Der große Bruder sieht dich.

Big Brother is watching you.

[–]FoKFill 5 points6 points ago

Storebror ser dig.

[–]Shikami42 6 points7 points ago

Sounds even more evil than german :D

[–]FoKFill 4 points5 points ago

Haha, awesome! I think that's the first time swedish surpassed german in evil-soundingness ^_^

[–]Asterix1806 4 points5 points ago

[In Notch's voice]

"Good. Everything is going according to plan.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!"

[–]davorzdralo 0 points1 point ago

Nah, it just looks like that when it is written. When pronounced, Swedish sounds soft and gentle, and German is still strict and kinda scary :D

[–]dmiller6590[S] 4 points5 points ago

Er sieht mich, aber ich sehe ihn, ohne ihn wissen zu lassen ;)

[–]DFractalH 1 point2 points ago

I came here to post this.

[–]Tr2v 17 points18 points ago

Yeah. Hence our frustration.

[–]religionIsCancer 4 points5 points ago

I fuss about it because the squeaky wheel gets the grease and people like that are the loudest, whiniest, dumb motherfuckers around in politics.

[–]AlexVocat 2 points3 points ago

I'm not too fussed about this though. It works to separate those who have been force fed religion and have their doubts from those who are really that religious and close-minded. My problem with religion is when it is given undeserved respect and when indoctrination comes into play. But if people want to believe such backward thinking bullshit then whatever. That sign does me no harm, I can simply laugh at it. I don't care about that sign, I care about the real harm people can do under the excuse of religion.

[–]billiarddaddy 14 points15 points ago

Unfortunately, yes. I use to be one of them.

[–]Scotty_Smallz 1 point2 points ago

Happy cake day

[–]billiarddaddy 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit. I had no idea. Thanks!

[–]king_of_the_universe 0 points1 point ago

Then Satan deceived you. Got it. ;)

[–]billiarddaddy 1 point2 points ago

He use to.

[–]king_of_the_universe 0 points1 point ago

I can't believe people didn't get my obvious and atheist-friendly reference to the text on the submitted picture.

[–]billiarddaddy 1 point2 points ago

Perhaps your error was applying belief to it.

[–]king_of_the_universe 2 points3 points ago

That's a pun, right? Religion. Belief. I am obviously not an atheist, so I must be downvoted.

[–]billiarddaddy 0 points1 point ago

So to clarify, you're commenting in /atheism as a believer and victimizing yourself about comment karma?

S-seriously?

[–]king_of_the_universe 1 point2 points ago

My sarcasm was lost on you. My opinion is that you accelerated yourself into the wrong direction via writing your previous comment, and now you're stuck there, blind for the subtleties of my words, because you don't want to move back, because it would hurt your ego.

[–]billiarddaddy 0 points1 point ago

You should really work on your troll.

[–]king_of_the_universe 1 point2 points ago

Your knee-jerk, however, is polished. Respect.

[–]Lcar210 14 points15 points ago

I refuse to believe that this isn't photoshopped. Are people really that ignorant?

[–]VisionStadium 3 points4 points ago

This picture may be photoshopped, but I've seen at least one church with this sign in reality. Welcome to the Bible Belt.

[–]TheIcelander 2 points3 points ago

I saw a United Methodist church - not the most fundie of congregations - in downtown Lancaster, PA - not the most fundie of towns - with this sign:

Pity the poor atheist for he is grateful and has no one to thank.

So it's not just the fundies who think we're awful.

[–]smellslikegelfling 1 point2 points ago

I recently saw a church sign down the road from me that said "GOD IS NOW HERE", with the words very close together. I'm not sure if they meant for it to be confusing to make people think, or if it was vandalism. IT actually looked like "GODISNOWHERE", but it was taken down the next day.

[–]antisyzygy 0 points1 point ago

We need pictures.

[–]antisyzygy 1 point2 points ago

Assembly of God is everywhere, worldwide, its quite scary to me. These are the individuals that made this alleged sign. I know they are quite common up north in Montana, Idaho, and here in Colorado. I'm from Montana and there was one in each town just about. I spent three years in Houston for graduate school and there are more than I care to count on a Google map I just looked up. There are 12 Assembly of God Churches within 5 miles of my zip-code here in Denver. Pervasive ignorance.

[–]fatfook 2 points3 points ago

I've seen many things like this but maybe they're all photoshopped.

*cue Conspiracy Keanu meme.

[–]Hypersapien 0 points1 point ago

Relevant XKCD

All of you already know which comic it is without even clicking, don't you?

