Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Me too but it had to be done

[–]sexgott 35 points36 points ago

Imagine how awkward it would be if they weren't.

[–]sporvath 0 points1 point ago

Where is this gif from?

[–]Ecorin 8 points9 points ago

I thought about 5 full minutes thinking what the play on words on the title of this post was.

I'm an idiot. I get it now.

yo dawg...

[–]hyperbovine 0 points1 point ago

Wait... WHAT?!

[–]TheLobotomizer 1 point2 points ago

The phrase "it's a play on words" is being used in a play on words making it the subject of a play on words.

In short, yo dawg..

[–]tanneragle 4 points5 points ago

[–]blankblank 0 points1 point ago

Did you just climax?

[–]natty_dread 135 points136 points ago

it's the austrian bregenzer seebühne, which means begenz' lake-stage literally translated. (bregenz is a city in austria)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bregenzer_Festspiele

[–]Self_Manifesto 75 points76 points ago

Ah, Austria. Put another shrimp on the barbie, eh?

[–]Gamand 32 points33 points ago

more like... putting another wiener schnitzel on the mozart

[–]drmrpepperpibb 38 points39 points ago

That's my favorite sex position.

[–]jxj24 1 point2 points ago

Only because you get to be the Mozart.

[–]callmecoon 13 points14 points ago

[–]LuckyAmeliza 10 points11 points ago

OH GOD! Street view!! Street View! ( drag the little orange/yellow man from the top of the bar on the left into the blue dots in it.)

[–]IHaveToBeThatGuy 14 points15 points ago

The same from Quantum of Solace. Very Nice

[–]laszlojamf 21 points22 points ago

My dad designed the lighting for the opera (Tosca) that was used in this scene. He also lit Andrea Chenier at Bregenz last year.

[–]WadeK 1 point2 points ago

I'm... I'm so jealous...

you must get to see some amazing shows!

[–]Spiel88 1 point2 points ago

Your dad has an exceptional job. Do you guys get to go to the opera for free? That would be such a treat.

[–]Zopoko 7 points8 points ago*

I live 8km away from there. They always have a great set, I think they change it every two years

[–]starlinguk 1 point2 points ago

I saw their stage a couple of years ago. Freaky!

[–]pdmcmahon 1 point2 points ago

Doesn't this get posted once a month or something?

[–]schf1ftyfive 59 points60 points ago

The stage changes its setting every 2 years. Currently it is a giant head,

http://www.bregenzerfestspiele.com/de/

previously it was giant feet.

http://www.rpkd.de/uploads/pics/aida_bregenz.jpg

Source: I live there.

[–]wonkywonka 80 points81 points ago

Wow! What's it like to live on a stage?

[–]6xoe 7 points8 points ago

The good ol' reddit literalroo.

[–]jonathanjrouse 0 points1 point ago

It approaches the unreal, from what I've heard.

[–]easternbikes99 11 points12 points ago

This stage is really something else! I went to go see Aida in August of 2010 and it was just mind-blowing how they did the opera. There are cranes that pick up and move the different pieces of the stage and the stage even sinks underwater for a portion of the opera. Going to the Bregenzer Festspiel is definitely a must!

[–]GeorgieThePenguin 0 points1 point ago

Nice!

[–]StochasticOoze 4 points5 points ago

Was that for their production of Spamalot?

[–]laszlojamf 2 points3 points ago

My dad has designed the lighting for a few operas there including Tosca, which was used in Quantum of Solace. He also did Andrea Chenier (the head one) last year.

[–]Bin4ryB4ndit 1 point2 points ago

Upvote for vorarlberger redditor!

[–]VeryGoodLookingMan 1 point2 points ago

I do not know what is more disquieting---the fact that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it has four toes.

[–]Asdayasman 2 points3 points ago

There are 5 there.

[–]VeryGoodLookingMan 2 points3 points ago

Silly me. I thought he had L O S T one.

[–]Asdayasman 1 point2 points ago

Don't get it, sorry.

[–]Brettersson 0 points1 point ago

in the James bond film "quantum of solace" there's a scene set ob a theater with a massive stage, and I think I read somewhere that it was also for this play, but I am on my phone so it is not easy for me to check right now

[–]grandpa 2 points3 points ago

Same stage, different opera (Tosca).

