"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Yeah, the N64 controller looked janky, but it worked amazingly well. Though I can't recall any games where I ever used the leftmost part...

Edit: SO MANY GAMES. Haha, I only had a few games for the N64, inherited it from my older cousin when he left for the Air Force.

Tony Hawk. It was too damn frustrating trying to manual or do a special trick with the analog stick, but the d-pad worked great.

Yes. For some reason I always gravitated toward the more acrobatic wrestlers...Ultimo Dragon, Ray Mysterio, THQ Man, etc.

And by some reason, I meant I'm Mexican.

But the stick was unbelievably crappy. After a while it would get all loose and barely recognize input.

This is what I don't get. You have different grips for different control setups which allows the N64 to do both 2D and 3D games really well.

[–]joshrice 1 point2 points ago

It worked well at first, but for any extended aggressive playing your joystick thumb would swell up, turn bright right and be really sore. After a while it would wear down and wouldn't return to center or not even register input anymore.

That's not something I've noticed on the PS3 controllers.

[–]lud1120 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I only remember using the D-Pad for Mischief Makers.
It was a must for a traditional platformer like that.

[–]Parthros 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If anyone is wondering why it had the D-Pad, it's because Nintendo was the first to use an analog stick since Atari, and they weren't sure if it would catch on, so they added the D-Pad in case games would need to use it instead. It's actually the best controller design until Playstation 1 came out.

[–]Stephaninator 283 points284 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The N64 controller was so weird because they were the first ones to have an analog controller as a standard, and they didn't know if it would catch on, so they needed the back-up of the d-pad.

[–]thetasigma1355 107 points108 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Get your logic out of here.

[–]loulan 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, I don't see what the issue is with having three grips, it doesn't matter that you only use two of them, and in my opinion, the N64 controller was the most ergonomic of all: not sure if it's the shape of my hands, but that's the one that feels the best IMO, because the grips are bigger.

[–]freedomweasel 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was ergonomic and fine until a game asked you to use the d-pad or left shoulder button. I don't remember that happening very often though.

[–]Magrippinho 70 points71 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, let's not forget Nintendo was the company that took the most risks with their controllers, the others mostly followed and reiterated.

For the N64, they knew they wanted an analogue stick somewhere, but where? Shouldn't it be just above the player's grip? That would be the most comfortable, right? But we shouldn't remove the d-pad altogether, it's what people know... So, let's design for two alternate grips depending on whether you'd be mostly using the d-pad or the analogue stick, and make sure to put a "shoulder" Z-button down there as well!

Sony figured the analogue stick worked pretty great, but the alternate grips looked confusing. So, keep the grip the same, hell, keep the whole controller design the same, it works, and just put the stick where your thumb would naturally reach. And, hey, there is room to mirror that for your right hand, let's add a second analogue stick too!

(And Microsoft is all, like, "DURR, BIGGER EQUALS BETTERER, LET'S MAKE OURS BIGGER THAN THE SUN!!!"

[–]Truck_Thunders 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think microsoft wins most comfortable controller though, fucking love the 360 controller.

[–]ScruffsMcGuff 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In my opinion the large Xbox controllers were one of my favourites, and the current 360 controller (d-pad issues aside) is the most comfortable.

If I play my PS3 for a long period of time I find my thumbs cramp up, and I've never been a fan of the placement of the analog stick on the Sony Controllers.

[–]brisures 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel exactly the same way. I used to love the dualshock when I was younger, but now I find that my hands are a bit too big for it. The 360 controller is perfect. For PS3 owners who are fans of the more comfortable 360 controller, it is actually possible to use it on your PS3. Just google "ps3 360 controller."

[–]Stingray88 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Indeed. N64 was the first handheld controller with analog "thumb" sticks. Before then the only analog sticks you saw were full size joy sticks.

This controller was the first to get it right IMO. Every controller has been modeled after this one.

I sometimes forget that this guy even existed... as I quickly replaced both of mine with Dual Analog and Dual Shock controllers.

[–]RepostsOnReposts 890 points891 points ago

To be honest the design of the N64 controller might look silly but it offers like 4 different layouts. There is so much room for activities!

How is it that every single one of my friends only had one "original" controller and then the only other controllers they had were abominations. I can still hear their stupid little voice "It's my house so I get the good controller."

[–]black27696 32 points33 points ago

Yeah, and you always had the friend that would eat snacks and then cover your controller in shit. You never knew which friend would do that, so fuck yeah they get the crappy one. I'm not giving you the keys to my goddamn lexus when I've never seen you fucking drive. Fuck off Travis, just because you had game systems before I did doesn't mean you get to fuck with my controller setup. And no, you can't be player one and choose the menus because it's my fucking game. You want to choose the options, go the fuck home.

