hard to tell from the pic provided but it appears to be a carpet anemone or mushroom coral. they can both be very aggressive. I don't know how knowledgeable you are of what you specifically have in your aquarium, but a quick touch of it should help you identify it as a normal soft coral or otherwise. anemone and some mushroom coral have stinging cells and should stick to your hand and not let go easily.( no it won't hurt) some types of mushroom coral such as the giant cup mushroom also feed on fish.

This is a Haddoni Carpet Anemone, they are very aggresive and are known fish killers. I have two, a green and a blue one, but they are housed in a separate aquarium with only clownfish. The one in the posted picture is Red Haddoni Carpet Anemome eating a Unicorn Tang.

most lps corals have mouths. They'll eat anything that fits in there. You should remove that fish from there though, the coral won't be able to suck it all up.

Also, that fish must have died prior to being eaten by the coral.

*edit so as pointed out it looks like a maxi mini anemone . Regardless, still not a good idea to keep it in there.

*edit2: Since we're on the subject here's a pic of my bubble coral munching on shrimp

Thanks for the advice. I did not see the fish die, but I did assume that it had died prior to being sucked on. I did not want to believe that the coral could actively pursue a moving fish.

Regarding moving the fish: I'm not sure that I have the jurisdiction to do that in my office. I'm certain that the office admin will call the fish person, though, and he will hopefully make that recommendation.

I had friends in highschool that were into marine biology, and they have told me that it is a nice gig. They get paid large sums of money to come maintain the tank (basically clean up dead fish and replace them with new ones). Their markup is ridiculous. I'm sure most of it goes back to whatever service/store they work for.

Even if their pay is not great, it would be cool to taxi fish around the city for rich people and office buildings.

I worked as an aquatic/reptile specialist at a few pet stores (some large chains and some small private stores) and I've been offered ~$75/hr to clean marine tanks in homes and offices. Of course it probably wouldn't take more than a few hours to clean/replenish the tank unless they were really gargantuan, but its still nice pay and if I took the jobs all the money would go to me.

[–]daninmontreal 68 points69 points ago

[–]IMongoose 114 points115 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Salt water fish tanks are very expensive to make and maintain. Some of those fish/corals are worth hundreds of dollars and are very easy to kill, and then kill everything else. Here's an example: Anemones are Cnidarians (like jellyfish) which means they produce a toxin. Sometimes when anemones get stressed/die they just decide that if they are goin down, everyone else is too and just dump all of their toxins into the water, killing the entire tank.

So to answer your question, it would take a while to learn how to not kill everything (couple months maybe) and then much much longer to convince people that you won't destroy their 5 grand fish tank.

The $75/hr job or the aquatic/reptile specialist job? The latter is very easy as that is exactly what I did. Knew nothing going in except that it sounded fun and learned an enormous amount of info over the first few months/years. Probably easier to start out at some crappy retail pet store (petco/petsmart/etc) b/c they don't care and they'll give you the beginner info in training.

The $75/hr job offers started coming when I worked in a store with lots of high quality salt water fish/animals b/c those are the guys willing to drop many hundreds of dollars and their own time to set up a tank and many have more money to throw at someone else to clean/maintain it. The best job I ever got that way was setting up a blood parrot freshwater tank in a really nice brand new asian restaurant that also served sushi. Getting paid in sushi was amazing and I still get free food and discounts everytime I go in.

I think the $75 number came up b/c that was just below what one of the local professional services charged. May be different in your area though.

I rescued/adopted a couple of fish from the department of fish and game a few years back. They had been seized in a customs thing, and were being rehomed. They could not be sold, and I could not transfer ownership. After they died, I was legally obligated to put them in plastic baggies and mail their bodies, with paperwork, back to the government.

I imagine that opening the mail there is the job of a biology grad student/intern.

tl;dr: It's not all glamorous fish taxiing, people.

[–]elath_ex_machina 42 points43 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was a fish guy in college. The pay was good, but it really sucked when a rich guy would try to dictate the schedule of the tank by what funds he had, and wouldn't take "those fish won't be able to live yet" for an answer. I ended up walking away from money just because of the shut-up-and-take-my-money attitudes.

[–]KittenRaffle 46 points47 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You'd think that, but I'm not sure the job is all that it's cracked up to be. When you end up having to become a male escort specializing in "dates" that no one else will accept because of their physical deformities or unfortunate mental health situations, you'll be singing a different tune.

Possibly a rented display. Sometimes an office will rent from an aquarium services store. They stock the tank, do all the setup and maintenance. Safer than letting the office staff take care of fish that possibly have very complex care requirements (if there is live coral it isn't a beginner tank).

Since it's a salt water tank, that dead fish needs to come out pronto so it doesn't crash the tank. I wouldn't stick my arm in there though- the person who owns/maintains it would probably freak out. Notify them right away though- salt water maintenance/care can be wicked expensive.

This is NOT a coral, LPS or otherwise. It's a mini carpet anemone.

Doesn't look like an LPS (Large polyp stony). It looks like either a giant hairy mushroom (Actinodiscus sp. or rhodactis) or possibly a rock flower anemone (Epicystis crucifer).

My vote is the former.

[–]HugeJackass 30 points31 points ago

That looks more like a mushroom coral to me (which isn't technically a coral at all).

I like to put googly eyes on all my plants. I got the idea from my cactuses. Winston Churchill once said "The eyes...are the windows, of the face."

P.S. I am aware of the mistakes in both pluralization and punctuation. They were intentional.

[–]ATribeCalledBreast 34 points35 points ago

That isn't a sea anemone. It's a mushroom corallimorph of the rhodactis genus, and is closely related to anemones and true large polyped stony corals. They have an way less powerful sting, but they are believed to release a chemical that works like a narcotic on small or sick fish that come close or rest on the polyp. Once the fish is good and sedated, it will quickly close around it like a purse string and attempt to consume it's prey. The common name this mushroom corals goes by is "green metallic hairy mushroom" coral, or some variation similar to that. A fish of that size could never be taken by this coral, and I would bet it died from water quality issues, then sank to the bottom and rested on the polyp. Remove the dead fish before it starts to foul up the water, then run some tests to figure out the problem.

It would have been sick if I had a timelapse (that could be reversed). I have been trying to get a 24/7 webcam for the tank, but there are few arguments for why that would help productivity/business.

One of those things I thought was a plant, Is now eating the biggest fish in my office tank, I did not know that this thing would eat, Or chomp, or chew, or munch or feast Oh how I wish this thing would not eat!