[–]thedeaux 0 points1 point ago

originally I was relieved because that skeleton gives me nightmares.

and then i clicked the link for the giant head.

[–]Osiris32 185 points186 points ago

As a professional stage hand, I approve of this set. However, I don't want to be the lighting guy, as everything would have to be vastly overpowered in order to reach and properly illuminate the set. Which means an extremely powerful circuit (800 amps at least) and a fairly complex rig behind the camera to hold it all.

Focusing would also be a bitch, since it could only be done at night and the distance involved means communication issues. That means riggers, and we don't want riggers touching things with their greasy, tobacco-stained hands.

And no, the acoustics wouldn't be good, so much sound would be lost to the open air. That means every performer would have to be mic'd and that means an INSANE wireless system. I worked with that kind of system when we did Wicked a few years ago, racks and racks of wireless recievers and transmitters (in-ear monitors) that seem to constantly find new ways to distort or be interfered with.

CONCLUSION: fun as all fucking hell to build, but a bitch to run.

[–]sinews 16 points17 points ago

Thing is, the best ambient lighting there is free anyway.

[–]Osiris32 9 points10 points ago

Awesome for photos, bad for theater. It's uncontrolale and unfocusable, plus it's change from night to night based on weather.

[–]I_Will_Allow_This 5 points6 points ago

2/10 would not bang

[–]laszlojamf 17 points18 points ago

My dad designed the lighting for quite a few shows there.

[–]abt5000 10 points11 points ago

Well get him over here! That sounds amazing and I would listen to anything he had to say about the experience.

[–]laszlojamf 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to visit him in a week in copenhagen. I'll try and get him to do an AMA.

[–]Osiris32 2 points3 points ago

What abt5000 said. I'd love to hear about that stage.

[–][deleted] 92 points93 points ago*

"we don't want riggers touching things with their greasy, tobacco-stained hands."

Wow! who would have thought so much racism still permeated the theater world

[–]Osiris32 82 points83 points ago

Riggers, AKA Rafter Monkeys.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Osiris32 29 points30 points ago

It's ok, I'm taking it back.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points ago

I'm sorry but it's not enough.

"First they came for the riggers and I said nothing because I wasn't a rigger...."

[–]Osiris32 2 points3 points ago

Ecce homo qui est faba?

[–]Davey_Jones 5 points6 points ago

You can't just, " take it back".

[–]dzunravel 5 points6 points ago

Perfectly reasonable greeting between two white guys in IATSE: What's up, my rigger?

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

Which local?

28 here.

[–]hsofia 17 points18 points ago

as a sound/lighting designer I second this

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points ago

As a lazy person, I fourth meal this.

[–]1_point_21_gigawatts 25 points26 points ago

As a hobbit, I second breakfast this.

[–]bettorworse 6 points7 points ago

As a much older hobbit, I elevenses this.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points ago

Rigger, please!

[–]nick993 3 points4 points ago

Riggers gonna rig

[–]Ncraft 4 points5 points ago

Crimpin' ain't easy!

[–]abt5000 7 points8 points ago

As a professional lighting guy, I would LOVE to work on that. A Source-4 5 degree would probably work for most of the furthest throws. I am not sure what you mean by an 800 amp circuit. No doubt, they would be using a lot of power to light that set. If this were in America I am sure it would require at least three or four 400amp services at.

The focus would definitely have to be at night, but communication would not be too bad. I would use radios.

Source: NYSF Shakespeare in The Park

[–]Osiris32 1 point2 points ago

The only reason I wouldn't use radios is the potential interference wth the wireless systems.

As for the services...well, it would really depend on how much light was needed and where the light was coming from, wouldn't it? Showguns would be a bit much, but Par 64s would barely look like a candle on a stage that big in the open air.

It would be a challenge to design, for sure. Maybe a stick of 18" kicked about 10 feet down from the edge of the stage, with a bunch of Mac2ks....

[–]abt5000 2 points3 points ago

I was checking out some of the photos from this page to get an idea of where they are lighting the stage from. It looks like there are a couple of positions close enough to use PAR 64s. That being said, it looks like they are using about 1000 of them...

