Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Why is Indiana Jones just standing there instead of saving them?

[–]grinr 4 points5 points ago

Indy doesn't wear a TIE! Pfah!

[–]Username20x6 16 points17 points ago

[–]grinr 2 points3 points ago

I wish I could tip at 25% for being served so well. Well done, sir!

Well that wasn't what I was hoping for

[–]MrDiller 7 points8 points ago

Obviously.

[–]BulletBilll 5 points6 points ago

Maybe you want something along the lines of r/AnimalPorn ?

[–]damoose 8 points9 points ago

this is exactly what i was hoping for

[–]Zoltrixx 6 points7 points ago

Who comes up with all these terrible subreddit names?

[–]AlienSphinkter 6 points7 points ago

[–]Conbz 9 points10 points ago

I was so disappointed that wasn't a place

[–]hytonight 2 points3 points ago

cant be long until it is.

[–]MechaKnight 1 point2 points ago

The SFW porn network includes like 30 subreddits all named that way

[–]derrick81787 1 point2 points ago

Seriously. Even though that subreddit is perfectly SFW, I'm not about to go visit a link with the word "porn" in the URL while I'm at work.

[–]Da_Real_Caboose 13 points14 points ago

I've always meant to ask how you do this? Just adjust the saturation or something? Excuse my ignorance, it's always impressive to look at :)

[–]I_COLORED_IT_FOR_YOU 29 points30 points ago

Thank you :)

I personally use color balance instead of hue/saturation. They're rather similar but I find color balance to have greater control on finding just the right color for an area I wish to add color too. Here's what my layers looked like for this particular image if that helps show the general process, bear in mind this was rather rushed. A proper colorization will have WAY more layers, as every detail will be colored individually.

[–]Da_Real_Caboose 6 points7 points ago

That's awesome! I take a Photoshop class in my High School so maybe I can try it some time. Thanks!

[–]I_COLORED_IT_FOR_YOU 22 points23 points ago

Thank you again :) Happy to help. Speaking of help, if you ever need any feel free to message me. I discovered Photoshop in high school as well (I'm entirely self taught) and it's become a hobby, which is why I've made this account. I'd love to help anyone, whether it's people who want work done on a photo, or those looking for some Photoshop tips ;)

[–]lupinthe3rd 1 point2 points ago

Impressive work! I'm courious: how so you select the areas for your layers/masks? Is it a color selection or do you cut them out manually somehow?

[–]I_COLORED_IT_FOR_YOU 3 points4 points ago

All selections are totally manual. I either use the lasso tool (freehand or polygonal, I don't trust the magnetic one), or I use brushes/eraser.

[–]ThePendulum 1 point2 points ago

Doesn't it get confusing when you need an awful lot of layers? I usually give them relevant names like male_skin, female_skirt, etc.

[–]I_COLORED_IT_FOR_YOU 1 point2 points ago

I've never gotten into the habit of naming each layer, always seemed like too much effort. If I need to locate the layer for a certain area I usually can identify it by the mask thumbnail. If not, I go through each layer hitting the visibility button until I see the color disappear/reappear in the area I'm looking for.

[–]SpecialOops 1 point2 points ago

get a photoshop book with color pallet references for skin tones apply mask and go to town

[–]GODFATHER_OF_REDDIT 10 points11 points ago

Every time I see you I'm going to upvote you. This is far more of a contribution that the stupid fucking water colorings.

[–]CornFedHonky 27 points28 points ago

Someone needs to adjust the contrast of these gentlemen's faces. That, or they all suffer from jaundice.

[–]I_COLORED_IT_FOR_YOU 24 points25 points ago

Good point. I tend to miss these things when adjusting the colors of the final piece. Thanks.

De-Simpson'ed image: http://i.imgur.com/rGPhA.jpg

[–]polezo 13 points14 points ago

You also missed a triangle of color in the sky. Top right inside corner of the pipe all of a sudden the sky looks white.

[–]I_COLORED_IT_FOR_YOU 14 points15 points ago

I can't believe I've missed this. Thanks, I've updated the image :)

[–]realhalo 6 points7 points ago

Mr. Stickler here. If you look closely there is actually another, smaller, uncolored triangle near the mountain line.

[–]SNAME 4 points5 points ago

realhalo isn't lying. You definitely missed that other little triangle right below the one you fixed.

[–]johnq-pubic 7 points8 points ago

Its a triangular cloud obviously.

[–]cohrt 3 points4 points ago

how do you do this?

[–]I_COLORED_IT_FOR_YOU 13 points14 points ago

Magic.
And Photoshop.

Actually, it's pretty much all Photoshop.

[–]a_haar 14 points15 points ago

Not even a little magic? :(

[–]ChemicalRascal 4 points5 points ago

Photoshop is magic, Bubu!

[–]ofay 2 points3 points ago

Great coloring job. It really brings the photo to life.

[–]Nuggetsurwha 12 points13 points ago

....WHY?!

