They're sorry? (i.imgur.com)

Homophobes like Fred Phelps aren't wrong about the bible. The bible is wrong about morality.
[–]Slayner 64 points65 points66 points 4 months ago
Good for them. I appreciate the fact they are actually out in the streets and not behind a computer screen. Good for these people.
[–]VeteranKamikaze 18 points19 points20 points 4 months ago
You realize these people are the "Pray the gay away, homosexuality is a disease and we can cure you" brainwasher cunts right?
[–]lillake 22 points23 points24 points 4 months ago
Marion Foundation, they're not sorry. They're still homophobes and bigots just pretending not to be.

Even if they are homophobes and bigots I respect them for apologising for it - sometimes it's not possible to overcome deeply ingrained personal bigotry, even if you know and understand that it's wrong. It's not everyday you see religious people who are able to respect those whose lifestyle they disagree with.
[–]icameliac 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
Hmmm I see what you're saying but let's say I was stabbing you. I stabbed you repeatedly but in between stabs I said "I'm sorry!" but continue to stab you. Just because I've added empty apologies in between stabs doesnt make everything ok.
[–]itisgoodtobetheking 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
A fair point, but I'm assuming these people aren't shouting homophobic remarks and then apologising - they're not necessarily apologising for their own behaviour (as in your stabbing-me-and-apologising scenario) but more for the behaviour of other Christians.
[–]icameliac 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
No they weren't shouting homophobic remarks right then but I'm sure they have before, also I have read a lot of not so great things about those people, since that picture is a couple months old I believe and although I can appreciate the gesture, it just doesn't seem 100% to me.
[–]PraiseBeToScience 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago

I don't. Save the apologies. Fix the issues. One person voting for human dignity is more powerful than 1000 apologizing for people voting against it.
Also, sexuality is not a lifestyle. It's a immutable trait. The lifestyles of homosexuals are just as varied and diverse as heterosexuals. Their lifestyle is independent of their sexuality.

Sure, but isn't a Christian apologising for the bigotry of other Christians a good thing, in that it shows the world that not every Christian is a nutty hate-monger?
sexuality is not a lifestyle
I realise that now. I wasn't thinking and it was a poor choice of word, but I hope you can see beyond that. Replace the word 'lifestyle' with 'sexuality'. Hindsight's a bitch.

Dammit, and I thought reason came up for a moment... Sigh...

Source?
[–]clockworkgirl21 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
How do you know this? Maybe they're just liberal Christians.
[–]Mattman624 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
How does this have that many upvotes?
[–]jenniferwillow 13 points14 points15 points 4 months ago
Bring back our dead (in a non zombified state), reunite our children with their reformed and newly enlightened parents, and edit your so-called 'holy book' to reflect that it is not a sin to be born gay. Then I will consider forgiveness, but I will never forget.
[–]libervore 7 points8 points9 points 4 months ago
It is rather odd... I suspect it of being bait. No matter how sorry they are I'm still not joining their funny little fan club. Unless they are sorry enough to give me some money. Then I would consider sharing paypal info. Still wouldn't go to church though.
[–]TheDiscoBastard 6 points7 points8 points 4 months ago
Why is this getting downvoted? It's true. The christian community feigns kindness either to recruit more followers or better their religion's reputation so they don't lose any followers.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Yeah, they've called peace talks in the past and then used that to re-arm and attack. Just like Kony..
[–]libervore 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
I had the same question! People are funny.
[–]wrathborne -2 points-1 points0 points 4 months ago
Thats more the the Catholics, though you're half right about the rest of the christian culture.
[–]halofreak7777 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
I see your the the.
[–]Blue_Shift 16 points17 points18 points 4 months ago
That's nice.
[–]Chasers85 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
This is the "hate the sin, not the sinner," crowd. They are a hell of a lot better than Phelps and his rambling horde of assholes, but they still see gays as sinners who will one day pay for their sins. It's just a more watered down, easy to swallow version of Westboro.
[–]JediSquirrels 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
I lol'ed at easy to swallow.
How do you know they see gays as sinners? My Christian cousin thinks viewing gays as sinners is "fucking stupid."
[–]Chasers85 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Here's article one, initially positive of their actions:http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2010/06/30/christians-protesting-at-pride
Only after a little digging did this come out: http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2010/07/01/re-christians-protesting-at-pride
[–]PraiseBeToScience 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
I disagree, I think they are a hell of a lot worse. Phelps' bigotry is easier to spot and counter. This bigotry is wrapped in niceties and politeness. Therefore it has for more ability to cause harm and it's harder to ferret out because, "well they're such nice people!"
It wasn't the Phelps crowd that put prop 8 over the top, it was this crowd. The crowd that says I don't hate gay people, but homosexuality is a sin and I don't want it taught to my children that it's ok. Therefore gays can't get married.
[–]clockworkgirl21 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
How do you know they believe all of that?
Expert testimony from the Prop 8 trials. Part of what the defense argued was that Prop 8 was driven by purely animus, that it had no rational basis. To prove this point, they had experts analyze and testify to the various themes used by the prop 8 campaign. For a long time, Prop 8 looked like it wouldn't pass, but the poll numbers moved in a statistically significant way that correlates to when prop 8 proponents changed their messaging to focus on the "think of the children message." The message was that children would be taught in schools that it was okay to be homosexual.
The emails of the prop 8 campaign obtained through discovery showed this messaging was designed specifically to target the love the sinner hate the sin crowd.

[–]ZiggyZombie 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
So wait do we know they are still religious or are the former fundies that are apologizing for having been apart of the church and supporting it.
The one on the right made me think they were now atheists/agnostics that are apologizing for having been close minded bigots.
[–]dakkr -1 points0 points1 point 4 months ago
No they're Christians, they're just more liberal/open-minded now (or at least they claim to be).
[–]ZiggyZombie 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Ok, I didn't know if people were just making assumptions.
[–]shan6 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
That's nice of them. Their beliefs are still silly, but it's a nice sentiment toward the gay community.
[–]paki123 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Technically they aren't real christians.
[–]flatlander00321 8 points9 points10 points 4 months ago
Technically, no one really is.
[–]Zapooo 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Its stuff like this that makes me NOT hate all Christians.
[–]Adviser_Moppet 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
In a way it's kind of good but if they're still going to church and supporting an organization that discriminates against LGBT people it's really not doing anything by saying sorry. It's like Catholics frowning on pedophilia but then going back to their churches, putting money into the collection plates, supporting Catholic schools and baptizing their children. I don't know where these people are from but if their from a LGBT friendly church it would look a whole lot better from my perspective.

Real question is when do we get our turn.
Oh never.
[–]jon_laing 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
I want to be optimistic about how to read this photo. I think I'll just do that until given a reason to fall back on cynicism.
[–]DietCandy 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Why is this a question?
[–]profoundlybored 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
They need to focus their energy more toward the guy with the far right sign. He used to BANG the BIBLE!
[–]tippletap 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Catholics have a lot of corrupt supporters, Christianity has a lot of corrupt supporters. BUT Some Catholics/Christians follow the same patterns atheists do, they study everything they are faced with and chose what they believed in. In my country you can generally believe in whatever you want, but as long as you believe in God you can say you're Christian. Most of us wouldn't call ourselves anything - not even atheist. But if you do consider yourself Christian, fellow Christians know and accept that you probably believe in something different. Basically, we are not brainwashed, we believe what we want and are accepted for it.
