No, some places put an X on people's hands at the door if they are under 21 so they won't be able to order anything at the bar. If you don't have an X on your hand you are assumed to be at least 21 by the bartenders (verified at the door when you entered) and you can order booze.

actually, thinking back, I've seen this in multiple places. Like, at shows, when people decide to go crowdsurfing and make it to the front, security draws an x on one of their hands so they know if they're "returning offenders" and to throw them out. The straight edge assumption must have come from some memories of dumb emo high school girls...

That's actually where the straight edge "X's" came from. They would purposely get X's marked on them even if they were obviously over 21 to show that they weren't going to drink.

More specifically:

...straight edge X can be traced to the Teen Idles' brief U.S. West Coast tour in 1980. The Teen Idles were scheduled to play at San Francisco's Mabuhay Gardens, but when the band arrived, club management discovered that the entire band was under the legal drinking age and therefore would be denied entry to the club. As a compromise, management marked each of the Idles' hands with a large black X as a warning to the club's staff not to serve alcohol to the band. Upon returning to Washington, D.C., the band suggested this same system to local clubs as a means to allow teenagers in to see musical performances without being served alcohol. The Teen Idles released a record in 1980 called Minor Disturbance with the cover shot being two hands with black X's on the back. The mark soon became associated with the Straight Edge lifestyle.

That one is new to me, but it makes sense, especially if the venue uses a wrist band system for booze.

I get the straight edge connotations too, though, just didn't seem to fit in with this picture. Either way, we were both right to correct omiclix, because it definitely wouldn't lead to an assumption that the kid is high.

eh lets see, probably some local band (consisting of what appears to be Kanye West and Keyboard Cat, as i now see on the left side of the picture) playing at a house party. Sheamus here decided to go out and own the dance floor. and everyone knows Seamus' go to move is the leg spread, arm pump. that is, everyone except for Nicole who, impressed by Seamus' wicked dance moves, decides to come bust a move. however her fist-to-the-floor, foot-to-the-sky move meant a busted nut for Sheamus, as we see by the look of horror on his face. the cats were ther because the flash of the camera was a mystery and needed to be investigated properly, meaning jumping and swinging their claws in the general direction of the source. all this put together and timed by Zeus himself and presto, we have internet gold.
