Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Mirror of OP photo and second, closer photo. Looks like we killed the site OP's picture was on.

[–]alphtrion 43 points44 points ago

while we're at it, here are more pics of young Hawking: http://imgur.com/a/fbj3A

[–]HeyThereMary 32 points33 points ago

In the first picture he looks like a young Tom Riddle.

[–]Hyro0o0 9 points10 points ago

I wonder how his computer handles parseltongue.

[–]ItsTobias 6 points7 points ago

I am sure there is a python joke in there somewhere.

[–]AverageMuslim 3 points4 points ago

[–]divinesleeper 2 points3 points ago

There is an alternate universe somewhere out there where Stephen Hawking grew up to be a gifted evil wizard.

[–]PneumaticPtarmigan 5 points6 points ago

Oh god, it's Sylar!

[–]shadmere 3 points4 points ago

I love it when university dress makes people actually look like they're wizards.

[–]cauldcuts 3 points4 points ago

Before his face became so disfigured and contorted, he was quite handsome.

[–]ArsenicAndRoses 0 points1 point ago

I'd hit that. One of the smartest guys in the world and cute in a nerdy buttoned up way? Yes please.

[–]jokes_on_you 180 points181 points ago

There was a TIL about his personal life yesterday. Fukt up stuff. His first wife (the one in the picture) had an affair and considered both suicide and cutting off his life support. He ended up marrying his nurse, who was the ex-wife of the man who designed his speech program.

[–]deaconbrody 14 points15 points ago

Keep it the reddit way and blame it all on the wife he left for the nurse. I suggest you read original material from the time he actually left their home.

Does he have to have been wronged? Can't Stephen Hawking just be a player? At least grant him that.

even the smartest most brilliant men in the world....one weakness, women...god help us all...

[–]DoorMarkedPirate 33 points34 points ago

You might not want to look into Einstein's history with women if this seems bad.

[–]sacman 59 points60 points ago

Ex-wives = Mistresses * Cheating squared?

[–]cdigioia 31 points32 points ago

I honestly have no idea what this is referring to... A little help, please?

[–]ThisOpenFist 23 points24 points ago

The world's greatest living scientist is socially impotent and you're surprised?

[–]tophercurtis 113 points114 points ago

Stephen Hawking admitted in an interview that he considers women to be the greatest mystery in the universe

[–]couk 41 points42 points ago

THIS JUST IN: WOMEN ARE PEOPLE TOO!

[–]MechaToast 10 points11 points ago

And people are confusing! Especially people of the opposite sex.

[–]beelily 67 points68 points ago

Which is just the kind of jokey sexism I wish were less socially acceptable. Haha, women. Not even a physicist can understand 'em! He is 70, and so obviously grew up in a different era, but it still bums me out to not be able to wholeheartedly admire someone who has done such amazing things.

[–]ahoy1 103 points104 points ago

I agree with you on this. Women aren't weird mystery robots any more than men are, and to paint them as such only contributes to the whole "women are just crazy" myth.

[–]Khaze 81 points82 points ago

I like how both you and beelily are getting downvoted. No seriously guys, women can't think like normal people. They're completely irrational.

ಠ_ಠ

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

Hawking said he considers women to be the greatest mystery in the Universe.

That isn't the same thing as saying "women are impossible to understand mystery robots." It's simply saying "I have a hard time understanding women."

It seems to me he was trying to make personal commentary and a self-joke, considering his past with women, rather than trying to make social commentary.

[–]EmperorNortonI 13 points14 points ago

Yeah, but Stephen Hawking isn't an objective third-party observer of women (like he is in physics), he's a man. A man who has had his fair share of love-life complications. It's not condescending or unfair for him to say he's confused by women.

[–]klarth 25 points26 points ago

A position better expressed with "I, personally, have trouble with women" than "women are the greatest mystery in the universe", no?

[–]El_Diablo_Blanco 2 points3 points ago

but it still bums me out to not be able to wholeheartedly admire someone who has done such amazing things.

TIL it is impossible to separate somebody's shitty personal beliefs with their life's work.