[–]AcadieLibre 5 points6 points ago

To give people a sense of scale, most people need a visual picture to grasp the scale of something. It is why when people mention large items they will say it is the size of 10 football fields as most people have a sense of the size of being they are popular and most people have been or seen one at least in term of North America and I would assume they would use a Soccer (Football outside N.A.) field or pitch in most of the rest of the world.

[–]poon-is-food 1 point2 points ago

Then why is it so popular in the uk to use "an area the size of wales"?

My theory is that no one is really sure how big wales is.

[–]TH0UGHTP0LICE 128 points129 points ago

Why did we all stop wearing hats? For thousands of years up until the 60's we all wore hats. What happened?

God damned hippies, I bet.....

[–]PComotose 73 points74 points ago*

It's actually quite simple: Kennedy didn't wear them.

Ike had worn them, so had Truman, Roosevelt, Hoover, and the rest going back.

But Kennedy was setting the style.

EDIT: Sorry, should have made this clearer: with the exception of the occasions when Kennedy wore a top hat (there are numerous pix of him during the inauguration), he was never seen in public wearing a hat while he was President. It actually went back to his campaign when his handlers made certain he was never to be photographed in a hat. In fact, I believe he did wear an Indian chief's bonnet on one occasion. There's a brief passage about hats and Kennedy during the campaign in Theodore White's book "The Making of the President 1960" -- a truly brilliant piece of reporting since no one had done anything like this before ... I can highly recommend it.

[–]otherwiseguy 22 points23 points ago

[–]jolt527 5 points6 points ago

Thank you for using Snopes to clear up the BS. :)

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points ago

Cool correlation but I don't think that Kennedy was the causation. Counter culture was already on it's way in.

[–]dimdown 24 points25 points ago*

Indeed, for those previous "thousands of years" a great deal of labor was devoted to work outside, regardless of the weather, thus the hat served as necessary protection. As the Industrial Revolution shifted into gear and hats gradually became less necessary (tho' in cities like London one would wear a hat to keep the soot from one's head) the popular consciousness of the Place of Hats as status symbols gradually increased. It wasn't until the 'Counter-Culture' (now become Mainstream) of the Baby-Boomer generation, perhaps brought about by Post-Nuclear anxiety, that western society threw off it's hats along with other, less tangible, restrictions of the past. The same would go for gloves. Of course there were people like my grandfather, the cattle rancher, who wore a hat and had a ready pair of work-gloves until his death, but these kinds of jobs have diminished greatly.

[–]WhenSnowDies 17 points18 points ago

Great post dimdown.

the Baby-Boomer generation, perhaps brought about by Post-Nuclear anxiety, that western society through off it's hats and gloves, along with other, less tangible, restrictions of the past.

I'm inclined to disagree with this perception. I don't think that the Baby Boomers liberated anything. I think that they were a very manipulative generation who decided to judge everything, create several false dilemmas, and then knock down those strawmen. For instance in I Love Lucy they didn't speak about Lucy's pregnancy; why? The Boomers say it's because they hate women, are intolerant, or whatever. Ask the generation who "censored" that and they'll tell you that they respected her privacy, essentially, and were being proper. Meanwhile the Boomers give us the PC police, you can't say "shut up" with a Y7 rating, and they even gave us these TV ratings (where was that in the Lucy era?).

Politics have gotten incredibly manipulative and cruel, generally citing moral superiority and guilt tripping and/or fear to make a point rather than the point itself. I wouldn't be a politician just because I know that if they find out that I wipe my butt it'll be on the 10 o'clock news.

I know this is a diversion and I don't want to be a jerk, but I think that the Boomers were just rebelling and creating strawmen to knock down, and that they were judging everything and everybody as intrinsically bad. I don't think that hats were a restriction but just another cultural thing so that the everyman could be on the "in", or perhaps even express himself. Look at the different kinds of hats they were wearing. I don't really believe that they'd begrudge a hatless man. I think that the Boomers dramatized everything in almost a Freudian way and broke the chain of culture, basically have manipulated us for the last half century, and shattered norms replacing them with politics, finance, and excessive greed, classism, and vague judgments rather than clearly defined ones.

[–]Dream4eva 8 points9 points ago

The greatest generation followed by the worst.

[–]dimdown 1 point2 points ago

I agree I went a little out of my territory there. I don't think you're a jerk at all, and these kinds of in-depth responses, as my own, are part of the reason I love reddit. I don't want to emphasize the 'liberation' either, I think it's a misconception. I am primarily concerned with how it came about, why this undercurrent of what can be called, more or less, "revolution"? Let us not miscalculate the effects of McCarthyism and the Red Scare upon young impressionable minds coupled with the dawning realization that Humanity, for the first time, was able to render itself extinct. Nor let us under-estimate 'Counter-Culture' just because it has that awful word in it, 'Culture. For in it is contained not only the Hippies and their Drugs but also the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements, among others. I am not, by any means defending them or the principles they set forth, but it's almost like measuring the effects of an explosion, or a meteorite impact decades later as a strange radiation begins to effect the citizens of nearby towns... Whoops, there goes my mind again...

