http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2009/01/oh-deer-street-view-and-road-safety.html

Google's response: "Gathering the imagery for Street View requires quite a bit of driving; as such, we take safety very seriously. Unfortunately, accidents do happen -- as some people have noticed, one of our Street View cars hit a deer while driving on a rural road in upstate New York. Due to several user requests using the "Report a concern" tool, these images are no longer available in Street View.

The driver was understandably upset, and promptly stopped to alert the local police and the Street View team at Google. The deer was able to move and had left the area by the time the police arrived. The police explained to our driver that, sadly, this was not an uncommon occurrence in the region -- the New York State Department of Transportation estimates that 60,000-70,000 deer collisions happen per year in New York alone -- and no police report needed to be filed.

Because this is on our minds, we want to take the opportunity to share some reminders on how to avoid an accident and what to do should you find yourself in such a situation. Robert Sinclair from AAA New York suggests the following tips for drivers:

Pay extra attention during pre-dawn and dusk hours. Slow down. If a deer runs in front of your vehicle, driving at or below the speed limit reduces the likelihood of serious injury to yourself and your passengers. Buckle up. Your odds of walking away from a collision with a deer improve dramatically if you and all your passengers are wearing seat belts. Use your high beams (when no oncoming cars are present) and watch for the reflection of deer eyes and silhouettes on the shoulders of roads.

If you won't be able to avoid colliding with a deer: Don't swerve. Few drivers die or are seriously injured in direct collisions with deer. The greater risk is from veering into oncoming traffic, a tree, or off the road. Brake until the last fraction of a second before impact, then let off your brakes. This will cause the front of your car to rise, increasing the odds that the struck deer will pass underneath your car, rather than be lifted into your windshield.

If you do strike a deer, do not try to touch it or move it yourself. Despite your kind intentions, an injured deer might panic and harm you. Contact police or other authorities for assistance.

We're sad that this accident occurred and we consider ourselves fortunate that our driver was not injured."

hit a deer while driving on a rural road in upstate New York

As someone who frequents such roads, I couldn't help but chuckle when I read this. I used to work an early morning shift at the grocery store and driving before dawn makes you realize who really runs the town.

[–]zimtastic 7 points8 points ago

There's really that many deer out there eh? How many you you say you see on an average morning?

[–]CheshireC4t 10 points11 points ago

If I had to guess, I'd say on a 10 minute drive you'd see somewhere on the order 50-100 at that time of day. It also really depends where you are; obviously there are a lot on the farms and in the suburbs, not so many in the towns. They're actually a bit of a problem in the county I'm in now, I've seen them out and about on sidewalks (small town, but still unusual) and in gardens.

They're usually pretty smart about the roads. Sometimes they get confused and if you're careful you can watch it happen; they seem to freak when they're unsure and don't act quickly/decisively enough--they've also learned that drivers will react and try to avoid them. In that moment you can see them freeze and it's the weirdest feeling because it seems like if the situation had unfolded at all differently, the deer and the driver would both know what to do and get out of each other's way.

[–]zimtastic 2 points3 points ago

That's an incredible amount of deer!

I'm glad I haven't been in the situation where I'm driving straight at a deer. It sounds very scary not knowing exactly how best to avoid it.

[–]ZiggyZombie 3 points4 points ago

Here is how you avoid a deer, you see a flash of light, put your foot over the breaks. If that light turns out to be a deer, hit the fucking breaks.

Source: First 10 years of my driving life in Wisconsin and never even hit a deer not even once.

Anecdotal evidence supports a hypothesis that deer are more likely to decide to head butt your car after you miss it than you are to actually hit the deer.

[–]TCsnowdream 1 point2 points ago

Unfortunately that's not always a possibility. There are times when a dear will just pop out of a bush at the side of the road, and you have almost no reaction time. This happened to me, and the deer hit and cracked my left front fender. I was lucky enough to just be accelerating after a stop-sign, so I was only going ~20MpH.

The thing did, quite literally, pop-out with no chance of braking.

[–]MACnugget27 -2 points-1 points ago

I have hit three deer, and braked in time to miss at least 100. The three I hit were in NO WAY avoidable. Not in any way whatsoever. The second one HIT ME while I was STOPPED at a stop sign. Smashed the side of my car and cracked the window. Upstate New York has a ridiculous amount of deer and windy roads. Even going below the speed limit at all times and hovering over the break, as I always did at even the slightest sign of something on the side of the road, does not change the fact that if you drive for any amount of time in that area you WILL hit a deer (unless you have lottery-winner luck).

[–]kruksog 1 point2 points ago

Here in Montana deer are looked at as rats. There are too fucking many. They're everywhere.

[–]aspring -2 points-1 points ago

And that is why hunting is popular in West Virginia

[–]MACnugget27 0 points1 point ago

The deer population in Montana somehow affects hunters' preferences in West Virginia?

[–]railroad-redditor 1 point2 points ago

I don't know about this guy, but growing up in rural northern Michigan I probably saw 100-150 deer in the fields between my house and school every morning.

They really are a nuisance. They're like rats or something.

[–]oni-san 2 points3 points ago*

How entrenched are the deer-mafia in upstate New York? Edit: I fail at basic spelling.

[–]CheshireC4t 1 point2 points ago

It's pretty bad. Every once in a while a driver lands in one of their traps, their car gets taken to the chop shop. They run the auto gangs in town, have the whole drug trade monopolized. The "I don't know how to cross the road" thing is just a front.

