That was one of the points of the movie. Just because someone has the same interests as you does not mean they are your soul mate. The story was him learning this fact. Many people do not learn this fact until it is much too late.

"Just because some cute girl likes the same bizarro crap you do, doesn’t make her your soul mate."- Kickass girl

Yeah I guess the movies pretty explicit about it.

[–]Clumpy 38 points39 points ago

Oh, I thought you meant a quote from Hit Girl or something. I thought for a moment that Kick-Ass might have had a profound or intelligent line of dialogue that I missed.

[–]greenriver572 7 points8 points ago

It does, it just gets lost in the ridiculousness.

[–]klti 5 points6 points ago

I wish I could send this line to myself ten years ago.

[–]EvanAwesome 2 points3 points ago

Her name is Chloe Mortez.

[–]EvanAwesome 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, she is awesome. Loved her in Hugo and Kickass. I think her name is Kaylie in 30 Rock.

[–]Vixt 2 points3 points ago

Her name was Chloe Moretz.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Her name is Chloe Moretz.

[–]zHellas 2 points3 points ago

Her name is Inigo Montoya. You killed her hamster. Prepare to die!

Indiana Jones: "THAT'S NOT EVEN A PERSON!!!"

[–]ArrMart 4 points5 points ago

OMFG, I would really appreciate it if you went over and explained this to my crazy ex-girlfriend. This movie is her favorite movie, and I highly doubt she gets this, because she watches it whenever she gets lonely and depressed (at least once a week) and says that the movie "kills her" because of her other ex that she was convinced was her soul mate in the exact manner of the plot. Mind you, I only found out the whole "loving her ex" part after we broke up and I was still communicating with her, but your comment blows my mind pretty hard.

I've never seen the movie, so humor me: what does make someone your "soul mate"? (Or at least acceptable for marriage?)

[–]aptrapani 16 points17 points ago

That, and the risks of romanticizing.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

And greeting cards.

[–]PringleGuy 3 points4 points ago

"Roses are red, violets are blue, fuck you whore."

[–]abs01ute 1 point2 points ago

Roses are red, violets are blue, FUCK YOU WHORE.

[–]Mr_Maps15 0 points1 point ago

People should be able to say how they feel.

[–]Skurvy2k 5 points6 points ago

this is kind of a basic psychological reaction though, the infatuation I mean. It's great to be against it or to champion a more cautious approach and all but it's not exactally easy to ignore a few thousand years of hardwired mental processes.

[–]ericfromtx 2 points3 points ago

That's deep.

The movie doesn't answer that question. it's just about a relationship that doesn't work out the way a guy would have liked it to

Put that as spoiler since I've pissed people off for posting less revealing information about even older movies. Can't be too safe on Reddit

[–]barnesandnobles 5 points6 points ago

Upvotes for not spoiling. Also, for a good response

[–]SirVanderhoot 14 points15 points ago

I don't think it's a spoiler. It's the first line of the movie.

"It's actually a pretty big spoiler..."

Posts spoiler.

[–]Absinthe42[!] 0 points1 point ago

I don't really think it's a spoiler, considering one of the opening lines of the movie is, "This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know upfront, this is not a love story." It's right there at the beginning.

[–]dynamitebork 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It doesn't flesh that part out so much as it drives home the idea that there is no such thing as destiny and any love you want in your life is something you have to go out and create.

i learned this in my last relationship. we tried and failed for 6 years and couldn't figure out why, since on paper we were perfect. same humor, same style, same taste in most everything. Then when we finally separated for over a year and I dated other people I saw why... Dating someone just like you isn't at all interesting, it brings nothing new to your life. And it's boring as fuck.

My current partner and I have remarked several times about how we never thought we'd get along as well as we do, and I'm pretty much falling in love. He's almost nothing like me in the superficial ways, but he is in all the fundamental ones.

