Now I'm depressed :(

[–]cnet14 3 points4 points ago

I know how you feel. Gotta start finding the secrets to eternal life...

[–]bcutt 25 points26 points ago

SPOILER ALERT!!

[–]exadoga 5 points6 points ago

Wait, why does it show the Atlantic Ocean vanishing? Aren't the Americas drifting WEST? It's the Pacific Ocean that's shrinking year by year.

[–]Dr_Dippy 4 points5 points ago

You are correct the most recent simulations show the americas colliding with asia

[–]lactosefree1 1 point2 points ago

Because the plates will stop moving that direction and head back whence they came.

[–]Jazzremix 4 points5 points ago

[–]lactosefree1 0 points1 point ago

no comprende senor. are you trying to suggest that my grammar is incorrect?

[–]Jazzremix 0 points1 point ago

nope. just seeing the word "whence" reminds me of something.

[–]lactosefree1 1 point2 points ago

that's funny. "return to from where you came" is what he said, which is an improper use of "whence" - whence means "from where" and is improperly used with the word "to" by many people who use it today, including whomever wrote the screenplay to LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring.

[–]Grymnir 4 points5 points ago

a lot of that was factually incorrect.

[–]stash0606 5 points6 points ago

elaborate please.

Well, the one glaring thing is that Andromeda colliding with the Milky Way is somehow going to destroy solar systems is ridiculous, the space in-between stars where we are at the spiral arm is vast, at worse an entire solar system might get ejected, but not single planets.

Another thing not mentioned is; as the sun expands it is likely the orbit of the earth will shift outwards with it.

Another thing not mentioned; Australia is headed for North America, not the Indian Sub-continent.

Also there has been talk that the orbits of the planets in our solar system may not be very stable and as the sun expands, mercury will get shot out towards Jupiter and maybe out of the solar system completely, if it doesnt hit something on its way out.(like the earth).

One final point; None of us or even our ancestors will be there to see much of anything past 2 million years from now.The maximum mammalian species lifespan is 10 million years and judging by the rate of our population growth, we are closing in on extinction really fast.

[–]stash0606 0 points1 point ago

hmm, thanks. you seem like you know what you're talking about, so if you wouldn't mind answering/attempting to answer a question. I keep hearing that the sun will eventually swallow up the earth (as shown in the gif). any truth to this? I understand when you said that as the sun keeps getting bigger, the orbits will shift outward as well, which I assume is because greater mass = greater force of gravity to keep them in an expanded orbit, so where does this sun-swallowing-earth theory come from?

Another thing not mentioned; Australia is headed for North America, not the Indian Sub-continent.

good to know.

Also there has been talk that the orbits of the planets in our solar system may not be very stable and as the sun expands, mercury will get shot out towards Jupiter and maybe out of the solar system completely, if it doesnt hit something on its way out.(like the earth).

can you expand on this a little, like how are they unstable. I mean it's essentially the sun's gravity pull that's holding everything together in this solar system right? or am I missing something? If I'm not, then how can such a scenario, like you described, happen.

One final point; None of us or even our ancestors will be there to see much of anything past 2 million years from now.The maximum mammalian species lifespan is 10 million years and judging by the rate of our population growth, we are closing in on extinction really fast.

of course, but don't you mean due to resource shortage, rather than population growth(which I guess is the cause of resource shortage)

thanks once again.

[–]Grymnir 0 points1 point ago

The stability of mercury was talked about in this article.

The resources exist for us to live here for a very long time, just not as a pre-fusion technological civilization. Fossil fuels will be our doom. I remember when i was kid(im 43 now) during late fall and winter in the south, we wore coats every day until march, sometimes after. This last year i wore a hoodie for exactly 1 week this year. Plants are blooming here 2 months early. Global warming is now, and I dont think there is any stopping it anymore. Maybe if we'd acted in the early 90's we could have done something.

