[–]unfinite 462 points463 points ago

Photoshopped. Here's the source.

"This image is a composite of 2 pictures. the picture of the sky and clouds was taken by me from an airplaine, and the shuttle is a picture from NASA. Then the assembly was done in Photoshop & Ligthroom [sic]"

For something similar, but real: link.

[–]Homesickblues 94 points95 points ago

I was just going to say how would someone photograph a shuttle that clearly?

[–]snowplay 130 points131 points ago

The photographer's just chillin atop of the clouds and the space shuttle appeared suddenly. That's when he got his camera out and got a picture of it. No big deal.

[–]diceypoo 31 points32 points ago

Suddenly, a wild space shuttles appears!

[–]snowplay 19 points20 points ago

You used camera...

[–]rdm_box 22 points23 points ago

It's not very effective.

OP uses photoshop...

[–]snowplay 18 points19 points ago

Critical hit...!!! It's super effective...!!!

[–]Dr___Awkward 11 points12 points ago

The Space Shuttle Program fainted!

[–]Gorillamusha 0 points1 point ago

The clouds would be stretched upward near the sides of the shuttle.

[–]brycedriesenga 5 points6 points ago

Maybe it was the dude from the documentary Chronicle.

[–]elseppo 3 points4 points ago

also, no shadow.

[–]godin_sdxt 24 points25 points ago

Well, they're not really moving that fast at such an early point in their takeoff. But regardless, there's no way any plane would be allowed anywhere near the shuttle's airspace during takeoff.

[–]juaquin 16 points17 points ago

NASA has several planes circling the area during launch, and they could use a telephoto lens, so the shot (though in this case photoshopped) would definitely be possible. Here's some shots from one of those planes: http://photoblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/07/09/7051164-nasa-training-aircraft-captures-unique-view-of-shuttle-launch

[–]Thjoth 1 point2 points ago

That picture made me think of Macross/Robotech immediately.

[–]marquizzo 0 points1 point ago

On that first photo, why are the bottom clouds white, and the rest black? Is that all steam at first, and the rest burnt rocket fuel?

[–]Hoodooz39 5 points6 points ago*

They are moving pretty damn fast at that point in takeoff. It looks slo-mo on TV, but in person, it is up and gone before you know it.

Also, there are sometimes military planes in the area. I've seen plenty of photos from such.

[Edited to add: The shuttle is going about 100mph right after takeoff and accelerates to 1000mph within a minute, and up to 4000mph at 2 minutes. Source.

[–]happywaffle 2 points3 points ago

And by the time it hits orbital velocity (T+8 minutes) it's going ten times faster than a bullet.

[–]godin_sdxt 0 points1 point ago

Ahh, okay. I can see why they'd make an exception for military planes. Thanks for the info.

[–]3danimator 4 points5 points ago

Well, they're not really moving that fast at such an early point in their takeoff

Still fast enough

[–]the-knife 0 points1 point ago

And from 200 meters away. They do clear the air space, and I don't think they'd launch the shuttle through a thick cloud layer.

[–]marquizzo 0 points1 point ago

What's the problem? Commercial aircraft always fly through clouds without an issue, why can't the space shuttle do it?

[–]the-knife 0 points1 point ago

Observation from below? I don't know for sure, but weren't a lot of launches delayed due to cloudy weather?

[–]mikecngan 0 points1 point ago

Also, at that altitude, the shuttle would probably be already rolling.

[–]Dorama1427 14 points15 points ago

Thanks, I thought this was a fake. Mostly because flying a plane above a shuttle launch is a damn stupid idea.

[–]fiafia127 11 points12 points ago

And actually not possible, as you'd be chased away by the air force patrol jets before the shuttle even took off. Plus, the patrol jets aren't even nearly that close.

[–]FlexorCarpiUlnaris 2 points3 points ago

Those air force jets could take the photo though. I mean, this one is fake but there were people in the air during the launches who could take a photo.

But would they have launched on a cloudy day like that? I thought they we're really picky about the weather.