[–]RichardCupidIV 1 point2 points ago

Why waste your time Photoshopping, when there's this?

[–]RichardCupidIV 0 points1 point ago

Incidentally, it's not one of these signs, so might actually be legit.

[–]coratrash 0 points1 point ago

Not photoshopped.

This picture is taken in my good old hometown of Monticello, Minnesota. Right off of highway 25. Trust me, everyone here is confused by it too. And this photo is over a year old, the sign was up for a few months. They always have really out there signs up, to attract attention. But yeah, as I said...this is from last summer.

[–]grimgrinning 7 points8 points ago

My now mother-in-law called me the servant of Satan when we first met. I guess it could have been worse!

[–]natholomew 6 points7 points ago

Satan gave Adam & Eve the forbidden fruit of knowledge...

[–]First_thing 3 points4 points ago

My problem with that is, god is supposed to know everything that has and will happen, how did he not know the snake (which he made) would tempt them into knowledge?

[–]antisyzygy 1 point2 points ago*

I think the point is that God allows people free will, however he makes a bunch of bullshit rules we have to satisfy to appease him. The primary one is ignorance, "Hey! If you want to pursue knowledge then you are doomed to a world of suffering and risk eternal hellfire unless you obey every arbitrary rule I set up for you!". This simply doesn't make sense when people talk about how one day they will be with God in heaven and have some role there, why would you want a bunch of people who can't think for themselves helping you do things unless you are a tyrant? Or maybe you just want them to worship you non-stop which essentially is narcissism and megalomania, and frankly serves no real purpose other than stroking God's ego. The Christian God, and most other Gods for that matter, are fucking jerks. I'd rather be riding around with Thor on his goat drawn cart smiting Giants, or battling in Valhalla preparing for Ragnarok. At least then I would get to hack people to pieces and share meat and mead with my resurrected battle partners every evening feasting a continually resurrecting Boar. I.e. there is a purpose and some tangible benefits other than being a slave that has to suck God's wiener every day to make him happy.

Thankfully I am pretty sure none of the Gods exist.

[–]First_thing 0 points1 point ago

"Here's some free will, but if you don't use it to worship me, I'll make you suffer for all of eternity." Seems like such a swell guy, doesn't he? Neverending fights with giants and super feasts afterwards, I do prefer that to floating around on clouds playing the harp or burning in some fiery river for all of eternity. At least the Norse mythology allows you to do stuff after you die.

[–]antisyzygy 0 points1 point ago

I've always been partial to Norse mythology. Its a rich one.

[–]thisismyivorytower 0 points1 point ago

Praise Loki!

[–]firex726 0 points1 point ago

I believe this is where the freewill aspect comes in. God knew they would be tempted and allowed it to happen but it was up to them to not fall for that temptation. Though speaking a non-psychotic human, if i knew something bad was going to happen to someone i loved i would do everything i could to prevent it. Not let it happen and see how they react.

[–]First_thing 1 point2 points ago

The bible claims he even punished them for using their free will. If he knew what would happen in advance, why'd he get upset with what he knew was coming?

[–]firex726 1 point2 points ago

Yea. I left it as is, i don't really have a logical argument for this bit. Guess id have to be a christian to understand. Lol

[–]First_thing 1 point2 points ago

Not just a christian, a christian BELIEVER. I have plenty of normal christian friends who just think there's a higher power, and they understand the bible was written by opium smoking lunatics.

[–]Mikeonourroof 6 points7 points ago

And this right here is why I hate christianity.

I knew a woman once, whose brother was a catholic bishop somewhere. We got into a brief conversation about religion, and my lack thereof. She didn't pass judgement or anything like that, just offered me some advice her brother had given her. You can't think about faith too much, she told me, or you'll loose it. I couldn't disagree with that!

[–]smellslikegelfling 2 points3 points ago

Ha. I once had a friend's mom (who is a YEC) tell me that in order to understand that the Bible is true you have to believe it first. She couldn't understand why that made no sense.

[–]antisyzygy 1 point2 points ago

You only have to believe that gravity is only little dwarves wearing velcro boots pulling at your legs to be able kick them off and fly my friend.

[–]DemPants 4 points5 points ago

Christians say the darnest things :P

[–]CrabStance 5 points6 points ago

"An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded."

[–]king_of_the_universe 1 point2 points ago

Yea. Someone has to move the fuck in at some point, which is hardly possible if those gates are locked shut!

