How is that even legal?

I work in retail, it's a big fine per box of expired medicine. Around $25 apiece. (NY)

Define "box". Do you mean per purchasable item? Or the bulk packages they are (probably) shipped in?

Item on the shelf.

I actually asked my family's doctor and our pharmacist (and a friend of mine, also a pharmacist) about this a while back, after noticing how much less some new drugs lasted, compared to their older releases.

It turns out, not all medicine really "go bad" after they expire. A lot of them, mostly syrups, should indeed be consumed strictly within the time given. Some however just "lose their edge", and simply aren't as effective after their expiration date. Their effect might not be as immediate, or you might need 2 pills instead of one to gain the same result. In some cases even, the pharmaceutical companies write shorter expiration dates so people buy the product more often. Either way, it's not something I'd like (anyone) to try without consulting a doctor or their pharmacist. Better be safe than sorry.

I hope your discount store has at least that much down :)

Came here to say this. My doctor said pretty much anything that is over the counter is safe to take LONG after the expiration. Prescription stuff is a little sketchier (prescription pain killers, for instance, can be dangerous when expired) but you're pretty much safe with anything that's legal to be sold over the counter.

Doc said the same thing to me. Most pills are fine after the expiration date, they just won't be as powerful.

Which depending on the med that can or cant be a big deal. Some meds you REALLY want to have the correct dose. Other meds, if its 10% less potent it isnt a big deal.

Pain killers, cold/flu symptom relief pills, sleep aids, or vitamins are probably all fine to take. I wouldn't dare risk it with something like birth control, antibiotics, or things like that.

I was also thinking of my parents hard medications, the dosages have been carefully tweaked and are tiny to begin with.

I would be shocked if you found anything that mattered in the box. since these are all off the shelf meds (phenphedrine, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, etc) it really wont make a difference.

Dr. Cox

Its regular strength tylenol. Here's what you do: Get her to open her mouth, take a handfull and throw it at her. Whatever sticks - that's the correct dosage

Am I the only one who noticed "2 for a dollar or 99¢ each"?

They spelled medicine right, which is management material at this place.

It's pretty common for stores to do things like this when they're just trying to get rid of stock and want it to seem stupid to only buy one of something. It's a pretty extreme example though...

[–]osin144 2 points3 points ago

I actually thought that was more startling than the expired medicine.

[–]thajugganuat 1 point2 points ago

It's so people will buy at the very least 2 instead of one and they can get rid of them.

My roommate is in Pharmacy school and he once told me that expired medicine usually metabolizes and can sometimes be something completely different than what it ought to be. He then went on a rant about how Tylenol has had a bunch of bad batches and they can't keep a control...I dunno, I'm an engineer, I don't like all this medical mumbo jumbo.

I'm a pharmacist. Don't take tylenol after it is expired. That is all.

Not all expired medicine is bad. People assume they're toxic and will/can kill you.

Usually, though, they're just weakened. I'm not saying they're not bad, they are. 500mg of a certain antibiotic may help combat an infection while 500mg of same said antibiotic once expired may or may not.

[–]saldek 6 points7 points ago

Some antibiotics can become toxic after they expire.

[–]WarPhalange 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's generally a bad idea to take antibiotics unless they have been personally prescribed from you. I've known idiots who have wanted to use my anti-biotics I got for a throat infection because they had a soar throat now. No idea if that's even the right kind of anti-biotic for the job.

[–]THNDHALBRT 3 points4 points ago

I wouldn't buy antibiotics from a discount store anyway.. :P

I once took a Tylenol from a car emergency kit that had expired in 1987. I lived to tell the tale.

Aspirin slowly breaks down into it's base parts over time from exposure to heat and light - so if you take expired Aspirin, you're essentially taking vinegar and salicylic acid pills which have no effect (except to taste bad and maybe upset your stomach a lot).

To be fair - to test the expiration date manufacturers leave a pill on the shelf for a year, then test if it still works. If it does, it gets a one year expiration date despite that it may last much longer, it's just not proven too.

The bin was full of zyrtec and children cough medicine.

Edit: I'm aware it is more complicated than this but its the short version. Moral of the story is meds can still be perfectly safe and effective after expiration. Or not, who knows. Mark it down to 50cents and let the customer find out.

Robitussin style kids cough medicine?! :O

[–]theboone 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doesn't exactly work like that. Chemists can calculate the expiration date based on the chemical reactions that the drug has with the excipients and environment.

Just never ever take tylenol that has been expired for two years unless you really love puking.

so are they 2 for a dollar, or 99 cent each? Depends on how long ago the item in question expired? can you haggle?

I wonder if there was anybody who didn't see value in getting 2 for $1.00?

Hurrr. Medicine doesn't usually go bad, unless it's some sort of liquid or chewables(throat chewables having in mind, they taste disgusting when they get over their expiration date), things also to avoid are sprays, syrups, they can cause problems when they're really old.

Everything else, pills etc. go ahead, I've had to use expired medicine quite often in my early life(pills and creams mostly), they did work fine.
