I'm pretty sure that kid found it quite easy to hate 4chan.

[–]Stephen_W_Hawking 2 points3 points ago

So while destroying one computer, he's on another updating /b. fantastic

[–]runachirun 51 points52 points ago

obvious troll is obvious.

[–]patefoisgras 5 points6 points ago

And oblivious trolls are oblivious.

THIS ENDS NOW.

[–]god12 0 points1 point ago

Almost man. Almost.

[–]CowboyNinjaD 14 points15 points ago

It was probably better that he ultimately broke the hard drive. Dad goes to fire up the computer... clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick...

Kid doesn't say a fucking word. No way to prove the hard drive didn't just fail.

[–]d4vi3j03 3 points4 points ago

yeh kids just gotta "act" dumb. (seems like he pretty much is)

[–]steve0suprem0 0 points1 point ago

thing is, when you're dumb, it's very hard to act that way in the face of parental backlash.

EDIT: ask me how i know. no, don't. i'll just tell you. i was once a dumb kid.

[–]Piratiko 34 points35 points ago

See, the thing with 4chan is, because it's all anonymous, I can never tell if these things are real or not.

For all we know, that entire thread was one guy.

Sure, just run a magnet over your hard drive seven times and the interface will change to allow you to save your threads.

[–]LikeGoldAndFaceted 5 points6 points ago

Spoken like a true /b/tard.

[–]darklooshkin 0 points1 point ago

You know, I've gone there for years but have never really done more than post a few images and make a few comments. To my everlasting shame, I would be a terrible tutor.

Thing is, that thread is ancient.

Still funny, 09 it was posted, I was sure i saw it long before 09..

[–]seahorseolympics 0 points1 point ago

it had to be a troll. i mean, how does a kid who doesn't know what system32 does get to the HDD of a laptop so fast?

[–]kakesu 93 points94 points ago

My question: if he nuked dad's work PC, what PC is he posting on 4chan from? And why wasn't he just using that the whole time?

Who's the real troll here? The world may never know.

[–]aaybma 22 points23 points ago

The biggest tip off to me is the whole magnet situation. He was taking photos of the two screens, which were different resolutions, but he didn't take a photo of the magnet, the thing which is least likely to be lying around. That plus, you know, its made up

  • Buzz Killington.

[–]JK_SLY 15 points16 points ago

Good point. Also at the end when he said his dad was pulling onto the drive. If he really was, would he bother to write that out or would he instead be too busy shitting himself?

[–]erratically_sporadic 17 points18 points ago

Obviously fake. First response post and this happens? Hm.

[–]hoboa 24 points25 points ago

Fake or not, still really funny

[–][deleted] 53 points54 points ago

sometimes...sometimes...a household has more than one computer. sometimes, the second computer is even a "portable personal computing device" that can be moved from place to place.

[–]B_Master 17 points18 points ago*

Still a bit fishy. This is how it would have had to happen:

Read 4chan thread
Attempt to triforce
Fail because the batch file wasn't run as administrator
Realize that was the problem
Figure out how to run as administrator
Run as administrator
Crash computer
Go get another computer
Log on to 4chan and find the exact same thread without any link or reference of any kind
Start posting again

[–]Garby 6 points7 points ago

This picture is old as fuck, so I guarantee you he was using XP, which I do not recall needing Run as Admin to be done to run batch files like this.

[–]TempusFrangit 9 points10 points ago

The pc of his 'dad' was running vista, he might've also been on vista.

But it's fake. Look at the timestamps. His dad was supposed to be home in 10 to 15 minutes, while he was messing with the magnet almost 1 hour after having said that.

[–]War_Junkie 2 points3 points ago

It's anonymous.

Maybe his dad came home after the part where he says he'll be back in 10-15 minutes, and another anon took over his role?

[–]B_Master 0 points1 point ago

I'm no windows expert, but wouldn't you have to be an administrator to delete system32?

[–]sebzim4500 0 points1 point ago

He was probably running in an admin account, that really isn't very unusual because some games require admin.