I am not sure what they would be using for the long shots. Hanging positions probably vary a good amount from one show to another too so you are right that it really depends on what they need. Still, I bet all of shows average around 1500 lights. I would love to hear from someone who has worked there about what it is like.

I wonder where the followspots sit and what they have to use to make their shots on stage. That is a job I would not want...

[–]snyderson 5 points6 points ago

"I told you I don't want you serving them 2 riggers"

[–]TKmac02 2 points3 points ago

As a former professional technical director, I second this one thousand times.

[–]Wrightde 2 points3 points ago

I had a friend who worked on a show like this and she had a very unexpected issue. She had to watch her colors and her cues, or else passing boats would mistake some of the lights as various communication signals.

[–]Osiris32 2 points3 points ago

Lol, that's not a problem I would have ever thought of. Shit, I could see the Coast Guard getting really pissed about something like that...

[–]afrael 2 points3 points ago

Please do an AMA if you haven't already, I'm sure you'll have some great stories to tell :P.

[–]Osiris32 6 points7 points ago

[–]afrael 1 point2 points ago

Awesome, thanks for the link :D.

[–]canakiwi 0 points1 point ago

I used to do theatre, and I approve this message. I would have hated working it. I do want to see it.

[–]brightifrit 0 points1 point ago

I got my degree in theatrical makeup. The makeup on this has also got to be pretty nasty. Making it so people's faces show up that far away, and at night? And with the lighting you're describing? They must look pretty hilarious up close.

[–]kergeten 14 points15 points ago

Good thing that skeleton is holding the book open, otherwise splat!!

[–]stumpblubber 15 points16 points ago

Here are a few more pics from the Bregenz Festival.

[–]niperwiper 1 point2 points ago

I was not prepared for that level of awesome. God damn it Europe, why do you have to show off?

[–]225lbs 1 point2 points ago

They actually care about theatre! As a theatrically minded person in America, I've noticed how suffocating it is here.

[–]Snapperfish5 11 points12 points ago

Not a play, an opera. It was for Un Ballo in Maschera at the Bregenz festival. http://www.bregenzerfestspiele.com/en/node/93

[–]DarkCc 0 points1 point ago

omg! It even happened in a place I know about! I suddenly feel a lot less stupid ;)

[–]haylcron 9 points10 points ago

Opera*

[–]Shitty_Watercolour 369 points370 points ago

[–]ewade 134 points135 points ago

Wow, it feels like I'm sitting right in front of the real thing.

[–]StarWolfe 53 points54 points ago

I'm pretty sure he's just using the same image OP put up.

[–]IMasturbateToMyself 40 points41 points ago

Even RES said [duplicate image ignore comment].

[–]DiscoDonkey 60 points61 points ago

Did you give your account to someone else? Because you suddenly got a lot shittier after you made that "after one month" post.

[–]newtothelyte 11 points12 points ago

He must be in a slump.

[–]Whenthenighthascome 9 points10 points ago

Or he's going back to his roots.

[–]Bobsmit 1 point2 points ago

This is his blue period. We are making history, folks

[–]Berkel 7 points8 points ago

But the book'll get wet :o

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

Were you sent here by the devil!??

[–]isaac-newton 13 points14 points ago

No, good sir, I'm on the level.

The ring came off my pudding can!

[–]DeliriumSC 8 points9 points ago

Take my pen knife, my good man!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

This is as close as you can get to the stage without getting your eyes wet

[–]asshatnowhere 1 point2 points ago

absolute masterpiece!

[–]Whenthenighthascome 0 points1 point ago

Those are fucking black triangles, this is the first one of yours I can conclusively say is downright shitty. I doff my hat to you.

[–]easternbikes99 5 points6 points ago

Here's another example of the Bregenzer Festspiel. This stage is from an opera called Aida. http://i.imgur.com/QY7u7.jpg

[–]HomelessCosmonaut 4 points5 points ago

This was in the most recent Bond film, right?

