Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

OP is too scared to say this isn't their rabbit and that they just wanted karma.

Right when I joined Reddit I saw a picture of a cute rabbit being bathed and everyone in the comments yelled at OP for it

Uh, don't do that. They'll die. Seriously they'll die from shock... rabbits don't need baths.

[–]hillgod 6 points7 points ago

I'm pretty damn suspect of this. My pet rabbit lived over ten years and was given baths regularly. I had never read this in any of the rabbit books I read (my parents made me in exchange for said rabbit). In addition, one of my friend's family actually raised rabbits (the only person I ever knew with Rabbit Raising Merit Badge in Boy Scouts), and they never mentioned any of this either.

I only recently heard about this recently on Reddit.

[–]oldhousesaver 0 points1 point ago

I also gave my bunny regular baths too and she never died from a bath. What did your friend do for a Rabbit Raising Merit Badge? That doesn't sound good since they don't love their rabbits, and rabbit raisers do horrible things to their bunnies.

[–]hillgod 0 points1 point ago

It's not even an official merit badge these days, so I honestly have no idea.

[–]ortucis 0 points1 point ago

Know this, your rabbits died a little inside everytime you gave them a bath. They endured and in enduring they grew stronger.

Im not trying to be an ass here... but what do rabbits do when it rains?

[–]MalHeartsNutmeg 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not the water, it's the act of you putting them in water which scares them. They can have a heart attack.

It happens with small prey animals.

[–]ruddelsticks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have heard this, but I spent far too many hours when I was young just chasing wild rabbits. Why didn't they die from heart attacks?

[–]MalHeartsNutmeg 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm no professional but I imagine you chased them in the field? They had an escape route and you weren't really close or ever likely to catch them.

Holding onto a rabbit and placing it in water can be extremely stressful.

[–]ruddelsticks -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I lived in a townhouse, so mostly in small common areas between the backyards, but I came very close to catching them several times. I probably could have, I just was nervous because a rabbit bit a friend of mine a long time ago and I didn't want the same thing to happen to me. Don't judge me, I was like 6 or 7 years old.

[–]MalHeartsNutmeg 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

More so than the bites, wild rabbits carry a few diseases so it's best if you not get too close. Depending on the country too - for example in Australia on top of the regular diseases they carry, there was an additional disease released into the population to kill them off but they became immune and I believe still carry it? You'll have to hit up Google for the facts.

[–]isVB -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually I think it's because their fur is completely soaked through. It's too difficult for them to produce enough body heat to properly dry their fur and to keep themselves warm.

[–]rmdfoxy11 -5 points-4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess there is such a thing called being scared to death lol

[–]isVB -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's different, I think. The rain only hits their top coat while a bath soaks all their fur.

[–]hillgod 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a book on caring for a pet rabbit that my parents made me get and read in return for getting the rabbit, and there is no mention of this. In fact, I don't even think it's common knowledge.

While after reading this not too long ago we've stopped bathing our rabbit, he went 10 years with baths with seemingly no problem.

[–]SoCalWingFan 0 points1 point ago

No, you likely killed him and your parents tricked you into taking care of a zombie rabbit that looked exactly like the first one that you killed in the bath. I bet that book made no mention of zombie rabbits either, did it? DID IT?!

[–]housnap 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have bathed my rabbit before and it did not die (years ago, rabbit is no more due to age). Is this an urban myth? I mean it's not like I was soaking it in cold water and hanging her out on the rack to dry.

[–]sniff3000 -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

looking at this pic i thought to myself. "i thought rabbits cant get wet." and looking at this comment, yep i was right.

[–]oldhousesaver -1 points0 points ago

Over 15 years ago I had a bunny who attracted fleas even though she was an indoor rabbit and never went outside unless she was in my arms. We did not have Advantage or Revolution back then. I had to bathe her many times in order to kill the fleas. I washed everything but her head, and then towelled her off as thoroughly as I could. She would groom herself dry. Bathing never killed her.

[–]jackchange 46 points47 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Rabbits cannot cough/vomit... Meaning that if it were to inhale any amount of water, it could not cough it up and would die. Do not bathe rabbits.

[–]Rhysode 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honest question here; how do they not all die in heavy rain storms?

[–]KFCatz 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unlike chickens, I don't think rabbits are interested enough to stare straight up.

[–]AlSpeer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They do (when their burrows flood), it's why wet winters mean less rabbit hunting for me.

[–]sihnon 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They can't cough or vomit? I've never owned a rabbit so this is a TIL for me. I'm curious, how come?

[–]Pajamas_ 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Vomiting can happen in rabbits, its just extremely rare and likely the result of a life-threatening medical issue. Coughing on the other hand is a little more common.

In laymen's terms; they just do not have the physiology to support food or objects moving in the opposite direction - strong valves and all.

[–]TheSacredParsnip 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If a lagomorph coughs then it probably means it's dying. But, rats have the same issue with vomiting and they should be bathed on a regular basis. I don't think drowning is as big an issue as jackchange makes it out to be. The shock stuff sounds legit, but it sounds like the owner took care to make sure this didn't happen.

