I've seen this gif so many times and just now noticed that the kid is steering for the girl after he knocks her over. Way to see it through.

How would we handle Pinterest?

Seriously though, Pinterest is like a secret weapon in the art of getting a girl. There is a reason all the girls eat it up. Just get on there, find something your girl or your soon to be girl would like and surprise her. I am pretty sure Pinterest was started by a clueless guy who wanted to be able to see inside the mind of women a little more.

[–]ReallyGuysImCool 59 points60 points ago

I'm pretty sure we all already knew women loved cats, cupcakes, and Ryan Gosling

[–]CeruleanOak 3 points4 points ago

No, they like that you can "read their mind" and catch their "subtle hints". Pinterest is the GAME GENIE of the Game of Love!

[–]DFP_ 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Going on a website to find out someone's likes and then surprising them with that knowledge is a surefire way to get labeled as a stalker unless you're insanely attractive, but with that in mind this effort is unnecessary.

[–]Lucas-Elzie 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never said use Pinterest to find out what the person likes. Just use it as a medium to find something that they would find sweet or romantic. It's like a cheat sheet for women, not a stalker sheet. I'm sure it could be used as a stalker tool but I didn't mean to use it in that context. Damn it..you have ruined Pinterest for me..

[–]no_puppets_here 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's okay. I understood what you meant. Like talking to her friends to learn something that you wouldn't know just at a glance. Like a favorite restaurant or band. Not her bank PIN or anything.

[–]Stevor1984 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They don't even have to have a PinInterest account though. There is a gold mine of stuff out there that most girls would love by default.

[–]nullprod 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You'll notice that's not what the poster said. The suggestion was that you already know the person you're interested in well enough to have a rough idea of what they like. Then you go on Pinterest and find something that would make them happy/interested. For example, if your love interest enjoys crafting, you could find a nice project somebody else posted.

[–]HollowNinja 4 points5 points ago

Judging by the popularity of Twilight, the more of a stalker you are, the higher your chances of getting laid get.

So it's like a visual bookmarking tool separated by topic? Doesn't sound that bad, though it seems some overly macho people are giving you downvotes and upvoting that idiot who went straight to the "gay seal".

Ah well, that's reddit. So afraid of anything that might perceived as girly

[–]Knappsterbot 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a nifty little site, and I like the layout, and it's got some good content too. I can understand that it's not for everyone, but it's hardly earned any of this ire directed towards it.

[–]suddenly_ponies 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"it's hardly earned any of this ire directed towards it."

Like most things Reddit hates (Nickelback, Rebecca Black, Beiber, Ponies, etc).

There's a lot of undirected and unfounded hatred here, but I suppose that has to do with the age and sex of the average redditor. I have to confess, that at that same age, I probably would have been part of the problem.

[–]Knappsterbot 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very true. While I don't like to hop on hate-trains, I will admit I don't understand why MLP appeals to 18-25 year-old men. You seem to be a fan, would you mind explaining?

[–]suddenly_ponies 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ha! I have an ENTIRE ARTICLE that explains it.

But mostly it's because it's an excellent cartoon. I mean think about it, aren't there a lot of really excellent cartoons around that adults watch? Phineas and Ferb, Avatar, etc?

People's biggest problem with the ponies is what they used to be (frilly, girly, and dumb). If I told you that they were bringing back Care Bears, but their world was invaded by aliens and they fought back with powered suits of armor wouldn't you give it a try?

Sure, MLP isn't full of mechas, but there's a deep story, rich world, well developed character, wonderful animation, top-notch voice acting (which is where many otherwise great cartoons really fail), and CONTINUITY.

I get that some people will look at it and not care at all and that's cool, but it's frustrating when people (not you ;) just hate on it based entirely on assumptions.

[–]Knappsterbot 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Goddamn it. I'm going to watch this show. I do love good animation, it just struck me as so bizarre that a show aimed at little girls would appeal to men my age. But, I will watch a few episodes, and come to my own conclusions, like I did with the Twilight series. THAT'S RIGHT REDDIT, I READ THE WHOLE TWILIGHT SERIES. I didn't like them but I did read it all before I started telling people how bad it was.