[–]reDrag0n -3 points-2 points ago

Plus, the second girl he meets is way more hotter.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]kendrahwithanh 9 points10 points ago

I think a lo of 20 somethings who fancy themselves subversive or alternative go through this. You surround yourself with people with similar music, fashion and political tastes, and for a long time that's all that's going on in your life so it's enough.

But those things are temporary, possibly fleeting, and can change over time. Thus they aren't a good thing to build a relationship on. At the core, the dude wanted love - she didn't. Doesn't matter if they like the same bands.

[–]Thinks_Reddit_Is_RPG 4 points5 points ago

At the core, the dude wanted love - she didn't.

I think it was even sadder than this. The dude wanted to make the relationship more serious, but she didn't feel like getting into a more serious relationship with him in particular. To me, the key scene in the entire movie is when he sees her again randomly on the train (I think it was a train) after they broke up and she tells him that she met someone new and that they were getting engaged. I remember he prodded to see why go serious with this new guy and not himself and she basically tells him outright that it just felt right with this new guy to get more serious whereas it never felt that way with him. I think this is a subtle difference because it puts the blame on JGL's character instead of on Zooey's (I only use "blame" for lack of a better word).

[–]TheOneBritishGuy 1 point2 points ago

It's right towards the end when they are in the park. Just before he goes to the last Architect place and meets Autumn.

[–]Planet-man 64 points65 points ago

Yeah, 'cause THAT'S how you'd react if Zooey Deschanel was coming on to you in an elevator.

[–]uccparadise 2 points3 points ago

I'd probably grab her tits.

[–]VeryGoodLookingMan 23 points24 points ago

You misspelled 'stand there awkwardly and finish the elevator ride in silence'.

[–]uccparadise 1 point2 points ago

and a jizz stain on my pants...

[–]electricfistula 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I also like the Smiths... cause they are good. Right? Their music is just so good. That is why I like it. You like it too? Cause its good?

[–]BlinkOh 13 points14 points ago

Probably?!

[–]uccparadise 1 point2 points ago

i'm a shy person, so i'd do it when the door opens.

[–]squot 0 points1 point ago

IT WAS SO BAD. I've read HHG so I knew what was going on.

My best friend hadn't. And now says she's not going to read them, because they make no sense.

[–]HenkieVV 1 point2 points ago

And now says she's not going to read them, because they make no sense.

Did you explain to her that what the movie fails to convey is that like 95% of the reason the books are awesome is exactly because they make absolutely no sense at all?

[–]squot 1 point2 points ago

I mostly just told her that while the series makes no sense, it makes sense in a related fashion, which the movie did not. She honestly thought that all the pits and pieces were pretty funny, but she had no idea what was going on at ALL at any point because it literally seemed like they would pick 4 pages out of the book, mostly recreate it, then pick another 4 pages.

I have NEVER seen a movie with less narrative that still had a narrator.

[–]chrisbooth12 -2 points-1 points ago

What tits

[–]uccparadise 2 points3 points ago

oh, i confused her with katy perry...

[–]Eden-licious 34 points35 points ago

If she wasn't attractive this is exactly the way it would have played out.

[–]kendrahwithanh 7 points8 points ago

yeah but she's cute. cute girls can get away with saying the dumbest shit and people still go gaga over them.

[–]Mindelan 2 points3 points ago

Cute guys too.

that film was perfect

[–]xDeda 2 points3 points ago

This movie grinds a lot of peoples gears, but come on, it has some really good values. The editing was lovely, the acting was pretty good, Joseph is a lovely guy.

Well, I've turned down many relationships, even simple friends, because their tastes in life were too different from mine. This post just made me realize that I am fucked uppppppp.

[–]sweetmomo 1 point2 points ago

"OMG HE KNOWS WHAT BANANAFISH ARE." yeah- you and every hs freshman in the country

[–]prepend 1 point2 points ago

Back when I was a kid in the early 90s very few people liked the smiths. It was rare to find someone else who really understood the smiths.

I would guess that the writer of this film was a teenager in the 80s/90s when it was strange and unique to find someone who loved an amazing and overlooked band such as the smiths.