Info on rodent vomiting.

[–]petedawes 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everyone is saying no baths for rabbits. I have a healthy rabbit that we occasionally give baths to and have done so for years. She is fine. They can get wet. Don't be an idiot and drown them and it's fine. Maybe a cage rabbit will go into shock but if you keep your rabbit locked up in a cage at al times anything can send it into shock when you finally take it out.

[–]narwhalsareawesome 2 points3 points ago

Trying to upvote you out of your fucking ditch. God, Reddit hops on quite the bandwagon, and it doesn't stop.

[–]adhoc_lobster 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dangerous or not it is totally unnecessary especially if you have a free roaming rabbit. Rabbits are extremely clean animals and the only way they should ever need a bath is if they are so ill they are unable to bathe themselves or they are living in total squalor. And even if you do need to clean them, it is totally unnecessary to get them that wet. You're just asking for a rabbit with hypothermia.

[–]phleg -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

just because you haven't had adverse reactions doesn't mean it's a good thing to do.

[–]petedawes -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

pretty sure it does. As I said, don't be an idiot about it. Make sure the water is a reasonable temperature and shallow enough so she is just wading in it and it is fine.

[–]idontgetitwhat 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

well you're just lucky your rabbit hasn't had any reactions or anything. It still isn't something you should do unless it absolutely needs it. They can clean themselves you know...

[–]petedawes -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Again, not lucky. just a responsible pet owner who has had a healthy rabbit for seven years and has always given her baths when necessary.

They key is she has always been a free range rabbit with a litter box. If you are one of those cruel people who keeps their rabbit in its cage the majority of the time then yes, it will probably never get dirty enough to warrant a bath, and yes the shock of being taken out of the tiny space where it has spent literally its entire life and submerging it in water will probably cause it to go into shock.

[–]idontgetitwhat 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You just make it seem like its okay to give rabbits a bath because you were successful with it. Thats why I spoke up, but then you explained yourself better.

[–]JCelsius -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. It's like someone saying "I've driven drunk dozens of times and nothing bad ever happened. I don't know why everyone acts like it's some big deal."

[–]cac2976 1 point2 points ago

I suppose. If you plan on doing it for the cute and the karma, please stop while you're ahead.

It will likely never be necessary for your rabbit to be given a bath if you keep its environment clean. They are self grooming much like cats. They got it under control.

[–]Daimones 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you look around someone has posted a Lin that OP of this image (not the reporter) very much knew what he was doing and took cautions.

[–]cac2976 0 points1 point ago

That's good news! I never remember reposts on reddit. I only had the intent of making it known that this is not something you do when you're bored and want to see something cute. It seems other people had the same concern. I Didn't mean to be a debbie downer about the cuteness or anything! It'd break my heart to hear if someone did this and something went wrong.

[–]TheSacredParsnip 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Rabbits can have issues with diarrhea and other ailments that can be remedied through bathing their backsides. If you actually have experience with rabbits and can be responsible when bathing them, then it can be done safely.

Perform a search prior to uploading to make sure you're not reposting. Its reddiquette. If you're going to be a redditor, learn to do it right. Everyone benefits.

[–]Smorgo22 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People need to stop treating Reddit like its some gay little club, hundreds of thousands of people use it, its really no different that upvoting a youtube video or comment, and if you really think it is, cop the fuck on.

[–]Radico87 -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Where is the implication that I think reddit is a secret little club in my statement? Oh, that's right, there isn't.

If you enjoy mediocrity and inanity, I pity you friend.

If you're too incompetent to read and apply a basic rule within a subreddit, then I still pity you.

If you think that veracity is dependent on scale, then I really pity you.

[–]Smorgo22 -1 points0 points ago*

Think this guy deserves a nice, old fashioned slow clap for this stellar response, well done Sir., you're that one step closer to winning the internet. RELAX. Oh and, "If you're going to be a redditor, learn to do it right." There we go, implication that you think reddit is a secret little club. Boom. And you used the word reddiquette. Enough said.

[–]Radico87 -1 points0 points ago

Your grasp on logic and reasoning is quite loose if you've leaped to the assumption I consider this a secret little club by advocating following its rules.

Oh, I suppose society itself is a secret little club because we follow its rules and don't for example go around killing one another on whims. Or the secret driver's club because we stop at red lights!

Reddiquette is etiquette in the context of reddit.

Imbecile.

[–]Smorgo22 0 points1 point ago

Again, lets give this fellow a nice long slow clap for his fantastic, well-worded response. But lets let the people speak on this, more obviously agree with my view on the issue than your pretentious, albeit beautifully written standing on the matter. Bravo.

[–]Radico87 -1 points0 points ago

FYI, because a group of people agree on something doesn't make it correct. Unless of course, the earth is flat.

well, I suppose you see your argument holds no water and you have to rely on people who don't know any better. Oh well, have fun with that. I'm done with you.

Cheers!
