I recently sold something on ebay, I make a little side money doing this. Today, a guy messaged me about an item I had for sale. I listed it at $55.00.

His message was "I will give you $30.00 for this item, since a similar one sold recently for $25.00. I think that is the best offer you will find."

He sent his message 8 hours AFTER the item was sold for $55. I had the prestigious honor of writing back saying... "sorry, I would consider your offer, but unfortunately it already sold... check out my other fine wares.

Felt like I just punched the Pawn Stars guy in the face.

I sometimes understand where he is coming from. If I have to buy stuff, there is an inherent risk- it may never resell, it might sit on a shelf for a year, it may be broken or not working. I buy stuff in bulk- because I'm willing to sit on it waiting for it to sell, and the person I'm buying it from wants cash now. Am I a middle man? yeah.. but about 80% of people are.

I dislike Pawn Stars because:

A: they never, ever show what they paid for it, and what they sold it for B: a lot of their stuff brought in is fradulant (history museums/ trade shops frequently "loan" them items short term for the show) C: he low-balls everything, and is kinda an ass about it.

I mean in my case, the guy was being a jerk by saying this was the "best offer I would find" not knowing I was an expert in a very, very niche industry (specifically buying and reselling Warhammer models, if anyone cares)

[–]iamesauce 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Looks like Rick didn't buy someone's Warhammer models..

[–]notjawn 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hey the Warhammer model resell business makes tens of dollars every year!

[–]redbeardo 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's actually pretty big, since the models are expensive, so the reselling black market is gigantic. There are a few companies that focus on selling models and other similar stuff- Dicebucket, Hoards of Bits, and quite a few professional painters. It's not my day job, but it gets me some free stuff. I would love to move up and open a game store.

[–]DrunkmanDoodoo 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How is the painting aspect of that industry? I know buying low and selling high is the middle guys source of income but how much more is a well painted model compared to a blank model? And do you think the good painters can make enough money to justify the time and patience required to do such a thing?

I was thinking about painting those as a hobby and I like hobbies where the end product can be sold if I turned out to be proficient in it.

Do you know a website that would be a good reference on how to make the terrain? I am actually slowly developing my own tabletop game and terrain forming and painting seems to align with something I am already doing and what I think would be a fun hobby (painting miniatures).

I don't paint at all, being a shitty painter. I actually just buy in bulk and re sell it. However, you can sell an awesomely painted model for 2 or 3 times retail price, sometimes possibly more. It really depends on the level of quality you can churn out vs. the time spent. There's also some level of competition.

[–]DrunkmanDoodoo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That sounds pretty much what I was expecting. I love the lore and epicness of that game but I have never played the actual tabletop. Just Dow and Dow 2 and Space Marine for god knows how long.

Would be great to paint some characters and maybe even sell them if I actually end up with a good finished product after $10,000 worth of working on them.

All my other hobbies as a child were almost impossible to monetize without being super gifted and dedicated. Such as skateboarding and playing the drums and making my own music. Well you can theoretically make money if you are better than the other 10 million other people who also skateboard and play music.

Thanks for the reply!

[–]redbeardo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, $10,000 is quite a huge chunk of cash. I've only sold over $2500 annually, but that's revenue- profit can be really slim there. I just like collecting stuff, and not selling everything to build up my armies. Some people may get some good money on the side painting, but very few are going to be able to make it a full living.

[–]DrunkmanDoodoo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was just a number I threw out there on the cost requirement to actually get good enough at painting characters to be able to sell them. Say I have been painting miniatures and spent around 10,000 in paint and miniatures and still am not proficient enough to sell anything then I would throw in the towel and accept that I suck at painting miniatures.

That number should probably be much lower for my own good now that I think about it.

[–]Dymero 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you're selling it at a pawn shop versus some kind of Warhammer exchange, that may be true. Maybe he doesn't typically get a calling for Warhammer models. So his offer to you will be lower because he'll sit on it for a while.

Rick often gets riffed on for his repetitive catch phrases, I know, but what he says is often true. The Internet age has made a lot of people think they know everything about commerce, when they really only go by the first price they saw their item going for on eBay, which isn't the price something it actually sold for. But they think it is and go into the pawn shop with unrealistic expectations.

Real life pawn/buying and selling is a mix of what you see in Pawn Stars and Hardcore Pawn. People are not typically at each other's throats like in HP, but neither is it the kind of linear, predictable setup that PS is.