Of course today, you hear The Smiths in car commercials, alternative radio and super markets. But back then, the Smiths got absolutely no radio play at all.

[–]runningtheblade 1 point2 points ago

As much as I love 500, this cracks me up.

There's a special ring in hell for guys who turn down girls who look even remotely like Zooey while she's hitting on you.

[–]furyasd 21 points22 points ago

Then she says "I don't want anything serious" and you say "Oh yeah, that's cool, take it slow right?" and she goes "sigh" and leaves the ikea bed you were in and some days after breaks up with you and some months after you see her again and she is fucking married.

[–]Bouzin 12 points13 points ago

Are you saying all gay people go to hell?

[–]vooglie 3 points4 points ago

Sign me up for the special hell because Zooey is annoying as fuck.

[–]The_Shiznittt[S] 1 point2 points ago

Oh no, but shes so "adorkable"!... -.-

[–]DownGoesFraser 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It wouldn't have been much of a movie then, would it?

[–]JoePurdy 0 points1 point ago

Eh, I loved this movie, regardless of how true this is.

[–]prince_of_tacoma 0 points1 point ago

However, if someone shares your taste in music, that isn't an awful place to start talking about other things. It shouldn't be the only basis of relationship, but there are worse places to start.

[–]Ohellmotel 0 points1 point ago

Well, maybe like thousands...

[–]herpderpdoo 0 points1 point ago

I read this in Archer's voice

Nope

[–]vynguyen 0 points1 point ago

This film is perfect. It's helps you learning many things in the life. This story why they gets divorced because they gets idea terrible. Everything from begin to the end.

[–]Winstonia -4 points-3 points ago

I finally watched this film yesterday, I thought it was really good. BUT. She was a stone cold bitch. Especially that bit at the end when he holds his hand in the park.

FUCKING bitch.

[–]DSQ 19 points20 points ago*

I thing don't she was a bitch but it was that he wanted somthing from her and the relationship that she just couldn't give him.

Can you really call some one a bitch when they say they don't want anything serious and then don't take the relationship seriously?

He just wasn't the right guy for her, and vice versa.

[–]sisyphus -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It should have ended before it confirmed the standard old romcom tropes about soul mates in the first place. It almost, for a moment, had a novel take, then it ruined the whole thing by turning itself into a conventional conservative tale where people do have soul mates, women just want to get married, everything will work out in the end, etc. etc. etc.

[–]DSQ 4 points5 points ago

[–]aptrapani 2 points3 points ago

I thought it was more of a "this guy never learns" bit. After romanticizing Summer and crashing after his relationship with her wasn't what he made it to be, I found his bitterness showed that he never fully learned, just accepted his terms. His meeting Autumn just kind of confirms that he is on the same path, yet again. Oddly, though, he decides to follow his gut this time around and not make assumptions about her before ever meeting her. So perhaps aside from all that scorn he holds for Summer, he finally learned a little tact.

[–]TheOneBritishGuy 1 point2 points ago

I think he was just taking the chance to show he was moving on from Summer, hence the name Autumn, and he never knows, but this might actually lead somewhere. With Summer he instantly had the idea that he wanted to love her and wanted to be with her, but with Autumn he had to think about it and seize the moment.

I hated this movie so much. The guy was a greeting card writer. Seriously.

[–]Mr_Titicaca 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I need to switch jobs...greeting card writer sounds fucking awesome.

[–]CorneliusTumblecunt 2 points3 points ago

I kind of enjoyed the movie but I hated Summer.

[–]lampsforall 2 points3 points ago

I felt like burning down the theater after the end. "Hi, my name's Autumn"! What a fucking stupid ending

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

So many things bad about it. I feel bad you paid money to see it in a theatre. I saw it on HBO. Nothing but time was lost.

[–]lampsforall 0 points1 point ago

haha I feel bad I paid money for it too. I am so very confused by the unadulterated love people show for this film. There are so many superior movies in this genre

[–]TCKLDPNK -3 points-2 points ago

Ha! I feel stupid. I never realized this.