[–]asharkey3 0 points1 point ago

if it was his dad's work computer then the profile was probably already set up with Admin. Most people give themselves god control if at all possible

[–]ressis74 0 points1 point ago

Especially since windows gives it to you by default, and people don't seek to limit themselves.

Even if they wanted a normal account, they wouldn't know how to get one.

[–]asharkey3 0 points1 point ago

not always by default. I have had multiple machines where I needed to manually give myself full admin

[–]MrDeodorant 0 points1 point ago

The father's computer was [allegedly] running Vista, which is why trying it with an XP disk wouldn't work.

[–]Xestas 7 points8 points ago

Definately fake, I mean he was going on about his dad coming home any second. Yet it took about an hour before he really arrived. And conveniently just after he whiped the HDD? I am calling bullshit.

[–]lulamirite 1 point2 points ago

definately, whiped

[–]indianofthegroup 1 point2 points ago

[–]RNRSaturday 2 points3 points ago

We'll never know. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. And like that, poof. He's gone.

[–]zang99 2 points3 points ago

the kid obviously said it was his dads (work) computer. i don't want to explain the rest to you.

[–]skizfrenik_syco 0 points1 point ago

i was wondering the same the whole time i read it

[–]Thorvalde 0 points1 point ago

Laptop? Phone?

[–]d4vi3j03 -1 points0 points ago

Dads work pc was probably a laptop. kid wanted to browse /b/ in living room while watching tv, proceed to crash computer... initiate panic mode go to house desktop in computer room

[–]ArsenalOwl 14 points15 points ago

How do we know he was never heard from again if it was all anonymous?

[–]OmniscientBeing 12 points13 points ago

the cure for cancer was on that hdd....GOOD ONE 4CHAN

[–]lambent_human 38 points39 points ago

No it's not.

[–]yogimaster89 52 points53 points ago

I think you meant "it's hard to like 4chan".

[–]Darktidemage 8 points9 points ago

You realize this is fake right? The guy is like "Why yes I do have a large magnet my dad uses or holding metal together, it looks like this" and posts a picture of it. that is pretty obviously fake.

[–]brogurt 3 points4 points ago

Or he didn't want to take a pic of it so he just googled strong magnet or something and found the pic and copied and pasted it. Much easier. People are way too skeptical. Why can't we just enjoy something instead of wondering if its fake? I don't let my my wife in the same room as me when I browse reddit cuz she sits there and asks "Is that real?" to everything I view. Just sit back and enjoy the show. I'd rather just enjoy the show.

[–]aemilius_lepidus 3 points4 points ago

Actually, the kid should be just fine, if he pretends nothing happened.

In case the magnet did header crash the HD, he should just pretend nothing happened. If his dad is somewhat tech savy, he will know header crashed hd when he hears one and will know his data is lost no matter what.

[–]jazman71092 6 points7 points ago

Even if it is a troll, any idiot who would take advice from /b/ deserves it.

[–]james9075 2 points3 points ago

how do you get so lucky on 4chan? everytime i go on there its like this

[–]ceri23 4 points5 points ago

What we didn't know is that the dad was famed researcher John P. Smith and he had left the computer up during the day to finish sequencing the protein combination that would cure all forms of disease (genetic or otherwise) by making our bodies instantly regenerate to a mid-20s self regardless of the problem. It meant immortality. 4chan just killed us all.

[–]RepostsOnReposts 18 points19 points ago

How does this INTERNET GOLD only have 7 comments?? Who cares if it's a troll trolling trolls - it's goddamn hilarious! Haven't laughed so hard browsing r/funny in a long fucking time. Upvotes for you, my man!

[–]goberflunk 4 points5 points ago

[–]nefffffffffff 1 point2 points ago

AMA request: the kid that bricked his dad's work computer

[–]hoody8 1 point2 points ago

Can you actually delete C:\Windows\System32 when you're running Windows? Surely there would be a protection error or something? And I'm pretty sure in Vista and 7 there are permissions and UAC that would prevent you from doing this (Most people do not run their systems with Administrator privileges).

[–]Rosenkrantz_ 0 points1 point ago

We're talking about Windows here, man. Windows.

