Actually, we still use leeches (and maggots).

Not "still". We only started using them again quite recently.

Maggots will ONLY eat necrotic (dead) tissue, so they are excellent for debriding a wound. The maggots are specially reared and are 100% sterile.

Leeches are used to maintain blood flow to a badly damaged or re-attached finger if the veins are not able to return blood from it. Having a leech drink just a small amount of blood maintains oxygen flow to the finger tip while the veinous side recovers.

We use them in Chinese medicine as a blood mover - for trauma like bruises and clots. They are dried and ground up to mix into herbal formulas.

"Still" is still valid

For very limited applications where they've been proven to have an effect. They don't do anything for fevers, which is what people used to use them for.

[–]orangegluon 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The point is that they still have an application. There was an episode of House where maggots were used to clean up huge amounts of dead skin cells. I thought that was pretty cool.

[–]SleepDeprivedPegasus 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And if it is on House, it is legit!

[–]M0b1u5 7 points8 points ago

Yep - the medical side of House is actually pretty accurate.

Of course, even the world's best diagnostician wouldn't encounter 1% of what house does. It's TV after all.

In Louisiana the back country folk use leeches to re-attach body parts (ears, fingers, etc) until a doctor can do it proper.

Not a bad thing to know in a kerfluffle.

The flat Earth model was rejected before Christianity existed, by the Greeks. Eratosthenes also estimated the curvature of the Earth, quite accurately, by examining the movement of shadows.

The Columbus era maps you see were not supposed to suggest that the ocean simply fell over the edge. The round shape was really more of an artistic decision, I think, with the edge representing the end of the known world. Look at an atlas, we do the same thing. Somebody thousands of years from now, examining a map, might think we were morons who believed the world was a flat rectangle.

[–]picado 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably all sea faring people knew that, but the old Jews weren't, so their cosmology had a flat earth.

[–]PartTimeInfidel -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's interesting, where does it come from? Is it supposed to represent a verse from the OT or is it an actual historic drawing?

I saw it's an .edu site, so I spent 4 minutes clicking through the site to figure out some authorship.

Do the following (there are frames so I'll give instructions so you get the experience intended by the site, rather than a link to the frame in question).

Click "God, Reason, and the Evangelicals"

Not related to the topic at hand, I know, but that just blows my mind on so many levels. The resourcefulness, and intelligence one would need to have to find that out using what they had and knew back then is so amazing.

I don't think I could calculate the curvature of the Earth by using modern techniques and technology(yeah, yeah, I could Google search it or look it up in a book, but that's not the point) and the guy managed to do it by using fucking shadows.

[–]theowest 3 points4 points ago

Nonsense. There's plenty of precedent for destroying leaders who don't share your beliefs, even if you are technically part of the same religion.

...So I am religious. But I will do everything in my power to keep this nutjob out of office. Part of the beauty of this nation is to practice or not practice as you like. I believe someone has just as much rights to their beliefs as I have to mine. I don't believe I can tell someone else what to do. I advocate for gay rights, I don't like forcing religion down people's throats and I am a scientist. Biology. Evolution and what not does not threaten my religious beliefs. And if it does, than you must not have much conviction. Santorum... he's a nut job that wants everyone to think the way he does. I want him to sink into a hole and disappear from political life.

I didn't know earth was a giant coin.

[–]Murcalumis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see somebody has pointed out why the leech argument is wrong along with the flat Earth argument.

As far as the law one is concerned, that seems accurate if my memory is right about witches having made pacts with the devil to gain their power?

But the one that hasn't been pointed out that makes zero sense to me is the stork bringing a baby. Before Christianity any religion, women had to know that storks didn't really deliver babies in that manner. As far as I know, that's always been something people tell their children to avoid having the sex talk with them.

But I'm sorta talking out my ass here since I don't follow politics as much as I should and maybe Santorum really does have a plan to have babies delivered via the stork if he's elected. If that is his plan though, he'd get my vote just for the fact that I want to see it done.

I honestly believe the engine put him here to make the status quo seem reasonable. Our current guy is a caretaker president. I really hoped the DMc would pull the plug. But they can't with these loons. Reasonable rnC candidates: paul and McCain. Both vilified. Sigh.

[–]TheGreatLabMonkey 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry, but Ron Paul does not believe in the separation of church and state. He lost his "reasonable" stance as soon as I learned that.

[–]fluffy402 -2 points-1 points ago

This is what pisses me off about a lot of people. When Obama beat McCain, I was disappointed. I had a feeling that McCain could have done better than Obama (which I still have to this day), but I never went all, "OH MY GOD! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE! THE GAYS ARE GOING TO EAT US ALIVE AND THEN ABORT ALL OUR BABIES! THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE ALL OUR MONEY AND GIVE IT TO CRACKHEADS!"

So yeah. If Santorum is elected, fucking deal with it.

[–]Jisaw 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You might not have, but this is a natural reaction that happens during every presidential election. When Obama was elected, several of my Army buddies went out and bought guns "while it was still legal." When Bush was campaigning for his second term the left was afraid that he'd explode the environment and invade more of the Middle East. I was a few years shy of voting age when Clinton got his second term, but the general feeling on the right was that the country would go bankrupt by giving welfare queens the key to the Treasury. It's all alarmist bullshit, and it's expected every four years.

This is tantamount to people against gay marriage saying it will lead to bestiality and pedophilia. Let's not stoop to their level with libel and just dispute it based on the fact it's not science and has no base.

[–]Sasken 0 points1 point ago

It's also very similar to all the panic when Obama was elected that the States was going to become a Socialist country overnight. And in the end, what really changed in the US? Not much.

I think next up is revisionist history, rewriting the textbooks so that America was founded as a Christian nation, the civil war was fought over state's rights, and the hippies were responsible for the moral decline of America.
