Oh my god I miss dirt jumping.

Now, I'm too old for that shit STUFF. I said STUFF.

Ahhhh, the days where the only "job" we had was to build the actual jumps (most likely in some woods you were not permitted to be in in the first place).....

Man do I miss BMXing every day with my friends. Damn everyone for growing up and moving away!

[–]_Wilfred_ 5 points6 points ago

MOST LIKELY IN THE WOODS?!!!?

That is pretty much the only option. God knows my mom would have hit me in the face with that shovel the second I started diggin in the yard. I would look like Little Nickey for the rest of my life..

[–]tinomartinez 2 points3 points ago

Haha, I was more trying to emphasize the "not permitted to be in" part of that sentence and not so much the woods.

I had lots of open fields where we would construct elaborate jumps and whatnot. Eventually our jump park was turned into houses. We just started using the lumber laying around to build a bmx course through the half built homes. It consumed our weekends, Saturday was spent building the course, Sunday was for riding. Now I noticed that home constructions post guards at night and on the weekends. Kids now can't get away with that.

Shit, same. As a former, avid BMXer, I can tell you that many shovels, time and lots of hose water went into that. Eventually had to get something with shocks. Dirt jump bikes are RIGID! My wrists are fucked. Then again, I was 28 when I stopped.

Ive got my vintage Hutch up in the attic, my son is only 16months right now but soon enough I will restore that bike for him and teach him how to make some sweet jumps.

Haha word! Was a Haro guy for freestyle and DB for dirt myself but there was always something about a pink hutch that was badass. Somebody rolls up with a hutch, you get scared, cause you know shit is gonna get real. :P

I had a Haro Master. White and Green. Sick as fuck with mags, pegs, the whole deal. Dopest freestyle bike at the time. But OH MY FUCKING GOD DID I WANT A PINK HUTCH for whatever reason. Framestands FTW!

EDIT: Damn. Now that I looked that pic up, I want it again.

[–]tuna_safe_dolphin 1 point2 points ago

Oh shit, you guys are old school, me too. I had a DB, a Skyway and later on, a Hutch freestyle bike.

I kinda always wanted a PK Ripper, those things were sweet.

[–]SourCreamWater 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck yeah! Skyways and PK Rippers with the Landing Gear forks! Fiver for you sir! :D

Did you have the super long brake line before they came out with rotors so you could spin bars? lol Nostalgia.

[–]tuna_safe_dolphin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ha ha, yep I rocked the long brake cable for the rear brake and did the Potts modification with front brake - you know, where you route the cable down the stem and clamp it to the caliber from underneath. I stopped riding right around when rotors were becoming the standard. Honestly, I don't remember rotors working well for actual braking. I always had my brakes super dialed - I didn't like riding bikes with sketchy brakes. . .

But yeah, hi fives from a fellow BMX old fart!

I was rocking a Patterson XL back in 83. Now a DK 4 pack and a 90s Haro Shredder. Thinking about selling them and picking up a mountain bike or trial bike.

Hah, grew up making jumps out of paint cans and sheets of plywood. I know better now but you gotta let kids be kids and figure it out for themselves. :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've heard of people bringing in better quality dirt, maybe you can just use it for the topmost layer to make it doable.

note: not a dirt jumper.

[–]Mktelly29 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I worked at a nursery (think plants, not kids) with a friend I ride with for about a year and we got a half yard of topsoil for jumps we were making in his back yard. The half yard which was I think $35 with our discount only made one pump roller to gain speed before the jump we had built. If trucking in dirt from other places was cheap, I'd do it in a heartbeat because it beats digging any day, but it's too expensive

[–]Hobie1Up 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even with your discount you likely paid above cost. Jump up to the wholesaler to buy the dirt direct. I haven't ridden trails in since the mid 90's (I'm in my 30s) but I have bought quite a bit of dirt. At my 2nd to last shop I needed quite a bit prior to some construction work. Shopped around on google. Most of these companies operate in the "dark ages" and won't have much of a website, if any, so you'll have to do a lot of calling to find the best deal. If you can fill/haul the dirt there are some places that sell it very cheap. I guess it's all relative though. If you're a "grown up" it's pretty affordable. If you're still in school or living under your parents roof spending a few hundred bucks on dirt might be out of your reach.

[–]Mktelly29 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I'm a poor college student so manual labor is cheaper than buying dirt. I would if I could though, it made life a whooole lot easier

My buddies and I built something similiar to this (not as impressive but close) and it was there for a good 8 years. Then one day a kid hurt himself pretty bad on them and the city decided they were too dangerous and bulldozed them along with every other cache of jumps around the city. Bastards.

[–]ajl_mo 11 points12 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't blame the city. I work for a parks dept. If someone get gets hurt on something like that and we knew about but didn't do anything about it the following takes place.

