FlippyWippy 1 point2 points ago

Lmao Autopillock fucking so true.

[–]G_Morgan 1 point2 points ago

Beyond true. Once I bought a brand new Yaki M2 (and those things are expensive because black market and all that) and lost it in 20 seconds due to the autopillock.

Because the Yaki Shipyard is in a non-equipment dock system you can't equip new shields on the ship at purchase. I sent it to my HQ in Savage Spur. So my glorious destroyer left dry dock with 200MJ of shields. Of course it crashed into my 1GJ of shields M6 when I undocked and tried to jump out of system. Neither ship saw a problem with this course of action. 100M+ credits gone in 30 seconds. Bet the Yaki were laughing as they saw the ship blow up a few hundred meters from the dry dock.

[–]Switche 3 points4 points ago

Could not get into X3. Spent countless hours trying on many different occasions, but it was just god-awful boring. Even with time compression maximized, it takes 5 minutes of just sitting there jerking off to get to the next area. Maybe if there was an EVE-level of things to do, I would enjoy it. I just don't understand the underground hype for that game.

EDIT: Actually, I'd still like to try to enjoy this game, it's just that there is virtually no discernible path to know how to play to progress in the game and have fun doing it, at least without watching hours of video. Any advice is welcome.

[–]Thjoth 5 points6 points ago

Allow me to link you the X3 Handbook. It's nearly 400 pages long, but you use it as a reference instead of just reading straight through. It should help get you started.

[–]Dunge 4 points5 points ago

I love space ship games, but x3 was just boring.

[–]sentiax 1 point2 points ago

X3, also known as EVE Offline.

[–]12side 15 points16 points ago

We should get a reddit server going!

[–]blackhole12 5 points6 points ago

It ALMOST happened with Project Lonestar, a freelancer sequel briefly in development for the Xbox 360 before being cancelled: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ik9liH8OUw

[–]Trenton1 3 points4 points ago

I keep a copy of this on my old lappy - it will play on calculator - good times especially with the mods

Nice guy. Hung out with him for a bit when Iris came through Planet Pittsburgh.

[–]Creiz 1 point2 points ago

Freelancer didn't have multiplayer? Wait, did it?

[–]boong1986 1 point2 points ago

The multiplayer was great. In version 1.0 you could edit variables in an ini file that controlled movement speed, turning ability etc. I used to take on whole groups of people and they didn't even have a chance at beating me.

[–]Archyta5 105 points106 points ago

"You Jun'ko Zane?"

[–]ablivion 49 points50 points ago

I could use a good freelancer

[–]kapson 42 points43 points ago

And if we're gonna work together, please, call me Juni.

[–]elj0h0 44 points45 points ago*

freelancer alpha one dash one, I'm scanning your cargo

edit: Fixed callsign (thx slayniac)

[–]slayniac 35 points36 points ago

One dash one, dude. We dont run this place but we have an understanding with the people who do.

[–]Gycklarn 27 points28 points ago

That line. I got so fed up with it.

We dont run this place but we have an understanding with the people who do.

We dont run this place but we have an understanding with the people who do.

We dont run this place but we have an understanding with the people who do.

We dont run this place but we have an understanding with the people who do.

We dont run this place but we have an understanding with the people who do.

We dont run this place but we have an understanding with the people who do.

[–]AimlessVagabond 29 points30 points ago

"Make sure he lives. He owes me some credits." "Your concern is touching. We'll do everything we can."

Fuck, I loved that whole intro sequence. It was just so cool to me.

[–]Alucard256 10 points11 points ago

I hated it too until I ran into whoever it was that said:

"I'm from the thing-I-cant-remember... we run this place."

I was stunned

[–]mrpotatopancreas 1 point2 points ago

But whenever an NPC says that they run the place they act all cocky. Damn NPCs, acting like they own the pl-oh, right.

[–]Farkinsaal 1 point2 points ago

FOR RHEINLAND!!!!

[–]scoyne15 29 points30 points ago

You don't have anything I'm looking for.

[–]wangatangs 18 points19 points ago

Jennifer Hale voiced Juni so we've been listening to FemShep back in '03.

[–]Thryck 1 point2 points ago

Holy crap, that explains my flashbacks.

