Just spreading some friendly Internet facts: Fossil fuels are not made from dead animals (that's ridiculous). It's from dead plants that undergo a special process taking thousands upon thousands of years. People say fossil fuels are non-renewable... Well, they are, just not at the rate at which we consume them.

This is still the funniest thing I've seen on reddit today.

[–]Nosirrom 14 points15 points ago

What is the difference in chemical structure between two which makes only the plants turn into fossil fuels?

[–]vincentrevelations 18 points19 points ago

You need stacks of dead organic stuff for fuel to form. Animals don't die on heaps, they get eaten or rot in bogs. Eventually the plants, fungi and bacteria that eat them will fossilize into a substance which can be used for fuel.

Animals rarely fossilize, and when they do they're often isolated and inaccessible.

[–]noddwyd 16 points17 points ago

"Animals don't die on heaps".....I don't know why, but I feel the need to go back in time, massacre thousands of animals and bury them in a 'heap' mass grave, just to prove this comic somehow right.

[–]BlazeOrangeDeer 0 points1 point ago

I think there are heaps of dinosaurs in former tar pits. There was one in hot springs SD I went to.

[–]ergovisavis 0 points1 point ago

[–]sleeplessone 0 points1 point ago

I'm picturing a conversation between Bill and Ted about doing this. Then digging into the garden and striking oil.

[–]TheLonelyStranger 3 points4 points ago

So, technically, the animals do turn into fossil fuels, just indirectly. They simply first need to be consumed by a plant.

[–]Diligent_Nose 3 points4 points ago

The microorganism part is more important than plant, think total biomass.

[–]vincentrevelations 0 points1 point ago

Indeed. I think in discussions like these only the last forms the energy was in before the usage are important.

If you'd trace all the energy from our earth back to its source, you'll find that all our energy (from wind to fossil fuel) once was solar energy (that's nuclear energy). Even before that it was the big bang. Thermodynamics, motherfucker. That's right, you are the big bang using big bang energy to power you laptop made from big bang matter.

[–]Diligent_Nose 0 points1 point ago

Yes, however knowing how oil/natural gas/coal/uranium etc. forms is very important if one wishes to extract it for use.

[–]Mysteryman64 0 points1 point ago

What if they died in a giant heap of plant matter.

THEY COULD BE OIL!

[–]lolicats 0 points1 point ago

well...if the plants and fungi that gorged themselves on the dinos become fuel...then by the transitive property doesnt that mean the fuel is made from dinos?

[–]vincentrevelations 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, but because the earth was formed because of a star explosion, fossil fuel is actually solar energy.

[–]lolicats 0 points1 point ago

renewable resource ftw!

[–]JayPetey 0 points1 point ago

My father uses this argument to prove to me that Noah's Flood is fact, and did in fact kill animals in heaps.

[–]rakxz 0 points1 point ago

I don't get it.

[–]vincentrevelations 0 points1 point ago

A worldwide flood would kill all animals, and wash them into valleys.

[–]rakxz 0 points1 point ago

I suppose... But wasn't the biblical great flood supposedly around 3,000 BC? That's not enough time for fossil fuels from what I can gather.

[–]Nosirrom 0 points1 point ago

Oh yeah. Because plant stuff doesn't decompose in bogs! Thanks for clearing that up.

[–]vincentrevelations 0 points1 point ago

Err, bogs are full of decomposed and recycled plant stuff. That's what I meant. Animals that drown in bogs decompose and are recycled for plant food. They turn into plants before they would fossilize.

[–]Nosirrom 0 points1 point ago

Wait, no. Bogs have humic acid that inhibits the bacteria which decompose organic matter. That's why there are layers of organic matter and nutrient poor soil.

[–]vincentrevelations 1 point2 points ago

I'm sorry, English is not my first language. I think "bog" is a broad definition of anything swampy. The only bogs I know in real life are fens, they're full of sphagnum, cotton grass and sundews. Those are pretty rich, but too wet for trees.

[–]Nosirrom 0 points1 point ago

Oh alright.

[–]Mr_A 0 points1 point ago

Is it possible to bury plants in some sort of high pressure... underground thing... in order to generate more fossils and as such more fossil fuel?

[–]vincentrevelations 0 points1 point ago

I think using decomposition to turn plants into energy would be better than fossilization. Biogas energy is already a thing.

[–]captainolimar 4 points5 points ago

Actually, isn't that the formation for coal?

I thought oil was made of algae and plankton in aquatic environments dying and settling into the sea floor (or lake bed I guess)..

