It's not really the worst mistakes to make. English is a weird language - if you haven't heard a word spoken, it's understandable to not be sure of the pronunciation

[–]MsSarah 50 points51 points ago

Expecially when you grow up reading young so you pronounce a bunch of words incorrectly and your friends make fun of you.

[–]IFUCKINGLOVEMETH 18 points19 points ago

How do your friends know the correct pronunciation?

[–]dsaforthewin 56 points57 points ago

They don't do meth

[–]mellamoAlec 18 points19 points ago

Yes, one of the common effects of doing meth is losing your ability to pronounce words. Its tragic.

[–]Axolotile 6 points7 points ago

Hey! Math users can speech just fine!

[–]problemheresir6 5 points6 points ago

I thank math users are fine

[–]argv_minus_one 4 points5 points ago

Not even once?

[–]MsSarah 1 point2 points ago

They study the correct pronunciation of words so they can chastise me.

[–]ZeekySantos 1 point2 points ago

I hate how it's "Pronounce", but not "Pronounciation". Stupid "Pronunciation" shit.

[–]Bugloaf 1 point2 points ago

Upvote for "Expecially", intentional or not. I love that word now.

[–]MsSarah 1 point2 points ago

Intentional. I pronounce it expecially.

[–]sidewalkchalked 8 points9 points ago

I've heard it said "meems" but I say "mems" because I first learned the word in french, meaning "same" (right?) because I always figured a meme was the same as something else.

[–]GoddamnSometimesY 5 points6 points ago

It's even more confusing when it's not in English. I live close to Mexico and man people here pronounce it meh-mess

[–]I_am_Random 10 points11 points ago

I've heard about these "man people" before.

[–]gerhardmuller 2 points3 points ago

I wonder what his reaction is when his friends are out slamin' beers and bangin' chicks and he is still yelling at people about how they pronounce new internet words.

[–]desertcombat06 2 points3 points ago

OP pronounced it that way originally and now just wants to feel like the cool guy in the group.

Edit: Like myself. ಠ_ಠ

[–]holykami 2 points3 points ago

After knowing about MIME types helped me pronounce this correctly. However, I encourage my more ignorant friends to pronounce MEME like "may-may" ... It amuses me. (They'll find out eventually)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It really shouldn't be that confusing. me-me is how pronouncing meme wrong would be spelled. meme works fine with english, e at the end means the middle e gets pronounced as the letter sounds.

[–]greenvelvetcake 493 points494 points ago

Whatever it takes to make you feel superior.

[–]VentusInsulae 56 points57 points ago

You managed to convey with words what I could not with feelings.

[–]mrsticknote -4 points-3 points ago

and thus you have done the same for me.

[–]fawker 4 points5 points ago

I think both pronunciations sound pretty stupid.

[–]c3llist9 11 points12 points ago

Wait... isn't that what reddit's all about?

[–]Wargall 33 points34 points ago

Which is funny because most of Reddit is lower-class, apartment-dwelling pseudo intellectuals.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

Hey guys, upvote him! He's generalizing us!

[–]Kowzz 18 points19 points ago

Letting improper usage of the English language slide is a contributing factor to the problem.

[–]ClearSilence 13 points14 points ago

Agreed. More people need to learn how to properly pronounce words.

[–]kyzf42 6 points7 points ago

Exactly. OP should direct his friends to this instructive guide.

[–]Schwenckenator 4 points5 points ago

Clicked link. Was not disappointed.

[–]kyzf42 4 points5 points ago

I know, jeeze. I hate it when people get all uptite about the little things about languadge about the way to speak it. Its not like its importent if your using it rite or wrong, is it?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

It's not the same thing. Words may be pronounced differently based on accent; but they're always written the same way.

[–]kShade 1 point2 points ago

*twitch

[–]MelisSassenach 60 points61 points ago

How did you survive? AMA, please!

[–]elnrith 20 points21 points ago

you could just correct them

[–]iihatephones 31 points32 points ago

Too hard; better kill myself.

[–]CyricTheMad 3 points4 points ago

I do that to my friend, but he insists i'm wrong. He also pronounces nuclear as nukular.

[–]Ogow 23 points24 points ago

Does he also pronounce potato like potato instead of potato?

[–]hurdyburdyborkbork 1 point2 points ago

or either like either instead of either?

[–]De_Angelo 1 point2 points ago

[–]StumblyMcStagger 2 points3 points ago

No, it's much better for the rest of us if people who think they are that much cooler than the rest of humanity kill themselves.