[–]FUCKING_EVERYTHING 1 point2 points ago

[–]IAmTheRedWizards 79 points80 points ago

Even if they had to crowd fund it, I'd be in on that in a split second.

Not enough truly great space flight games...not enough Chris Roberts games...

[–]dormedas 21 points22 points ago

One day, if a sequel is not released, I vow to make a proper sequel to it. It's one of my life goals.

[–]Kenar405 10 points11 points ago

Doing that is hard work - I'm a good year into making my own space game that, amongst other space games, uses Freelancer as inspiration.

[–]dormedas 8 points9 points ago

What game? Have you posted it over in /r/gamedev?

[–]Kenar405 5 points6 points ago

I haven't posted much online about it (mostly just a couple of videos of the engine), and nothing to /r/gamedev yet. I am getting ready to 'launch' it in some way in the coming months, and /r/gaming and /r/gamedev are two areas I'll be doing that in.

[–]benjick 2 points3 points ago

Could you tell us some about it? :)

[–]Vandrel 22 points23 points ago

Yeah, does it involve dragon sex?

[–]theskabus 15 points16 points ago

I'm only into that if it's 100% science based.

I love freelancer. I play it from time to time even to this day. I would highly recommend the X series of games to you (X3 terran conflict is my favorite).

Sure could go for a Sidewinder Fang right about now.

[–]immerc 12 points13 points ago

X has its faults, but it's does so many things that are fun:

  • You fly using an actual joystick (you can use keyboard and mouse, or gamepad, or whatever, but these days a space flying game with a joystick is pretty rare)
  • You get to fly everything from tiny scout ships to massive destroyers
  • It's a sandbox game: like just going out and killing baddies? Plenty to kill. Like becoming a pirate and killing good guys? Go for it. Prefer staying out of combat and instead moving wares from station to station, making profits? Yup, you can do that too. Prefer cutting out the middleman and building your own stations? Yup, it has that.
  • There are dozens of ships, each with subtypes. Each of the races has its own scout ship, its own interceptor, its own heavy fighter, its own carrier, its own military transport, and so on. Each ship looks unique, and each race has its own style.
  • Most ships can be bought, but some ships can't be bought, to acquire them you have to capture them, giving a unique reward for a fun challenge
  • There are many different types of energy and slug-throwing weapons, and many different types of missiles, and you can pick the ones that suit your play style

There are a few downsides though

  • The initial learning curve (first hour or so) is incredibly steep
  • The main plot is somewhat weak, the missions often feel almost like MMO grinding quests
  • The autopilot / navigation AI is terrible, and sometimes kills you or your ships by just driving into things, or driving through an incredibly dangerous sector instead of taking a safe route
  • Weapons are the only real ship customization you can do on your own. You can't tweak the engine you use, the shield types, the power plants, or anything like that.

To me, the game feels a lot like the other Spreadsheets In Space game, Eve Online, but with out the "online" part, with less customization of ships, but with dogfighting in space.

The autopilot / navigation AI is terrible, and sometimes kills you or your ships by just driving into things, or driving through an incredibly dangerous sector instead of taking a safe route

I was trying to get this huge freighter to Teladi space so I could have him pick up a station for me. It was like a ten sector flight, took a damn century to get there. I get them to dock at the ship yard, pick up my station and tell him to fly off somewhere to deploy it. This huge fucking ship undocks, turns in such a way that it swings its side into the station, and explodes with my 12,000,000 credit station on board.

[–]immerc 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I've learned the hard way that you either fly the huge ships yourself, or give them commands from out of sector. The out-of-sector flying AI can do things like undock from stations, fly through gates, etc. The in-sector autopilot can't do that for the life of it.

[–]r0x0rm4n 13 points14 points ago

Crap, by the title I thought this was an announcement post.

[–]Desolator001 4 points5 points ago

Yeah me too... I got so excited.

[–]herp-a-derp-a-gerp 15 points16 points ago

Just imagine, 10 call of duty games can be released in that time. :|

[–]ac1dicburn 82 points83 points ago

My first thought was "FIREFLY GAME!"

