I saw "gesundheits minister" in there and thought you were pulling a Charlie Chaplin, and then remembered that "gesundheit" actually means health, and isn't just something you say when someone sneezes.

No umlauts.

Not quite, too many adjectives :/ Only works with nouns. Aussengesundheitskanzlerminister could be combined for example (foreign health chancellor minister).

[–]quaste 92 points93 points ago*

I just leave this here

EDIT: Downvotes for linking facts? Nice.

EDIT2: after reading further down: Nobody is trying to "out diversify" the US as somebody put it. Germans know very well that the US are way more of a melting pot than germany is.

However, Germany came a long way - not without problems, and not without limiting immigration, but most countries are.

[–]telepathyLP 17 points18 points ago

he was wrong about being hostile, but the immigration policy is pretty harsh... then again, getting a visa to america is pretty difficult too, i had to try four times

[–]denisbider 32 points33 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I gave you an upvote back, but the fact that Germany has a large foreign-born population doesn't mean its immigration is easy.

It used to be easy for low-skilled workers from Turkey, who were needed in steel mills in the 1960s, but didn't leave like they were expected to when the industry no longer needed them. Their children are now a social problem (poor school performance and youth crime). Those people count for a majority of foreign-born people in Germany.

That's how Germany learned that immigration policy should not be too easy.

[–]Daax865 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. Just because they have a large immigrant population, it doesn't mean that these immigrants aren't marginalized. You are well informed, good sir. My undergraduate degree was in German/World Business, and I lived there for six months, etc. What you describe is exactly what has happened there. I also believe that the general native German attitude (mainly among the older folks) towards immigrants is only perpetuating the youth crime. People sometimes tend to assume the role you assign them.

On the brighter side, I have noticed a more accepting, kindhearted attitude towards immigrants from the younger generation. Hopefully the xenophobic attitudes are on the decline.

[–]ndw10325 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From a comparative governments class focusing on Germany, another issue is of course that many of said immigrants are hesitant to give up their previous citizenship due to the very real potential for families to push their siblings, nieces, nephews, uncles, cousins, whatever, out of inheritance and the like in their native country if they take German citizenship. It is far from an easy situation and is certainly considered a serious social issue in modern Germany.

The sign is frankly silly.

[–]fernguts 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wonder if the "immigrants" to Saudi Arabia actual citizens, or just temporary guest workers who have to go home when their contract is over? I suspect the latter.

The prime minister of sweden is 1/48 black

That's not possible. No matter how many generations you go back, your number of ancestors is a power of two (assuming no inbreeding). That means any fraction of ethnicity would be a binary fraction (which 1/48 isn't). It's like the epic of Gilgamesh, who was supposedly 1/3 human and 2/3 god (which again doesn't work unless incest occurs).

[–]b-schroeder 30 points31 points ago

They love speaking English, even with each other. It can be quite funny at times. One of my German friends speaks practically flawless English but once graced us with this gem : "So today I was licking my boss's ass...", when he had intended to say "kissing my boss's ass". I think.

[–]hawos 16 points17 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know about "speaking" English, but we certainly like to give stuff english or english sounding names. Like "Blue motion"(car technology stuff) or Key-Account-Manager "Facility Manager", because who wants to be a Hausmeister (Janitor).

[–]b-schroeder 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea, I think you're right. The majority of the time I hear it it's when I'm with my friends, and they usually speak in English for the benefit of the people in our group who don't speak German, but it's kind of funny when they branch off into their own conversations and they start out in English.

I don't know about German, but I know that in French, for "kissing someone's ass", we say literally "licking someone's ass". So, that's perhaps the same thing in German, so he made this made when translating literally.

Well "of German ancestry" just means the family had a German shepherd 150 years ago, doesn't it? Why do Americans put so much worth into the ancestry of someone and call them Irish-American or German-American even though they're nothing but American and have been for generations. How do you even determine something like that in a melting pot like the US? Everyone's probably got some English, Irish, Polish, German, Italian ancestors somewhere. Do you just pick your favourite?

That's cool and all, but America has huge problems in the whole "land of opportunity" department. Ya sure, the country is made of immigrants so it makes perfect sense that they're in office. Unless you're native american, you're an immigrant and that's all there is to it. But the whole "land of opportunity" thing is now false. There are multiple articles on the lack of social mobility in the States, and the way things are going, it's only becoming worse.

These articles all have something to do with the lack of social mobility in the US:

False. Maybe you missed it where Penny Wong was the vocal seconder of the motion for a pro-gay-marriage platform change at the Labor Party National Conference in December 2011. And if you did miss that, then you probably also missed her historic address to the South Australian Labor Party State Convention in late 2010 where she broke Cabinet solidarity to support gay marriage.

Good point. I should have phrased it better, it prevents a flood of immigrants that wouldn't contribute to the society. Anyone willing to live there for 7+ years without the rights of a citizen is clearly there because they really want to be a citizen vs just reaping the benefits without earning them.

I live in New Mexico, I don't really see a lot of anti-Mexican sentiment around here, except with republican politicians who want to keep illegal immigrants out. And even then, it's hard to be anti-Mexican when whites are the minority and Hispanics are the majority.

I love Germany, in fact I've been considering moving there. But so long as you place emphasis on the ethnic diversity of organizations you are consciously allowing ethnicity to factor into it's make up. That is not equal opportunity that is prejudice.

It's kind of like trying to force a truly altruistic act so that you can brag about it to further your agenda.

I like when other countries try to out diversify the United States, it's really cute actually. Our president is half Ethiopian/half white who came from parents who were both atheists, our secretary of state is a woman plus the five other women in Obama's cabinet, our attorney general is black, our secretary of the interior is Mexican, our secretary of energy is Chinese, our secretary of veterans affairs is Japanese, our Congress has people from every race, almost every major religion, as well as those who are foreign born, the mayors of New York and Chicago are Jewish, the mayors of Philadelphia, Detroit, and Baltimore are black, the mayors of Los Angeles and San Antonio are hispanic, and the mayor of Houston is gay. Germany will never even come close to being as diverse as the United States.

Wow, what happened here? Everytime I see a thread referencing my beloved home country, the majority of reddit seems to love every single thing Germany does, no matter how stupid it is (and no matter how made up it is). If I knew that I only had to claim that Germany offers more opportunities than the USA to break that unhealthy habit...

Seriously, I have no idea who designed that sign - maybe it's fake, maybe it's supposed to attract American investors or professionals. Either way, no need to hate on Germany, because "Germany" didn't make this sign. Similarily (?), not everything "Germany" does is great or applicaple to other countries.
