Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

An Afghan man gave tea to a U.S. solider during a search operation for members of Taliban in the Nerkh district of the Wardak province, west of Kabul, Afghanistan

[–]HittingSmoke 452 points453 points ago

I love that that guy in the background is craning his head around like he's about to yell "QUIT IT WITH THE FUCKING TEA AND WATCH YOUR SIGHTS" or "HEY, GIMME SOME OF THAT FUCKING TEA!"

[–]FlyingPasta 725 points726 points ago

"No one ever pays me in tea :("

[–]d12183 127 points128 points ago

It was definitely this.

[–]VictorZA 74 points75 points ago

"Hello, China? Yes, all the tea..."

[–]Zacish 23 points24 points ago

British army do! You jelly?

[–]zoidberg1339 40 points41 points ago

[–]tommygunner91 10 points11 points ago

Interesting point here - Because water was scarce and using it in the water cooled vickers seemed a waste, urine was often used. The same for gasmasks - urine soaked hankerchief. Both worked!

[–]torridzone 2 points3 points ago

I thought the pee on a rag protected from chlorine gas because the urea would bind to the gas making it less deadly.

[–]ItsFlippinFrench 3 points4 points ago

Fun Fact, the method of using urine soaked hankerchiefs was invented by a Canadian soldier/scientist on the Western Front in WWI.

[–]Joker1337 6 points7 points ago

British army also drink tea in their tanks:

[–]Eso 67 points68 points ago

RAMIREZ! USE YOUR KNIFE TO DRINK THAT TEA!

[–]HittingSmoke 5 points6 points ago

GET TO DA GREENHOUSE!

[–]MagnusT 27 points28 points ago

That is what the second cup is for presumably.

[–]InvisiblePants 24 points25 points ago

Judging from the way he was holding it (and the fact that he's holding it in the sun, instead of leaving it in a shady place) suggests to me that the other cup is for Mr. Background Soldier.

[–]glassesjacketshirt 2 points3 points ago

holding it in the sun?? man you people are reading way too much into this picture

[–]flatsperm 23 points24 points ago

I love that the enemy is thinking, "I sure don't see anybody over by that wall," and then, "why is an unmanned wall being delivered tea?"

[–]phbohn2 13 points14 points ago

I think he's wondering what the hell the person taking the picture is doing standing up.

[–]cmself 2 points3 points ago

I bet that tea is at least 1/3 sugar.

[–]RalphMacchio 255 points256 points ago

I like pretending that the soldier is trying to grab his drink, but the other guy is pulling it out of reach and giggling.

[–]Averyphotog 68 points69 points ago

Yeah, such a smart trick to play on the guy with the gun.

[–]RalphMacchio 147 points148 points ago

The best comedians make a joke without regard to the consequences.

[–]Prufrax 119 points120 points ago

My friend has joked himself out of so much sex with his girlfriend because of this mentality.

[–]RalphMacchio 61 points62 points ago

A true hero, your friend. Never submit to The Man or the girl.

[–]crab_people[!] 16 points17 points ago

Not proclaiming myself a hero by any stretch of the imagination, but I often find myself joking myself out of sex with the gf...

[–]obilex 8 points9 points ago

That's just the nurse taking away their pee cups.

[–]theblackcrayon 22 points23 points ago

thankyou for the elaboration. too often we're shown pictures with no context whatsoever. and this is one of those pics that demands we know what was going on. as an american, i often feel quite ashamed of our behavior overseas. and while i still don't fully agree with why we're out there, this gives me some hope that we are doing some good.

[–]johnny861 22 points23 points ago

Same here. All we hear stateside is anything that is hype worthy and it is usually only negative things, which should, of course, be brought to light and dealt with. However, what we never see are the day by day happenings. It's good to know with so much bad going on, that there are some occaisional situations where there's good interactions taking place. Perhaps, with the slight hope that when the years pass, the mindset of our two nations will not be simply a matter of the evils, but of some of the humanity of those thrown into the fray.