[–]Ghostalker474 17 points18 points ago

Reminds me of this from The Simpsons Movie:

http://i.imgur.com/EXy1e.png

[–]somefilmguy 2 points3 points ago

Sorry Bregenzer Festspiele, but SIMPSONS DID IT!!!

[–]livinglogic 20 points21 points ago

This is ridiculously awesome. I'm not sure what being on acid is like, but I'm sure that feeling combined with walking past this would probably induce me to shit myself.

[–]homesickalien 8 points9 points ago

One time I took a big shit on acid and thought I was shitting my intestines out. I shouldn't have tried to stuff them back in. :(

[–]ifyourheadexplodes 2 points3 points ago

You should read Guts.

[–]Space_Bat 1 point2 points ago

Never have I shat myself on acid. I'm sure what acid is like and walking past this gave me that feeling.... Wait, wut?

[–]FLAAAPY_DOOODLE -1 points0 points ago

FLAAAAAAAPY DOOOOOODLE!

[–]Osiris32 2 points3 points ago

With the proper context, you could be quite funny.

But I'm watching you...

[–]lowcatalina 2 points3 points ago

What play(s)?

[–]kaethre 11 points12 points ago

Not a play, actually, but an opera! Verdi's Ballo in Maschera. It's one of Verdi's better operas, with powerful and dark music

[–]Banjulioe 2 points3 points ago

I would recommend listening to it if you have a chance.

[–]Rorkimaru 2 points3 points ago

I bet the acoustics are awesome ಠ_ಠ

But nah, that is incredibly cool

[–]Lakashnik2 2 points3 points ago

isnt this the same place (Different set) as where the opera scene was filmed in Quantum of Solace?

[–]L0CHNESSM0BSTER 2 points3 points ago

The reapers... They are already here!

[–]mofn 3 points4 points ago

I remember seeing that on a site called Reddit...

[–]QCGold 1 point2 points ago

That is really cool!

[–]newtothelyte 1 point2 points ago

I propose that we as a society should build more giant skeletons.

[–]wagnerotic 1 point2 points ago

Not a play!! Ballo in Maschera by Giuseppe Verdi! A wonderful opera :)

[–]crispinito 1 point2 points ago

I've been there. It's on a lake, at the limit between Germany and Austria. Women go topless to the beaches in that lake... there is a bicycle path that you can go between the two countries. There is no border or police, just a sign when you go into the other country... good times.

[–]gmw2222 1 point2 points ago

brought back an old memory at sea world from my childhood

[–]Draxman76 1 point2 points ago

Location is Bregenz, Austria. Next time put it in the post.

[–]goddessofwaterpolo 1 point2 points ago

May I ask what play is being performed?

[–]phschris1 1 point2 points ago

where is this?

[–]_timmie_ 1 point2 points ago

And by "play" you mean "Dethklok concert"?

[–]bboyauron 1 point2 points ago

No. its for an opera. Get your shit right.

[–]shaylybri 1 point2 points ago

It was actually for an opera! I think it was La Traviata.

[–]Perturbed_Spartan 1 point2 points ago

mass effect 2 anyone?

[–]wheatfields 1 point2 points ago

No, its actually a repost of an old image!

[–]nigrochinkspic 1 point2 points ago

This gets posted alot

[–]kihadat 1 point2 points ago

I guess people get it better when you say "play" and not "opera."

[–]Apex_Series 2 points3 points ago

This gets posted alot

So does this guy.

[–]rigozerot 0 points1 point ago

Looks like the skeleton outside the castle in N64's Castlevania.

[–]IsackArroz 0 points1 point ago

[–]BrainTroubles 0 points1 point ago

Is that stage slanted or is that an optical illusion? It looks tilted to the right, but it also looks like everyones feet are at the same level on each side.

[–]LeCoeur 0 points1 point ago

This is by far the most liberal adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire I've ever seen.

[–]krissypants4000 0 points1 point ago

This stage changes every few years - now it looks like this!

[–]agenthenry 0 points1 point ago

reminds me of the simpsons episode guest starring green day. the stage sunk.

[–]unemployedzombie 0 points1 point ago

[–]jsweet1011 0 points1 point ago

[–]nnnslogan 0 points1 point ago

What is this? A book for ants... err.. giants.