[–]archonemis 4 points5 points ago

A fair amount of the 'science' in that is silly.

Treat people well now because they're here now.

[–]basec0m 3 points4 points ago

I've always liked the jump from 50,000 years to 50 million... stuff happens in between, nothing of import.

[–]fargin_bastiges 2 points3 points ago

Well, according to Doctor Who, we'll still be here at the Heat Death of the Universe.

[–]bradle 1 point2 points ago

Wasn't that the death of Earth not the universe?

[–]fargin_bastiges 0 points1 point ago

In the episode "Utopia" all stars had gone out and humanity was left on one planet. They were constructing a rocket to take them to a place called Utopia which I believe was actually a lie meant to keep society from completely collapsing. It's been a while, but I remember the episode being incredibly depressing.

[–]bradle 1 point2 points ago

Which series was this? I thought you were referring to the episode in series 1 where the Dr. takes Rose to see the end of the Earth.

[–]fargin_bastiges 0 points1 point ago

Here you go!

Series 3 Episode 11

YTMND is what I did before Reddit.

I know I'm old when I instinctively thought of YTMND. You've saved me the search.

[–]GrumpyRobot 2 points3 points ago

Interstellar space travel isn't going to happen; certainly not in the time frame they describe.

so where does the whole 2012 end of the world thing fit into this?

[–]Posixoddity 1 point2 points ago

In the words of poster honeybadger1192 this is "an old gif, but I'm still amazed every time I see it."

[–]NickaPleeze 1 point2 points ago

I just KNEW the Sagitarius dwarf galaxy was a little punk

[–]Avolition84 1 point2 points ago

I like the end note but this is mostly false. & 50,000 years to leave our solar system!?! WTF!! If we haven't achieved sustainability within the next couple of centuries our planet will die & we will die. If it is achieved we will then be able to leave our galaxy umimpeded by scarcity & truely be free to explore for eternity. In ya mouth!

[–]FauxShizzle 1 point2 points ago

More likely humans will cease to live in highly complex specialist-subsistence societies and become generalists again, after a long period of geographically-specific micro-extinctions. Our food network won't survive the next couple centuries unless we correct our behaviour, but we will likely survive as a species.

The climate will not likely get to the point that it is totally inhabitable for all humans across the globe. More likely is that our fragile and highly complex trade-dependent system will collapse well before then and the climate will have time to correct itself again. But hominines have survived severe climate change before simply because they were adapted to versatile adapting, and we basically already inhabit every niche available to us. As long as human life can survive somewhere, we won't necessarily go totally extinct.

[–]MindOfJay 3 points4 points ago

Would you say that life, uh, finds a way?

[–]FauxShizzle 0 points1 point ago

You just made my day amazing. :]

[–]WhatsGoingO_n 1 point2 points ago

ARRGHH!!! I'll be dead before we make space colonies. :(

[–]lactosefree1 1 point2 points ago

I feel so insignificant now.

[–]aruss88 5 points6 points ago

So they can tell me all this but they can't accurately predict if it's going to rain tomorrow? Come on...

[–]AmandaHuggenkiss 0 points1 point ago

This doesn't take into account 2012.

[–]FauxShizzle 0 points1 point ago

It actually does. Nothing happens.

[–]bioemerl 0 points1 point ago

I really hope that the future will be great. This gif is awesome.

[–]CharlieBrownsPipe 0 points1 point ago

Yeah...ok.

[–]snoosh00 0 points1 point ago

yeah, im sure people will be around in 50,000 years, NOT!!!

Wow, I thought I had a bad habit of speculating

[–]enigbane 0 points1 point ago

While the message at the end was nice, this was not exactly a happy bedtime story

[–]killerpat2 0 points1 point ago

That stuff is all nice and stuff...too bad I won't have to put up with it, because I'll be DEAD! HAHA!

[–]reallymadgoat 0 points1 point ago

I was so hoping that the last slide would say "and at the end your mother is still a whore."