[–]Herpbees 6 points7 points ago

meeeeeee too

[–]deadlysoldier 11 points12 points ago

Firefly: The Game is just a longer version for Freelancer, to this day I call it Firefly.

Just you wait, there'll be a firefly mod for it as well.

[–]Drunner 9 points10 points ago*

For those of you interested in playing the game again, keep your eyes out for this:

Here is that Star Wars Multiplayer mod that gets a front page post every few weeks.

Current timetable for release "We are confident to reach open beta status within the coming months, however do not expect it to be March."

Here are their twitter and moddb pages.

[–]GuadoElite 3 points4 points ago

It's been pushed back and back and back over the last couple of years I've been following it ages and I'm DYING to play it it looks so sick. They've added so many new features to it and I really hope it doesn't turn out as vaporware.

[–]Remote_Start 3 points4 points ago

The team is still around but very busy. It's going to be released and run by the devs with updates, no doubt. I was a lead developer for it.

[–]GuadoElite 1 point2 points ago

Pleased to hear this. Anything in particular I will be able to thank you for upon release?

[–]gheis 1 point2 points ago

DiscoveryGC 24/7 admin here. The modding community's still super active. I've bounced back and forth between DiscoGC and FW18.whatever for the past couple years. Discovery just had a version update on Dec 30 and everyone's awaiting the second coming with Tides of War. God damn, the Freeworlds team has been doing some super neat things that get me all hot and bothered for both Star Wars and Freelancer.

Freeworlds in particular has figured out capital ship flight physics and they've added a "fleet overlay" where you can zoom way out and get a top-down view to command your fleet. Carriers are working and you're supposed to be able to spawn NPC patrols from your capitals. There's a whole bunch of other neat things too, and they've made it incredibly pretty with DirectX 9 support and texture lighting. Take some time and hit the ModDB/project pages and start watching some videos.

[–]skocznymroczny 24 points25 points ago

first TIE Fighter, then Freelancer

[–]wujack 4 points5 points ago

Amen brother

[–]closernough 7 points8 points ago

Never played it, but just from the box art the very first thing to pop into my head was:

"Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand..."

[–]ThatGuyNamedKal 15 points16 points ago

Have you played the prequel?

[–]paholg 4 points5 points ago

It's only a prequel if it's made after the original, but takes place before it. You got my hopes up that they had made some new(er) space combat sim.

[–]icephoenix1012 1 point2 points ago

I did. i loved that game. Used to have the keyboard map and everything. Always used to bug me though thta the game was on 2 discs. but still one of my fav games from my childhood.

[–]JnvSor 3 points4 points ago

That game was awesome. Say what you want about Freelancer, I still say Starlancer beats it in almost every way.

[–]Barbariandude 7 points8 points ago

I loved this game. RP multiplayer servers with custom mods were SO. DAMN. FUN.

Corsair 4 life.

Hehehe, I remember my first time going through singleplayer and thinking more guns = better, and wondering why I was getting my ass kicked in the fight in the asteroid belt with the liberty fleet while flying a freighter with 0 maneuverability.

[–]CGSColin 14 points15 points ago*

It's not exactly the same as a sequel, and I hope you'll forgive me for pimping my own game, but I'm actually working on a new space trading game in the same vein as Freelancer and others: http://celsiusgs.com/drifter/

Edit: As per badmonkey0001's comment below: it is being developed on iOS but there's a very good chance it will also be coming out for PC/Mac as I think space trading games work well there :)

[–]badmonkey0001 5 points6 points ago

You should mention that it's iOS only. Frankly, the lack of decent control choices (especially if it's one of those "moving your screen is your controller" games) and lack of being able to throw it onto a big screen easily will probably keep me away from it. It sure does look perty though.

[–]CGSColin 3 points4 points ago

I should have mentioned this, and I've made an appropriate edit!

[–]badmonkey0001 1 point2 points ago

Thank you sir. An upvote to you and good luck with your game!

[–]kchapman 1 point2 points ago

any kind of a release date?

[–]ThePoison33 1 point2 points ago

Is there a potential release date/price for this?

Looks like something I'd spend a lot of time playing.

[–]jpr123 1 point2 points ago

Ah, man, if/when it comes to Mac, I'll be snatching it up. Looks great. I try to keep game apps off of my phone so when I'm pooping I read instead.

