Dude looks like a lady. In the movie "The Crying Game", Stephen Rea's character Jimmie reaches for Dil's genital area and discovers that Dil is a trans woman with a penis. Jimmie runs into the bathroom and vomits but later makes amends by taking the murder rap for somebody that Dil killed.

[–]VagMaster2000 73 points74 points ago

I was a server this past summer, I used to dislike waitresses doing this, then I realized when you have 10 tables you're waiting on, and every single one of them are stuffing their faces, asking them a question when they don't have food in there mouth is the least of your priorities.

[–]ace9213 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I waited tables for two years and this is pretty much how I feel. If you had food in your mouth and you just did a quick nod I would walk off and maybe do a walk by in a minute to see if they needed anything really quick.

[–]Urie_nator 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a waiter, i was trained this was the best time to ask customers, because if they had food in their mouth they most likely won't complain about the food.

[–]TheLateThagSimmons 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No one trained me to do this, I just found it works really well. So long as you show up often enough, no one can truly complain that you weren't attentive.

[–]fritopie 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a line though... there have been several times where the waiter/waitress came by way too often. It was annoying. Constantly interrupting our meal and conversations. I'd rather just have you check on me once shortly after my food gets there and if my drink appears to be getting low, come by again. Then, check please.

[–]TheLateThagSimmons 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well of course. We don't want to bother people; at the same time doing the exact same thing at two different tables will result in one table thinking you were too bothersome while the exact next table will think you were missing the whole time.

[–]girl_with_huge_boobs 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

this. I know when I eat out, I don't want to talk to the server except to give my order. But I wait on a lot of people who want to talk about every little detail of their day/life.... You have to be really good at reading people to survive in this business....

[–]this_isnt_happening 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

AhHA! I knew it!

[–]annieface 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One waitress I knew said she did it specifically when they were eating or taking bites/drinks because it got them away from the table faster.

[–]fritopie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My usual problem is that I'll be chowing down on some chips and salsa or w/e at a Mexican place, the the waiter comes to take our drink orders or something and every, single, time, I will have just put a chip in my mouth when they come up and ask. Then my freaking mom, seeing me having just stuck a chip in my mouth will sit there and look at me like I'm supposed to go first in telling them what I want to order. Troll mom wins again.

[–]citizen_reddit 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never understood why waiters do not just stand near enough to make eye contact with someone, maybe do the questioning eyebrow raise - I don't know, anything but constantly come over and ask if everything is OK every 2 minutes.

Sometimes though this doesn't work. You thumbs up and they just stand there staring, waiting for a response. You try nonverbal communication with the eyes and they give you that flight attendant blank smile. After you are done skinning them you stick their face that way on the mask. That way whenever you put it on and look in the mirror you remember why you killed them.

We had presentations in archaeology today, and one of the pairs put white text on an electric blue background. Shit was so hard to read, it actually made me angry.

[–]snippy_gerbil 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nod and a thumbs up. If there is something wrong with the food I wouldn't take more than 1 bite so I wouldn't have that problem (though I don't think I've ever returned food). If I want something I just put my index finger up telling them to wait, quickly finish my mouthful, then ask politely. Also, I don't eat pasta like that when I'm at a restaurant. I use the fork/spoon method.

I serve, and I have to say... I try my best to time my visits when everyone (or at least someone) does not have a full mouth.

When I ask the question I make sure I make eye contact with the person who's not eating so that they can answer and me be on my way, but my goodness, I swear that every time I approach the table everyone starts eating double time.

[–]JBionic 10 points11 points ago

Bandwagon comment; Black texts is bad, blah blah blah.

Actual comment; As a server, I absolutely love going up to your tables right after you've taken a bite of food. That way you can only nod at me and I can quickly dismiss you for another 5 minutes or so. Or I can take it on myself to refill or get something for you, and make me a "Good Guy Server", which means you'll tip me more at the end.

[–]mummerlimn 3 points4 points ago

I try to stop by when the customer has no food in their mouth, however in the unfortunate event that they're stuffing their face, I'll just run by and give them a thumbs up accompanied by a "everything's good?" To which the majority of people nod and get that I'm not trying to get them to talk to me, but just trying to make sure it's all gravy.

Actually we do this because sometimes at the end of the meal the guest will complain about the taste or it was cold. And the entire meal is finished, basically if they complain enough they get a free meal and we either get a shitty tip or no tip at all.

Maybe they put the fork down if they go for a drink of water/soda/booze, but sometimes not. Maybe if you would put the damn fork down in between bites then this wouldn't happen.

As a server for various restaurants I would just like to say I made it my mission to try and do this to as many people in a day as possible. It's one of the small joys of being a server.