I don't care if your mom hasn't come to get you yet, it's not that far of a fucking walk you little prick. Next time I'm not even giving you a capri sun because you always spill it and my mom yells at me for it AFTER you leave.

[–]sorepheet 27 points28 points ago

Nope. This piece of shit takes the cake. Stupid short 'nub' grips and fatter?! Ugh. If you had this controller and liked it, chances are you also played as Odd Job during multiplayer on Goldeneye too, cheater.

Yeah, and you get to do the same when they come to yours, unless your parents have the goose laying golden eggs and you could afford more than one good controller, in which case you should shut the fuck up and count your damn blessings--that kid's only good controller breaks and he has to madkatz it 24/7.

I hate that so many people have the mindset of "If you have a lot of game stuff, you're rich".

My parents were interested in games, as well as my brother and I. Four people interested in games.... that's where we spend our money. We almost never went out to eat, or went to the movies. We have literally never went on vacation (Well, we did when I was 2... but that was the last time). We spent all of our entertainment money on games.

So yes, I may have all of the new consoles, AND four good controllers for everyone to use. We're not rich. We just like games.

[–]meant2live218 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I miss the days when all of our controllers were made first-party. We had those all the way until the Gamecube, for which we breezed through about 4 Nintendo controllers, the Super Mario Sunshine edition controller, and 3 MadKatz controllers.

[–]lisabadcat 8 points9 points ago

Regardless of whether your statement is accurate, that is just wrong.

[–]remember_khitomer 31 points32 points ago

  • Left hand on stick, right hand on button pad. The most common layout.
  • Left hand on D-pad, right hand on button pad. Used by a few games.
  • Left hand on D-pad, right hand on stick. Not used by any games that I am aware of, but I am sure some clever redditor will fill me in.
  • Left hand supporting the middle section, right hand palm down over the stick rotating furiously (Mario Party position).
  • Left and right hands on button pad. This was required to get to one of the special levels in Star Fox iirc.

[–]Boibi 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Turok 64 used the left hand D-pad right hand analog stick method. At least this is how I played it. Using the C buttons for viewing in an FPS was stupid and hard.

[–]FuckinSherlockHolmes 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They designed it like that because they were unsure if the N64 would feature more 3D games or 2D side scrollers. So they added a D-Pad and a Stick so both can be used

[–]Ghash 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This makes a lot of sense. The analog joystick was a very very new addition back then that not everyone liked equally much.

[–]knudow 21 points22 points ago

It's the only controller that really has a gun trigger for FPS games. Using "shoulder" triggers for shooting is just weird.

[–]ZenDragon 72 points73 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand the problem everyone else has with the N64 controller looking weird either. It does have an uncomfortable joystick though and the thing wears out badly after a while.

[–]ImperfectLogic 70 points71 points ago

Wore out most likely from Mario Party. Broke the joystick and tore holes in your hand, but totally worth it.

[–]bugd 14 points15 points ago

My only problem with the N64 controller is that it was so unique that it makes porting those controls to another one for use with an emulator almost impossible.

[–]Toastcleaner 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The trick is to buy a usb adapter for your N64 pad, and then play the n64 emulator with your N64 pad and bask in the glory of it all. Provided you can get the emulator and your hardware to play nicely enough together that you get problem free, accurate emulation.

[–]Boingboingsplat 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most games either use the D-Pad or the Analog stick, so it's not that hard. I usually just map Z to the Left Shoulder button.

[–]EtanSivad 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That, and they lead that generation of consoles into including Analog sticks on every controller.

[–]Mikuro 44 points45 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. I can't believe people still say "lol you need three hands!!11!"

Obviously it's designed to use the control stick OR the crosspad, not both. Either way, it fits in your hands very comfortably. The PSX controller was (and all these years later, still is) much less comfortable. It's obvious that the analog sticks were an afterthought, and I'm really surprised Sony didn't redesign it with the PS2.

I think the N64 controller is the best I've ever used.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say the Xbox 360 controller is #1, followed very closely by the N64 one.

EDIT: And yes, the Playstation controllers suck. I love Playstation, but I don't love the controller.

[–]WolfDemon 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never been a fan of the dualshock design. l1l2/r1r2 always bothered me. it's even worse with dualshock 3. the way l2 pivots to mimic a trigger is horrible and feels awkward to use. I'm also slightly disappointed in the xbox controller design. I think its counter intuitive to have the secondary button above the trigger. some find it easy to use but I believe it would be much easier if they had it underneath where your middle finger can hit it. as a gun user I will never use my middle finger on a trigger unless I loss my finger.