[–]turboknight 5 points6 points ago*

I tried X3, but the lack of mouse movement akin to Freelancer made me quit in 10 minutes. God the controls were good.

I remember me and my friends playing this game for a few months, blown away by how big the game was and the insane amount of content. Then, one night one of us accidentally hit a button on the map and it zoomed out - that was when we realized that we had only explored maybe 3% of the game and we had been zoomed in the whole time. We all proceeded to shit our brains out our eyes.

[–]cormic 6 points7 points ago

All of these comments and no one mentions Elite. I feel old :(

[–]freemorph 6 points7 points ago

If you own this and don't mind some roleplaying then you should really check out Discovery Freelancer Mod. There's a good amount of people on constantly (like over 50+ to 100ish) It's great and you can join player made factions like a mining company, or be a pirate, and even fly giant destroyers. New version teaser.

[–]FUCKING_EVERYTHING 9 points10 points ago

BRB Installing this game right fucking now.

[–]Owan 2 points3 points ago

I've tried... several times. Can't seem to get it to play on my current PC :(

[–]thefridgeisopen 2 points3 points ago

Really? I've never had issues, played it on XP, Vista (32 and 64 bit) and Win 7. Just make sure you patch it and use compatibility mode. (might even help to crack it but i didn't say that)

[–]Owan 1 point2 points ago

Yea, I played it on XP, but moving to windows 7 seemed to break it, even trying to use compatibility mode. It begins loading but just crashes to desktop. I will have to look further into this issue, Freelancer was too much fun to let it sit on the shelf forever! Thanks

[–]Accollon 10 points11 points ago*

No the prequel is called Privateer

[–]MrDeath2000 4 points5 points ago

Best space game ever made.

[–]nerdyogre254 3 points4 points ago

The following phrase is burned into my brain - "free Lancer alpha one dash one, this is planet Leeds, docking ring clear, good luck out there."

Eve online satisfies my need for complexity but I need something for the dog fighting aspect.

[–]majicebe 3 points4 points ago

Freespace 3. That is all.

[–]peon47 3 points4 points ago

Infinity Universe Tech Demo

This is a pre-pre-alpha tech demo for a Freelancer-style MMO. It would feature a progressively-generated galaxy of 200,000,000 solar systems... to scale.

[–]tsnyder700 3 points4 points ago

I just remembered. My first gamertag ever for LIVE was Gamma_6... I so sad.

[–]CuriositysSake 4 points5 points ago

It's going to come out the same time Firefly starts up again or a sequel to Serenity comes out

[–]RedBeardthered 4 points5 points ago

I just replayed this game for the 6th or 7th time a while ago. Amazed at how well it held up over the years. For me it just had that easy accessibility that other space sims usually don't have. The dogfighting mechanics were solid, plenty of areas to explore, pretty good story as far as sci-fi ones go. Definitely top 3 games of all time for me.

[–]ArtemisYak 2 points3 points ago

John Ashcroft... You have been found in violation...

[–]FLYBOY611 2 points3 points ago

The money needed to make a proper sequel is too high for Kickstarter.......but a man can still dream...

[–]WWWeirdGuy 4 points5 points ago

What must be done to get Freelancer 2 going? How can we as players/consumers bring Freelancer 2 on the table?

Somebody who's smart, tell me!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

best space shooter ever. If maybe not the only one. I spent hours exploring and wandering around and inside nebulas and dust clouds and stuff. So much awesomeness.

[–]Descent95 6 points7 points ago

He'll no. FreeSpace 2 is like a billion times better.

"DIVE DIVE DIVE HIT YOUR BURNERS PILOT!"

[–]Wiccantor 2 points3 points ago

Oh Science, Yes! I loved this game. It had a great balance of story and sandbox.

[–]MonkeyDog453 2 points3 points ago

Freelancer was awesome and so was Tachyon: The Fringe. I would love a sequel to either one.

The multiplayer in tachyon was insane. It could have 100 players in a single game if I remember correctly.

[–]BorisYeltsin09 2 points3 points ago

Any love for freespace 2? I havn't played it yet, but I'm trying to decide whether to pick up freelance or freespace 2. Any reasons why one is better then the other?