[–]DarkStar5758 40 points41 points ago

Mimeme comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like gene. I hope my classiest friends will forgive me if I abbreviate mimeme to meme...It should be pronounced to rhyme with cream

-Richard Dawkins, The Selfish Gene

[–]crunchyeyeball 4 points5 points ago

I hope my classiest friends will forgive me...

I think it's meant to be "classicist" (i.e. someone versed in the classics), rather than "classiest" (i.e. most classy).

[–]feckineejit 67 points68 points ago

IT crowd reference! Woo! Wooooo!

[–]SirRosie 30 points31 points ago

FATHERRRRR!

[–]watermanjack 16 points17 points ago

SPEAK PRRRRRRRIEST!

[–]segFault11235 10 points11 points ago

I used to be able to do a perfect Douglass voice.

Jen, we can't have you talking about sexy sex in the work place!

[–]kdawg412 5 points6 points ago

The glass ceiling is now a glass floor, and all the women are standing up there... and all us men are just... looking.... up at them....

Also, 'Computer Man!'

[–]christag 1 point2 points ago

Fix my pants!

[–]swabfalling 5 points6 points ago

God damn these electric sex pants!!

[–]SonOfDadOfSam 1 point2 points ago

My girlfriend always cracks up when I say "God damn these electric sex pants!"

[–]rcazzy 7 points8 points ago

The sound of that shout is so vivid in my head....and I love it.

[–]cdizl 2 points3 points ago

There are 12 exits at Sea Parks! TWELVE!!

[–]DangerMouseToby 1 point2 points ago

Team Team Team Team Team Team

[–]carsontl 1 point2 points ago

I just love saying the word team. You think this is a picture of my family? No, it's the A Team.

[–]digiorknow 16 points17 points ago

I don't talk about internet things in real life.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

I will just leave the room if somebody says "Troll-face", "Me gusta", or references any meme or rage face in real life. Or if they say "Double-u tee eff".

[–]fawker 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, something tells me OP is an awkward dude to be around in real life.

[–]TheCodexx 2 points3 points ago

You realize that "memes" was a term coined by Richard Dawkins to describe the transfer and propagation of ideas in a "survival of the fittest" fashion, yes? There are valid uses outside of "internet memes".

[–]thatpeterguy 10 points11 points ago

Reddit: where people kill themselves over mispronunciations.

[–]omcetus 17 points18 points ago

[–]cats_are_people_too 16 points17 points ago

In all honesty, meme is one of the stupidest words I've ever heard.

[–]Measlymonkey 2 points3 points ago

You probably don't hear very many words while locked in your mother's basement.

[–]314413 19 points20 points ago

[–]osin144 5 points6 points ago

I've been pronouncing it méme in my head this whole time. I like that better.

[–]Nodonn226 14 points15 points ago

Yes. But some people pronounce it "me-me" which is odd but some people get their panties in a wad.

[–]dudeedud4 6 points7 points ago

I pronounce it "meh-may" becuse the word "meem" just sounds harsh to me.

[–]b0w3n 1 point2 points ago

Took a while to find you, but I did.

Glad I'm not the only one who pronounces it this way. Just following standard English the most acceptable pronunciations are "me-me" and "mehmay" (similar to memory). This has more to do with the Ms than the Es as the consistent has more influence on the sound than the vowel. Which is why pepepe isn't "peepee."

[–][deleted] ago*

[deleted]

[–]your_penis 5 points6 points ago

THEME. It is pronounced like theme is. Jesus Christ.

[–]joegekko 1 point2 points ago

Even if you ARE a native English speaker, the obvious pronunciation is 'mee-mee' because that's the way it looks like it should be pronounced. Everyone I know who pronounces it 'meem' was told by someone from the internet to pronounce it that way.

Everyone I know who pronounces it 'mee-mee' firsst saw the word in 'Snow Crash'.

[–]iDolly 30 points31 points ago

Guilty, I've been saying me-me all this time. TIL.

[–]xela702 8 points9 points ago

Same here

[–]dopebob 3 points4 points ago

I learnt how it's supposed to be said recently but I still pronounce it me-me, I think it sounds better and it's not like people I talk to know the proper pronunciation anyway.

[–]ginning 19 points20 points ago

It's from The IT crowd - for those that will inevitably ask. I think possibly from the end of S1.

[–]AcronymEjr 4 points5 points ago

[–]SKZSKZ2 2 points3 points ago

And for those who think it's a funny show, if you haven't already, you should check out Chris Morris in The Day Today.

[–]savvetheworld 2 points3 points ago

My roommate pronounces it may-may. I die a little inside every time

[–]FordSVT1 6 points7 points ago

Understandable.

Not understandable? People who think that "memes" didn't exist before the Internet.