[–]TheCrudMan 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Mikuro 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I still think it was the best. The octagonal hole was a great idea, and it was comfortable for me. (Exception: Mario Party blisters.) The PSX sticks always wind up slipping from sweat, and they're too short.

[–]TheCrudMan 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never used the sticks on the PSX, they were pretty lousy, not enough resistance. Always used the D-Pad. Still I would've preferred to use the D-Pad for more stuff on the N64 but you couldn't. The surface area on the top of that stick was too small and hurt my fingers pretty quickly...

[–]killabeezio 19 points20 points ago

This is the best controller ever made. A lot of design thought went into this. This wasn't made for "three hands", it was made to be used with either the Dpad or Analog stick. So you still just need 2 hands.

Then xbox came along and was like hey lets put both the Dpad and Analog stick close together, you can still use either or, plus the top bumpers or even use them both at the same time. but this all came from the N64 controller.

[–]richmondody 23 points24 points ago

Yes. It's Gray and filled out the part between the c-stick and d-pad.

The Xbox 360 controller comes close. Interesting how the two most comfortable controllers both have incredibly shitty D-Pads.

Not very relevant any more, but I bought the PS2 especially for the great D-Pad for THPS3

[–]Mikuro 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Somehow I never liked the PSX D-pad. The gap between the buttons made it harder to simply lean your thumb. It was almost like 4 different buttons.

It's weird, but I think the D-pad is steadily devolved since the NES. Even Nintendo forgot how to make 'em.

[–]Woogity 2 points3 points ago

The shape was great. I didn't like the face button placement, the triggers are too imprecise to press down fully, the d-pad is too small, and the z button is placed awkwardly.

After playing SSBM and SSBB for many years I've come to the conclusion that the gamecube controller was the best controller of its time and the xbox360 controller completely ripped it off and that's why I like the xbox360 controller so much.

[–]TheCrudMan 42 points43 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ripped it off? The Xbox and Gamecube came out pretty much the same time and the 360 controller is a pretty natural progression of the Xbox controller. If anything it totally ripped off the Dreamcast controller. I mean, just look at them. Triggers, stick placement (dreamcast had 1 but a big space begging for one), face button colors (scrambled but the same, and nearly identical placements, etc). Memory card slots on top of the controller. Oh yeah and the plugs that go into the console are very similar. Gamecube kind of had this too.

[–]Luminoth 55 points56 points ago

It's sad to me that more people don't realize the Xbox controller is an updated Dreamcast controller.

[–]xnerdyxrealistx 21 points22 points ago

Dreamcast was a great system, but sadly its mostly forgotten by the gaming industry.

Which itself has a very similar layout to the original Saturn 3D controller that come out with Nights into Dreams.

[–]BobisOnlyBob 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sock Master's Video Game Controller Family Tree explains all. The original Xbox controller ("Duke") was a natural successor to the Dreamcast, but the Controller S, the direct model for the 360 controller, borrowed a fair bit from the PS2 DualShock.

[–]xnerdyxrealistx 9 points10 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you remember the original xbox controller? It looked nothing like the 360 controller, was horribly bulky, and was probably the worst controller I've ever used. I can agree that the dreamcast controller was the first controller of that kind though. The real progression was dreamcast -> gamecube -> 360

[–]Tont_Voles 3 points4 points ago

You forget the S-pad. I dunno if that came out before or after the GC though.

[–]TheCrudMan 5 points6 points ago*

Ummm Dreamcast--->Xbox--->Xbox S---->360.

The 360 pad is very close to the controller S in terms of how it feels and operates.

I'm gathering that the GC controller seems to be popular amongst a bunch of people; for me, I struggled with it, especially coming from the N64 pad which I had loved from the moment I played with it (before I'd tried it, I thought it would be weird and stupid). My specific difficulties with the GC controller were after having grown up with master system/nes, then megadrive/snes, then ps1 and N64 all having button layouts featuring a 'square' when it came to button layouts, the GC buttons on the right felt a bit 'all over the place' to my brain. I also kept wondering which grey button was x and y (I still can't remember). Oh, and the Dreamcast pad, that was the same layout wise with the 'square' of buttons.

Given that, I wonder if those who liked the GC controller perhaps had different past experience with other pads, or maybe didn't use pads as much in general (so didn't get used to the more standard layouts). Anyone willing to shed some light on this?

As a side-note, my favourite pad ever is the 360 pad, at least if we ignore the poor quality of the dpad.

[–]Dark21 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I felt the same way until I played Dave Mirra freestyle BMX. It could rely pretty heavily on the 'Y' button for grinds, and once I started using the button a lot it began to feel really natural. I just basically had to overwrite the idea in my mind where I clumped 'X' and 'Y' into "all those gray buttons up there".