[–]otherwiseguy 5 points6 points ago*

Re: EDIT

There appear to be plenty of pictures of JFK wearing (or carrying) a hat.

EDIT: Also, think of how many times you've seen pictures of Elvis walking around without a hat. Elvis became popular before the Kennedy presidency.

[–]PComotose 2 points3 points ago

[grin]

So very true (and, you know something, Sinatra regularly wore a hat, too, back in the good old days before Elvis). You're right, it could have been Elvis but, if it was, thank the stars that sequined jump suits didn't catch on the same way being hatless did!

[–]ciscomd 2 points3 points ago

Another theory is that car roofs got lower and one could no longer wear his hat while driving.

[–]TH0UGHTP0LICE 19 points20 points ago

[–]thegreathal 6 points7 points ago

[–]bikiniduck 10 points11 points ago

Lincoln sure is short...

[–]enkarha 7 points8 points ago

He was 6'4".

[–]mainsworth 1 point2 points ago

But why did JFK stop wearing a hat?

[–]JoshSN 9 points10 points ago

I think it was the lack of horsedrawn carriages making city streets smell far less unpleasant.

I can't even imagine what NYC would have been like with 250,000 horses on a hot, summer day.

[–]sevenofk9 12 points13 points ago

Why would wearing a hat affect smell?

[–]JoshSN 24 points25 points ago

The smell gets in your hair. The hair has a lot of surface area.

[–]legion02 4 points5 points ago

I'm probably missing something, but what do hats have to do with horse-shit-stank?

[–]JoshSN 10 points11 points ago

The smell gets in your hair. The hair has a lot of surface area.

[–]tuck_fhis 5 points6 points ago

The amount of flies in the air would have made a hat a necessity to keep the amount of flies in your hair to a minimum. Also: good swatting device.

[–]finebydesign 5 points6 points ago

The rise of the automobile and suburbia greatly diminished the need for a hat. In the old days hats really served a purpose after this rise they became more ornamental.

It's not just in men, women wore hats and that ended as well.

[–]andrewcclay 2 points3 points ago

If you've ever been to the Hoover Dam, you know that their gift shop practically runs on this pun.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Where can I get some damn bait

[–]oldaccount 6 points7 points ago

More specifically, I believe they are standing in the metal lining used in the tunnels that feed water into the turbines. The tunnels had to be lined because the cavitation of the water as if flows over the rocks is strong enough to eat away at the rock over time.

[–]tkemberli 4 points5 points ago

"Four years have passed since the Republic held the Dam - just barely - against the legion's onslaught .(...)"

[–]DirtySyko 1 point2 points ago

"I just have a question. Is this a God damn?"

[–]NotMud 17 points18 points ago

Is that tube an externally visible component? In fact, what is it?

[–]Sale_of_Two_Titties 66 points67 points ago

It's a small segment of one of the 30' diameter pipes through which water flows out of Lake Mead and into the generator facilities. If you take the dam tour, you'll stand inside one of these giant tunnels blasted out of the rock and directly on top of one of these pipes. You can feel the vibrations of the water rushing through. Pretty cool.

The pipes were too big to be transported, so they were fabricated at the dam site.

[–]Afootlongdong 154 points155 points ago

I don't understand why you're so angry about them being fabricated on site.

[–]Sale_of_Two_Titties 36 points37 points ago

[–]supermegaultrajeremy 11 points12 points ago

They use this joke liberally on the dam tour.

[–]Antagony 1 point2 points ago

When I was a kid my friends and I used to go and watch a hillclimbing event at a local dam. We would always edge along one of the dam's steps until the guy with the bullhorn shouted at us to get off the dam wall. Cracked us up every time. :^)

[–]Atario 1 point2 points ago

Not the workmen.

[–]GeneralWarts 1 point2 points ago

It's funny you should say that. I was going to put "executives" but then I realized what you just said and they really could be anyone. Although the guy with the white beard and 3-piece seems to be of some authority.

[–]Fidena 2 points3 points ago

Back when everyone wore suits, beards were the identifying factor of authority.

No Chinese were involved in the construction.

"Mongolian" (Chinese) labor was forbidden by the construction contract

[–]chili_cheese_dog 1 point2 points ago

[–]LiveStalk 10 points11 points ago

Pretty amazing what can be done in only 4 years when you don't have to worry about your workers.

[–]hobbit6 5 points6 points ago

And when supply for labor grossly exceeds demands so you can get away with paying them next to nothing. What was unemployment then? 25%?

[–]Fidena 3 points4 points ago

Go talk to construction workers and ask them what they think about adding more red tape.

[–]captainolimar 19 points20 points ago

It was a great time, if you were white and a man. I know there are parts of the past that look better than today, but we've made some pretty great strides since then.

But... I am white and a man. It's very disappointing.

[–]gaqua 1 point2 points ago

I'm also white and a man. Not gonna lie, it's pretty awesome. Like being born into a pretty cool club of guys who will only get turned down for a loan because of bad credit, and who cops will only stop if I actually do something stupid.