Plaintiff attorney: So you knew there were unauthorized jumps on city property.

City employee: Yes

PA: Did you inspect them for proper building and safety practices?

CE: No, they were unauthorized.

PA: But you knew about them and didn't remove them?

CE: Well The kids looked like they were having fun.

PA: How much fun is little Jimmy having with his broken neck after playing on an unauthorized, uninspected jump that you knew about but didn't do anything about?

Jury Foreman: How many zero's can we put on the end of this check?

Citizen already pissed off about potholes: So we're paying $500,000 to some kid who got hurt on something that shouldn't have been there and these dumbasses can't get the pothole in my street fixed?

[–]ZaneMasterX 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I perfectly understand the logic behind it still doesnt make them not bastards. They ruined countless hours of hard work and countless more on the fun we had on them. Being a kid and having something you worked hard on destroyed because one kids parents coddle him too much is hard to swallow. Just annoys me that they let them slid for 8+ years until they finally decided they had to go. Doesnt make sense to a kid but being all grown up it does make sense but they are still bastards.

[–]ajl_mo 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Guess the kids should have got with the parks department and built it with them. That how we got our skate park. The kids and parents lobbied the council to approve the project. The skate kids met with our staff and helped design it, even to the point of building a clay model. Then our crews built it.

The Result... a 28,000 SF skate park we got built 13 years ago.

ps we're trying to get funding for a bike challenge course next to our mountain bike trail. We'll be working with a group of the local BMX'ers and Mt Bikers on that one.

I was super excited when I found out my neighborhood said they were building a park after 15 years of people getting yelled at for skating and biking. I went there opening day in December 2009 (pretty cold in northern va) just to find out bikes aren't allowed. I've been kicked out countless times with the argument of "it's a skatepark, not a bike park." I always respond with "well you allow scooters even though it's not a scooter park". All they can come up with is "just get out or we'll call the cops.

[–]ajl_mo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bikes aren't allowed at our skatepark either. Not a good mix.

That's partly why we're looking into building a separate facility

[–]Mktelly29 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not a problem for us. Yeah the park is small, but there's me and two other kids who ride, one of them is in Florida for school, and we only ride when the park is empty and other kids are in school

[–]illektr1k 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As both a skater and a biker, I'll try and explain the reason for the rift:

  • Bikes are heavy and hard (harder than plywood/flesh) and cause far more damage to the structure than a 1000 skateboards could. This is a fact, no point in disputing it.
  • Bikes pick different lines to skate/scoot. They roll faster, have a longer wheelbase and are less agile, leading to lines which are more gradual/smoother. These lines are not the same as skate/scoot, and lead to collisions as inexperienced people can't predict them.

However, at our local spots the bikers have been embraced because when it comes to re-plying the ramps every spring (after the winter freeze has ruined the top layer) and mid summer when getting a bit worn, the bmx boys are the first there with their tool belts and fully charged cordless drills and a few sheets of ply. Or cinderblocks, concrete mixers and steel pipe. Or in this case (Queenstown, where I live, where the Gorge Road Jump Park is), turning up with shovels and utes full of dirt. There was VERY little financial support for this park from anyone, just the boys getting together and digging.

You want to be that guy, who people want around because he fixes more than he breaks. A lot of people aren't, and your prefered vehicle is a lot higher risk of damaging than what you may be worth.

This is why I've worked with my town to get legal permission to build trails in the hike/bike area. Took some doing, but it was worth it. There's a trail that has a connection to another trail along a service road, we built a fade away at the top of the hill, people have been hurt on it, but they won't get rid of it. God I love that hit. Just sailing barely over the ground down half the hill at 30+ miles an hour.

[–]ZaneMasterX -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah but when youre 10-15 years old you dont think about legal permission for the most part.

[–]Mktelly29 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

when taking off from jumps this vertical, you have to move your body weight forward to make it far enough to land on the landing. If you don't lean forward enough, you'll land short, and if you lean too far forward, you'll land on your front wheel and go over the handlebars...did it last year around this time and into the water drainage runoff on the side of the run. 45 degree water isn't much fun.

[–]a_small_thump 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is what's kept me off bmx bikes... I'm used to motocross bikes with suspension I can preload to go farther, throttle I can twist to lessen impacts, etc.

You bmxers are gnaaaarly.

[–]Mktelly29 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha the weird thing is that I'm a motorcycle racer, I just do BMX for fun and to help stay in shape. Track time isn't ever enough to keep the mechanics there so I hop on the next closest things. The body movements to move the bike in mid-air is the same for both, BMX just takes more minute changes because it weighs 22 lbs instead of 250

[–]a_small_thump 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I've heard the two are similar, but every time I try dirt jumping I wind up on my face. It's the pedals, man. They move.
