That's why I don't like it. They come up with crappy one-liners that try to seem cerebral, yet they aren't actually that deep because the general audience won't get them. Worse yet, where they could throw in advanced jokes for the nerds/geeks watching (futurama does this all the time, by the way), they don't out of the fear of alienating audiences.

The underlying reason that people say they "hate" the Big Bang theory is because of the unrealistic depiction of "nerds" and the constant laugh track.

I think a bigger factor in the hate is the mainstreaming of nerd culture, albeit somewhat stereotypical, and the people who once bullied and ridiculed so called "nerds" now see it as fashionable. For some reason, people find that offensive.

I for one find most of the characters in the show dull and uninspired, but that aside, Sheldon Cooper is literally my all time favourite television character. He is uncannily similar to my sister.

My sister actually has British diagnosed aspergers (the British part is important) and as a result has a hilariously childish understanding of social etiquette. I got her a gift the other day, and this is exactly how she responded...

"I suppose the correct social protocol would be to hug you." Then she hugged me while counting to three, and then released on three. No further words were exchanged.

Seriously, I think I would have recieved a more passionate hug from a pot plant.

Because British professionals have a more selective diagnosis compared to American professionals. It seems that in America if someone suspects they have a problem socialising, they see a doctor and the doctor basically slaps a sticker on their head reading "ASPERGERS SYNDROME", thus resulting in over-diagnosis and misdiagnosis. I like to compare it to kids with "ADHD".

Or, even worse, self-diagnosis. Lots of that happens on Reddit.

It really annoys me when people who are basically just shy look for a condition to blame it on.

Ahh, I see what you mean. I was unaware of that. Apparently for the DSM-V, the not-yet-released American psychiatric diagnosis manual, there could be an elimination of Aspergers, merging it with Autism Spectrum, with specifiers. There is controversy around this.

Overdiagnosis is problematic in the US, and I speculate one reason could be because we do not have socialized medicine, as you do in the UK. To be more specific, doctors get incentives to use certain medicines from pharmaceutical companies.

Well I don't live in the UK anymore so I can't really comment on healthcare and so forth, but I was unaware that they were going to merge aspergers with the Autism Spectrum in the DSM-V.

Personally, I think that's a good thing. A great thing, in fact. It would make diagnosis more clinical (therefore harder to be diagnosed) and maybe deflate the social stigma attached to it if it is considered to be a more serious psychological condition. People just don't take it seriously if pretty much "anyone" can have it. Me included.

My sister (we are British) is also diagnosed with mild Aspergers. She loves BBT, so do I for that matter. She rarely hugs, and when she does it's always awkward, so I get this a lot.

Yes. When I've seen every episode 500 times, the jokes aren't funny. See also: Family Guy, Scrubs, etc.

The only show that defies this rule for me is Seinfeld. For some reason, I still laugh at that show even though I have the episodes memorized almost word for word.

I think that's all perfectly fair. I'm not particularly interested in nerd culture going mainstream, but I also don't mind seeing somewhat obscure nerd-culture references on TV. Plus I like pretty much all of the characters, except Bernadette.

And Kaley Cuoco's hot.

Also, Sheldon's a good character, but Eric Cartman's still the best TV character.
