Actually, we still use leeches (and maggots).

We get it. We get it. Enough already.
[–]Drunk_Picard 17 points18 points19 points 6 months ago
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago
Shut up, Wesley.
[–]M0b1u5 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
Not "still". We only started using them again quite recently.
Maggots will ONLY eat necrotic (dead) tissue, so they are excellent for debriding a wound. The maggots are specially reared and are 100% sterile.
Leeches are used to maintain blood flow to a badly damaged or re-attached finger if the veins are not able to return blood from it. Having a leech drink just a small amount of blood maintains oxygen flow to the finger tip while the veinous side recovers.
[–]Kamanaopono 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
We use them in Chinese medicine as a blood mover - for trauma like bruises and clots. They are dried and ground up to mix into herbal formulas.
[–]complete_lies_imo -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
"Still" is still valid
[–]Thryck 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago
'Once again' is better.
[–]minno 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago
For very limited applications where they've been proven to have an effect. They don't do anything for fevers, which is what people used to use them for.
[–]orangegluon 5 points6 points7 points 6 months ago
The point is that they still have an application. There was an episode of House where maggots were used to clean up huge amounts of dead skin cells. I thought that was pretty cool.
[–]SleepDeprivedPegasus 5 points6 points7 points 6 months ago
And if it is on House, it is legit!
[–]M0b1u5 7 points8 points9 points 6 months ago
Yep - the medical side of House is actually pretty accurate.
Of course, even the world's best diagnostician wouldn't encounter 1% of what house does. It's TV after all.
[–]orangegluon 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
or at minimum fairly awesome
[–]cultured_banana_slug 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Doc: "This man is excited. His humors must be off. Bleed him a bit."
(later)
Doc: "Now he's lethargic. His humors are still off. Bleed him a bit more."
[–]bambibrutality 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
they were used for MUCH more than fevers.
[–]Rhesusmonkeydave 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
I were gon' say this too! Can I... Leach some karma?
(brace for resounding No!)
[–]cypherdtraitor 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
In Louisiana the back country folk use leeches to re-attach body parts (ears, fingers, etc) until a doctor can do it proper.
Not a bad thing to know in a kerfluffle.
[–]dew22 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Came here to say this
[–]GroundhogExpert -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
Yeah, they can be very effective in various respects.
[–]PartTimeInfidel 14 points15 points16 points 6 months ago
The flat Earth model was rejected before Christianity existed, by the Greeks. Eratosthenes also estimated the curvature of the Earth, quite accurately, by examining the movement of shadows.
The Columbus era maps you see were not supposed to suggest that the ocean simply fell over the edge. The round shape was really more of an artistic decision, I think, with the edge representing the end of the known world. Look at an atlas, we do the same thing. Somebody thousands of years from now, examining a map, might think we were morons who believed the world was a flat rectangle.
[–]picado 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
Probably all sea faring people knew that, but the old Jews weren't, so their cosmology had a flat earth.
[–]PartTimeInfidel -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
That's interesting, where does it come from? Is it supposed to represent a verse from the OT or is it an actual historic drawing?
[–]capn_awesome 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
I saw it's an .edu site, so I spent 4 minutes clicking through the site to figure out some authorship.
Do the following (there are frames so I'll give instructions so you get the experience intended by the site, rather than a link to the frame in question).
http://www.class.uidaho.edu/ngier/
Click "God, Reason, and the Evangelicals"
The picture heads up chapter 13, "The three-story universe"
[–]FreeGiraffeRides 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
Mostly Genesis, but also several other verses throughout the bible.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
Satan took jesus to the mountaintop and showed him all of creation.
[–]YzermanToLidstrom 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
Not related to the topic at hand, I know, but that just blows my mind on so many levels. The resourcefulness, and intelligence one would need to have to find that out using what they had and knew back then is so amazing.
I don't think I could calculate the curvature of the Earth by using modern techniques and technology(yeah, yeah, I could Google search it or look it up in a book, but that's not the point) and the guy managed to do it by using fucking shadows.
[–]theowest 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
But they didn't believe the earth was flat..
[–]FreeGiraffeRides 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
Actually the biblical cosmology is even less accurate than this cartoon. Here is what they really thought it looked like.
[–]danthemancooney 5 points6 points7 points 6 months ago
Planned parenthood under Santorum.
[–]stainz169 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
Fuck that, theres no New Zealand on the map. Vote NO to Santorum
[–]kenneth1221 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
Nonsense. There's plenty of precedent for destroying leaders who don't share your beliefs, even if you are technically part of the same religion.
Just get Jack Chick to publish more of his "Catholics are servants of the devil," tracts.

uses of leeches in modern medicine
[–]CrazyBluePrime 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
There's really no way that he could possibly do that.