[–]Dekar2401 72 points73 points ago

When I was in Afghanistan, I was offered chai (tea) by the Afghans all the time. A lot of them show no ill-will towards us and will approach NATO forces without a second's thought. There were definitely some that were apprehensive about us being near them, but they are, for the most part, a cordial people. One time, I was on this road with an ANA [Afghanistan National Army] lieutenant, and he was asking us about how black people all have big dicks. We were like, "How do you know about that?" He said, "You know, sex movies." My buddies and I were all like, "OH! Porn." Fuck the Taliban, they want porn.

[–]ComradePyro 16 points17 points ago

Afghanistan vets always wave me off like they didn't do shit, but I have never failed to thank a soldier for his boot miles and finger leather, so thanks, man.

[–]Dekar2401 10 points11 points ago

No problem man.

[–]theblackcrayon 3 points4 points ago

couldn't have said it better with 3 days and a thesaurus. we're all people. we all make mistakes, and at times we're all brilliant. we need to stop focusing on our flaws and start celebrating the amazing people we can be.

also, happy cake day.

[–]madplayshd 175 points176 points ago

A lot of people dont realize how hospitable most muslims are. Its actually quite possible that a man would die defending his guests. I guess in this society and geography its really important to help each other out.

[–]leek_boy 112 points113 points ago

In Afghanistan its called Pashtunwali.

Its an ethical code for afghans/pashtuns and rule #1 is:

  1. Melmastia (hospitality) - Showing hospitality and profound respect to all visitors, regardless of distinctions of race, religion, national affiliation as well as economic status and doing so without any hope of remuneration or favour. Pashtuns will go to great extents to show their hospitality

[–]8footpenguin 14 points15 points ago

Nanawatai is basically the central theme in what is probably my favorite war film of all time: The Beast (1988)

[–]quickexit 3 points4 points ago

such a good movie. replace the soviets with america and you get an eerily relevant movie for our time.

[–]tremens 2 points3 points ago

Wow, I haven't ever heard anyone mention The Beast. That's a great, great movie.

[–]YouAlwaysHaveAChoice 12 points13 points ago

There is a book called "Lone Survivor" about a team of Navy SEALS in Afghanistan. 3 of the 4 members of the team are killed, but Marcus Luttrell escapes. He finds a village, and is taken in under the rule of Pashtunwali. The men that killed his teammates actually come to the village, see him in one of the homes, and have to leave him alone. The even villagers sent an emissary to the US embassy to make sure he gets out safely.

[–]ShepardRTC 10 points11 points ago

There's an important caveat to that. Had they known he was special forces (the general term, not Army SF), they would have killed him on the spot. He lied and said he was just a normal soldier, which was supported by having a normal uniform and a shaved face. (Luttrell says all of that in the book, btw)

Pashtunwali is not extended for everyone. Special forces like SEALs, Delta, and SF, as well as CIA operatives, will probably be killed on the spot because in the eyes of the average Afghani, they bring down the missiles and the bombs on people's homes. They don't fight like "real" soldiers.

So my point is that while pashtunwali is a great thing, its not automatically extended to everyone.

[–]IClogToilets 4 points5 points ago

That was the reason (at least given) why they could not turn over Osama Bin Lauden.

[–]cwlewis 3 points4 points ago

Thats just fantastic. Shame the news doesn't speak of this quite important fact...

[–]ComradePyro 4 points5 points ago

[–]Mechakoopa 24 points25 points ago

If you don't have an Afghan restaurant near you, well, I feel sorry for you. But you can get a very similar tea at Indian restaurants as well, and they seem to be more prevalent.

As someone in my early 20s. I can say that the Animorphs series definitely played a role in who I have been and who I will be moving forward. It's the ultimate test of character. Think about it.

You're in high school. You go see a movie. On the way home you and your friends take a shortcut. A FUCKING ALIEN SPACESHIP LANDS AND YOU ENCOUNTER AN ALIEN. An outrageous looking creature with surprisingly human qualities tells you that you can become any animal you touch for 2 hours. Then he tells you that there is a truly evil alien race controlling earth. They take you over by slithering into your ear and that you pretty much are the only line of defense. He disappears. No one else sees. What the fuck do you do? How do you handle that? Not only will everyone think you're out of your fucking mind, but you could literally be giving your secret away to the enemy at any point.

If faced with a similarly unbelievable situation, I would do what Jake would do.