[–]comprehension 1 point2 points ago

Old as the internet

[–]norelevantcomments 1 point2 points ago

due to my excessive use of reddit i have become immune to it's hilarity. but this.... i quite literally cried from laughing. thank you, you magnificent sir!

[–]DrSpaceMan343 1 point2 points ago

/b/ kind of saved him if you think about it. dad comes home to a hard drive that doesnt work all the kid has to do is say "i dont know dad it wasnt me" and the dad should end up assuming the hard drive just failed. where as if he comes home to xp being installed on a vista machine he would have to assume the kid downloaded a virus and tried to fix it.

[–]IntellingetUsername 4 points5 points ago

As much as I would like to believe this, lets face it - it's faker than Pamela Anderson's tits.

[–]darklooshkin 6 points7 points ago

Just because it's fake doesn't stop you from enjoying it. Which is another lesson Pamela Anderson's tits have taught us.

[–]ThatsSoKafkaesque 1 point2 points ago

it's got to be your first day on the internet if you think any of that was real.

[–]up_n_atom 1 point2 points ago

See, this is whats so good about 4chan. I for one hope this actually happened, cause thats fucking hilarious.

[–]Dirrwen 1 point2 points ago

Old as fuck. If I had a nickel for every time I've seen this I'd be Bill Gates.

[–]boniggy 5 points6 points ago

having a lot of nickles doesn't make you bill gates.... just sayin

[–]Dirrwen 1 point2 points ago

But having tons and tons and tons and tons does.

[–]ellisrgreen 2 points3 points ago

Even if I had a lot of money I still would not be Bill Gates. Only Bill Gates can be Bill Gates.

[–]cyberfunk42 0 points1 point ago*

A nickel weighs 5g, which makes for 90.8 nickels per pound meaning 181,600 nickels per ton coming to a whopping...

$9,080.

Tobe a billionaire, you would have to collect 110,132.159 tons of nickels.

To be Bill Gates, you would need 6,167,400.9 tons, or 1,120,000,003,440 nickels. That would take up 27,225,091,700,000 (2.72×1013 )cubic feet - enough to fill 309,090,909 Olympic sized swimming pools.

So no,

tons and tons and tons and tons

of nickels will not make you Bill Gates.

But you could pull off a hell of a Scrooge McDuck!

tl;dr - Bill Gates is worth 309 million swimming pools full of nickels.

Edit: oh god, I can't believe I just spent half an hour figuring that out.

[–]Geekv2 0 points1 point ago

Bill Gate's worth = $61 billion

$61 billion / 309 million swimming pools = $197 per pool = 3940 nickels per Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Something's not right here...

Also:

27,225,091,700,000 cubic feet / 1,120,000,003,440 nickels = 24.31 cubic feet per nickel. DAAAAAMN those be big nickels!

[–]cyberfunk42 0 points1 point ago

Damn. That's what I get for trying to do math (read: be a smart ass) at a [7]...

[–]brogurt 1 point2 points ago

Internet rule #837: If you can't re-enjoy and repost, just ignore it. Others are trying to enjoy it.

[–]Dirrwen 0 points1 point ago

I apologize, then.

[–]Ikeren 0 points1 point ago

Hilarious even if fake.

[–]partyplatypus 0 points1 point ago

So....so hard to believe

[–]redteamleader 0 points1 point ago

I WANT TO BELIEVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[–]j1zzfist 0 points1 point ago

I JUST WANTED TO FUCKING TRIFORCE!

[–]eskimobob117 0 points1 point ago

Holy amazing.

[–]logsdod 0 points1 point ago

Either the icing on the cake or more proof he's trolling: del requires either confirmation or an additional /Q argument before deleting

[–]big_red__man 0 points1 point ago

Every now and then they come up with something funny but 99% of it is racism and pedophilia. It's easy to hate racism and pedophilia.

[–]gmkirk13 0 points1 point ago

its things like this that make me hate the internet

[–]asharkey3 0 points1 point ago

4chan just completely redeemed itself in my eyes. It really pains me that anything that says "delete" could be trusted

[–]siddububba 0 points1 point ago

Some kids did this to all the computers in my school's lab. I couldn't help but laugh, but i felt bad at the same time.