Source: My parents run a pawn shop and, like Rick, often have to explain the same kind of things to people selling.

[–]redbeardo 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I understand why he has to low ball, but sometimes he's just being a dick about it. I don't care for the show too much though, after they were caught trading items.

What I really hate is Storage Wars. That show is incredibly dumb, and while I'm a noob at buisness, I cannot believe how these people are doing anything sensible at all. They overvalue a ton of crap, and it's quite obvious that most of the guys had no idea what they were doing.

Too bad the entire show is fake. As in, there's a fine print notice before or after the show that says everyone in it is an actor and the entire show is scripted. I don't know how people can't tell by the horrible acting... it's like people that think the WWF is real.

I'll give it a shot...

I think this is hilarious as well but it is hard to pinpoint why. For me, I think it is the sheer ridiculousness of the photo. It makes it seem like this (assumed) businessman is having the time of his life on his cell phone doing (assumed again) business-related things. It looks like the picture (without the text) is taken right out of a Marketing 101 textbook as well, which makes it funnier in my opinion.

[–]bw1870 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, the fact that it's a stereotypical stock photo used for generic marketing/business related brochures and websites is what makes it funny to me. Things are always super fun and exciting and interesting in those shots and this captures that ridiculousness.

If you want to make an offer for something on ebay, tell the seller you would be ok with just a paypal transaction, ie not done over ebay. the seller saves 10% of the item fee and is more willing to accept a lower offer as the net price they would receive from you would be either the sam or higher. As an eBay seller myself, I wouldn't gamble with my account status for a few bucks. All it takes is for the buyer to be less than 100% satisfied for whatever reason and you could get torpedoed. eBay is very anti-seller nowadays and they shoot first, ask questions never.

[–]ya-ya-oh-oh 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

well thats you i suppose. i believe things can be sorted out in a friendly manner and i would let the buyer of my item know this in no uncertain terms before the transactions went ahead, with full contact details available.

[–]denizenKRIM 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you can buy and sell things through paypal with buyer and seller protection. if the person you are buying from has a poor feedback score, then obviously avoid. its your own judgement and your own risk, and we all know that in order to gain something it must involve a degree of risk.

Serious... 9% on eBay then 3% on PayPal. Freaking nuts. I didn't realize it was this steep until recently. Would have just craigslisted the thing and would have made an additional $100 after postage savings...

[–]ScottCarmichael 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't like fees...but trust me - I've dealt with a couple shady buyers/sellers over the years (not many in the hundreds of transactions, but they do happen) and getting money via Paypal and doing all communication via eBay is about the only way you CAN protect yourself from getting ripped off.

I don't know how Craisglist endorsers can honestly say they always have a good experience - random internet people are just far too shady to trust. eBay/Paypal policies/hurdles keep everyone in check.

That said, when eBay removed the ability for sellers to leave negative feedback a few years ago, everyone I knew who used it to sell stuff (including myself) stopped. A system is no good without equal negatives/positives on both sides.

[–]aron2295 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cna they still give you a point for being a good buyer and a negative point for flaking and what not? i bought a couple items on ebay and i think i have 2 positive points and 0 negative ones. Anyway, i sold a few items on craiglsit and its not that shady. The biggest issue with craiglsit is that youll either get spammed a lot, people will lowball you, stop writing after showing intrest in the product and youll only get a couple people who acutally want the item and are serious. Ive met the buyers in a Mcdonalds or a grocerystore parking lot and take cash only. its been good so far.

[–]zugman 1 point2 points ago

Craigslist is always a pain. People never show, never follow up with you. I've listed things for free and people email asking if I can deliver it to them 40 miles away!

Ebay and PayPal, despite the outrageous fees, is much easier to deal with. Let people bid the actual market place value for an items instead of getting lowballed all the time. Plus actual seller and buyer protections in place.

[–]fassaction 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As an avid seller on craigslist, i totally agree it IS a fucking pain in the ass....but after dealing with high fees, waiting for money to be released to my account, and dealing with the whole ordeal of having to ship things....I stick with Craigslist.

I use only a "junk mail" email address that I strictly use for Craigslist sales, and I use a secondary google voice number for making calls, that I only use from my computer. That way I am not getting calls from these people or have people try and return something...I can block them and screen calls, and the only number they have is a number that can only be answered from a computer.

