I'm just gonna go out on a limb here and really question whether it's a fear of holes that makes people freak out.

In my experience what people are experiencing is a fear of bodily infestation. This image along with those doctored images of hive-like structures in skin suggest something living in the flesh; this ties into urban legends of people going on trips to Africa / South America and coming back with a painful rash only to discover it's some indigenous insect or spider living on them or the woman with the beehive hairdo that dies from a black widow spider nesting in it - or - the oft repeated "factoid" that we swallow seven spiders a year in our sleep (none of which are true).

tl;dr: it's not so much the holes that people are afraid of, it's the idea of an alien organism infesting their bodies that freaks people out

Hey everyone trypophobia is not a medical condition. It's not even a phobia. A phobia is an irrational fear. This picture and the imagery associated with this picture are very similar to ailments such as bacterial infections, rashes, or parasites. It a natural human response to experience anxiety and any other seemingly irrational reaction.

It is disgusting, but just because you (secretly want to) say you have a phobia doesn't mean it's an actual thing. It's just disturbing, and the feeling that EVERYONE gets when they see images like these is rational and normal.