[–]Deddan 7 points8 points ago

[–]kyzf42 2 points3 points ago*

Being carved on the WWII Memorial is nice, but Kilroy was here was even scrawled in the dust on the moon.

Cracked has a brief list of seven memes that went viral before the Internet. My favorite is FRODO LIVES!, but this one is the most interesting:

SATOR
AREPO
TENET
OPERA
ROTAS

,,,

edit: Even more pre-internet memes.

[–]Deddan 1 point2 points ago

Ah the sator square :D nice.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

Even less understandable? People who think that "memes" are pictures with big captions on them.

[–]cronos844 2 points3 points ago

where is this from

[–]Deddan 2 points3 points ago

IT Crowd.

[–]bayxsonic 2 points3 points ago

Source: video

From the British sitcom The IT Crowd

[–]Red_blueberry 2 points3 points ago

Why didn't the originator of the word just spell it "meems"? Man, I'm pissed. Get him/her on the phone right now!

[–]preske 2 points3 points ago

If you never have heard a word before, you can't always determine the pronunciation.

[–]Enursha 3 points4 points ago

Like this?

[–]karabagadonuts 3 points4 points ago

tomato tomato potato potato meme meme me me meme adsfadja eauid s.

all that matters is if you get your point across.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

haha I get it... you are better than someone else because you knew something before them. you are more or less everyone on reddit.

[–]let_them_burn 1 point2 points ago

I don't ever hear people call it "me-me", but I do hear a lot of people pronounce it "mem" (rhyming with "chem" as in chemistry).

[–]SatansUSBstick 1 point2 points ago

Me-me means tit in Turkish

[–]n00bikscube1122 1 point2 points ago

What I did:

Friend: Look at this Me-me.

Me: It's meme.

Friend: k.

[–]PannaLogic 1 point2 points ago

At least they dont say may-may

[–]Paultimate79 1 point2 points ago

Meem.

[–]carbonbasedlf 1 point2 points ago

Meanwhile a bunch of redditors are sitting at their computer laughing hesitantly, "Yea what a stupid fuck, like come on who pronounces it me-me? ha..ha.." Today little Johnny reddit and Timmy reddit felt like assholes for not pronouncing meme right.

[–]teaspoon83 1 point2 points ago

Me-mes is a spanish slang/baby talk for "sleep."

Time to go memes!

[–]keineliebe 1 point2 points ago

New favorite gif. Thank you.

[–]dawnday9622 1 point2 points ago

You killed yourself?

[–]madisongrace 1 point2 points ago

Oh god.. I've been pronouncing it "me-me's" for the longest time.. How is it pronounced? I've always wondered if I was pronouncing it wrong, but have never seen anything about it's pronunciation until now, so I assumed I was pronouncing it fine.

[–]Kevat 1 point2 points ago

Did you try turning it on and off again?

[–]gra_la 1 point2 points ago

I dont think ive ever said the word aloud to a person, but ive always pronounced them as me mes to myself for years, even though i know otherwise.

[–]picado 1 point2 points ago

Maybe the "me-me" pronunciation will catch on.

[–]izzismitty 1 point2 points ago

God damn it that pisses me off so much. And when I correct them (gently), they INSIST that the correct pronunciation is me-me. Fuck it.

[–]jamesuyt 1 point2 points ago

[–]CutiemarkCrusade 1 point2 points ago

Why should YOU have to pay for someone else's idiocy?

[–]NoFuckIsGiven 1 point2 points ago

I confirm that zero fucks were given.

[–]DarkReaver1337 1 point2 points ago

All I got to say is eat my asshole, I have been calling them me-ma since the fucking cockmongler hit the scene and will not break this 8+ year habit.

[–]DarkReaver1337 1 point2 points ago

All I can say is eat my asshole raw. I have been calling them me-mes since the cockmongler hit he scene and I will not break this close to a decade habit.

[–]notjawn 1 point2 points ago

I call it "me-me" because in its modern connotation its meant to represent the old webcam videos like numa numa guy where its people just doing ridiculous things for attention like saying "Me! Me!" "meem" is just stupid. Another reason god exists Dawkins!

[–]DavidTheBruce 1 point2 points ago

HAH, Burn!!! Theists 1 Dawkins 0

[–]masonbb 1 point2 points ago

I pronounce it "terlet" and "li-berry"

[–]Sovrage 1 point2 points ago

0.o All my friends always pronounced it as "meh-meh"

... now I know! Thank you , Reddit!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

[–]ilikebooks123 1 point2 points ago

HAHAHA. My favourite line of all the IT Crowd episodes is in this one.

Mr. Renholm: "I hope it doesn't sound arrogant when I say, that I am...THE GREATEST MAN, IN THE WORLD!"