If I get some dipshit that wants to low ball me, I just dont answer the email. I only meet them in public, and since I live close to a big shopping center, I make them call me when they are there and then I will meet them. That way I am not waiting around for some assclown to show up, or giving out my address in the event that the person is shady.

well....maybe that is a bit of work. Now that I think about it.

[–]zugman 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I generally only use Craiglist list for really large items that people can pick up locally. Everything else is on eBay. So much easier than trying to arrange times to meet, waiting for followups. Just post an auction, wait for it to finish, and drop it in the mail. The post office is a block away from me so it's really simple.

[–]GloriousMatt 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually it's 12% on the first $50 on ebay, then 6% after that. Paypal is 2.9% on everything + 30 cents. So yep, it's fucked. Their margin for profit is bigger than most people that sell there. Paypal also sets up the seller to be scammed, especially for international shipping.

"I never got the item."

"I sent it! You know I sent it! You had me email you the day I sent it!"

"Ah, but did you get tracking/del. confirmation???"

"Well...no. It was a $10 item. That would have been extra. I can't even charge more for S&H like I used to to cover eBay fees. I was trying to save $!"

PAYPAL: "We are taking money out of your account immediately and refunding it to the poor, unfortunate buyer!"

[item arrives 2 days later to buyer (due to slow shipping), no one ever knows]

[–]sapo916 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you can't ship it with via first class with delivery confirmation (which is now a free addon) then it's not worth listing as that shipping starts at a buck something. For some reason I find eBay claims to be nicer than PayPal ones.

[–]ScottCarmichael 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All I'm saying is that in the past (3-4+ years ago), you didn't HAVE to have delivery confirmation/insurance/tracking/etc.

I remember saying that a person could have that for an extra $1...and 9 times out of 10 the buyer wouldn't want it.

It's gotten to the point now where you can't even put in a "general" S&H amount (so you could recover listing costs) and you HAVE to get confirmation - not because buyers want it - but because eBay/Paypal automatically says you're guilty (until proven innocent) if the buyer says they didn't receive an item.

It's just a never-ending hassle now if you try to sell on eBay. You can do it, but I recommend against it.

[–]sapo916 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I'm actually a top rated seller on eBay and since they started to charge seller fees on shipping now you may as well just make everything free shipping since that gets you promoted in the Best Match search. Honestly, there is no real other way to handle this situation other than requiring at least delivery confirmation. If the buyer claimed the item didn't arrive and the seller said it was shipped even though there was no proof then how do you solve that in a fair manner? I do hate how PayPal just automatically holds money in your account as that feels like they have too much power.

[–]ScottCarmichael 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's actually what I did as well - I make the base price higher and build in the free S&H but don't even bother with shipping costs anymore - I think I choose "Regular Ground" or whatever and don't even give people an option. Too much hassle. I also turn off international bidders and make any Buy it Now the pay immediately kind. Shipping overseas/internationally rarely works well.

Yeah - and Paypal started doing that "hold money until item arrives/buyer leaves feedback" crap the same time they removed negative feedback from sellers.

[–]sapo916 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you sell a good amount of volume on eBay I would most definitely ship internationally. I personally have less problems with international buyers than domestic buyers and they easily makeup 30% of my sales. I have sold clothing, iPhones, and all that without issues to Europe, Australia, etc. Recently eBay made it a little easier on sellers in terms of feedback, international buyers cant leave you DSR on shipping time and cost. You can also get negative feedback for duty fees removed if you mention you aren't responsible for those fees in the listing. Along with other revisions that favor the seller.

I'm an intern in the E-commerce department at a Chevy Dealer, so eBay is pretty much my entire job. My first listing was like this guy combined with a college freshman meme- "Sells something on eBay at first internship"... "I AM THE FUTURE OF THIS COMPANY!!!"

That's what I do too, SausageMcMuffin. Recently in the past month, I've sold a $1 pocket knife for $18, a $12 safety razor kit for $41, a (several dollar, can't remember how much) WWI-era bolo knife for $127.50, and other small random shit that's at least doubled what I paid. Takes some of the strain off of being unemployed.

You know, Pulp Fiction starts off as this odd, Travolta comeback indie flick where you have a hitman, some cheesy dancing and a close encounter with an overdose...

...AND THEN HALFWAY THROUGH YOU GET THE PAWNSHOP SCENE AND BRUCE WILLIS GOING PSYCHO WITH A KATANA.