[–]moneymark21 19 points20 points ago

All I see is someone rewarding a camper.

[–]sgtcasey 124 points125 points ago

"Camping" in real life is actually an accepted strategy and helps prolong living.

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points ago

Basically, when norespawn is turned on, tactics change.

[–]oracle989 29 points30 points ago

Yep. Real life is not Call of Duty. What they call camping, soldiers call sense. You don't just go running around looking for people to shoot and leaving yourself exposed.

[–]admdelta 22 points23 points ago

I think I remember that game "America's Army" that the Army made that came out way back in '05 or whatever had a message that popped up whenever somebody camped that said "[Player name] is using tactics."

[–]Really_Likes_Nutella 14 points15 points ago

Wasn't that a replacement for "camping" In chat?

If someone said "Stop camping" it would say "Stop using tactics"?

I loved that game, shame they ruined it in AA3.

[–]samahh 90 points91 points ago

Guess what: most Muslims hate the Taliban more than non-Muslim Americans do (or perhaps the rest of the non-Muslim world).

[–]dirtyliberals 33 points34 points ago

Which is not surprising, given both how bad a name they give that part of the world, combined with how ruthless and heartless the taliban is, they don't care who they kill, or in what way.

[–]fireants 8 points9 points ago

And there's the fact that the Taliban ends up killing Muslims a hell of a lot more often than they do Americans.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

B..but all the redditors say we're the terrorists while arguing awlaki was a hero.

[–]dubdubdubdot 2 points3 points ago

American expansionism exacerbates problems, its not so black and white.

[–]JBHUTT09 3 points4 points ago

A lot like how most Christians hate the WBC. Most moderates hate extremists. Doesn't matter the context. Normal people will always fear and hate the crazies.

[–]chriscarrcrash 47 points48 points ago

I always looked forward to a hot glass of chai while pulling security in a friendly village.

The locals refer to it as "chai", but it's pretty much just green tea. Also, they would add an ass ton of sugar. Sometimes they would give us a handful of rock candy with it, just in case your tolerance for sweet wasn't level: Afghan.

Sometimes I miss that country.

[–]daliminator 36 points37 points ago

"Chai" is actually just the word for "tea" in many countries, and what we typically call "chai" in the Western world is a very specific kind (based on masala chai from India).

[–]fuckingfuckmonster 9 points10 points ago

green tea + table sugar = why i had to see pashtun soldiers with 2mm of plaque on their teeth every goddamn day

[–]i_is_surf 190 points191 points ago

It's a staged photo. Because when you're proned out and taking cover, you wouldn't let that guy walk around out in the open and hand you chai. The photographer is also out in the open with his back to any threats.

Regardless of that, I wouldn't drink the chai if it was my first time through that village. As others have jokingly said - but it is a reality - that he could have poisoned it or made it with piss. At the very least, you're looking at very bad case of diarrhea because the Afghans aren't really known for having good sources of potable water.

I had a friend pick up a nasty intestinal parasite from the food there. Like nasty as in he spent 3 months in the hospital and during that time lost 35lbs.

So the risk of shitting your brains out in a hole 15 times a day while being forced to still conduct combat operations and not get killed, or end up on a medevac because of what you drank, is not worth it.

[–]phapha 23 points24 points ago

Came here for the staged photo comment - had to dig deep. Is the photographer bulletproof too?

[–]Ulys 7 points8 points ago

You would be surprised to see the stupid shit war reporter sometime do for a good photo.
And as far as we know they are not being shot at. The soldier would not be looking away from his gun otherwise.

[–]thedevilsdictionary 39 points40 points ago

What if they're just using the scope to catch a view? Also, the photographer and tea man are 'under different rules' than any US soldier or government employee. It could be they are locals as well as not being paid to follow a strict procedure.

I don't think you're argument proves anything other than more background must be sought to make a decision. It looks real to me. And this is just because I've spent a good portion of my life living in the middle east and I know exactly the exhilaration this photo captures, from all parties involved. It is the obvious risk and your logical mind grasping that risk that makes this a great photo.

It's like saying a shot of a man free-climbing a precarious rockface is a "staged photo" because that's inherintly dangerous and therefore why would he risk himself otherwise? The photographers risk their lives too and deserve some credit for it.