I'm on an old laptop unfortunately, so that has to be taken into account graphics wise. I don't want to list specs, so just say which one will be more GPU intensive ect.

[–]kchapman 1 point2 points ago

Freespace 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. I highly recommend it and it will run on nearly anything.

[–]HeroicDanger 2 points3 points ago

I'm probably a bit late commenting but my Freelancer goes as such:

Originally played and modded Starlancer.

Eagerly awaited Freelancer thanks to beta reports from baked_potato on Lancers Reactor

Played Freelancer. Joined various mod communities including the original huge mod by (I can't recall his name!!) Rayman (?). It was the first to debut the shadow ships.

Played at Asylum 51, Freespace, Top Freelancers, Jolt Freelancer and Tekagis.

Joined the mod community on Lancers Reactor, developed some tools and joined EOA Players Consortium through Louva (?). Helped work on the Milkshape and CMP exporter for ship models.

Great times, the game had a fantastic server/client model due to Digital Anvil been purchased by Microsoft Games and them telling DA to "ship it in whatever condition". The asset files were poorly encrypted ini files, and the EXE file relied on the version number instead of a CD check.

[–]donquixote235 9 points10 points ago

  1. Install Freelancer while drooling over the thought of open-ended space combat
  2. Start the game
  3. Watch the unskippable cutscene
  4. Go meet Juni at the bar (because that's all you can do)
  5. Watch the unskippable cutscene
  6. Go buy your spaceship
  7. Watch the unskippable cutscene
  8. FINALLY take off into space
  9. Watch the unskippable cutscene
  10. Do the first "on-rails" mission
  11. Watch the unskippable cutscene

[–]55-68 5 points6 points ago

Oh come on, they have to give you a tutorial. For the tutorial to theif, I had to climb a rope.

[–]donquixote235 1 point2 points ago

And that's fine, and understandable. But it doesn't lend itself very well to replay. I mean, after I've played the game 20-30 times I think I have a pretty good idea of how to pilot a ship.

I have no problem with cutscenes, but give me an option to skip them please.

[–]Dunge 5 points6 points ago

What's wrong with cutscenes? I actually enjoyed them. I hate people skipping cutscenes.

[–]donquixote235 4 points5 points ago

I loved the cutscenes the first dozen times I played the game.

[–]MistarGrimm 1 point2 points ago

Oh yes, not being able to skip the first cutscene where they attack the ship became incredibly annoying after a while.

[–]Cain_3000 1 point2 points ago

Does anyone know where i can get this game? I played it when i was a kid, but lacked the knowledge to really do well. Nowadays if i can get the hang of games like the X series, i should be able to handle this.

Also the thing i remember the most is that I'm pretty sure that the main character was voiced by the same guy who voiced Wildwing from the mighty ducks cartoon.

[–]ReKKanize 1 point2 points ago

FUCK YES, I recently played through the single player. This game is like my 5th favourite game.

[–]MisterFlames[!] 1 point2 points ago

Good Space Games: X3:TC, Space Rangers 2, SPAZ, Darkstar One. But none of it ever lived up to Freelancer again. Such a pity...

[–]capt_tight_pants 2 points3 points ago

You forgot EV Nova...

[–]RedBeardthered 1 point2 points ago

I've asked around for games like Freelancer and these are the games people usually recommend. They just aren't the same, though. Freelancer was just so accessible. I recognize that the whole X3 series is most likely the king of space sims but it's just too much for me. Too complex.

[–]DFractalH 1 point2 points ago

Cries in a corner.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I miss this game. I miss colours server. And The Void.

[–]RaithVZ 1 point2 points ago

How about anything in the Space flight/combat sim genre? Anything at all!

[–]manobalbajwa 1 point2 points ago

a game called darkstar came out it was really similar but nothing can be as good as freelancer..i too would love a sequel but it can be a let down like i have played deus ex 10 times now but couldnt go through the new one... somethings are made once in lifetime

[–]nfs3freak 1 point2 points ago

My buddies and I would have huge sleepovers and bring our desktops to his house and lanparty it up just for Freelancer...wow, just seeing the title brings back a ton of memories.