That...is an amazing movie. NO ONE could predict what was gonna happen in that film.

But then once you get going, you have those special kinds of fuckers that don't pay and don't communicate. Repeat offenders, too, that apparently eBay couldn't give any less of a shit about despite the user's negative feedback and cases you've opened in the past with them. They make me want to go all mafioso and break some thumbs.

About 2000 I had someone offer to give me a couple of dozen 486s. I was going to turn them down, but I figured I'd check eBay to see how much they were going for. Even though they were useless, people were inexplicably paying around $100 for them not including shipping costs. I could tell a couple of people had no idea what they were buying and I felt kinda guilty... but I got over it.

[–]n17ikh 8 points9 points ago

Some old industrial control software (usually based in DOS) will only run on 486-era systems, so even today those machines go for good prices on Ebay.

[–]ScottCarmichael 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah - running/in good shape 486s are still selling well. A lot of collectors like them too, especially if you have the original documentation/box/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc.

The worth of something is what one fool is willing to pay for it.

[–]ScottCarmichael 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not "fool" - 486s are good collectible items AND can be potentially useful, if you have old stuff you want to use on non-emulated/newer software/hardware.

[–]ScottCarmichael 0 points1 point ago

I don't think that's the expression. "Fool" is not part of it.

"It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it."

I did some sys admin stuff for my ex girlfriends uncle. He bought all new desktops and monitors for his Architecture firm, so I set up his domain and got everythign working right.

He had 11 P3 computers that he was going to just throw away, so I asked him If i could have them. I had a Windows XP volume license key, so I wiped them all clean and did fresh installs. In 2006, I was able to get 150 bucks a pop for them on Craigslist. A small startup company bought them for their users until they could afford to get some newer hardware. Got about 1600 bucks for them, not a bad haul on top of what I got for doing the job.

Keep in mind eBay AND Paypal (that's right, BOTH) charge you a % fee based on the final value of your auction-style listings (this includes shipping costs.)

For fixed-price auction fees you pay a 50 cents insertion fee PLUS a % fee based on the category (VERY IMPORTANT) you listed it under and the final value it sold for. Pro-tip: Electronics category is the cheapest fee starting at 7%.

[–]FawmahRhoDyelindah 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I had a video game that I knew would sell for say, $30, would you recommend using BuyItNow for $30, or auction it starting low, like $6? (There's a chance it could go into a bidding war and I could come out selling it for maybe $50)

Which would be more cost-effective? And can you use categories mistakenly? (For example, listing the game under Electronics, as you mentioned)

[–]sapo916 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not going to sell for $50 if its worth $30. I sell a lot on eBay and if it sells above average being in the same condition don't expect more than 20%. Anyway use ebcalc.com to check your fees. It's probably cheaper to sell as a BIN so I'd do that.

I didn't know an Ebay calculator existed. Such a simple concept I should have realized one was out there. Much thanks!

[–]NoOneNeedsToKnow 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do an auction-style that includes a BuyItNow. I always just set shipping to free since your fees will include shipping into the final value regardless (so calculate the estimated shipping beforehand and incorporate it into your price. "FREE SHIPPING" always looks better on an auction.) The only reason a shipping price option is there is eBay USED to not charge sellers fees based on shipping. So you used to see things like people putting shipping costs at $20 but the item costs only $1. It could also be for if you use the shipping cost calculator but 1) the calculator is usually inaccurate and 2) the costs never varies unless you are shipping internationally or something very heavy. Anything light (like a video game) most likely can ship by USPS First Class (under 13 ounces) where it's a flat-rate based on ounces across all zones where as USPS Priority takes zones into consideration.

Auction-style listings are FREE to list (you get 50 free auction-style listings a month) so even if it doesn't sell the first time you lose nothing and can just continuously relist. Auction-style listing fee is a flat-rate of 9% of based on final value. Category doesn't matter for auction-styles - so it is in your benefit to list under correct category and if possible, to put it under the exact game you are selling so that it is easier for potential buyers (who are usually unfamiliar with eBay) to find your game. There is also usually free bonus offers when you list the category under the actual game you are selling like free small text (puts text under the title of your listing - making it easier to see and you can add a small detail to lure buyers like "Pristine condition!")

If you don't use auction-style listing, it is possible to list your category incorrectly by "mistake" - no one is going to come after you for "breaking" eBay rules unless you are cheating them out of a lot money.

