That's why winglets have become so common. They're used to tame the wingtip vortexes.

Winglets will tame wingtip vortexes, yes, but they also create added parasite drag.

Vortexes create more drag at low speed (Induced drag), while causing almost none at high speed. This means Winglets are most often used on commuter aircraft that will be making shorter flights, and thus spend more time at low airspeed.

Not true. You will get vortex(induced) drag at high speed also. Induced drag is a function of wing lift distribution. You can minimize induced drag by making the distribution elliptic across the span. Winglets are used on transonic aircrafts as well as an low speed aircrafts.

They also increase lift for the same wing area which I'd why they ate used on most transport aircraft.

Ah, I thought I was getting that wrong, except it's vortices. Thanks for the spell check, but no points awarded for also getting it wrong.

You got me. I made the mistake of just assuming whoever was above me spelled it right. You tried to correct me, and then got it wrong again. Which one of us was paying more attention?

But it's okay, the alcohol did it I'm sure.

i got the important parts correct... tices.... so vortices.. lol watching doctor who now so good night all around

...just assuming whoever was above me spelled it right.

I did. See my other comment.

edit:
What kind of dumb-assedness leads to this being downvoted? Here's the bleepin' dictionary page:
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/vortex
It is correctly spelled either way.

Ever since the epic debate over the plural of "octopus", I've been cautious. Thus, I actually consulted the dictionary for the plural of vortex. "Vortexes" was the first plural listed, so I used it, although vortices is another option.

For those who are interested, this (and a couple of others) is also the effect that people forgot to calculate when they added "bumblebees are too heavy to fly" to the wikipedia list of common misconceptions.

yeah, i love that list. It totally killed the Bee movie for me when it said that at the beginning. bugged me the entire time.

I just sent Nowhereman a message on why I posted this picture. In summary, my message said:

  • I was not aware it had been posted. I searched on Karmadecay. I do my best to not post things that have been posted before, even if they were only viewed by a couple dozen Redditors.
  • Because we both independently posted the picture (and since the picture is years old), it can be assumed that we got it from the same website.
  • My post did not detract any attention from his (many hours apart).
  • He nor I have the 'exclusive rights' to the karma. Neither of us took the picture.
  • Packaging/titling/timing of posts does matter most of the time. Not saying mine were optimal, but they were obviously more successful.

If anyone reading this still thinks I was in the wrong in posting this picture, I'd love to address your points. I'm totally open to persuasion.

Why am I writing so much about this, you ask? I have better things to do, so I'll write on end about anything trivial like this to fuel my self-destructive procrastination binge.

It's really cool. There are also some cool pictures of airplanes making vortexes in clouds. Fibbonaci in nature is neat.

This looks like an air tractor set up for crop dusting, which is a very powerful airplane for it's size and weight. I'd like to see what benefit this would get from a blended wing or even just and upturned tip.

Aside from not having propellers of course.

If you look at the new website for the How Things Fly gallery in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, they have a whole section that talks about vortex drag and it uses that exact picture.

I fucking hate it when a jumbo jet takes off and I have to wait on the taxiway for three minutes so this shit can clear.

The dredded tip vortex.

Even paragliders make seriously large ones. I once tied 20 metre long ribbons to the outer trailing edge of an Edel Racer - and was extremely impressed with the size of them: at least 3 metres in diameter in a wing only 10 metres across!

If your close to an airport, and there are 737s landing you can hear this swirling wind come by a good 30 seconds to a minute after the jet passes.

That's not actually what the pattern is. This is caused by turbulence at the wing tips where air is in addition to passing below and under the wing, also traveling around it to the side. This creates the vortex patten which spins off from the wingtips and extends extremely far. Your picture seems to show the flares being ejected from the airplane body, not many of which are near the wingtip region and so would not be affected by the turbulent flow. You can however see some traces of the vortex in the smoke trail left by the flares.
