So what you're saying is we are at the center of the universe? (/s)

No. We are at the center of the observable universe.

... no shit. Your sarcasm sense has failed you. Not to mention you are about 2 days late on that.

We are at the center of the known universe. And from the cosmological principle, we tend to know the universe equally in all directions.

Every point in the universe sees itself as the center!

Learned that one night when I was baked, thought this did an alright job of explaining it:

No matter how often i see stuff like this it never fails to blow my mind! Us, our problems, our struggles, our success etc. are so damn insignificant that it is impossible to imagine. Its unbelievable the things that we as humans still struggle with today when we are aware of this great vastness around us.

Same here. I just feel free after realizing just how insignificant everything is compare to the universe. Its amazing and unbelievable.

I would love a 3D eve online like representation of this, makes me think of the possible locations we could travel if we had mass relays and ftl drives :)

Why not link to the full-resolution version?

Also, I think National Geographic had a better execution of the same concept.

My mind = blown. There is definitely no other life out there... (sarcasm)

I don't think the human mind is capable of really grasping the scale of the universe. Oh sure, we can say it's however many million light years from point A to point B but to really understand just how unbelievably BIG that is always results in total mindfuck.

So get this. I have a 10" telescope in the garage, something I picked up online. It's a nice amateur telescope.

The most distant object I can see from my backyard is Quasar 3C-273, at a distance of about 2.4 BILLION light years away.

To put that in perspective:

If you made a scale model of the universe, a model in which the distance from the Earth to the Sun is 1 inch, then Quasar 3C-273 would be out past Neptune in real life. And that's a small fraction of the total size of the universe.

That is crazy, stupid, mind-bogglingly far. It's so far that "far" doesn't even really mean anything.

I really love this picture and would like to use it as a background on my widescreen monitor. Is there a wallpaper version that doesn't get distorted when stretched? Thanks.

Kind of sad there's no step between local stellar group and the entire Milky Way. I'd like to see where our neighbor stars reside within the whole of the stars we can see individually in the night sky.

Wouldn't the observable universe be a sphere...? I don't really see why they used cylinders at all, since it doesn't show any sort of units or scale...

(Sorry if this comes across as overly anal-retentive)

How the... what. Mind blown. Anyone else experience a very peculiar sense of... I don't know what, when trying to process information like this? So very odd. And here we are on the internet arguing about grammar.
