Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

Oh god, this game... I put so many hours into it, somehow was able to progress all the way to (what I assumed was) the end of the 4th disc but couldn't beat the last boss... not long after, I moved, lost the game in my moving boxes, found it in a box of stuff about 4 months later... 2 of the discs missing, one cracked in half, and the 4th, the only one "intact", completely scratched to oblivion and unreadable. Still have the save sitting on my freaking ps1 memory card, and every time I see the save file, I consider buying it on ebay or something, but never have the money.

[–]kissmycountryass 3 points4 points ago

Do you want a copy of the game?

[–]Zeonhart 0 points1 point ago

Dunno if I could bring it in myself to dig out my ps2 again, but given the amount of things to do in this one-horse town, I'd probably play through the entire thing again, so yes.

[–]kissmycountryass 0 points1 point ago

I was just curious if you were begging for the game or not to be honest.

[–]Zeonhart 0 points1 point ago

Lol, I wouldn't beg for a game. Just expressing my love for a classic. I can't possibly see myself ever going out of my way to get another copy past finding a good deal on ebay.

[–]MLRSguy 0 points1 point ago

I have this game sitting in a box right now, and I don't have any Sony devices at all. I beat the game a long time ago, and the ending is truly worth it. All you have to do is say the word.

[–]Zeonhart 0 points1 point ago

It's hard for me to say if I'd take anything for free. I'm not one to anticipate handouts, as much as my original post supposedly inadvertently conveyed that message. I appreciate the gesture though.

[–]MLRSguy 0 points1 point ago

Oh no the original post did not convey that message at all lol. I'm just trying to be nice :) If you don't want it for free, I would recomend picking it up at some point. The game conveys a major sense of closure in the end, and it's extremely rewarding especially considering all the work you put into it. A great ending to a great game.

[–]Zeonhart 0 points1 point ago

You're making me want to play it even more... If you have no use for your copy, I'd be willing to take you up on your offer. I'd definitely start from scratch though, I've forgotten most of the storyline (I played through it roughly 10 or so years ago). I have a few games I could trade as compensation, if you want.

[–]Forever_Awkward 0 points1 point ago

What a scumbag, begging by being super humble and not begging.

[–]Flobblem 0 points1 point ago

What kind of game is this?

[–]mypetridish 0 points1 point ago

Just cheat. I cant bear the difficult combos so I just had a cheat to have them run automatically. I want to go through the exciting stories, so I think it was ok. Plus I am old so my reflex cant keep up with the combos...

[–]CosmicBard 1 point2 points ago

Okay, I'll fucking bite.

This game gets more rave reviews than a Zelda title and now I want to know why.

Just a bit of background, I've been playing JRPGs for about twenty years now, from the fourth-console gen to today.

I remember being inundated with TV commercials, bus banners and so forth for this thing. I took all that as a sign that it was a commercial gimmick not meant for 'hardcore JRPG fans such as myself'. I didn't even know that it was a JRPG until about a year afterwards. The fact that it was made by SCEI, a company without a reputation for making them, didn't help.

So, what makes this game so special?

[–]Jeffhole 0 points1 point ago

For me, the world that this game was set in is just unreal. I wanted to live there. You hear that, mom and dad!?

[–]CosmicBard 0 points1 point ago

So, just the setting? Nothing redeeming gameplay wise?

[–]Jeffhole 0 points1 point ago

It's been a LONG time since I've played it. After all the years, that's the one thing I can remember well enough. Hopefully some of these folks who've played it in recent years can chime in for you.

[–]themoray42[S] 0 points1 point ago

I personally enjoy the "addition" aspect of your attacks, where sucessful pressing of the x and circle buttons would deal more damage to your enemy. It makes the fighting part of the game a little more active rather than just "wait for turn, press x, wait again."

[–]CosmicBard 0 points1 point ago

How exactly is that implemented? Are we talking something like Paper Mario? Because I might be into that.

[–]themoray42[S] 0 points1 point ago

Well, depending on the type of addition (example, main character has Double Slash and Volcano around the beginning) a command stating to press the x button at a certain moment will appear. Once pressed, another will commence shortly untill the attack is over (Double Slash has 1,(simple but less damage) and Volcano has 3 (more complex but stronger)). If pressed early, sometimes the next command will ask to press the circle, and if you do not, the enemy counters and you take damage as well

[–]Zeonhart 0 points1 point ago

It's quite a lot like Paper Mario, a bit more complex on timing and such but it flows very nicely. Completing a full combo gives you a great sense of accomplishment, but it doesn't punish you a great deal for missing a single press.

[–]Jrex13 1 point2 points ago

I actually have been playing this little gem again! For about a week now. It's amazing how much I had forgotten about this game!

[–]sudo_fu 1 point2 points ago

best game i have ever fucking played, only possible tie being metal gear solid

[–]Joseph_Valdez 1 point2 points ago

Lately this game has been getting allot of attention on reddit; more so than usual, this is good because this game deserves every bit of it. Still my favorite game of all time.

[–]RepostsOnReposts 1 point2 points ago

If ever there was an under-appreciated game that deserves a sequel, this is it.