So part of oil would be animals, just not dinosaurs.

[–]keidjxz 0 points1 point ago

Except algae and phytoplankton are plants so oil is more of a mix of plants and animals.

[–]raddat 0 points1 point ago

Well, it's the process for a range of carbon based fuels. You're right, but oil found in the ground could have also originated from ancient swamp areas.

[–]juhugafuga 11 points12 points ago

I came here to say this and also that you have to be high as fuck to have thought of this in the first place, if albeit a little misguidedly.

[–]raddat 1 point2 points ago

I agree, but to be fair, having the word fossil (synonymous to dinosaur bones to some) in fossil fuels can be misleading for those who aren't informed.

[–]Supahh 1 point2 points ago

"Thousands upon thousands" not millions.

Thank You.

[–]raddat 0 points1 point ago

Yes, millions, but scientists who were researching how to make carbon fuels renewable found that the process can occur naturally in several thousand years.

[–]takes_all_thecredit -2 points-1 points ago

Don't mention it... it's nothing really. But I appreciate that. You're welcome!

[–]PoopPooperson 1 point2 points ago

So you are saying this never happened? :'(

[–]Stair_Car 0 points1 point ago

Also, much/most of the fossil fuels used today were actually formed before the Mesozoic. There's a reason they call it the "Carboniferous" after all.

[–]ImaNarwhal 0 points1 point ago

TIL.

[–]vocaltalentz 0 points1 point ago

TIL :D Seriously though, thank you for that information, it will greatly impact my life.

[–]tyvanius 0 points1 point ago

Plants feed off animal remains, therefore in a way, those plants that grew over him, were him. They then became fossil fuel, which then led to the hadrosaur destruction.

[–]FuLLMeTaL604 0 points1 point ago

I am not a biologist but I think you have to be more specific with the term animal if you are stating something like this. If you mean part of the Animalia kingdom then it is possible that jelly fish, who are part of this kingdom, have become fossil fuel.

[–]Odusei 0 points1 point ago

Also worth pointing out, the Geneva Conventions specifically forbid using museums or hospitals as barracks for soldiers, and likewise forbids bombing museums or hospitals in order to avoid situations like the one depicted in this comic.

[–]raddat 0 points1 point ago

To avoid dinosaurs finally getting revenge? You learn something new every day...

[–]Odusei 0 points1 point ago

Erm... yes. That is exactly what I meant.

[–]ontopic 0 points1 point ago

I am so glad your post is at the top.

[–]Ras_H_Tafari 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't sound so ridiculous. I obviously don't know the chemistry, but just by the fact that oil is mostly carbon and animals are mostly carbon, makes enough sense. I mean, if Earth life was silicon-based or something like that and the whole 'carbon-based' thing was one of those wild misconceptions, then i'd say it's ridiculous.

but... yeah, probably something like the carbon in living things can't be separated simply by rotting...

[–]raddat 0 points1 point ago

Fair logic but any animal carcass that becomes oil/other carbon fuel has to survive being eaten by other animals, survive being eaten by micro organisms, and survive rotting and becoming plant material - the very plants which become carbon fuel! :)

[–]clush 0 points1 point ago*

You are thinking of coal.

Coal forms when plant material coverts into peat (decayed vegetation) and over time goes through phases to turn into coal. Fossil fuels are made over time from buried dead organisms (includes animals) in the presence of oxygen, which breaks down the organism. Hence why fossil fuel is comprised of many forms of hydrocarbons (methane, propane, butane, etc).

[–]BerateBirthers -4 points-3 points ago

Fossil fuels are not made from dead animals (that's ridiculous)

Why is it ridiculous? It seems like the perfectly destructive thing the oil lobby would do.

[–]Ras_H_Tafari 1 point2 points ago

hurr let's take a break from a scientific discussion to compare oil companies to Saturday-morning cartoon villains

[–]BerateBirthers -1 points0 points ago

It's not my fault oil companies act like Saturday-morning cartoon villains.

[–]Ras_H_Tafari 1 point2 points ago

Hyperbole doesn't help anything, it just weakens the message you're trying to convey

[–]raddat 0 points1 point ago

Heh animals are involved in the process but plants take up a significantly larger portion of the end product, as animals rot and are eaten by other animals and organisms and, you guessed it, plants.

And yes, it is suiting for the oil lobby groups to be all for animal oil, but remember that any animals involved have been dead for millions of years, so I think it's okay and not so destructive. :)

[–]Burlapin 13 points14 points ago

Shameless plug for r/Dinosaurs...

