Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

This caused Kittinger to lose consciousness, but his life was saved by his main parachute which opened automatically at a height of 3,000 m (10,000 ft). Despite this near-disaster on the first test, Kittinger went ahead with another test only three weeks later.

During the ascent, the pressure seal in Kittinger's right glove failed, and he began to experience severe pain in his right hand from the exposure of his hand to the extreme low pressure. (See Effects of vacuum on humans.) He decided not to inform the ground crew about this, in case they should decide to abort the test.

My testosterone levels hit critical mass just reading about this guy.

I wonder what would have happened had he broken the sound barrier.

Hey scientist! Do the skittles burn up on reentry... or do we groundlings get a treat?

Project Excelsior

Projects named like this rarely live up to their name, this is one of the projects that did.

John Kittinger.

The seal on his left space suit glove failed and his left hand was frozen and unusable. He carried on and did not inform mission control.

They had to modify the lift vehicle to accommodate his gargantuan testicles.

His gargantuan testicles were the lift vehicle.

Came to say it's not just "someone" skydiving from space. It's Colonel Freaking Kittinger! Heard some interviews with the guy and not only is he a badass, but he has some freaking awesome stories.

Just because I am kind of a stickler for the technical definition: this fellow and his red bull-sponcered counterpart are nowhere near space. Which by no means diminishes the engineering accomplishment or their human accomplishment (re: brass balls)!

But the simple fact is these jumps were all made well below the 100km karman line that marks the edge of space.

This is John Kittinger, he now works with redbull for the redbull stratos project, the other edge of space jump picture (http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/qylhb/oh_ya_knowjust_someone_skydiving_from_space/) was a recent test jump they made at 71.000ft, i believe the goal is 120.000ft and to be the first jump that reaches the speed of sound in free fall. Pretty cool project if you ask me: www.redbullstratos.com

The feeling as you're falling, the emptiness of your stomach, the total void of your soul, revolving around the black and blue vortex of empty space and explosively full-of-life great blue ball. The moment your last step kicks the metal beast and ventures into the unknown thinness of air.

No steps to be made, just numbness.

Humanity is now measured in measurable numbness.

It is this that transformed us to Gods.

Is that a Toolbox strapped to his ass??

[–]zombiphylax 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That would be the heavy life-support system. They strap it below the waist so when the parachute deploys, it doesn't crush your spine.

In 1960 we were doing this. I would have hoped by now I could charter a Space Shuttle to do this for fun.

There's been TV shows about this, though I don't have a link. I remember him talking about taking that jump and being terrified because there was zero sensation of falling and he honestly thought he was stuck floating in space. It was only when he turned around and saw his balloon shrinking to the size of a dot that he knew he was falling.

even more impressive, parachutes in the 60s were complete junk that involved the use of rubber bands and hooks (really) to open the pack containing the chute. They didn't have snag free velcro closures and spring loaded pilot chutes like modern parachutes.

He didn't break the sound barrier.

[–]Syberduh 0 points1 point ago

He actually came quite close to exceeding the speed of sound in the upper atmosphere

At ~100,000 feet where he jumped, the atmosphere's density is quite low and sound travels relatively slowly.