My first sale on Ebay got embarrasing...

I moved in to an apartment with a wide door to the patio. After a few weeks it turned out that door was leaky, so my landlord fitted a new door right away. Kudos to him!

A year later I sold my sofa on Ebay.

Turns out the door my landlord fitted was a few inches narrower than the original one.

Buyer shows up and we had a good laugh trying in vain to make the sofa fit back out the door and no other way to get it out of the apartment. I was mortified!

In the end my hero landlord showed up and removed the new door and frame and refitted it afterwards. No charge!

Talk about embarrasing. But my landlord rocks.

The first time I sold something on eBay it was an old ski jacket that didn't fit me. The buyer sent me an incomplete address so I couldn't ship the package. I emailed him a few times to get the correct address but the only thing I heard from him was some positive feedback he left saying he received the item and I was an excellent seller, A+++ etc. I still don't what the fuck happened there, but it was awesome. Free money is cool.

Until the person claims the box was empty or some other scam and Ebay and Paypal don't bother looking at your proof and the person gets to keep your stuff AND gets their money back. Yeah Ebay is fucking AWESOME!

[–]WildfireFox 5 points6 points ago

I'm kinda surprised people still use eBay. No offense, but they kinda monotized it so that it usually costs the same to order something on eBay as it does from other stores on the internet. And if you go to one of those other stores, you don't have to wait several days to see if you won the item or not.

[–]sapo916 5 points6 points ago

Most of eBay is actually buy it now and there are plenty of deals left on it. Auctions are mostly for used stuff and the only online site that can compete with it that area is craigslist.

[–]FaZaCon 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ebay is big for selling used goods. There's a huge market of consumers that don't care for buying new or the latest thing, and will settle for used item if they can get it cheap.

Though, I do agree, most e-tailers sell at rock bottom prices cutting out the middleman and brick and mortar costs passing major saving onto the consumer for brand new items.

I once had an auction going for a used second generation media player that sold for $70, which was insane, since Amazon was selling a newer model with more features, brand new, with a warranty for $65.

I've also had items up for auction that I was selling at firesale prices, literally giving a portion of it away for free, and was never able to sell it.

Consumers on Ebay are so cheap, it works against them.

Want cheap 12V LED bulbs for your car? As long as you don't mind waiting 2 weeks to get them it's a killer deal. I'm talking a pair of 1156 LED bulbs for $8.50 with shipping. 102 SMDs on each 'bulb'. I put these in my reverse lamps and now it's like I have HID floodlights back there. I live in a forest so this keeps me from backing over small animals and/or cliffs.

I should add that I have found bulbs cheaper than this seller but there has always been a problem (one DOA, another set were dead shorted and started smoking...) so I stick with them. But in defense of the other 2 sellers they made it right. One sent an outright refund through paypal and the other asked if I wanted a replacement and I accepted.

[–]aulter1688 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So you can just pop this in like they're normal bulbs? What's the legality of that?

[–]OuttaSpec 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

AFAIK, there is only one restriction at the federal level involving automotive bulbs and that is replacing incandescent headlamp bulbs with HID bulbs. The idea is that a reflector that is designed for an incandescent bulb will cause an HID bulb to glare oncoming drivers.

You may have local laws that regulate other bulbs (type, wattage, lumens...) but I've never been hassled for it and I have 2 cars with them. If the CHP leaves me alone then it's probably alright.

[–]ScottCarmichael 1 point2 points ago

The main reason people buy/sell on eBay is because it's STILL the only all-in-one place where you can find a ton of old/out of stock/no longer being made things.

You don't go on eBay to get the latest movie or videogame - you go there to get the limited edition Ninja Turtle figure that stopped being made and sold in stores 15 years ago.

[–]ResidentWeeaboo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or you could list something with the correct shipping value, then after selling it, have eBay take their final value fees off your shipping portion too so you lose money when you quote the correct shipping price.

eBay used to be a lot of fun. It was like one big country-wide yard sale. It had a wonderful sense of community. Then the businesses and scammers moved in and everyone got jaded. I actually have a little side business going on eBay, but I'm thinking of shutting it down. Not worth the hassle. 90% of the "customers" are annoyingly insane and eBay sides with their unreasonable complaints and demands 100% of the time.

I hate it - but there is no viable alternative.
