I don't really know much about this boomstick which he's wielding, but the explosion seemed rigged and the people seemed to be up in the front end of the bus.

I'm guessing it's just a show of force, because firing into a bus full of hostages with a BTR isn't a great idea either.

I read an article a while back about what the Russian Navy does when they come across pirates: they disable the engine of their vessel, take all of their supplies, tow them out to sea, and set them adrift. They definitely do not fuck around.

What is really fucked up is the terrorists killed MAYBE one hostage(The only gunshot victim. Not actually stated whether the terrorists shot him or the CT team). All the other deaths are attributed to gas according to Doctor Andrei Seltsovsky who was Moscow's health committee chairman.

            Humans are not as easy to kill via explosion as you think. Check out the Operation Valkyrie episode of Mythbusters. They blew the hell out of a shipping container, and the shock sensors indicated that, barring shrapnel injuries, despite the absolutely horrifying devastation, there would be survivors in the room. In the case of the microbus, they will be stunned, deafened, bleeding, and disoriented, though, leading to a serious ass kicking by security personnel.
            In the case of the "magic stick" btw, that really isn't much in the way of explosives, but then, it's not much of a vehicle, either.

              It's likely a very low-velocity explosive. It doesn't take much to break glass, especially if your holding the bomb right against the glass.

              Flash bangs can commonly break glass, but they have nowhere near the percussive force to cause severe hydrostatic shock which is what is required to damage internal organs through explosive force alone.

              Also since it was a training exercise its possible/likely that the bus inside was rigged with low explosives to blow off panels and such, without injuring the occupants.

                If you look really closely in this video you see that the guy that ran and hit the window gets up off of the ground at just about :30 into the video. He's missing his helmet and he gets up near the front door while presumably speaking on his walkie on his shoulder. He walks to the back of the vehicle and is seen speaking on his walkie for the remainder of the video. He is holding something orange in his right hand the entire time. If you press "1" on your keyboard for the timing shortcut it gives you enough time to follow his path.