[–]i_is_surf 39 points40 points ago

Where do I start...

First, it's not a scope on the rifle it's a sight. An Aimpoint to be exact, so he's not "catching a view."

Secondly, even if he was doing that, why would he get down in the prone position behind cover simply to "catch a view?" He wouldn't.

Third, no, they're not being paid to follow strict procedure, if they are in the prone behind cover, there is some type of threat. They would tell the people in the area (or have their interpreter tell them) to get out of the street and get down. The embedded reporters (if that's who it is) are under strict contractual obligations to do as the troops say - or else their entire agency gets banned from the embed program - so they don't screw around. The only possibility is that it's a combat cameraman that's assigned to the squad - but there again, if there is a threat, they will have their gun in their hands and not a camera.

Fourth, you never EVER let someone unknown behind you in an uncertain environment.

Fifth, this was not some "local" that took this picture and had it published... You say you've spent a lot of time living in the Middle East, then tell me how many people in poverty stricken areas of the Middle East have a DSLR, a computer, editing software, and an internet connection available to them? This was obviously either an embedded reporter or a combat cameraman.

Lastly, no, it's not like saying because it's dangerous it's staged. It's like saying I have been there, many times, and based on training and experiences, not even the stupidest "Private Pyle" types would ever allow something like that to happen outside of it being a staged photo.

[–]ilove2tri 10 points11 points ago

I've never been in the military, but everything you've said made a lot of sense to me. You've been downvoted pretty hard. I can't help but think many redditors would rather hang onto delusions rather than accept reality. Have my one tiny upvote.

[–]doneandone 6 points7 points ago

Apparently the truth is not liked around here. Here's an upvote from an army wife who just heard these words ..almost word for word from her husband about this picture.

As someone who who took over 300 photos as his squad's designated photopgrapher in Iraq, where many of the photos were sent to higher-ups for use in general distribution throughout the brigade in Iraq (actual pic is Afghanistan though) this is what I can say about these type of photos:

It's probably staged.

[–]carloscanas2000 23 points24 points ago

We realy do need to see more pics like this instead guys with rpgs and ak'74's and gore

[–]UncleTogie 90 points91 points ago

I dunno. RPGs can be funny...

[–]Weapons_Advice_Guy 16 points17 points ago

In reality, munitions like RPGs, 40mm grenades, and so on are designed so that the explosive charge doesn't arm until the projectile is a safe distance from the operator. In this case, the RPG would likely decapitate the hostage, go through the chest of the guy crouched in the foreground on the right, blow through the bottom or side of the boat, and get lodged in the mud in the bottom of the river before the charge had a chance to arm. It would basically act as a regular, if enormous, bullet.

This picture never ceases to make me chuckle

I knew it was going to be this picture. I'm so happy I was right.

[–]PhysicsIsMyMistress 9 points10 points ago

Really? Perhaps if we saw MORE gore and bloodshed we might actually stop fighting each other.

[–]Kalahan6 5 points6 points ago

Why do we need that?

So we are remember that war has a friendly side as well? Because that is essentially a lie. War is bullshit. Bullshit filled with RPGs, AK74's, innocent casualties, gore and bloodshed out of political pressure.

Here at Reddit we talk a lot about how come wars often get so much public approval. We talk about how the military regime keeps getting stronger when it's clearly very destructive to our world. We talk about why 18 year old boys are so eager to join the military and return home in a body bag 6 months later.

Pictures like this enforce the idea that we are doing good things out there. That war is a noble thing. It paints the picture that we help the population out there so much that they like us and take care of us by bringing us tea. In reality is just an the exception.

We don't need this. We don't need to glorify war any more then we already do. We need to tear it down.

[–]Zombie_Lenin 15 points16 points ago

I disagree. We need to see more rpg's and more gore. That's the reality of war. If you want pics of guys drinking tea you should watch the food channel.

[–]GrazzHopper 3 points4 points ago

I don't think we should have any more of these pictures, Americans should leave and Afghans should live the way they like there.

[–]Hoobleton 2 points3 points ago

The way they like, or the way the Taliban like?