[–]saremei 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I grew up with Atari 2600 and all the other consoles you mentioned and personally I loved the GC controller. Best of that generation. I had absolutely no issues with the button layout not being square. That said I still think the N64 controller is easily one of if not the best controller Nintendo (or any console for that matter) has ever had.

[–]Sunset_Bleach 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I started gaming on NES and loved the GameCube controller, mostly for how it felt. It fit in my hands far better than any other controller, but I didn't like the how the buttons weren't always responsive and I didn't like the C-stick.

I agree that the 360 has the best controller on the market (again, ignoring the dpad). The stick and button layout is perfect for shooters, having the left stick higher up so you can more easily hold the stick down for longer periods without getting tired and the right stick is further down for precision. Also having bumpers is great for layouts like Bumper Jumper on Halo.

NES controller user friendly my ARSE. it's a RECTANGLE! it destroyed my tiny hands!

[–]meohmy13 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's one of the worst controllers ever designed. This thing says "Doesn't get more user friendly" and "Suck it Atari" as if two action buttons and a d-pad thoughtlessly stuck on a block was somehow less user-friendly than a single control stick and a single action button. If the buttons on the NES controller were on arranged vertically on the reverse it would have been OK (not great). Otherwise, the d-pad is far inferior to a stick and the button arrangement required you to either work both buttons with your one thumb or contort your wrist around uncomfortably to use two fingers, either way it sucks.

And then you remember that the Epyx 500XJ was available for Atari (and PC and C64, etc) at this time and was far easier to use. As long as you preferred right-hand control of the stick this was one of the best controllers ever devised. NES's was one of the worst.

I liek this picture, but I never understood the gamecube complaints. "OH NOES! EIGHT BUTENS AND A DEE PAD!" Because It's not like the xbox/360 and ps2/3 controllers have...exactly that. ಠ_ಠ

[–]Cayou 15 points16 points ago

I think the right thumb buttons make more sense. Big green, smaller red, two grays... less confusing than the "identical buttons arranged in a symmetrical pattern" that you get with the PlayStation and XBox controllers.

[–]hostergaard 25 points26 points ago*

What? The 64 controller was the best of them all. Ergonomic design and multiple configurations. Its only weakness IMHO was that the analog stick did not take too much abuse before it became loose. Still works tough. Just like your moms vagina.

If you believe you need three hands you do not understand the previous argument.

It had just the right amount of buttons that offers flexibility while not being confusing. And it had a port for ad-on. That was pretty revolutionary at the time and allowed them to experiment with different things, like rumble packs that became popular.

The N64 is probably one of the most important controllers out there.

[–]its_your_their 1 point2 points ago

This is why I love Sony's controller. It's stayed same pretty much for all three systems. I love the design and the joysticks are imo the best from all 3 companies. Also, I was a fan of the fact I could use my PSX controllers for my PS2.

Never was too keen on the N64 or GC controllers although the NES and SNES controllers are timeless.

Not sure why the gamecube controller counts as "exhausting the limits of button cramming." The Xbox 360 controller is very similar, and actually has 1 more button than the GC controller.

I disagree with the GC controller being "button crammed". Imo, the gamecube controller makes more sense and is easier to memorize than the Xbox and PS3 controllers.

[–]theslyder 1 point2 points ago

People keep making the "three hands" joke, I'm sure they aren't so stupid that they genuinely believe that it was designed to have the analog stick, d-pad, and face buttons all used at once. It's it's fucking annoying.

Feigning stupidity just makes you look dumb. Even if your audience understands that you're feigning stupidity, why would you want to? If you have a complaint, articulate it.

[–]Tarandon 1 point2 points ago

Evolution of good controllers that actually followed the same design principles were

NES --> SNES --> Ps1 -->ps2 --> ps3 --> Wii classic controller pro

As you can see Nintendo found that they actually started a logical design on a controller and then failed while Sony worked on their original design.

NES: Simple and effective. D-pad use caused excessive bleeding and calluses on the thumb joint area. That still persist to this day

SNES: Smoother NES controller with rounded edges and more buttons. Win

PS1-3: Improved design for comfort and less hand stress. Also added analogue function.

TIL that the PAL SNES controller used multicolored buttons instead of the light purple/dark purple scheme of the US version.

Can anyone confirm whether the PAL version used the concave/convex button scheme the way the US version did? That was absolute genius. I was explaining it to my 60-year-old, never-played-a-video-game-in-her-life mother just the other day, and even she saw the value.

why the fuck is it talking about button cramming with the GC controller? playstation had 9 buttons (if we're gonna count select and start), two sticks and a D-pad ever since it realized sticks were important. GC was nintendo's take on the playstation controller, IMO.