I was an amazing server because i understood this. We were trained to ask how the food was at like 3 minutes after delivering it. I never did this. I would ask if the food "looked" good right as I delivered it. This would get my guests to think "hey is this actually what I ordered?" and i could catch mistakes or make sure they were otherwise pleased with what I was dropping off. The 3 minute visit mark after that was to refill drinks though I would always make sure to be nearby. A few minutes after that would then be ok to make sure everything is "tasting" good.

When this happens to me:

  • I motion for them to "wait but stay right there, I have something to say". [5 seconds]
  • I finish my bite, chewing slowly. I savor it. [30 seconds]
  • I take a swig of my drink. [10 seconds]
  • I wipe my mouth with my napkin carefully. I fold the napkin and place it on the table. [10 seconds]
  • I clear my throat and say. [5 seconds]

"Great, thanks!"

I was a fine-dining server for 17 years. It is indeed possible to ask the guest within 3 bites or 3 minutes, if everything is as they like it and do so between bites.

The trick is to make yourself visible to the guest near the end of a bite. When they see you, approach and ask.

I'm so glad I live in a country where it isn't customary for servers to ask how the food is. If people like it, they will tell you on their own, if they dislike it they'll complain.

We also don't have the retarded "tipping is part of salary" standard here.. People rarely, if ever, tip waiter/waitresses here, they get their wages for a reason...

Despite the crap text, once I figured it out, this is also somewhat of answer. When I was training servers, the tip was to "Ask when your customer has a mouth of food. Go back in either 2 bites or 2 minutes." This is because, yes, you are less inclined to have a negative comment about the food when it's in your mouth. However, that's why you should try to get back in that 2-2 rule, it's also still early enough for the customer to complain and get it fixed quicker if there IS a problem with the food. Nothing like getting the order wrong and then having to wait 10 min to see the server again to fix the issue. Also, serve and take away from the left. Take the food order from the Woman first. Give the bill to the oldest looking male at the table.

I simply talk to them with my mouth full trying to make sure they see as much of my food as I can. that usually stops them from doing it again.

Many restaurants train their staff to approach you when your mouth is full because there tends to be less complaints.

Maybe shitty restaurants. I usually work at higher end places, and I cannot think of a single place that this would be condoned appropriate behavior. Of course, there's always the off-chance you get someone with their mouth full, but good places want to know that you're enjoying your experience to the fullest extent.

OP, I came in to post that I have absolutely no problem with your choice of color for the text in your picture. This is a situation that I relate to very much and a subject I have brought up numerous times with friends in the past. It is as if waiters and waitresses specifically wait until the moment you stuff your face to ask questions. Jerks.

The next time a waiter does this to me, I'm going to look them directly in the eye without blinking, chew my food very slowly and violently with my mouth open while making sure some food spills out, and respond to their question accordingly.

There is always an "alpha" at the table. Always. This person speaks for everyone. They order the apps and help get everyone else to order. They speak to the server when the server hits the table every time and then they are the ones that pay, unless grampaw is ready to stab someone if he doesn't get the bill. I could give a flying fuck about this ugly turd hammering spaghetti into his mouth. I look at the alpha for the sign that everything is fine.

I'm a waitress and believe me honey it's just as awkward for us when we do that! It's just habit when you walk by your table to make sure they're doing ok and don't need anything. Even if i can see youre doing fine with your food its an automatic thing to ask how is everything bc you might need another order, a refill, maybe you're out of ketchup, etc. but still. Awkward. Imagine standing there waiting for a response lol

As a former waiter, there really isn't a good time right after people start eating to ask if they're doing alright. Everybody is shoveling their faces and you're guaranteed to catch a couple of them mid stuff.

I have the same reaction for a different reason. Whenever I go to a restaurant and there are cute, hot male waiters, I always end up with the one female who is also waiting. Why????

I'll preface this by saying I've never waited tables, but I have worked for tips. I'll never understand why people put so much stock in a waiter's job. They do a few things:

  • Take your order.
  • Tell the cooks what to make.
  • Bring the food/drinks.

Do those three things with a modicum of respect and politeness, and with an honest sense of urgency... and I give you 25%. Granted, they do other things around the restaurant of course (cleaning, money handling, etc) - but as far as what we, the customer sees, those are the things.

I seriously get annoyed with people who over analyze their waiter or the restaurant, like they're looking for an excuse to complain and get free stuff and/or not tip. I'll even go so far as to chew (pun intended) out people I'm dining with if they're giving the waiter a hard time.

Why? Well it all boils down to this: Because I don't want spit in my food.

[–]Skwerley 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We (waiters) feel the same way. it feels impossible to walk up on someone eating without interrupting a conversation or bite of food. This is a mutual awkwardness.

[–]thethreadkiller 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone who has worked in sales, and restaurants his entire life, I can tell you that this is a tactic. You would look pretty stupid complaining about something that you were just shoving in your mouth. Another tactic is to start nodding when you ask them. Without realizing it, people will start to nod back, and you can take that as a "yes everything is alright".