[–]Aeringunnr 2 points3 points ago

Hide! The nostalgia nazis are coming!

[–]Zennxr 0 points1 point ago

I was about to same the same thing!

[–]KniFeseDGe 1 point2 points ago

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

[–]ContstantExcuses 1 point2 points ago

You sir truely know great gaming! I wish I could upvote you more! Freaking loved this game always hoped for a remake or a game with a similar action element! Still one of my absolute favorite games even though I'll probably never play it again. (Unless PS4 lets us play ps1 games)

[–]aleczjp 1 point2 points ago

This is my favorite RPG ever.

[–]ElectricFirex 1 point2 points ago

WHY REDDIT! WHYYYYY! WHY CAN I ONLY GIVE ONE UPVOTE!!?!

[–]Wolf107 0 points1 point ago

I remeber me and my friend would watch his older brother play this till like 4am.

[–]Jeffhole 0 points1 point ago

I remember beating this game multiple times, and I never owned the damn thing! I just rented it over and over and over. Sometimes late at night I surf ebay and think about forking over the cash. I never do, though. To this day I feel empty.

[–]Bloodyfart 0 points1 point ago

Ah, the weekly legend of dragoon post, just in time too, I was getting scared for a moment.

[–]fr0zen0ne 0 points1 point ago

This game has always been awesome, but whenever I played it it always froze after Lenus 2 & Regule. So I've never gone farther than that. I love using Albert.

[–]jakirotb 0 points1 point ago

Did anyone ever run with the useless archer? Played through the game 3.5 times never using shana/miranda and hardly ever using meru and haschel.

[–]themoray42[S] 0 points1 point ago

No, Shana/Miranda is useless. Always stick with Kongol and Albert(Switched Kongol sometimes with Rose and Haschel.)

[–]Zeonhart 0 points1 point ago

I always had kongol and haschel. Haschel with that gear that restores hp every round, forgot what it was called but it basically made him invincible.

[–]mcmur 0 points1 point ago

classic game back in the heyday of Japanese RPGs. Sadly the genre has fallen from grace these days.

[–]DarkReaper94 0 points1 point ago

BURNINGGG RUSH!

[–]FluffeeDream 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit, I played this game when I was younger And then I couldn't remember what it was called. But now..

[–]StapleNinja 0 points1 point ago

shit yeah.

thats my childhood on 4 discs.

[–]richardco 0 points1 point ago

The localization in this game is pretty shit. Still had fun with it.

[–]buster_casey 0 points1 point ago

have been a reddit lurker for about 2 weeks now. Had to sign up purely to post about this game. One of my all time favorites. The addition system really made it such a fun rpg as it kept the pace really fast. actually I just dug this buddy up a few months ago and played through it on medium. Need to do another play through on hard.

[–]El_Zorro09 0 points1 point ago

MADDDDNESSS, HEROOOOOOO!

Anyway, great game. Feels underrated somehow, since most of the PS1 rpg yabber is filled with Square stuff.

I used to have a separate save file just before you got the cinematic where it shows the battle of the old dragoons fighting the things that I can't remember what they are called just so I could watch it whenever I wanted. Very sad, but also very cool.

[–]Aenin 0 points1 point ago

I was playing this then I saw the Baldur's Gate thing happen and started playing that instead....

[–]elgimpy 0 points1 point ago

I bought that, metal gear solid and final fantasy nine at a retro game shop......so much nostalgia....so little time

[–]shasta0masta 0 points1 point ago

OMG Such a good game, Man I used to play that game for ever with my best friend. Hes dead now tho =/

[–]n8wolf 0 points1 point ago

8 discs later...

[–]Kalsembar 0 points1 point ago

Can anything match the feeling of finally pulling off "Gust of Wind Dance" for the first time??

[–]Otter_Slaughter 0 points1 point ago

I actually just picked up a copy of this a few weeks ago; debating on whether to play it or replay FFVII over break.

[–]ActionFlank 2 points3 points ago

Grandia.

[–]xLUONGBRO 1 point2 points ago

Thumbs, actually my copy of Grandia 2 for DC just came in the mail a couple days ago. Been playing through it the past few days

[–]reignb 0 points1 point ago

Same, I always debate starting LoD, FFVII, or Xenogears (which sadly enough gets no love on reddit (._. )\

[–]docxcallahan 0 points1 point ago

Xenogears is BOSS Sawce. Plan on playing it soon again on Emulator. damn, I have never been past the beginning of the 2nd disc, but the story is amazing, and the combat system is pretty slick.

[–]KniFeseDGe 0 points1 point ago

DO IT!!

[–]Kazzerscout 0 points1 point ago

I really want a copy of this (I rented it 4 times when I was younger, one for each disc) but it's so expensive now!

[–]Joseph_Valdez 0 points1 point ago

Getting a copy isn't that hard; they used to go for like 12 bucks for a new copy but now they're slightly more expensive BUT still easy to buy. My advice is to check on eBay because people sell them not knowing exactly what they have.

Thats how I got most of my collection

[–]Volatyle 0 points1 point ago

About to replay it for my 6th time. Can never, and will never get bored of it. Here I come Faust!
