Also:

British DNA £2 coin

British Darwin £2 coin

However we also have the head of the Church of England on the other side of all of these, so it kind of balances out.

BTW has anyone here ever had one of these coins in their change? I always check when get a £2 coin, but no luck yet.

[–]shavedpope 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was working yesterday and my co-worker changed two pounds up in the till because there was a DNA coin in there. He also told me when he worked in a pet shop, someone paid with a £5 coin so he exchanged that and kept it too. We seem to have a collection of weird/rare coins in our till at the end of the day.

[–]GingerScottishDwarf 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just checked all of the money I had lying around. Lots of bridges, dismembered heads and weird circle things, but no Darwins/DNA. :(

EDIT: Also, there's no such thing as a "British" £10 note. Bank of Scotland / Bank of England etc. all print different notes. I think all of the coins are the same, however.

[–]Anon_is_a_Meme 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, the £10 note issued by the Bank of England can be considered the British £10 bank note, because it's the only £10 note that is legal tender throughout Great Britain. The currency issued by the banks of Scotland (the Bank of Scotland, the Royal Bank of Scotland, and the Clydesdale Bank) are technically promissory notes. They are not considered legal tender even in Scotland.

I find it really ironic that the UK is technically a theocracy, and the US technically has complete separation of church and state. Practically though...

It's odd that a nation born out of dissent for dogmatic religious leaders now has such leaders much more than the nation they were dissenting against.

[–]Salomas 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was born out of dissent, but actually because the puritans found the religious leaders weren't dogmatic enough!

[–]kristian444 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not technically a theocracy. The Queen is head of state and head of the church, but the two are separate. It's like someone being the chairman of two different companies; it doesn't mean that one has power over the other.

Ok America, here is my plan. Atheists who want to be politicians, LIE about your beliefs so that you get elected. Continue saying that you believe in God, while moving the country silently into a non-religious future. Within the next 50 years or so, you should have weeded all of the crazies out. Checkmate

[–]Ragnalypse 92 points93 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How do you know atheists aren't already doing this?

[–][deleted] 62 points63 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fingers crossed, hopefully they are.

[–]Ragnalypse 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I think many of the people who are more "behind the scenes" are likely less religious or atheistic. While obviously many Christians are capable despite their indoctrination, I'd like to think a good portion of the people capable of accruing political power are atheists - just as with the sciences.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem really happens to be who gathers public support and how. I don't mind a candidate who happens to be Christian or any other religion or lack there of. A problem occurs when they try to impose their views on others. So, its one thing to say "I don't believe in gay marriage, but we'll vote on it" rather than "Gay marriage is wrong and should never happen, and it won't on my watch".

I think the less-theistic presidents in the United States are as follows:
Thomas Jefferson
James Madison
James Monroe
Martin Van Buren
William Henry Harrison
John Tyler
Zachary Taylor
Abraham Lincoln
Andrew Johnson
Ulysses S. Grant
Rutherford B. Hayes
Chester Arthur

These are just some that I remember and a few that I looked up, so this isn't definitive.

[–]_bromden_ 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You forgot John Quincy Adams, who refused to take the oath of office on a bible, instead using a book of laws, "to preserve the separation of church and state." I always thought that was awesome.

[–]hunkofmonk 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not trying to anger anyone, just genuinely curious - why is it such a big deal that it mentions God on American money? Judging by the number of posts about it, it's a big issue for some people. I mean, on our coins it says 'Elizabeth II D G REG F D', or 'Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen and defender of the faith'. Thing is, British atheists (as far as I know) aren't bothered about this to nearly the same extent that Americans are.

[–]BadJokeHour 51 points52 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Atheist Americans generally aren't bothered by it at all - atheist redditors are. Don't forget the demographic on this subreddit is resentful 21 year olds who hate religion because their parents are religious nuts. In reality most Americans, including atheists, don't care about it. Reddit doesn't represent the opinion of America.

It's probably because it was added onto US bank notes around 1960, which is very recent rather than being a traditional thing. Religion seems to be on the increase in American politics from what I can gather, opposite to every other 1st world govenment. That's why some people want to punch themself in the face when they see stuff like this.

It also says "our home and NATIVE land," even though most of us are of European descent.

We also have a bible belt every bit as crazy as the US south, and until fairly recently required prayer in public schools every morning.

Yeah but if you turn around the Canadian money it's the head of the state religion and hereditary ruler of the commonwealth "by the grace of god".

We have the same science-y related pictures on our Scottish banknotes. Fuck yeah for science.

[–]cdnson 10 points11 points ago

I'm proud to be a Canadian, but I'm afraid that we don't have much of a basis to claim scientific superiority nowadays. Our science minister is an ex-chiropractor who doesn't believe in evolution and the government keeps a tight lid on our scientists lest they mention something embarrassing like how our fish stocks are being rapidly depleted or that the tar sands are a major contributor to global warming.

We also pulled out of the Kyoto treaty due to lack of political will to meet our obligations.

I have a rather large collection of currency from around the world. I like ours in that it is unique, and just because I think it's cool looking. What I hate is our coins. In every other country they put NUMBERS on the coins so people from other countries know what they are worth. We don't do that on any of ours. You can't tell by the size or color or name. WTF is a dime, and why is it the smallest? The dollar coin is the dumbest of them all. Same size and shape of a quarter. I have lost nearly every one I ever got by spending it as a quarter.

i think our 100s are plastic now too. I'm never rich enough to actually have one, but i felt one once, and it felt like plastic.

...i unintentionally made myself out to be sad and pathetic there. nice.

I also want to add that you cannot rip that dollar bill, and if you crush it into a tiny ball, it simply unfolds like nothing happened.

Currency like a boss.

Even as a Canadian, I'm embarrassed by this shit. I mean, I've always known r/atheism loves to trumpet this piddling nonsense, but I never thought it was such a popular opinion. I really wouldn't ever want to meet an active member of this subreddit. You people are pathetic...a disgrace to atheists everywhere.

Possibly because that bill was released about 6 months ago and, along with the benefit of not mentioning god, is made of plastic and is water and tear resistant.. =)

Don't worry. Harper will completely fuck up that sentiment if he gets the chance. Canada is already muzzling scientific inquiry into the tar sands.

How come everyone's money looks like it was designed by somebody on acid? I know they have to make it hard to counterfeit, but it's starting to get insane. 20 dollar bills with a million little twenties on them and Canada with an exploding maple leaf and god knows what else.

Before our country got hijacked by Religion, our motto used to be "Out of many, one" (in latin). I personally think the "In God we trust" and "under God" need to go away - we are not a christian theocracy and our government shouldn't favor one religion over another.

That's great and all, but you've yet to point out that THE CANADIAN ONE SMELLS LIKE MAPLE SYRUP. This isn't some "lol canada" joke, seriously people, our 100$ bill smells faintly like maple. Talk about badass counterfeit measures.

[–]kona_boy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Besides the obvious fear of god they have, their coinage and banknotes are piles of shit. Ugly, poor quality and easy to counterfeit.

More junk from the US.

Flip them both around. One has an atheist, scientist, and philosopher greatly responsible for western liberal democracy. The other has a Prime Minister that ordered the military to massacre protesters.
