As cool as these pictures are, I doubt Paris would ever change a lot of their city from the 19th century architecture that's there today. That is unless Paris gets wiped out in WW3 :(

[–]soopercooper 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually we do not quite have it figured out. Our population will start growing and developing which means much higher energy needs. Think of how development will effect the people who currently use very little energy. Renewable energy technology in its current state is not nearly efficient or practical enough to meet these needs.

[–]rasputin777 3 points4 points ago

So why aren't you using it? Oh yeah, it's because it would literally make everything you ever buy cost five times as much and starve poor people.

Paris hasn't changed much from the 1700's, there's like 1 skyscraper in the whole city.

[–]jorgander 123 points124 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People thought by 2000 we would have flying cars and teleporters. I guarantee in 100 years Paris will look almost exactly the same as today. In 1000 years it may look different, but still nothing like the pic.

[–]txmslm 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

in 1000 years, Paris may well be destroyed rubble and futuristic cities imagined by OP's image may well be in places like Beijing, Mumbai, hell, even Africa, the Middle East, South America - so much depends on politics.

[–]gsfgf 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There will almost certainly still be a city there. I don't know that much about Paris, but every city I can think of exists for geographical reasons. However, it it is very likely that Paris 3000 is as dissimilar from Paris 2000 as Rome 2000 is from Rome 1000.

[–]LetsScoreSomeCake 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not Las Vegas! Talk about building a city that eschews all the natural advantages of location that any other settlement enjoys like access to water or other natural resources.

[–]Vitalstatistix 36 points37 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Say what now? Paris today is extremely different from Paris in the 1700s, thanks to Haussman's renovations.

Edit: But yes, there is only one skyscraper (Montparnasse) and it's not particularly high compared to other cities. There are many tall-ish buildings though over in La Defense, which is several miles to the west of the city.

[–]aberrantgeek 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dropping knowledge! It does seem like Paris didn't hop on the international style band wagon with the monolithic towers. Perhaps a different sensibility with many buildings that are older than America. However, the Eiffel tower has been the tallest thing in the city for over 120 years which is an eternity for americans. When the Eiffel tower went up Las Vegas and Miami didn't even exist.

[–]Vitalstatistix 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are very strict building height codes (121 feet max) that were put in place in the early 70s after the construction of Tour Montparnasse (which most Parisians think is an eyesore). But in the past few years there has been much discussion about how strict they should be enforced, and obviously there are different codes for La Defense, where there are many buildings taller than 121 feet.

[–]Kujara 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

La defence isn't part of Paris, hence the different code. (It's part of Puteaux).

[–]Cayou 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hah. AJA que la Défense n'est pas une commune à part entière. Merci reddit !

[–]happy_otter 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It "sits" on 3 different cities actually : Puteaux, Nanterre and Courbevoie.

[–]goretooth 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think its pretty cool having La Defense so far from the city. The cluster of tall, modern buildings is a nice change from Paris' usual beautiful architecture. Because its so far away it is both separate and one with Paris.

Not sure about the French view of it though.. Im sure they see it as an eyesore

[–]Vitalstatistix 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I got the impression when I lived there they were fine with it for a couple reasons: as you said, it's far enough away from the city center so you just see it in the distance (if at all), and also it's the business district, so a lot of people work out there. Parisians understand that there has to be some kind of business district, so this is probably the best possible situation.

[–]gahane 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is. They relaxed the height restrictions for a while so someone built it (Tour Montpernasse sic). Then they saw how bad it looked as reinstated the restrictions.

[–]Paultimate79 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Awesome art.

I think at least three hundred to five hundred years would be more accurate. And that is assuming their are a few MAJOR development projects in that time. Huge buildings arnt changed to such a degree in such a large spread area like that in modern times. In the old days it was much more viable to do it because large buildings were much more rare, so tearing down a block cost a fraction.

Now, if today we build an entirely new city from scratch on undeveloped land, I think it would look even more 'futuristic' than what is portrayed in this image. Useing modern and practical ideas you see in some of the buldings designed in the last 10 years, one could imagine how an entire city that is fully thought out from the start to its outskits would look (as opposed to the center being much, much older that the outlaying areas, and designs spanning 100+ years). For one, a lot more plant-life and a hell of a lot better use of building tops (prime real-estate).