[–]icephoenix1012 1 point2 points ago

Just wondering but did anyone ever play the prequel Starlancer? I remember playing that game over and over again.

[–]TrogdorLLC 1 point2 points ago

I had a friend that worked on the Freelancer team. They were crushed that it didn't sell well (and more crushed when they were fired.) Even now, though he's doing quite well in the industry, he's still bummed about this game tanking.

[–]55-68 1 point2 points ago

Oh, wow. This is the only game I've ever looked at the front and just bought.

[–]fruchtzergeis 1 point2 points ago

[–]Doctor_Clockwork 1 point2 points ago

Ah Freelancer the closest thing to a firefly game in the verse

[–]fractorial 1 point2 points ago

Endgame was a lot of fun when you would load up your Titan or what have you with codename weapons and nomad cannons and then go back to Manhattan and take it out on everyone.

[–]Bezulba 1 point2 points ago

Not just Freelancer but any space shooter. We haven't had a decent spaceshooter for a long long time now.

[–]SaneDunk 1 point2 points ago

[–]luxury_pie 1 point2 points ago

Ahh flying hours with normals speed through empty space or asteroid clusters to find an artifact or wormhole. That was fun!

[–]bleen0_0 1 point2 points ago

:-( for a brief moment I thought you were saying the sequel WAS coming out.

[–]mstout7 1 point2 points ago

Does that picture remind anybody of Firefly?

[–]Swissguru 1 point2 points ago

Kickstart it...please ;_;

[–]Cybrknight 1 point2 points ago

Patiently waiting for X Rebirth http://www.egosoft.com/games/x_rebirth/info_en.php. Next best thing to another Elite.

[–]Tumbler 1 point2 points ago

KICKSTARTER!!! NOW!!!!

[–]rasonj 1 point2 points ago

This massive star wars mod for it is coming out next month http://fwtow.net/

[–]HCrikki 1 point2 points ago

Forget sequels, we need this to find a new life on Steam! Achievements, cloud saves, DLC, decent netplay? Day one (re)buy! Hopefully MS games folks realize the interest in this title is no less significant than in Ages of empires and age of mythology (still not on Steam).

[–]straponheart 1 point2 points ago

A family friend worked on Freelancer, and I know from him that they actually were developing a sequel for a while. It was going to be on the Xbox though, and it sounded like it might have been dumbed down like Crimsons Skies was (cruise engines were on the cutting board).

[–]FLYBOY611 1 point2 points ago

Who was the former director of the game? We should write them emails asking for a Kickstarter!

[–]p1nk_8c1d_b00ts 1 point2 points ago

Are there ANY Freelancer servers still up? If so - how-to-connect?

[–]Heroshade 1 point2 points ago

I personally liked Starlancer more. It didn't have the openness of Freelancer, but I liked the feeling of being part of the squadron, just another cog in the war machine. At least until you have to protect Delta wing. Fuck Delta wing.

[–]Lanks01 1 point2 points ago

someone needs to make this! put it on kickstarter for funding

[–]zLurn 1 point2 points ago*

I've been waiting all my life for a sequel of The Dig. Here, more pics.

[–]Dunge 1 point2 points ago

I actually remember starting this game thinking it was some low-budget space shooter and then got addicted until the end of the single player campaign. FreeSpace2 had better combat gameplay/controls, but Freelancer had a much better campaign/story/presentation/universe. too bad nothing better has been done since then. The latest who tried (SOL Exodus) turned out to be crap.

[–]therealsteve 1 point2 points ago

Has it really been 10 years? Jesus christ I'm old.

[–]bcubegames 1 point2 points ago

I don't know if it's a right reddiquette to put this here, but, my brother and I, are developing something similar and will be starting a kickstarter in coming months. We are using unity(we don't have the knowledge to make our own engine).

We have been fans of Freelancer since we first played the game in 2005 (We only found the treasure 2 years after it's release, being from a TWC). I like x-series of games and other newer space shooters/sim, but to me, Freelancer is the epitome of what a space sim should be, with of course a bit newer style of gameplay for newer audience, and an enthralling story line. I really hope someone beats us to releasing a Freelancer clone(if one can use that word). I would play the hell out of that game.

[–]lowrads 1 point2 points ago

And FreeSpace 3.