...So I am religious. But I will do everything in my power to keep this nutjob out of office. Part of the beauty of this nation is to practice or not practice as you like. I believe someone has just as much rights to their beliefs as I have to mine. I don't believe I can tell someone else what to do. I advocate for gay rights, I don't like forcing religion down people's throats and I am a scientist. Biology. Evolution and what not does not threaten my religious beliefs. And if it does, than you must not have much conviction. Santorum... he's a nut job that wants everyone to think the way he does. I want him to sink into a hole and disappear from political life.
[–]pcarvious 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Someone want to fix this to have a scientist burning at the stake?
[–]karmicbliss 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I think the leeches are too advanced for Santorum. He'd probably just pray it away like he thinks we can pray the gay away.
[–]Dante9934 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I'll do it just to see some old lady burn
[–]STUN_Runner 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I get the feeling that the people who burned her alive dressed her in that outfit, too.
[–]Solkre 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Also, there's no way in hell you'll afford leaches without insurance.
[–]robin1961 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
hmmmmmmmm...Santorum/Palin?.....Santorum/Gingrich? America can't help but regain the "Most Assinine Leadership" title this time round.
(Title recently usurped by the "Harper Government" , formerly known as the "Government of Canada")
[–]RussianWhiteBoii 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Would having a practicing catholic as president be so bad? I don't think Rick's religious viewpoint will cause him to do the things in this cartoon.
[–]dellollipop 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
....Have you read/heard any of his arguments?
[–]major_duckn_cover 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Hmm close to what I was imagining but my brain gave it more of a starship troopers vibe.
[–]Rflkt 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I didn't know earth was a giant coin.
[–]Murcalumis 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I see somebody has pointed out why the leech argument is wrong along with the flat Earth argument.
As far as the law one is concerned, that seems accurate if my memory is right about witches having made pacts with the devil to gain their power?
But the one that hasn't been pointed out that makes zero sense to me is the stork bringing a baby. Before Christianity any religion, women had to know that storks didn't really deliver babies in that manner. As far as I know, that's always been something people tell their children to avoid having the sex talk with them.
But I'm sorta talking out my ass here since I don't follow politics as much as I should and maybe Santorum really does have a plan to have babies delivered via the stork if he's elected. If that is his plan though, he'd get my vote just for the fact that I want to see it done.
[–]idiotconspiracy 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Bullshit... Australia isn't even a real place!
[–]s-mores 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Think on the bright side, at least the storks will never unionize since that'll be a Bad Thing in the current system.
[–]Truzzley 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Well, I know who the flat earth society is voting for..
[–]Psychonik3 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Only in Butt-fuck-bible-land.
[–]Campaigne 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
people voted for this man in the primaries...I just don't know what to think anymore...
[–]OneofthemBrians 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Or, like what happens when any president is elected, nothing changes.
[–]bomberblonde 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Fuck Santorum
[–]LoopyLine 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Thankfully everyone on Reddit will surely vote this year and make sure this douche isn't president. I mean it would be ridiculous if he won because not everyone voted in the country lololol
[–]Marley_Avalos 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Santorum
[–]BrentRS1985 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
If Santorum wins, I'm moving to another country when I graduate next year.
[–]thefirebuilds 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I honestly believe the engine put him here to make the status quo seem reasonable. Our current guy is a caretaker president. I really hoped the DMc would pull the plug. But they can't with these loons. Reasonable rnC candidates: paul and McCain. Both vilified. Sigh.
[–]TheGreatLabMonkey 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I'm sorry, but Ron Paul does not believe in the separation of church and state. He lost his "reasonable" stance as soon as I learned that.
[–]AnticScarab3 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Don't forget the part where everyone in this subreddit is thrown in prison for apostasy.
Well, the Americans in the subreddit anyway. You get what I'm saying.
[–]fluffy402 -2 points-1 points0 points 6 months ago
This is what pisses me off about a lot of people. When Obama beat McCain, I was disappointed. I had a feeling that McCain could have done better than Obama (which I still have to this day), but I never went all, "OH MY GOD! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE! THE GAYS ARE GOING TO EAT US ALIVE AND THEN ABORT ALL OUR BABIES! THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE ALL OUR MONEY AND GIVE IT TO CRACKHEADS!"
So yeah. If Santorum is elected, fucking deal with it.
[–]Jisaw 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago
You might not have, but this is a natural reaction that happens during every presidential election. When Obama was elected, several of my Army buddies went out and bought guns "while it was still legal." When Bush was campaigning for his second term the left was afraid that he'd explode the environment and invade more of the Middle East. I was a few years shy of voting age when Clinton got his second term, but the general feeling on the right was that the country would go bankrupt by giving welfare queens the key to the Treasury. It's all alarmist bullshit, and it's expected every four years.
[–]sebzim4500 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
You did NOT just liken Obama to Santorum.
[–]bgates87 -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
Christopher Hitchens had a little "bit" he would often do that was in a similar vein. Alchemy class after Chemistry class, Astrology after Astronomy, etc.
2 more I would like to add. chemistry; alchemy history; mythology
[–]MeMyselForWho -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
This is tantamount to people against gay marriage saying it will lead to bestiality and pedophilia. Let's not stoop to their level with libel and just dispute it based on the fact it's not science and has no base.
[–]Sasken 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
It's also very similar to all the panic when Obama was elected that the States was going to become a Socialist country overnight. And in the end, what really changed in the US? Not much.
[–]DeltaMuffin -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
leeches are helpful but not AS helpful as modern medicine. it was just the best they had back in the day, so it does apply to the joke
[–]picado -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
I think next up is revisionist history, rewriting the textbooks so that America was founded as a Christian nation, the civil war was fought over state's rights, and the hippies were responsible for the moral decline of America.
[–]Gfy_ADOOM -4 points-3 points-2 points 6 months ago
If Santorum becomes president (however unlikely that is.) I'll move to Canada.
