I used to get ingrown toenails when I was younger, and I definitely recommend the surgery. It's quick, done in an office, and you'll never have to deal with blood filled shoes ever again.

what is ingrown toenail?

It's when your toenail, usually the big toe, grows out too far on the side. It causes it to put pressure on your skin, and it gets really inflamed. Your toe gets infected and bl It can be incredibly painful, especially if someone were to step on your foot.

I almost went this route but I was successful with an alternative method recommended by my physician. What I did was clean the area really well every morning and every night, then ball up a small piece of cotton and gently wedge it under the ingrown side of my toenail. Of course I put some sort of ingrown toenail medicine on the cotton. This "trained" my toenail to grow the way that it is supposed to grow. It also offered temporary relief by lifting that pointy edge just a little bit.

Once the toenail lifted enough for me to trim it, I snipped the edges off that were puncturing my skin.

Don't forget to remove and replace the cotton though unless you want a nastier infection that you might already have.

Actually, steve-d's suggestion would probably be the best for you. Once and done. I was just a pansy.

I had chronic ingrown toenails through junior high. Even with trying to train my nails to grow the right way, it was a constant battle so the surgery wasthe best option.

The surgery was kind of painful, but the next day I felt amazing.

I just hated if someone would step on my toe and I'd just sigh thinking "well my sock is soaked with blood now".

Oh man. So both toes were ingrown? Was it a particular side or both sides? I had one side on each toe that was most prone to becoming ingrown for some reason. I sort of understand where you are coming from and why you went with the surgery now. I felt like I had it pretty bad so I can't even imagine the condition reaching chronic status.

Both toes, both sides. It was awful. My siblings had the same problem too. Thanks a lot, genetics!