[–]Recall_Coordinator 16 points17 points ago

Imagine an american giving a cup of tea to a chineese soldier on american soil and all of this changes light.

[–]Brave_Sauce 5 points6 points ago

If America gets takin over by murderous gangs and the chinese came to liberate them then it would be the same but nice try.

Edit: Sorry for making the same comment as everyone else I should have checked.

[–]dsutari 4 points5 points ago

If that Chinese soldier removed the self-appointed, violent theocratic government from power in my country and set up honest elections, I would not mind.

[–]tallandlanky 21 points22 points ago

I would like to think this actually has happened before. That being said part of me wonders if this was staged for a, "Hearts and Mindsesque" propaganda picture. Sigh. I hope it is real.

[–]xyroclast 11 points12 points ago

As much as it would be nice to drink it out of goodwill, it would be completely irresponsible, from a tactical standpoint.

[–]TheAznAssassinX 2 points3 points ago

The guy in the back: "Dude, where is mine?"

[–]Bashed 2 points3 points ago*

"Pause"

[–]Canadiandynamite 2 points3 points ago

The Demoman and Sniper are enjoying a nice cup of jarate together.

[–]F_A_F 2 points3 points ago

Initial reaction; "So THAT'S where snipers get their Jarate from!!!"

[–]dcgi 2 points3 points ago

af_dust2, bloody campers

[–]LetsGetFunky 2 points3 points ago

[–]Snowyjoe 22 points23 points ago*

I'm a sad person because this just looks like American propaganda

[–]phuckyouropinion 2 points3 points ago

Sweet beanie

[–]Shazamicide 5 points6 points ago

Yeah.. the kicker is that on occasion, the Afghan natives would brew their Chai with hash in it, using rock sugar as a sweetner. Dear god. I still got pictures of the results of that. I was my CO's RTO and was forced to sit with him and drink on occasion.. good times. Those people were amazingly hospitable and just as polite.

[–]megaclown 7 points8 points ago

'Tea of the poppy', you call it? Why thank yeaauuuuuuhhhhhhhhhzzzzzzzzzzzzz

[–]pear11 26 points27 points ago

It's pictures like these that renew my hope in humanity. Maybe it's the hippie in me...I'm just saying.

[–]terribru_mistake 20 points21 points ago

We need to see less of pictures of soldiers in Afghanistan or any country other than their own. Ideally less pictures of soldiers in general because killing people sucks.

[–]darwyn4 10 points11 points ago

Thanks for fucking up my country! Have some tea

[–]Bazgul 5 points6 points ago

Meilmapala or hospitality at work. One of the biggest tenants of the Afghan honor code Pashtunwali. This happens a lot more than you realize. It just isn't captured on camera. The media only takes pictures of fighting, riots, and wars.

[–]RealHippie 2 points3 points ago

Because that's a 1 in a billion rarity?

[–]pedro3131 3 points4 points ago

eh...

1) That pistol grip / bipod sucks 2) If he's really "pulling security" in an environment that contact is so likely as to merit proneing out, it's prob not time to sip some tea with the locals sitting ever so gingerly in an exposed position.

Nice PR picture though, not like any grunt's photo album from a deployment isn't filled with similar ones....

[–]burrite 8 points9 points ago

Yeah, because that isn't really emblematic of the relationship between an occupied nation and its invader.

Nice propaganda, though!

[–]Luke_Turnbull 6 points7 points ago

We all know the soldier was hoping for some diazepam, he's never gonna catch sniper wolf at this rate...

[–]7zark77 5 points6 points ago

Truth is, there probably used to be a lot more scenarios like this, but destroying villages with drones, raiding homes in the middle of the night to arrest 'Taliban' (based on intelligence from locals who have a grudge against their neighbour, who isn't Taliban) and a general weariness over the war means Afghans don't want to make tea for foreign troops anymore.

[–]offconstantly 12 points13 points ago

It's unfortunate that the soldier would probably be weary of taking a sip like that.

[–]helloskitty 34 points35 points ago

wary*

[–]lindh 10 points11 points ago

This is probably the word I most often hear misused.

[–]RunningBearMan 28 points29 points ago

The guys we escorted when I was in Iraq were always making tea and offering it to us. I wouldn't have been that concerned with drinking it.
