My friend was in these kinds of pageants when she was a child. She has watched the show and agrees that these moms are nuts. Back in the early 90's, clip on teeth, spray tans, and 5 metric tons of makeup were unheard of. You put your child out there in a cute outfit, had them smile, and then do something adorable and/or talented. None of this "watch how much my daughter shakes her ass," shit.

Everyone likes to think these types of shows (any show where fat hicks fight about things) are marketed to trashy families, pedophiles, or semi-retarded individuals. No long ago, I realized this wasn't true.

My mom and a couple of my sisters were flipping through the channels and bumped into TLC. I don't remember if it was Toddlers and Tiaras or not, but it made me want to vomit. "Why don't you turn that off?" I said. Everyone agreed it was horrible and disgusting and needed to be turned off. "Okay, I'll turn it..." my sister said, as she moved her hand toward the remote. And then just held it there. Kept watching. "This is horrible!" people in the room continued to agree.

"Awful!"

"Terrible"

"What is this trash?"

And so they said things like that over and over until the episode was done. That's the target market of trash TV.

Not sure if anyone really cares but ive been studying reality TV academically. The interesting thing about this show is while the child pageants are detestable the show actually frames them that way. The show, if anything, is going to help people get outraged about it. So just bear in mind that if you think child beauty pageants are child abuse, this show might be a good resource for conveying that point to others.

The thing is that this show isn't the problem. It's marketed towards people like you and me, people who see it for the trashy bullshit trainwreck that it is. The true villains of the piece are child beauty pageants, which would be happening whether or not there was a show about them. If anything, the show is good because it draws people's attention to this crap.

If the kid wants to be part of a pageant or whatever, what's wrong with letting them do it? And if the issue is that most kids hate it and their parents make them do it, this happens a lot in life and I don't see why forced pageants are any kind of problem compared to other stupid shit parents make their kids do.

edit: I probably don't understand the context of the picture after reading other comments, so I'll just say this was made under the assumption that OP was referring to little kids being forced into beauty pageants.

We don't need to shut down the pageants all together. They are like any other hobby for these girls. The problem is the parents and the absurd lengths they go to help their child win. Psychologically and physically, these parents are hurting their children. It needs to stop.

To add, I've watched the show many times with my girlfriend who loves TLC and every once in a while their are parents who are genuinely good parents. They don't go through with any of the extreme measures most of these pageant moms resort to. Because of the few that do it right, the institution should be given a second chance.

Very sad that some parents need to see their kids in such a competitive light, at the expense of the child's well-being.

It's one thing to cheer your kid on at a sports match, even loudly, but it's another thing altogether to force them to take a mentality they don't understand (making them think that being pretty is the only thing that is important in life) and punish them if they fail.

The parents on the show almost make me sick, but I find it worse that people watch crap like this on MTV for entertainment.