[–]atphosphate 1 point2 points ago

This is a warhammer 40k quote.

[–]prophaniti 0 points1 point ago

Came here to post this. Have an upvote instead!

[–]The_Underminer 0 points1 point ago

I came here to see this, And here's another one:

"A small mind is easily filled with faith."

[–]TheShadowCat 4 points5 points ago

Should read:

A free tinker is Santa's slave.

[–]WoollyMittens 3 points4 points ago

I only accept church signs if photos are taken from at least two angles.

[–]king_of_the_universe 2 points3 points ago

I thought of that a while ago and realized that there will soon be sign generators which satisfy that need.

[–]Alypius 2 points3 points ago

Really?!?! Please tell me what to think!!

[–]xenobarf 2 points3 points ago

Does this make believers Gods slaves?

[–]proto_ziggy 1 point2 points ago

They would be religions slaves, or rather slaves to their dogmatic beliefs. Same thing I guess.

[–]thezerofire 0 points1 point ago

Christianity pretty much says as much. I don't remember exactly where it is, but there's definitely something along the lines of "a slave can't serve two masters"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Well Paul said that they were slave to God

[–]kj01a 2 points3 points ago

Actually this might be true...

[–]tictoc44 2 points3 points ago

Do people honestly believe this sign actually exists?

[–]Feinberg 1 point2 points ago

Actually, it's AoG, so it might.

[–]coratrash 0 points1 point ago

This sign does exist. It was up for almost 5 months. This picture is from my hometown.

[–]awesomebbq 2 points3 points ago

Free thinker. Is a slave. FREE. SLAVE.

[–]doneddat 2 points3 points ago

slave to the freedom.. obviously!

[–]Digipy 2 points3 points ago

Do they realise that they are insulting themselves?

[–]Applebeignet 2 points3 points ago

I love the obvious oxymoron.

[–]Shikami42 1 point2 points ago

I have been a free thinker for 20 years and i can confirm this.

[–]_EX 1 point2 points ago

Those free slaves are a real problem around these parts.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

You know, I've always wanted to visit America and was even considering moving there for a while. But after browsing reddit for quite some time now, I take it back. I'd still visit for sure, but the place just seems mad.

[–]antisyzygy 0 points1 point ago*

I'm an atheist and have lived here my whole life. I haven't run into many problems. Politics here is simply ignorant universally, but the landscape is quite pretty up here in the Rockies and you can go places where people will leave you alone. You can be an atheist and say so without much trouble, but every once in awhile it can cause someone to be a jerk. My work and group of friends are composed of a majority atheists so its not really a problem for me.

My main point here is, its not as bad as you think, but you always hear stories. When I lived in the south it was the worst, even having doctors say they will pray for me or my wife without offering medical advice, or working with people that simply can't handle rational discussion. I regret not exploring more of the south as it has its own beauty if you ignore the religion.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Okay yeah, I actually realise now that what I said is pretty damn prejudice based on just some things I have read. I guess it's just alien to me, because in Britain, or at least the areas that I have lived in Britain, no one really shoves their religion down your throat in anyway (apart from a few mad ones in Brixton with their leaflets and signs). I would still love to visit though, to experience what is clearly a BEAUTIFUL country and also to experience a place that is so different from here despite speaking the same language. seem's weird but I've only ever visited countries that are so socially/culturally/ language different from me. Only in Europe anyway.

[–]thebootlegsaint 1 point2 points ago

We wouldn't want people thinking for themselves now would we?

[–]fatfook 1 point2 points ago

All part of the overall plan to keep Christians stupid.

If you find yourself having a free, critical, rational thought, it's shit like this that will make you think twice and give up that beautiful thought for fear of the eternal fire.

It's been working on these people for centuries. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

[–]delvolta 1 point2 points ago

People that go to that church do. If you live near there, may the force be with you.

[–]ShockedSystem 1 point2 points ago

An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded.

GLORY TO THE IMPERIUM OF MAN.

[–]9200DaystoFreedom 1 point2 points ago

Yes, coming from a former fundie, this is what we were taught

[–]TheIcelander 1 point2 points ago

False: Slaves work for free. Being a free thinker has many benefits.

[–]thoughtspasm 1 point2 points ago

Even if this made any sense, I'd sooner be Satan's slave with free thought than God's mental prison bitch.

[–]antisyzygy 0 points1 point ago

The parties in hell will be awesome, I also suspect one would spend more time doing science projects just to observe the aftermath. My friend and I wrote a song called "Excavating the Tenth Circle" about digging a whole new layer of hell for this purpose. Hell doesn't exist, but we can dream.

