I'm Australian too, and I used to get this one all the time when I was in school here in America. I eventually learned to just reply, "Yep, and you came from people that used to buy and sell slaves! Hey, Edgar, this guy thinks you should still be a slave!"

Of course, this resulted in a lot of counter-anger (not from Edgar, I was friendly with him). One time, it resulted in a school-wide meeting, because the kid went hold and told his parents about it ... and it turns out that his parents had recently paid reparations to a black lineage! (this was 1996) When they told us in the assembly that that' s what the assembly was about, I almost died laughing.
