Just because the writer deserves credit: This is from the Washington Post Style Invitational contest that asked readers to submit "instructions" for something (anything), but written in the style of a famous person. The winning entry was The Hokey Pokey (by Jeff Brechkin, as written by William Shakespeare).

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

If Jeff Brechkin is a redditor, I invite him to join in some /r/bardspeak fun.

For knowledge of this subreddit, kind sir, I do givest thou an upvote.

Check out user ShakespeareanVersion and subreddit /r/proper as well

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ShakespeareanVersion, unfortunately, only has 3 comments in his history. Otherwise I appreciate the heads-up. It was kind of fun to read those 3 comments.

I count myself among the, what, 12k subscribers to /r/proper. /r/bardspeak is in the same vein, in that it's about fun with the language, but really technically follows a stricter code by virtue of being based on the works of one man.

Credit, where credit's due, the writer kept the Iambic pentameter, when a few forsooths and verilies would do.

It's called the Hokey Cokey in England.

Wonder why it's different elsewhere.. connections to "coke"?

[–]mrnicelupe 24 points25 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We Brits are a bunch of fucking cokeheads. Each one of us is a drug baron.

Fun fact: I don't know what a drug baron is, I assume it's a dealer, unless there's some kind of drug feudalism.

[–]Deddan 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's better than a drug knight, but not as good as a drug earl.

[–]pterid 4 points5 points ago

I'm a drug Marquis myself.

[–]Jay180 2 points3 points ago

Also better than Suge Knight, but not as good as Steve Earle.

[–]Kerbobotat 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A drug baron would be a man in control of a particular area of drug distribution, He may hold this area of his own accord, if he himself has the manufacturing capacity for the particular drug of choice for the area, but this is rare.

Usually, drug barons will owe their allegiance to one Drug King (Or Kingpin) who is the chief manufacturer and supplier of the drug. And although two barons may be vassals of the same king, they are by no means friends, infact, the King usually encourages competitive behaviour, and cares little about petty territory squabbles, as the barons are usually willing to outpay their rivals to control a majority of the supply, effectively cutting them off at the source.

The Barons are entitled to attend the Great Council, a meeting of various drug suppliers and distributors where they can set prices, mandate certain restrictions on the drug trade(No heroin sold down by the docks, as that hooks the longshoremen and ruins the smuggling business, etc) that they are all willing to agree to, in exchange for relative peace between gangs.

I hope that helps.

Just two more important points, local dealers are equivalent to knights; they are retained by the barons to keep the serfs (addicts) in line.

[–]LunaCumberbitch 0 points1 point ago

No, what they do for fun is get upset because while this is funny, Shakespeare would have put it in to his signiture sonnet form or at least used iambic pentameter!

*The Hokey Pokey*
Shakespearean Style

O Proud left foot, that ventures quick within
Then soon upon a backward journey lithe.
Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:
Command sinistral pedestal to writhe.
Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke.
A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.
To spin! A wilde release from heaven's yoke.
Blessed dervish! Surely canst go, girl.
The Hoke, the poke -- banish now thy doubt
Verily, I say, 'tis what it's all about.

You don't say. Shocking.

[–]colormestupid 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The last two lines break the meter though.

[–]Penleg 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I noticed that...but even Billy Shakes cheated a little bit

[–]colormestupid 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup. He typically used it to emphasize moments that were more important or needed some sort of emphasis... So I guess it makes sense in this context that the last two lines break meter. :-P

[–]bloodsoup 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He didn't tend to break meter in his sonnets, though. But seeing as this hokey pokey thing has only ten lines I guess he ain't going for a sonnet.

[–]sh19 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you're able to systematically identify variations in the meter, then it's not so much "breaking the meter" as it is a complexity in one's personal metrical style.

Shakespeare was most strict in his sonnets and allowed a great deal of variance in his plays. The penultimate line is undeniably borked due to a lack of syllables, but the final line is viable. Grammatical words don't strictly need to follow stress rules, so we can place the 5th stress on the first portion of "about" and write off the second half as extrametrical. Alternately, we could argue that the middle syllable of "Verily" is elided out.

The thing that stands out most to me is the use of " 'tis" followed immediately by "it's", since the former is the vernacular's form of the latter.

[–]colormestupid 0 points1 point ago

[–]JoosMoose 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not all sonnets have to be in iambic pentameter. A Shakespearean sonnet often is, but it's not universal.

[–]sbchapm 3 points4 points ago

They do need 14 lines, however.

[–]zombiebunnie 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, I was like, wait a second... that's not iambic pentameter!!! Then I questioned my choices in life, and how I got to the point where that annoyed me.

[–]MLBM100 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]eriwinsto 2 points3 points ago

[–]Alexander2011 2 points3 points ago

[–]factoid_ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It wasn't perfect though. He cheated on the iambs several times. that's Ok though, because shakespeare rarely wrote in perfect iambic pentameter.

[–]jook11 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If it wasn't in iambic pentameter, it wouldn't be in the style of shakespeare.

for instance- the orient? my pakistani parents used to tell me when i was little how romeo and juliet was written a few hundred years before Shakespeare was born and is most likely from the persian empire

Was it just me, or did anyone else find Shakespeare to be the single most annoying thing that anyone could possibly read? (for non-english majors to answer)

[–]M3le -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Always hated having to read Shakespeare. If you have to explain every line Then it's not worth reading.

[–]brningpyre 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's when you think about what you're reading, and work to understand it.

Not everyone likes Shakespeare, no worries.

[–]Alexander2011 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not meant to be that way, and it's usually not Shakespeare's fault when it is.

Shakespeare to me is like the magic eye books. If you could figure it out you loved it but if you could not it was infuriating.

Edit: "Ha ha ha ha. You dumb bastard. It's not a schooner... it's a Sailboat"

Yeah god forbid literature force me to use my brain. Lemme guess your favorite movie is Friends With Benefits?

[–]ageeksgirl08 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not every person is going to like every genre of literature. For example, in high school we read The Great Gatsby and Tuesdays with Morrie. Most people hated the first but loved the second. I hated Tuesdays with Morrie with a passion, but I did love Great Gatsby. Tuesdays with Morrie made me want to stab my eyeballs with a rusty spork.

I enjoy fantasy and historical fiction. Does this mean that I'm stupid or uncultured for not enjoying cut and dry biographies?

As for Shakespeare, I, personally, do not enjoy reading his works. But I do enjoy seeing the stage versions. I am a visual oriented person. It's easier for me to grasp the meaning of his works.

So, please, don't be an ass. Just play nice and realize everyone has different tastes.

[–]sbchapm 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This comment indicates that you're smart since Gatsby is brilliant, and Morrie sucks balls. Great big sentimental BALLS.

[–]ageeksgirl08 2 points3 points ago

I am so happy someone shares my opinion. Some of the literature that is forced on kids in school is absolute rubbish. And 95% is some sort of tragedy. Having depression and reading tragedy after tragedy just made high school miserable for me. I now tend to only read books with at least a semi-happy ending. I need good juju in my life, FSM darn it!

[–]sbchapm 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but you also seem to just like good stuff. Gatsby isn't all that sunny at the end, but it's great.

[–]M3le 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its not that I dislike having to think, I just hate that every English teacher thinks they know what he meant. The over dissecting of literature really makes me queasy, given I am a science guy. By the way my favorite movie is stand by me.