Also, gentleman, scholar, etc. for including an ENTIRE ARTICLE.

[–]mikedawgx 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's 4chan where you get roasted for anything less than telling bitches that they're hoes. On Reddit you still get upvoted for being romantic, even if it is "beta". But you get "ultra gay" seals too.

[–]suddenly_ponies 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Lol! Well, I stay for the mature ones then :)

[–]jimmysilverrims 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm just a bigger fan of intellectual discussion than anything else. On Reddit you'll get AMA's and TIL's. On Pinterest it's all cat pictures and the internet equivalent of magazine clippings. It just really seems to lack depth.

An yeah, I know Reddit can get really stupid sometimes, but it seems to recognize that, to be able to make fun of it's upboats and baconing narwhals. Pintrest doesn't seem to be able to make fun of itself when it's shallow and just tries to play it off as part of the site.

[–]eekthebat 19 points20 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand this all or nothing attitude, like you have to be either on Reddit or Pinterest. I happen to piss away a lot of time on both sites, and they're simply not comparable. Pinterest is literally a personalized image pinboard. That's it. Reddit is a forum that is largely fueled by its comments and discussions on anything from news, philosophy, people seeking advice, images, and anything else you can think of. You can enjoy intellectual discussion, and enjoy easily navigable, constantly updated images of things like home decor and cooking ideas. Apples and oranges.

[–]Tulos 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand this "giving a shit about how other people choose to spend their own time" thing.

[–]Knappsterbot 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You put it into words better than I could, thanks.

[–]jimmysilverrims 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. As I have said, there's no real point in comparing them. They're simply aiming for totally different things. And trying to put them in "masculine" and "feminine" boxes is equally fruitless.

[–]MildManneredFeminist 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm just a bigger fan of intellectual discussion than anything else. On Reddit you'll get AMA's and TIL's. On Pinterest it's all cat pictures and the internet equivalent of magazine clippings. It just really seems to lack depth.

There's a difference between saying that something isn't what you're looking for and saying it has no value. I fucking love harmonicas, so I listen to folk music. I don't listen to heavy metal and get pissed that it doesn't have harmonics.

[–]jimmysilverrims 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wasn't saying the lack of discussion was something to get actively upset over, it's just something that I value and a reason I'm not too into the site.

As I have said, this is a matter of subjective opinions and taste. I was merely positing my personal opinion and reasons for forming it.

[–]pwndnoob 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Though when my heavy metal has harmonicas I jump in joy!

[–]funkypenquin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Um .. Look up the wizard by black sabbath. Ozzy rocks the harp on it. I know that is not the point but it is ozzy + harmonica

[–]dolorsit 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly, this is a ridiculous comment. What you see on Pinterest can be filtered by topics. I use mine for art and design inspiration. You are comparing two completely different things.

[–]jimmysilverrims 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm merely voicing my personal preferences. There's nothing on Pinterest that really sparks my interest, although I acknowledge that this is not the case for everyone.

I understand that these two things are wholly disparate and I understand that comparing them, particularly in such pointless "masculine"/"feminine" terms is a complete waste of time.

I was merely stating which of the two I preferred and stated my reasons for doing so.

[–]suddenly_ponies 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It seems odd to me that people would relate the two. Pintrest seems like a tool more like Flickr or Facebook than Reddit. Maybe I don't understand it fully.

[–]Knappsterbot 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I totally agree, it's not as in-depth as reddit, and that depth is why I love reddit. But when all the links are purple or I'm just sick of the circle-jerking, I don't mind a little shallowness to kill some time.

[–]jimmysilverrims 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Enh, to each their own, I suppose. There's no real accounting for taste. It's really just a matter of how you want to kill time, really.

It started out as a small site with not many servers and they're having to accommodate for a lot of unexpected growth. They gained millions of users pretty quickly and as such, they've had to try to cut down on growth a little.

[–]no_puppets_here 0 points1 point ago

If you see something you like, you click repin, and it bookmarks it for you for later. Great for baking and DIY projects.

If you have friends on it, you can follow them and pintrest will you show each of you what the other has bookmarked.

