Believe it or not, this happened to me four years ago.. Went into surgery, it was removed, I can still see, but it was nasty as hell..

Probably hookworms. Hookworm filariae in the soil can enter through the body wall (in humans, most likely via bare feet) and travel throughout the body. The goal is to get to the intestines so adults have a chance to deposit eggs in the feces, where the lifecycle may continue. They can also, unfortunately, end up in the eye.