[–]deusvires 0 points1 point ago

Downvoting for troll. The guy takes pictures of the screens and posts them but not the uncommon giant magnet that his dad has just lying around?

I call good troll with some imagination.

[–]unsafetomcat 0 points1 point ago

I saw the exact same response to a thread that instructed people to do that "onestop" thing on windows media player, it was the exact same story, "shit my dad's gonna be here in 10-15 minutes fuuuuuuuck help." obviously it could have just been a copycat, but you never know

[–]genericname01 0 points1 point ago

oh god, I've read this before and I still lol every time.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

The dude pretending to destroy his dad's computer is a pretty good troll.

[–]whateverdipshit 0 points1 point ago

OP is a newfreind.

[–]ethicks 0 points1 point ago

steven bonnell said it the best. "4chan is just trolls trolling trolls in a troll paradise".

Please explain to me why that kid would use his fathers work computer if he had access to another computer that would be presumably his? Falls flat right there. That and he was just feeding off things other users would say. They thought they were trolling him but in reality he was the master troll not even admitting to it after it was over.

[–]purplemaster_og 0 points1 point ago

if you play with fire, you're going to get /b/urned.

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 0 points1 point ago

[–]Releasethedreadknot 0 points1 point ago

are you unfamiliar with 4chan wordfilters?

[–]weaver2109 0 points1 point ago

So much fail and win wrapped up in one image, even if it is fake.

[–]meowcatlolz 0 points1 point ago

Trolls got trolled how was he posting all this to 4chan?

[–]iLuVtiffany[!] 0 points1 point ago

Just like students who copy shit out of wikipedia that's been edited by trolls. They never check other sources to see if the information that they're getting is correct.

I love trolls, and I love the idiots who fall for shit like this.

[–]FrownSyndrome 0 points1 point ago

This is painfully fake.

[–]dirty_fingers 0 points1 point ago

Why was he using his dad's precious computer in the first place if he had another computer handy to update 4 chan on his progress?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

He needed to use an application on that computer? It was better for watching porn on? Better speakers? Needed a bigger screen? So many reasons.

I personally sneak on to the family desktop when I'm visiting at home because my tiny laptop is useless for schlicking.

[–]dirty_fingers -5 points-4 points ago

If you belive it then you are gullible. Enjoy.

[–]YoSoyElCid -2 points-1 points ago

My thoughts exactly

[–]LNMagic -4 points-3 points ago

Magnets won't harm your hard drive. This is a myth based on old storage tech - floppy disks.

The only magnets powerful enough to scrub data from a drive platter are laboratory degaussers or those used by government agencies to wipe bits off media.

Think about it - the hard drive has magnets powerful enough so that about 12v can power it up to 7,200 RPM (some even at 10,000RPM). It's also fully encased by metal. That kid's hard drive is fine.

[–]AmaDaden 9 points10 points ago

The magnetism may not have done any damage but he said he opened it up and wiped the magnet across it. HDs are sensitive enough these days that would mechanically break it. That's why he said it was making a clicking sound.

[–]mscman 5 points6 points ago

Yes, PCWorld knows what they're talking about.... Except not.

You can still destroy a HDD with a magnet, just not a $0.99 magnet. There are fixed magnets in hard drives, but they don't move. If you induce larger magnetic fields across the disk, you can definitely destroy the data on the drives, or even worse, pull components in directions they weren't meant to move.

[–]Skynne 4 points5 points ago

That is the most utterly wrong thing I have ever seen.

[–]LNMagic 0 points1 point ago

I'm sick of the myth about magnets and modern computers. It's ridiculous. Read the fourth post on this page.

[–]Skynne -1 points0 points ago

I don't care how many posts you link, I have seen it happen. I know it can happen.

[–]nimanimal -1 points0 points ago

AutoCAD?

[–]ReeColi 1 point2 points ago

This comment is so full of fail. He could run a welding business, and use the computer to keep track of his fiscal stuff and/or client info. He could be an engineer and, like someone else already said, use autoCAD. Since when are welding and using a computer for work mutually exclusive.

[–]asnof -4 points-3 points ago

usb powered welding units....common doesnt everyone know about those

[–]RakoGumi -5 points-4 points ago