[–]fiafia127 4 points5 points ago

They are more now than they were before Columbia, but there have been launches on cloudy days. Endeavour during liftoff as seen from an airforce jet, and Columbia breaking through a cloud layer. Fun fact: Apollo 12 actually got struck by lightning during liftoff.

[–]GaijinGrl 1 point2 points ago

That, and you know...the clouds. :)

[–]appleseed1234 5 points6 points ago

And... you know... the violent turbulence due to suction and exhaust that would rip pretty much any plane that comes within 400 feet into confetti.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Planes can actually fly through clouds pretty easily, actually.

[–]richalex2010 3 points4 points ago

They do launch through clouds sometimes. Or did, rather.

[–]Sthurlangue 16 points17 points ago

Whelp. Guess I'll be taking my upvote back then.....

[–]Kalorn 5 points6 points ago

Hurry now someone make Photoshops of this with the rocket in other random funny places

[–]StillConfused 2 points3 points ago

The first picture, driving down the road - you know an engineer stood there months before, looked at it, and said "What's the wingspan again?".

[–]wvboltslinger40k 2 points3 points ago

Now make them all into wallpapers...

[–]creativeintent 2 points3 points ago

This is what I came to see.

[–]Murcus 1 point2 points ago

Why hasn't this been done yet?

[–]eagleapex 2 points3 points ago

I almost cried a little from OP, but you made it better.

[–]BokehBurgher 1 point2 points ago

I was about to say, I've seen a lot of photoshops in my day, and this is most certainly one of them...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Damn, I figured it was a real photo of ground fog, but the real real photo of ground fog is not so pretty.

[–]supabass18 1 point2 points ago

Also, the clouds would have been illuminated from the intensity of the rocket exhaust.

[–]RedditorPredditor 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the buzz kill...

[–]tabret2004 0 points1 point ago

I was gonna say. There would be no way that airspace would have been allowed in on shuttle launch day.

[–]tw2522 0 points1 point ago

I prefer the fake.

[–]fernguts 0 points1 point ago

They would never let an aircraft be that close to a shuttle lift-off, so it's obviously fake for that reason alone.

[–]Agnostoman 27 points28 points ago

Launching with the window covers still in place wasn't a good idea!

[–]NeilFraser 9 points10 points ago

Not to mention the yellow "strongbacks" attached to the cargo bay doors.

[–]Crashmo 25 points26 points ago

You can't fool me, that's just a shuttle sitting in the middle of Siberia.

[–]bk553 104 points105 points ago

this is fake as shit. The scale of the clouds and shuttle are all fucked the shit up and this pisses me off.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]weirdal1968 21 points22 points ago

Another miss - perfectly perpendicular to the clouds? Every launch I watched on TV had the shuttle rolling shortly after launch and the announcer noting how far downrange the vehicle had traveled.

[–]GBFel 9 points10 points ago

Not to mention that no aircraft were allowed anywhere near Canaveral on launch day. Hell, they even cleared a huge swath of ocean.

[–]BitRex 0 points1 point ago

I believe they have a couple of fighters up there when they launch.

[–]GBFel 0 points1 point ago

Probably, but waaaaaay the hell away.

[–]biznatch11 9 points10 points ago

Also wouldn't a shuttle disturb the nearby clouds as it went through? They're all nice and perfectly organized here.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

It seems like everyone has confirmed my suspicions that it is fake. My two cents would be that they would clear the airspace. And that this would be a hard as hell shot to pull off given the speed.

Also, at first I thought it was on the launch pad with an extremely thick fog, but the actual tower is missing so there ya go.

[–]weird-oh 1 point2 points ago

Looks like it might have been taken while the Shuttle was on its way to the pad on the crawler. That usually happens in the morning, when there is very likely to be fog on Merritt Island and the Cape. It is definitely not being launched in that shot, though.

[–]blahbot90 1 point2 points ago

Nah, even then, the clouds look way too much like low altitude clouds than fog. Someone else posted a link to this. You can see the difference in formation of fog and clouds.