[–]rderekp 0 points1 point ago

Dinosaurs are so old hat. Pleistocene megafauna are what all the cool kids are into these days.

[–]Burlapin 1 point2 points ago

Oh man, my search yielded results far beyond anything I expected.

[–]rderekp 0 points1 point ago

I know, I got that thing too looking for a subreddit. :D

[–]Bi11 9 points10 points ago

I think the creator deserves credit. Also I think the comic looks slightly better on the webcomic's site.

[–]AcidKing[S] 1 point2 points ago

Off course the creator deserves a credit, I just found it very clever and funny and post it here to spread the joy! It went pretty viral I must say, didn't expect that. Hope I do not get my ass sued! :-)

Just out of curiosity: Why do people link "youtu.be" links instead of the "youtube.com" address?

[–]gulviz 2 points3 points ago

It is YouTube's official link shorterener, it was put in place to help for those sharing links in confined character limit areas (Twitter) and to show that you will be going to a YouTube video officially

Using the AutoShare feature on YouTube will automatically resend using this format

[–]Krishna_Mulvaney 1 point2 points ago

It's the one youtube serves up when you hit the "share" button.

Why people actually use the shitty little buttons on sites like youtube still remains a mystery, however.

[–]Gembu 0 points1 point ago

They are simply shorter adresses of the videos provided by youtube. You get the youtu.be links when you click the share button under videos.

[–]Rhubarb_Ninja 0 points1 point ago

Totally related. :)

[–]Sappharos 0 points1 point ago

The weird part of Youtube just got weirder.

[–]Zeyphersan 6 points7 points ago

Do... Do you not know what Adventure Time is?

I was at the Natural History museum today - can confirm there was no exhibit of 'Hadrosaur Family' left.

[–]nearlyepic 5 points6 points ago

Damn, I thought it was a Mass Effect comic.

[–]SkyNTP 0 points1 point ago

Came here looking for this. I believe there is a reference. in ME3

[–]nearlyepic 0 points1 point ago

No, in Mass Effect 1 all the enemies do is scream "I WILL DESTROY YOU" Haven't played ME3 yet and I don't plan to.

[–]CHEEKY_BASTARD 1 point2 points ago

Did anyone else read the title in Morbo's voice?

[–]jianshen 1 point2 points ago

Yup. I also heard Linda's blissfully ignorant laughter in my head.

[–]lrc1123 1 point2 points ago

WTF is WFT?

[–]usachan29 1 point2 points ago

If you read it backwards It's about dinosaur skeletons being on fire and after a time lapse, everything reverts back to dinosaur era, and t rex looking things comes out of the mud, chases some other dinosaurs... and gives up when he realized he's hungry

[–]CannedBeef 3 points4 points ago

Sure, blame it on the dinosaur.

[–]groovingupslowly 3 points4 points ago

I'm confused. Is America bombing England?

[–]Matthias21 17 points18 points ago

Its a German plane... i love the assumption that if something is being bombed that the USA is doing it though, hi-larious.

[–]formerRESaddict 0 points1 point ago

that's raysis!

[–]groovingupslowly 0 points1 point ago

I guess I just missed the panel where Germany has a desert with oil or America sells their oil to Nazi Germany.

[–]BusinessSearchLongmo 3 points4 points ago

America? I think that the airplane is supposed to be German. Iron cross on it? Not entirely sure, but that's what I interpreted it as.

[–]nate800 2 points3 points ago

[–]FaZaCon 0 points1 point ago

Amazing what can happen when time is infinite.

[–]zackks 0 points1 point ago

I am disappoint that there was no connection to Kevin Bacon in that.

[–]toolongdontread 2 points3 points ago

Well, the hadrosaur was featured in ST:VOY, with Chakotay. Chakotay made out with Seven of Nine. Seven of Nine fought with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The Rock was in "The Game Plan" with Kira Sedgewick, who was in "The Woodsman" with Kevin Bacon.

[–]JoeTheDolfan -5 points-4 points ago

It's their fossils thus the term Fossil Fuel. If you're gonna call someone out don't be so stupid.

[–]fhite_n_derdy 3 points4 points ago

ಠ_ಠ

Petroleum is derived from ancient fossilized organic materials, such as zooplankton and algae.[20] Vast quantities of these remains settled to sea or lake bottoms, mixing with sediments and being buried under anoxic conditions.

[–]aladino80 -2 points-1 points ago

It's hilarious, he was write haha
