This is why I love living in Louisiana.

Me too! People here are so nice, too!

I agree. I've traveled all over the U.S. and people are pretentious assholes most other places. Especially out west.

Grew up in Destrehan, LA. We had a few nice plantation homes in that town. Bad juju though. Everyone there is kind of crazy.

I work with 3 people from Destrehan in BR, and they're all pretty normal. :\

Everyplace that has people has an abundance of crazy, if you look in the right places or hit the right buttons.

Grew up in Vacherie! Fun facts: Vacherie was a cattle ranch when formed and Vache Erie means "Laughing Cow". Also back in the 1990's the NYT did an article on the fact that 99% of the people born there never move away. I am the 1%!

Seriously, this eclipses Bobby Jindel's defunding of secondary education, plans to privatize schools and prisons, the general political climate of the most corrupt state in the USA, the 3rd highest wage gap in the nation only behind Washington DC and New York, and over all economically depressed state, poor public infrastructure, poor education systems, poor public health, high sales tax, high insurance rates, high crime in our largest cities, the extreme religious fundamentalism, the extremely hot weather?

But yeah, we got Oak Alley Plantation, Mardi Gras, and crawfish.

[–]Testaclese 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And Cajuns, along with their (well, our) food, music, and festivals!

Also, I've noticed that religious fundamentalism is far more notable above the "Alexandria" line - the southern part is predominantly Catholic, and therefore laid-back.

You either have selective memory, or limited experiences. The pockets of crazy are all over the place, and if you haven't run into it, it's because either you're really lucky, or you agree with their particular brands of crazy.

[–]Testaclese 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

....OR your definition of "crazy" is a whole lot more encompassing than mine is. I believe the appropriate Cajun (well, French) term here is "Laissez-faire."

The reforms are enjoying a plurality of support among locals. That tends to happen when your state consistently ranks at the bottom rungs of everything forever.

There's a show available right now on Netflix streaming called "America's Castles". Each episode talks in depth about 2 or 3 old mansions that are in the US. The first episode is about plantation mansions. This one is one of the plantations featured and they talk extensively about "Oak Alley". Very informative and interesting, especially for ents.

I visited there a few years ago on a road trip. Absolutely stunning scenery. I even bought a seedling to plant at my house. I have since moved. This means I need to re-visit and get one for my current house :)

There's actually another place just like this around the St. Martinville/Catahoula area of Louisiana.

Rumor has it that about a hundred years ago, when the area was still in the middle of the sugar boom, the guy who owned the particular plantation planned one of the most kickass wedding presents of all time for his daughter; in the wee hours of the morning of the wedding (which of course would take place on the plantation grounds), the dude spent a butt-load of money importing silk spiders, then placing them all over the trunks of the tree row. When the sun rose, both rows of oaks (those are live oaks, by the way) had these massive spiderwebs arching from tree trunk to tree trunk, all the way down the line. What's more; the morning dew had carpeted itself along the spiderwebs, so when the sunlight hit the webbings, both rows of oak trees glittered in the light like living walls of spun-silver - and if you hadn't guessed it already, those rows would also serve as the path of the wedding processional, all the way up to the front of the house.

Now THAT is an awesome wedding present!!

I go to Spring Hill College in Mobile and it looks a lot like Oak Alley. One of our streets is called Avenue of the Oaks. It's not quite the same as Oak Alley but it is still beautiful. Apparently the "run forrest run" scene of Forrest Gump was filmed at my school (: or at least thats what I've heard.

I went to Oak Alley all the way from the UK last year and got pretty much the same photo, though yours is clearly better. I love these trees, it's a shame they wouldn't let me climb them!

Very nice to see others from Louisiana! I live about an hour away from New Orleans in a really small town. This is just one of the many reasons I do love being down here. The atmosphere is just lovely.

It's really funny that I see pictures like this on r/pics. When my friend from Maine came to visit she was constantly in awe of all the trees, especially the giant oaks we have here. I see areas like this every day. LSU Avenue in Baton Rouge is a quarter mile of road which has constant shade from the trees lining both sides. My grandmother's house on the Bayou Teche, where everything glows orange as the sun sets. Hell, just looking out over the Atchafalaya Basin and seeing water so grown with moss it looks like you could walk on it. All of these things, like pictures from a book. And they're just commonplace to me. I walk by them every day and pay them no mind.

So strange.

During my senior year of high school, our choir trip was to Louisiana. Oak Alley plantation was one of our stops. We also got to tour the house. It was so awesome to hear the history and see it first hand. I also remember smelling the magnolia tree that's on the property. I would love to go back someday!!