[–]weird-oh 0 points1 point ago

I see what you mean. Interesting 'shop job, though.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Good deduction. I thought about the crawler too, but I thought there was a supporting structure up the external fuel tank for some reason similar to the tower. There isn't, or at least not very visible at this angle.

[–]weird-oh 0 points1 point ago

The only thing you might see are the hold-down posts. They're the only thing that held the shuttle to the pad while the transporter was moving it. And even after that, come to think of it.

[–]Cheegro 27 points28 points ago

just the tip

[–]javijuji 11 points12 points ago

I came here to make sure there was sexual innuendo. I am satisfied.

[–]real_nice_guy[!] 1 point2 points ago

looks like more than just the tip to me, but what do I know.

[–]Jaraarph 62 points63 points ago

Fake and repost.

No shadow

[–]scoops22 18 points19 points ago

And gay.

[–]jeezy-creezy 2 points3 points ago

You guys get me.

[–]nickvolp 8 points9 points ago

Very fake. You can see the yellow service bars on the payload bay doors of the orbiter. They don't fly with those on. Why not use a shuttle that at least was flight-ready? Alas, I do miss those birds.

[–]murl56 5 points6 points ago

Shopped, because;

  1. No shadow

  2. You would definitely see the glow from the super-hot plasma spewing out from the bottom nozzles through even the densest cloud cover

  3. You'd never get that close during a real launch

  4. Moving fast enough that a shock wave preceding the shuttle would displace the clouds ahead of it, creating a 'hole' in the clouds

  5. I would expect at least some motion blur also - this still pic was probably taken on the launch pad and shopped into some clouds

Pretty picture though. Nice job

[–]NyghtSpydr 0 points1 point ago

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Upvote for you sir.

[–]Tashre 2 points3 points ago

No way anyone could get that close for such a clear, high res shot while it's in flight. The airspace for miles and miles around more than likely has to be completely restricted during a launch.

[–]didid_you_see 4 points5 points ago

I feel like NASA would throw a shit fit if there was anything capable of taking a picture like that anywhere near a shuttle on its way to space.

[–]polkjk 1 point2 points ago

Well, we do send chaser jets after each launch to get shots as the shuttle goes downrange. We easily have the technology at this point to make a fast enough shutter speed and high enough zoom to be able to get a shot "like this," excepting all of the inaccuracies pointed out in other posts. But, yeah, it's not impossible to get shots of near this quality at this point in the flight.

[–]AllDizzle 4 points5 points ago

If you're going to fake something like this, at least make it look fucking awesome where it's basting the clouds out of the way as it blasts through.

[–]Probablythefirst 4 points5 points ago

It boggles my mind that anyone could think this was real, and I haven't even seen it before.

[–]ProjectileHerpes 15 points16 points ago

530 Upvotes for this super fake picture. -_-

[–]Pinhedd 7 points8 points ago

reddit has gone full retard

[–]ResoL101 5 points6 points ago*

I know for a fact that you would never get this close to the shuttle on a launch. Remember when John Glenn went up in 1998?...there was a 10-20 minute delay in the launch because (unofficially) the P3 I was on had accidentally crept into NASA's airspace around the launch area and they had to wait for us to clear the area...even though we were quite a ways away. Funny to hear the flight station get softly reamed by NASA's Airspace Security though.

[–]dude_Im_hilarious 2 points3 points ago

I'm hoping an image like this will one day look like this.

[–]yourphoneisringing 2 points3 points ago

Lazy space shuttle: look at it just sitting on it's ass, not a care in the world. "I want to go to space, but I don't want to get off my cloud." What a lazy sack of crap!!!

I was at the Visitor Center for this launch. It was amazing. Didn't get any good pics, but that was fine.

[–]jojoko 1 point2 points ago

nobody seems to mention that the clouds wouldn't react like that. there would be a huge shockwave. hello!

[–]stevenjtyler 1 point2 points ago

ARRRGH! THEY TRICKED ME! Downvoted, but begrudgingly.

[–]steakbbq 1 point2 points ago

I am not saying that people think this is real, however I have watched several launches from my house in florida and I instantly knew this was fake. The shuttle will never launch into clouds like that.

Proof below taken from nasa website.