[–]oni-san 0 points1 point ago

And the cops don't do anything? Or are they paid off in deer crackers?

[–]DiscoNude 0 points1 point ago

Whilst driving down one of those roads in that part of the state a group of deer simultaneously bent over to feed at the edge of the road just as I was driving by. It was almost as if they were bowing as I passed, as if they were paying their respects me as the king of the road. Cool feeling - but I know that's not true.

[–]S4ndals 4 points5 points ago

I couldn't help but laugh at this response to concerned peoples. Don't get me wrong, it still sucks, but shit happens. Living out in the middle of the woods, I've hit 3 deer, although technically 1 ran into my car.

[–]mariettablack 1 point2 points ago

Not that its a competiton but my little s10 has hit 11 deer. So far no cosmetic damage but shes blown brake lines and wheel cilenders trying to lessen impact. Ive lucked out and the.biggest buck ive hit was only around 200 pounds. Its all in fun till your on a motorcycle. Then its life and death. No joke two bikers were lost last year localy to deer strikes.

[–]IFUCKINGLOVEMETH 13 points14 points ago

I like how they threw a curveball and started talking about how to avoid deer collisions.

That's definitely for the dumb people who A) Are upset about this happening in the first place, and want to blame google, and B) who are so easily persuaded by some clever red herring rhetoric.

This is the PR version of the superfluous, ubiquitous safety labels out there. World, you so silly.

[–]npgz 7 points8 points ago

What is hitting a deer a bad thing? Seriously that shit is unavoidable. We say "the deer hit us" out here.

[–]styckk 1 point2 points ago

these images are no longer available in Street View

that's why I couldn't find it :(

[–]family_bat 0 points1 point ago

http://g.co/maps/q2eay

You can see where they cut half the road out of street view.

[–]ferrets_bueller 21 points22 points ago

I think we're already in a rut

[–]DaiTengu 1 point2 points ago

you antlern how to write puns, they just come naturally.

[–]Subito_forte 36 points37 points ago

Yep, this definitely resembles their policy on handling privacy complaints....

[–]The_Adventurist 4 points5 points ago

Their privacy policy is actually much more transparent than many other giant web companies like facebook. Facebook basically does whatever it wants with your info and fuck your privacy. Google mostly tries to treat their users fairly. Of course, then there's Google in China a few years ago, which is another story.

[–]lumberjacklukee 6 points7 points ago

You get an upvote becuase the caption made me laugh. Though I went "daawwww" after I realized it was still a fawn.

MMmm... Deer meat is so good...

And I'm from California (◠◡◠)

[–]jlennon4422 4 points5 points ago

I'm from san francisco, and I have to agree; deer is delicous! I've only had it once, and yes, it was roadkill

[–]Anthropophobiac 3 points4 points ago

The best kind ;)

[–]alukima 0 points1 point ago

I'm in SF too, just from Kansas (which some people here consider the south) and I love it. I've seen it on menus here.

[–]jlennon4422 0 points1 point ago

Really? where?

[–]HellaSober 0 points1 point ago

You can usually substitute in elk meat for beef at Roam Burger in Cow Hollow.

[–]msk105 2 points3 points ago

Deer meat is good if it has rein in front of it!

And I'm from Finland.

[–]Anthropophobiac -3 points-2 points ago

What's rein?!

[–]qwertytwo -1 points0 points ago

A steering wheel for horses

[–]Anthropophobiac 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I see, that kind of rein.

But that makes no sense in the context that he used it... not to me at least...

[–]Miscellaneous_Item 0 points1 point ago

Never had Deer meat

And I'm from California

[–]Anthropophobiac 1 point2 points ago

You should try it! It's delicious.

[–]Jafoos 1 point2 points ago

[–]RocketKing 1 point2 points ago

Is the street really named "five points road"??? ಠ_ಠ

[–]Tolvinar 3 points4 points ago

I like how the road is called "Five Points Road". Where anything you hit with your car is worth five points.

[–]10NOs1YesMeansYes 3 points4 points ago

I, for one, have never seen this before.

[–]miyog 0 points1 point ago

I have marked my calendar to repost this image in approximately three months.

[–]Lewkylewk 0 points1 point ago

I think its safe to say they're a little touchy on the situation.

[–]flypaper1001 0 points1 point ago

[–]borkborkbork99 0 points1 point ago

Five points? That fawn doesn't even have two!

(showing myself out now)

[–]jfk08c 0 points1 point ago

When you travel down the road on street view, the image cuts out right before the driveway the deer ran out from.. Google covering their tracks to avoid that deer homicide charge

[–]System6 0 points1 point ago

Thanks. I'm drunk and this was sad as shit. Fuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhcccccckk.

[–]unclewalty 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to be staying at that exact address in 11 days. WTF.

[–]Polyether 0 points1 point ago

Good to know we can repost front page material from 3 days ago and still make it to the front.

[–]girl_with_a_curl 0 points1 point ago

Ahh yes, a wonderful example of the OTHER thing the Rochester Area is famous for (the first being garbage plates of course) - deer accidents.

[–]I3gumbyI3 0 points1 point ago

I had a deer hit my car one time. That was interesting.

[–]hedeman 0 points1 point ago

It had it 1sec of fame

[–]pinkmatador 0 points1 point ago