Volition, Interplay and THQ need to man up, flip a coin, and do something for the good of humanity.

[–]Stafiss 1 point2 points ago

Looks more like Firefly.

[–]pemricht 1 point2 points ago

I can never see this image without thinking of Firefly for some reason.

[–]CndConnection 1 point2 points ago

R/gaming,

The place where everyone gets a fucking chance to display the game they've been waiting for like some fucking loud mouth motherfucker.

[–]JakJakAttacks 1 point2 points ago

I don't run this place but I have an understanding with the people who do.

[–]simoalley 1 point2 points ago

Should I play these games (star and freelancer)?

[–]Krystie 1 point2 points ago

I miss this game. Why did the genre have to die :(

[–]dacookeymonsta 1 point2 points ago

THEY MADE A GAME FOR FIREFLY?!

[–]Alpha1-1 1 point2 points ago

.........my user name

[–]Pinith 6 points7 points ago

Screw Freelancer. Wtb Freespace 3

[–]AMostOriginalUserNam 1 point2 points ago

Why not both?

[–]badmonkey0001 1 point2 points ago

I'd like to point out that Discovery Freelancer is kicking along nicely. If you're into MP and would like to see a great many things about the game improved, give it a try. Pure awesome, IMHO.

  • improved graphics
  • native widescreen
  • new factions
  • many, many new ships (including capital ships)
  • many, many new weapons
  • Faction RP is great
  • So many bugs fixed...
  • You can pilot a Firefly

If you need eye candy, here you go.

[–]Shardax 0 points1 point ago

This game is so fucking amazing. But it was really hard. But the one mission took me quite some time. And so many tries <.<

[–]amnater 0 points1 point ago

This was one of my favorite games, does anyone still play it online? I miss it...

[–]SteveOtts 1 point2 points ago

I actually reinstalled in a couple of days ago strangely enough.

[–]Schrecken 0 points1 point ago

OMG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR FREAKING EVER!!!!!!!

[–]AzraelDomonov 0 points1 point ago

Ahh, I love this game. If they actually made a sequel, I don't think I'd be able to put it down.

[–]Urinalbuckshots 0 points1 point ago

I've seen a few of these threads and no one has mentioned Shenmue III yet...

[–]efeman 0 points1 point ago

T'was my first foray into space as a kid. I can't believe there haven't been any other good free-flight space games since then; at least, I know of none...

Also, Homeworld... :(

[–]AllensArmy 1 point2 points ago

Homeworld 3 really needs to happen.

[–]AlextheGerman 0 points1 point ago

I loved this game..

[–]macromorgan 0 points1 point ago

I made sure to play this one back in the day. Still one of my favorite games. If there is a Sim City 5 coming out, why can't there be a Freelancer 2.

As far as similar games, I have to highly recommend EV Nova (it's top down versus 3d, but similarly addictive). I played the hell out of the original EV on my old Mac growing up. If you have an iDevice give Galaxy on Fire 2 a try, it's very similar to Freelancer, sans the multiplayer though.

[–]simaung 0 points1 point ago

this is best science game loong time a go .i love this..

[–]Tili_us 0 points1 point ago

"Freelancer alpha one dash one, you are clear to board"

[–]elsewhere27 0 points1 point ago

always liked tuning cargo ships into mini battle cruisers. You could load those things up with soooo many guns!

[–]TengenToppa 0 points1 point ago

[–]Ponkers 0 points1 point ago

Rather unrelated, but did anyone ever see a UK ghost hunting show called Most Haunted? They had one of the tracks from the game as incidental music.

[–]Schlack 0 points1 point ago

Damit, now I have to go dig out the cd.

see you in a week

[–]mainlands 0 points1 point ago

The next time you look at that cover you notice the spaceship on the left is actually a whale. Once seen cannot be unseen.

[–]Alililele 0 points1 point ago

:( it'll never happen

[–]Monkeyman42 0 points1 point ago

One of the best games of my childhood.

[–]flamedragoon345 0 points1 point ago

its called eve online, unfortunately

[–]TangoDown13 1 point2 points ago

Unfortunately? Eve is great!

[–]requieminadream 0 points1 point ago

That game was freakin awesome.