Now I fuckn want to play SimCity.

[–]Fourtone 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought 100 years was inaccurate as well, and came looking for a discussion.

It makes me sad that I will never get to see humans do all the things from science-fiction films and games like Mass Effect and shit, and the best I get to see is fucking 3D TVs.

Due to an elaborate pre-industrialization tunnel system of sewers, the ground beneath Paris really isn't strong enough to support modern skyscrapers. Thus why it hasn't changed much in the last hundred years.

So no.

[–]fdtm 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a futuristic vision of the future. Because it's fiction, it means there's freedom to make up excuses why it can work -- like explaining that the ground beneath Paris was reinforced or renovated or fixed in some way or another.

So yes.

You are free to debate how far in the future this image might represent, since 100 years is probably a little unrealistic for a lot of change. But it's not a "So no." situation just because of the title of a reddit post that probably has nothing to do with the artist's work inherently anyway.

[–]bachrock37 3 points4 points ago

There are so many historical preservation areas in Paris. No way in fuck could this ever happen. They still have buildings from the 12th century in Paris, like fuck it's gonna look like some Half Life 2-LOTR regurgitation.

The oldest building in Paris is, believe it or not, Nicholas Flamel's (of HP fame) house, which was built in 1407. Here. But yeah, there are basically a zillion building codes that aren't easy to get around.

"In the year 9595, a race of deformed turkey was developed by chicken scientists as revenge against his bird brother. These turkeys would exit the womb doused in gravy -- gravy filled with the giblets from a monkey. The French craved it, and as a result, turkey became the only food source for France, which is now called 'Robofrance 29'. I was later killed by the chickens! So, of course, you can see why I'm angry at those chickens.

That tower reminded me of the Great Eye, and I thought this was what Mordor would look like thousands of years after Sauron led the orcs to victory and eventual technological advancement.

i know this is supposed to be fictional but, Paris. Really? What about this cityscape makes it seem distinctly Parisian? no Eiffel Tower? I would think more like NYC in the future with the WTC looking towers in the background.

OK I totally love this painting but 100 years from now is totally unrealistic. How about 350 years?

I guarantee you that Paris will look exactly the same as it does today.

Somebody can correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe Paris has very tight laws and restrictions over what kinds of buildings can be built, especially those around the Eiffel tower. They are very concerned with preserving the skyline and making sure that Paris continues to look surreal/ romantic.

Isn't Paris built over extremely weak bedrock (as well as a large network of catacombs)?

I'm sure I've been told that's the real reason they don't have so many skyscrapers in Paris.

Of course, if this was QI, it's possible I'd be getting a klaxon right about now.

[–]webauteur 1 point2 points ago

That is not how Paris looks in 2112. I should know, I'm a timelord, Le Seigneur du Temps.

Actually the French have a law stating that now skyscrapers be built inside of the actual city, montparnasse is the only one, and they felt it was so ugly they should make a law preventing it from ever happening again.

[–]ThePhenix 0 points1 point ago

Do not like. I am going to buy some land and keep it green. Unless they build skyscrapers around me. In which case I will go on a rampage. Spraying the skyscrapers with moss.

It's a nice picture, but what makes it identifiable as Paris, except for the sign on that one building? In regards to this picture, you could slap on the name of any major city with the caption "[city name], one hundred years from now".

The city was mostly deserted after the H9-N6 plague of 2038. The city sadly never recovered fully from the event leading to the decision to convert it into a museum of the French History from 5th century CE to 21st century CE in the year 2050. Hence, a hundred year from your time it looks nothing like in the picture.

Bleh. As neat as it looks, I'm hating the dystopian vibes I'm getting from this. It looks almost "Blade Runner"-esque, which is part of why I dislike it. Too depressing, too run-down, and overall rather an unpleasant looking place.

As much as I wish this could be possible, isn't it highly unlikely in a 100 years?

Kind of reminds me of the setting for the book "Toys" by James Patterson. There's a place for the suburbs of humans, and there is cleaner, safer, more important buildings for the Elites.