[–]kinjala 1 point2 points ago

I'd rather have giant big orgies with the devil than living in someone's heaven though....

[–]usernameXXXX 1 point2 points ago

So sad.

[–]thescandall 1 point2 points ago

As a former member of the assemblies of god...yes, yes they do believe this blatant bull shit.

[–]naptown92 1 point2 points ago

In my own experience as a Christian, I've never come across anyone who thinks like this. Personally I think this is the most important function of Church--for people to share their varying opinions in order to come to a better understanding of Christianity.

I suppose it goes to show that extremists always stand out, and that there are always people who will believe an idea, no matter how absurd. (And no, the irony of that last part is not lost on me.)

[–]AntonJokinen 1 point2 points ago

Atheists are slaves to no one. That's the beauty of it.

[–]ninjaDOLEMITE 1 point2 points ago

It was a really confusing childhood.

[–]Cptnwalrus 1 point2 points ago

It's literatly saying "Let us control you or else you're going to go to hell" ಠ_ಠ

[–]kingseed 1 point2 points ago

At least they got the apostrophe right. Must be legitimate.

[–]samurai712 1 point2 points ago

Well on the bright side, the logo beneath their name kinda looks like "FAG"

[–]bang_Noir 0 points1 point ago

I am so embarrassed I ever called myself a christian.

[–]MadLintElf 0 points1 point ago

Unfortunately there are so many blatantly ignorant people out there, so yea they believe it.

The solution is education, and enlightenment.

[–]ExitMusic_ 0 points1 point ago

you mean do people actually believe what the sign says? Or do people actually believe that most of these church sign photos are real?

[–]randrews 0 points1 point ago

Well, speaking for myself, as a former Christian, sort of.

It's a lot of nasty social pressure. In the back of your mind you think "no, that doesn't make any sense" but you're afraid to say anything because everyone else obviously believes it (or at least says to), including your parents / family, who have the power (and willingness) to make your life hell if they think you don't.

In reality most of those people probably think the same way you do, that it's blatant bullshit, but they either don't trust their minds or they're afraid to say anything. Get them out of that situation and they get over the brainwashing. Eventually.

[–]upfromthedeeps 0 points1 point ago

Some do. Some don't. Not everybody checks their brain in the narthex.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It's pretty simple: People believe that we're corrupted by sin, the world is a confusing place, our minds are dull and limited, and the only way to know truth is through God. Striking out on our own leaves us without a compass, and therefore we're open and vulnerable to all of Satan's tricks and lies.

It's really not that complicated. I believed it myself when I was younger, and the realization that there were good honest people in other denominations (with very different beliefs) who earnestly sought the truth with the guidance of the Holy Spirit was the first big blow to my faith for this very reason.

I had never realized that faith is an unreliable way to acquire knowledge until I met and befriended other people who used the same method to arrive at different beliefs.

[–]Bodardos 0 points1 point ago

"An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded."

[–]Lemur_Lord 0 points1 point ago

People always harp on and on about how the crazy Christians are in the minority of their religion. However, you go to the bible belt and they are all the same. Crazier than fuck and incapable of a rational thought.

/lived in NC all my life.

[–]mercymercyplease 0 points1 point ago

freed think is dumb, people that do not LISTEN do not HAER!!!!1

[–]QuestionC 0 points1 point ago

There are almost ALWAYS faked.

Unless you can actually confirm this, you are probably propagating ignorance.

[–]CosmicBard 0 points1 point ago

In order to concoct the idea of religion, the first guy to do it would have had to be a free-thinker.

Sometimes I think the entire idea behind religion is to be as contradictory as possible.

[–]Thantos_13 0 points1 point ago

yea i used to till about a week ago

[–]kira87 0 points1 point ago

Hail satan my dark lord and master.

[–]coratrash 0 points1 point ago

I posted in the other thread with the same photo, but this isn't shopped at all.

This picture is taken in my hometown of Monticello, Minnesota. Right off of highway 25. Trust me, everyone here is confused by it too. And this photo is over a year old, the sign was up for a few months. They always have really out there signs up, to attract attention. But yeah, as I said...this is from last summer.

[–]armancain -1 points0 points ago

looks photoshopped to me

[–]sirtoasty624 -1 points0 points ago

Nah I don't really believe that's a real sign

[–]so_fn_wack -1 points0 points ago

I, of my accord, think that this is true. Oh squat, does that make me what I think it does? Help!!