[–]Ronex6 1 point2 points ago

...or May-Mays...

[–]Tri_Sara_Tops 1 point2 points ago

A girl on my Facebook calls them "mimes."

[–]thegooddocgonzo 1 point2 points ago

my boss pronounced it "may-may" the other day which prompted us to look up the official pronunciation

[–]zuluthrone 1 point2 points ago

it's analogous to a gene for a cognitive thought, with memetics as their study. I'd say "meem" is the appropriate pronunciation.

[–]deeeznutzz 1 point2 points ago

thats how i pronounce it still...cuz i give 0 fucks what you would think if i said me-mes

[–]Darkling5499 1 point2 points ago

it's pronounced "mehm", not MEAM.

[–]ifiwasntintherapgame 1 point2 points ago

No it's not.

[–]Anti-Giga-Redditor 2 points3 points ago

Big fucking deal, that's what it looks like. You could have corrected them and they would have known.

[–]dayus9 1 point2 points ago

I've never said the word out loud or even typed it. It's a stupid word.

[–]uDash 1 point2 points ago

I've said me-mes from the beginning. I like it.

[–]clowncrusher 7 points8 points ago

It's got to the point where I purposely pronounce it me me to troll people like you who make such a big deal out of it.

[–]All_Tan_Everything 12 points13 points ago

wow what a badass

[–]cold_and_calculating 1 point2 points ago

I prefer saying "me-me" to "meem." It's cuter.

[–]Yggdrazzil 2 points3 points ago

Perhaps you should have gone for "warm_and_fuzzy" instead of "cold_and_calculating"...

Just saying.

[–]Fight4Light 1 point2 points ago

So just cause its cuter we can change things now

[–]cold_and_calculating 1 point2 points ago

ya

[–]Pinslate 1 point2 points ago

I called my grandmother Meme when I was a kid and now when I see meme I say Me-me like I've called my grandmother all my life.

So fuck you all

[–]Meersbrook 1 point2 points ago

Mémé is a term of endearment for grand-mothers. Valid.

[–]Youreahugeidiot 1 point2 points ago

I say it me-mes just to fuck with people like you.

[–]beezerblanks 0 points1 point ago

I do this sometimes just to confuse my friends

[–]lawlshane 0 points1 point ago

you shouldn't be talking about crappy memes anyway

[–]Mikecmu 0 points1 point ago

We gotta bad ass over here....

[–]thedinosaurman 0 points1 point ago

Hey, I got it wrong when I first read It too. It's hard to know when you have never heard it pronounced before

[–]AndTheLink 0 points1 point ago

As someone whose site/email includes "meme" I gave up explaining my email address and just went with "me me" because people get it immediately. I just couldn't be bothered explaining new words to people.

[–]i_love_younicorns 0 points1 point ago

well, aren't you a pro at the internet.

[–]makesureimjewish 0 points1 point ago

not worse than when i pronounced "pseudo" as "PUH-SWAY-DOH"

that got lot's of ridicule

[–]mattieguns12 0 points1 point ago

Seen it elsewhere. Seen it elsewhere.. Havent seen this - Haaaaaaaaaa!

[–]tiberiustheiv 0 points1 point ago

One of my friends did this too...

[–]Bolt-Vanderhuge 0 points1 point ago

It's amazing: that the human race has gone from the Greeks and the Romans, the Renaissance, the Dynasties of China to... This.

[–]meowmeow43 0 points1 point ago

lol IT crowd!<3 loved that character

[–]AlterBridgeFan 0 points1 point ago

how do you say it? I am fairly new to memes and just want to know how the word is said.

[–]Bad_Badger 0 points1 point ago

I remember watching this episode of The IT Crowd and laughing for so long out of disbelief. It was just so ridiculous and that character was dead just seemingly out of no where. Hilarious show.

[–]PurplePotamus 0 points1 point ago

Guest lecturer in class today pronounced it like mems or hems.

Her whole presentation was like 6 different versions of that "What my friends think I do, what I think I do" thing

If I wasn't sitting in the front row right in front of her, I would have walked out.

[–]Executioner1337 0 points1 point ago

Upvote for epic IT Crowd scene.

[–]Deddan 0 points1 point ago

I thought me-me was the correct pronunciation when I first saw the word written down years ago, it's an understandable mistake. Just correct your friends politely and move on..

The comments here seem to show that many other people though it too. It seems the mispronunciation of meme might become a meymey.

[–]swirle13 0 points1 point ago

AN IT CROWD GIF, YES!!!

[–]Dankycheese 0 points1 point ago

Uh, how do YOU pronounce it?

