This was a much better comparison I think. It was hard to get a proper idea of the related sizes of planets/stars in the main picture of this thread.

However, this gif moved WAY too god damned fast. Does anyone have just each part of this gif conveniently copy/pasted into one awesome picture?

Edit1 - Here's a decent one I just found using google of the sun compared to other stars; It's FAR better than original thread picture or this gif in giving a proper representation and giving people the time to take it all in: http://static.pmylund.com/blog/content/2010/07/sun_is_a_pixel.jpg

I reccomend viewing the above image at maximum size and then side scrolling to the right to get a true, "HOLY SHIT!" moment.

Edit2 - Here's a good youtube video of size comparisons which gives the viewer an adequate amount of time to take in the epic proportions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEheh1BH34Q

I bought this poster a while back.

I scaled it to the size of an 8.5inx11in piece of paper and then computed my height at that scale.

I discovered that my scaled height was something like 2.0x10-23 cm. An electron (classical assumption of 10-13 cm) would be more than a billion times larger.

I keep it posted on my wall to remind myself of my insignificance.

[–]Engineer3227 3 points4 points ago

That's what I loved about! By about the 3rd star from the right I was thinking, "Holy shit! Wtf is going on here!? This can't be.... no... NO... NO!!!!!". But by then it was too late and my entire monitor had been swallowed up by a massive star.

Also, 23" monitor and last 3 stars really did take up the entire screen.

Are those real photos? How did they manage to take so detailed photos of those stars?

[–]Engineer3227 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They can determine the size of and composition of gases and matter of stars through the light they emit. They then use that data to construct pictures of what they believe they would look like. The representations are pretty accurate.

So the basic answer to your question is no, they are not real photos. They are pictures rendered using data that has been collected on the stars.

It has a 0% or 100% chance, depending on whether or not it will happen. Hope that helped.

[–]souleh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If we assume you've got maybe 60 years left to live:

100,000 (See Owyheemud's comment below) / 60 = ~1,667

100 / 1,667 = approx. 0.06% chance of it happening within your remaining 60 years alive (if we assume it's entirely random when in that 100k year window it will happen, and that it isn't more likely towards the end, which I have for the sake of simplicity and bad maths skills)

Things like this are so hard to comprehend and really makes you wonder at the magnificence of the universe... on another note Buuurn

[–]MonotonousMan 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not even sure it's possible to imagine how big the universe is, or something like the Sun. I mean, in my head I can imagine what a mile looks like. I can imagine what 1200 miles feels like driving mainly 70mph for 16 hours straight.

But when I try to imagine and comprehend the vastness of space, the size of stars and galaxies... It is just indescribable the way I feel. It's like I feel my brain quiver when it tries to picture a "universe". Just absolutely amazing to consider how insane it is that anything exists at all. Being the product of ~14 billion years of events.

Can someone smarter then me comment on this? It seems reasonable to say that to those tiny tiny things on the small scale, as a human being I am a galaxy to it (in proportionate scale to what I as a human is to our galaxy).

[–]0_o 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those tiny things on the small scale are mostly immeasurable or theoretical and immeasurable, so I'm going to take those "tiny tiny things" to mean things we are fairly confident to actually exist.

You 100 are bigger than an neutron 10-15 by roughly the same amount that a *nebula 1015 is bigger than you. (Nebula are clouds of gas within a galaxy where stars are formed).

Scaling a person down to the size of a neutron would put a nebula at the size of an unscaled person. Galaxies 1021 would be about a million times bigger at the size of Texas 106. The Sun 109 would be the size of a single bacteria 10-6. The largest known star 1012 would be the size of a single grain of salt 10-3. You truly are not comparable to a galaxy the same way that those small things are comparable to you. Galaxies are much much bigger.

So to all the ents out there who see circles on the small scale and circles on the big scale and start to wonder if things are recursive... no.

Just a pet peeve of mine but why do most people refer to our star as the "sun" when it has a proper name, Sol? Every star is a sun... actually, people do this all the time with "god" too, the judeo-christian God has a name, Jehovah... so why doesn't anyone who is Christian or Jewish actually use the proper name instead of something generic? Anyway, random but interesting...

That outline is almost the exact shape of my mom. Except my mom's a little shorter.

TIL there is a star believed to be only a quarter of the age of the earth. And it has a kickbottom name.

This image [mothers aside] always seemed a bit misleading to me. The giant stars the image references are quite rare. In fact, our regular ol' sun is a pretty regular ol' star. What is more impressive, however, is comparing earth to our sun to our galaxy to our cluster, to the estimated size of the universe, to the estimated size of your mom. Just my opinion here.

[–]vampirefreak135 0 points1 point ago

Actually looked up and did the math for you lazy people, i thought Betelgeuse was the largest supergiant, turns out VV Cephei A is over 4 times larger then Betelgeuse and can hold approx 2,200 of our suns inside it

I was looking at the picture and it started to get more and more intense. The celestial bodies seemed to exist in unimaginable sizes. As I examined the examples, they became so amazing, so wondrous! And there it was.... your mother. The biggest celestial body of them all.

Given what we may or may not know about the heat production of some of those larger stars, does anyone here have any idea how far away you'd have to be from some of the biggest stars (say, cat 6 in this image) to not be incinerated?

What is the equivalent Earth-like zone of sanity if it were possible to have a couple of non-gas planets whizzing around these things?