I work for a wedding company that does silk center pieces for example, and I enjoy baking and nail painting. I have boards, or book marked sections, for wedding stuff, baking, and beauty.

I don't entirely understand why people hate Pinterest so much. Sure maybe a lot of people post "stupid" things. But I use it to create moodboards and inspiration boards like this for design and I think it's actually a really great resource. If you follow people who have similar interests, it's amazing.

[–]KarmaKramer 16 points17 points ago

[–]the_setlist 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that's why so many people look at Pinterest and say it's stupid. I would think it was stupid too if I looked at the front page and saw shitty scrapbooking pictures and tips on how to clean. The usefulness of Pinterest comes from making an account and following people with similar interests. It's also a great resource for saving sources of things you like.

[–]GingerSnap01010 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But the first time you sign on to reddit its 'shitty' too. You make an account and customize it for you. Why do they feel this is any different?

[–]bouncycastles 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess IF you followed people with similar interests... but during my short stay, I followed my real life friends and I had to sift through 30 pictures of uninteresting wedding/cupcake/fashion junk to find something I'd like to repin. I'd just as well follow people on tumblr if I wanted to look at graphic design and illustration.

[–]DeepRoast 1 point2 points ago

I'm technologically inclined and I still don't understand pinterest. It's basically just a photo swapping site right? That allowed metadata tags?

Heeeey, let's reinforce gender divides!

[–]HollowNinja 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are you implying that gender differences aren't natural? Because science has shown that men and women actually do prefer different things, and you can't force one gender to act like the other.

[–]mizunocaitlin 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are natural differences between the sexes. However much of Pintrest doesn't reflect those fundamental differences. Instead, it reflects primarily the social constructs we have made. Cooking and baking, for example, has been given a female or feminine connotation. If you think cooking is girls only, r/food would like a word with you.

[–]AdonisChrist 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

true, but to label things as being "for girls" or "for boys" is pretty near the definition of sexism (just add in blatant discrimination if the subtlety of dividing things into acceptable groupings isn't quite enough.)

[–]AdonisChrist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

thank you. I'll get right on that.

[–]HollowNinja 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If that's sexism, then nature is sexist. Men and women prefer different things based on their gender. People are born into a gender-specific mindset. Boys choose things that are "for boys" and girls choose things that are "for girls" naturally. Ask David Reimer.

The notion that boys and girls only prefer different things because they've been taught certain behaviors doesn't really hold water. Gender is a major, unalterable biological difference between two groups of people (unlike things like race and religion).

That said, the notion that either group is superior to the other or should hold more rights than the other is backwards. Men and women exist to fill different roles, and science backs that up. If that's sexist, then sexism is a good thing.

[–]AdonisChrist 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not arguing that.

I'm arguing that not all boys and girls conform to such behaviors, and it's in a way discriminatory to them to label such behaviors as being for boys or for girls.

In the end, I'm arguing semantics. I'd be pleased if folk said masculine or feminine activities instead, 'cause you can have a feminine male and a masculine woman, but people start getting confused, and thus angry, when you start talking about boyish girls and girly boys.

I signed up for Pinterest and within moments literally died of boredom. Literally.

(And I'm a gay male, you'd think if any male would like it it'd be me right? But it's like Tumblr without any flavor.)

[–]katenoe 0 points1 point ago

I'm redecorating my house and I have all of my ideas sorted onto a neat board that my roommates can also post their ideas on and then I have separate boards for recipes I want to try and DIY ideas. I like it because it's freakishly organized and has a lot of ideas that I otherwise would have never thought of and it brings me enjoyment the couple of times a week I visit the website. I don't get the whole "Reddit war on Pinterest". It's a website and I find it useful. If it's not for you, stick to what does interest you and stop judging others over what they enjoy.

[–]StarTrekMike 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think of pintrest as a female thing, I just see it as another useless social website that allows you to mash all of the things that make you who you are into a unrecognizable slush of meaningless garbage.

So, was Pinterest created with girls in mind, or is this just what ended up happening? I remember seeing links to it all the time and finally clicking one and being like "huh. This is the girliest thing I've seen today." Not the interface itself, but the content. Granted, some of it was kind of cool, but I can't see it having much appeal for guys.