"What sort of weather is required for launch? Under what circumstances do you have to cancel, and why? Good question. I was out in Beverly Hills last week, where you always have good weather. There's an awful lot of things that can cause you not to launch. Today you may have seen, if you watched the launch, we did have a lot of cloudiness in the area, but it was high, thin clouds. Those are OK. If the clouds are maybe a little bit lower, or maybe if the clouds are a little bit thicker, I think somewhere around 4,500 feet -- there's a number that was being thrown around today -- if they're that thick, you can't fly through clouds that are that thick. You have to look at what temperature is freezing inside the clouds. And things like that. You have to look at winds, last week we had a big concern that the anvil clouds, if you've ever seen a thunderstorm, at the top of it you might see the very top of the thunderstorm shearing off in one direction, well those can actually cause hail and can trigger lightning, so even though the thunderstorm is 20 miles away, if the anvil is being blown over the launch pad, we can have adverse weather."

[–]TheMediumPanda 0 points1 point ago

Just that fact that they clear airspace for hundreds of miles around a launch site should make the OP's alarm bells go off. Of course, some people are just born gullible.

[–]SovreignTripod 1 point2 points ago

It's still a cool picture, whether it's photoshopped or not. I don't see why everyone gets so bent out of shape over this.

[–]CancerEffinSucks 0 points1 point ago

WOW! That really turned out great

[–]ALL_in_A_days_WORK 0 points1 point ago

I'm looking for penis jokes.

[–]Cubejam 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry that's blatantly photoshopped.

[–]vandilx 0 points1 point ago

The roll program is executed within 30 seconds of launch, well before it would even breach the cloud tops. The shuttle would be on the underside of the stack and flying at an angle. Also, an airspace perimeter is maintained by the Air Force. No civilian plane would ever be that close to take that shot at this point in the launch.

[–]Th3m4ni4c 0 points1 point ago

No thats just your moms dildo.

[–]schnitzi 0 points1 point ago

Though it's fake, it reminds me of one of the coolest things I've ever seen; something you geeks might appreciate --

I worked at Kennedy Space Center for four years or so in the early 90s, and got to see a lot of cool happenings and hardware. Our software monitored the loading of the liquid oxygen into the main tank, so I typically worked the ten hours or so before a launch, and got to see a number of launches.

So one time I was out for a night launch. There was some question as to whether it would launch or not, because of the cloud cover (one way you can tell that photo is a fake -- they'd never launch when it was that cloudy). Fortunately the cloud cover that night was just a thin wispy layer so they decided to go for it.

And the wispy cloud layer was what made it so awesome. Since the engines point down, the flames didn't really illuminate the cloud layer -- until the moment that the shuttle broke through them, when suddenly the whole sky lit up. Everyone who saw it just gasped in amazement.

Working at KSC was often just another crappy government job, but there were a dozen or so times like that that made it all worthwhile...

[–]paulotis 0 points1 point ago

I just tought they were like " Ah man stop. We forgot to buy some snacks lets drop by at cloud city before we go to the moon k?"

[–]juggaspartan 0 points1 point ago

america is pitching a tent.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

You would definitely see the glow from the engines through those clouds, which are not in this picture.

This is one of those times that I wish someone didn't ruin it by saying it's photoshopped.

And that's when I finished, she made me a sandwich, and went home.

That's so cool how did you take the picture

Looks so calm and serene. From this angle, you'd never know there was a raging inferno spewing out from underneath it.

No it's not. This is a picture of the sky with clouds at altitude with the shuttle (probably on the launch pad) shopped into it.

Source: I live in FL and we don't get fog like that, and I'm not a God damn idiot

Really? How is it that this was front page yesterday and gets reposted again today...I mean I am all for repost but give it a month people...fuck

[–]CTDiesel 6 points7 points ago

The site is so busy and so much content gets posted that one practically needs to be on here 24 hours a day to see everything....so yeah, chill bro. There are things I've never seen on here that people have cried about it being reported many times. Btw, ever watched the same movie more than once? Did you bitch at yourself each subsequent time you watched it?