[–]tHeSiD 0 points1 point ago

FAAAATHHHERRRRRRRRRRR!

[–]Tenshik 0 points1 point ago

Then my mission was successful.

[–]sh0em0nkey 0 points1 point ago

I was trying to explain what a meme was to a girl I've been banging. I ended up spelling it to her, and she specifically pronounced "Like a me me?"

I thought it was adorable, so I gave her an extra 30 second jack hammer pounding. Now all she asks for is more meme's to put her in the mood. Bitches love two me's.

[–]CaesarCheese 0 points1 point ago

This is how I imagine every American Redditor feels every time some religious zealot tries to explain why he should run the country

[–]Sillylikeagoose 0 points1 point ago

My room mate's GF does this to be ironic, since he's a big nerd and she's a dumb bitch. Its annoying as fuck since she keeps bringing up new memes that people show her.

[–]80sKid 0 points1 point ago

Sheldon from "The Big Bang Theory" taught me how to pronounce it....:)

[–]devjin 0 points1 point ago

Bah, my favorite character from the IT crowd :(

[–]IraIraIra 0 points1 point ago

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

[–]libchh 0 points1 point ago

good, at least we're rid of your stupid ass

[–]LORDJEW_VAN_CUNTFUCK 0 points1 point ago

talking about memes in real life

[–]dubdubdubdot 0 points1 point ago

Mimi is a word for vagina or pee where I'm from, lmao so funny reading comments sometimes.

[–]dhaelis 0 points1 point ago

This just made me want to watch some Flying Circus. Which episode is that from again?

[–]Pillagerguy 0 points1 point ago

Someone better call 0118999 61789 9119725 3

[–]starlinguk 0 points1 point ago

Let's face it, almost every single meme on here isn't actually a meme.

[–]spazwok 0 points1 point ago

Maybe they don't like you and say it like that on purpose in hope that you jump out a window? http://i.imgur.com/dlqYf.jpg

[–]whowantstogo 0 points1 point ago

meem right?

[–]Jedimushroom 0 points1 point ago

I use 'meymey' to refer to memes that are deliberately wrong, for instance:

"What is your favourite meymey? Mine is life guidance puppy"

"I prefer child molestation panda"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

My mom came into my room and asked, "What's this 'ALL the things! Meme I keep seeing?" I was so proud, and she even pronounced it correctly!

[–]MrTurtleSlap 0 points1 point ago

its okay, this one guy i know pronounces it as mim

[–]Vickd[!] 0 points1 point ago

[–]lessthaninfinite 0 points1 point ago

I've heard "me-me" a few times, but the other day someone pronounced it "mehm," which was almost worse

[–]abnerayag 0 points1 point ago

I used to think it was pronounced that way too until about last year. me-mes just sounded funnier to me, and since I find memes funny, well there we go. And this was despite hearing Liquid Ocelot say memes the proper way way back in MGS4 lol.

Figures I'll find out the proper pronunciation too a few weeks after saying it aloud around acquaintances the wrong way LOL.

[–]TehLittleTroll 0 points1 point ago

imma borrow this

[–]tokinwhiteman 0 points1 point ago

Love the IT Crowd. Upvote for you sir!

[–]Avista 0 points1 point ago

You had a sudden realization about how immensely nerdy and pointless you are for giving a shit and you killed yourself?

On behalf of everybody: Thank you.

[–]Inwardlens 0 points1 point ago

I heard a well educated person pronounce the word "loupe" as "lup" (rhymes with "up"). They had only ever read the word and never heard it spoken.

BTW, loupe should rhyme with loop when spoken.

[–]Yggdrazzil 0 points1 point ago*

Takes a deep breath, inches forward

I figured that if you pronounce "me" as "me". Why not pronounce meme as, "me me".

So there you have it: I say me-me. And even though I'm a foreigner I pride myself on my mastery of the English language.

How should I pronounce it?

[–]pomdecouer 0 points1 point ago

this gif should be used more often.

[–]juru1876 0 points1 point ago

I've heard worse. But I'm upvoting for that scene. One of my favorite moments of IT crowd.

[–]chumfatty 0 points1 point ago

Ahh the awesome Christopher Morris, this man is a genius. Four Lions, Brasseye, The Day to Day, On the Hour, Nathan Barley. Awesome.

[–]mastigia 0 points1 point ago

I think that might be my favorite scene from IT crowd. Upvote for you

[–]bobowzki 0 points1 point ago

You got to love the IT crowd!

[–]DasStorzer 0 points1 point ago

I LOVE that show!

[–]highexplosive 0 points1 point ago

It's clearly Throat Warbler Mangrove.