Because a lot of actors, musicians, scientists, ex-presidents, explorers, and athletes are terrible fucking people. And yet, somehow, I enjoy these people for their accomplishments in their respected realm, and not for their shitty opinions or personal beliefs.

I wholeheartedly admire Stephen Hawking, the Physicist. I honestly don't care about the guys personal opinions, I'm not sitting with him at the bar throwing back beers. Are you?

[–]heiditron 6 points7 points ago

there will always be things about the opposite sex we don't understand. it's not sexist to say as much.

[–]--Rosewater-- 36 points37 points ago

Take his comment and replace "women" with "black people", "gay people", "trans people", or any other minority of your choosing.

Sounds kind of backwards now, doesn't it?

[–]beelily 18 points19 points ago

You're right, it's not sexist to say there are things about the opposite sex you don't get. It IS sexist to say "women are the greatest mystery in the universe."

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Why?

[–]Trashayshay 48 points49 points ago

Because men and women do essentially the same things, but women always seem to be called mysterious, inexplicable, confusing, erroneous, backwards...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

You get that the idea of a "mysterious woman" originated in a very different culture that well defined gender roles, right? Outside of basic biological needs, men and women did not do the same things. And whether you believe it or not, in this older culture, calling a woman "mysterious" was as much a compliment as it was a insult.

Our culture has changed and many gender barriers have been broken down, but men and women are hardly the same. Many young American men grow thinking that young American women neither masturbate nor defecate. This is because some young American women avoid letting any male know that they do either of these things in an effort to seem "classy" or to avoid being as "crass" as men.

These are, of course, generalizations. But, they're applicable over a sizable enough population to say that there are some women who create mystery, intentionally or otherwise, that flummoxes some other men. But, none of this is universal nor does it imply that men don't create their own mystery that flummoxes women.

[–]Trashayshay 0 points1 point ago

Sure, I get all of that, as do you. So it's not really mysterious after all, is it?

[–]blow_hard[!] 15 points16 points ago

Because it's part of the mentality that women are irrational temperamental and over-emotional, which makes it really difficult to be taken seriously when you're displaying a genuine emotional response. It's what makes people say 'oh are you just PMSing?' or 'stop overreacting' when women get angry.

[–]Sickamore 25 points26 points ago

That's funny, considering women are as easy to understand as men are.

[–]TheIndigoSky 51 points52 points ago

I think your ability to empathize with the opposite sex is greatly influenced by the types of relationships you have with them. It seems by his history that Hawking had a troubled and complicated love life. I don't think it's a matter of being easy or hard to understand, it's a matter of people able to see things from another perspective.

[–]Baconoflight 0 points1 point ago

As J.F.K. put it, "Man is the most extraordinary computer at all. But women are even cooler."

[–]linearcore 3 points4 points ago

You have introduced me to a whole new world. It's just so beautiful.

[–]voracity 1 point2 points ago*

oh man, that whole Dana Gould video is hilarious

[–]jurble 10 points11 points ago

Not Newton! His greatest pride at the end of his life was the fact that he managed to maintain his chastity. He claimed it was one of those mind-over-matter things, you know.

But other people speculate it was because he was gay, and homosexuality was illegal (and Newton was too cowardly to actually try and bang some dudes on the down-low).

[–]SuperShamou 3 points4 points ago

Nerds don't get the women now, they didn't get them in the 1600's.

[–]vernonboy1984 4 points5 points ago

[–]marvinjenkins 3 points4 points ago

Funny story not my though. A friend and his girlfriend saw him in amsterdam red light district wheeling around looking at prostitutes. A couple of years later they saw him in seattle, at the space needle. Before they left they talk to the bartender beacuse they saw them talking and said that they saw him in Amsterdam red light district. The bartender then says that stephan asked him if there was any good strip clubs around town.

[–]ChadwickHenryWard 5 points6 points ago

Why is it surprising that a famous and influential physicist is a normal human who does normal human stuff and has normal human qualities?

[–]MafiaPenguin007 25 points26 points ago

Because he's not a normal human, in case you couldn't tell by the wheelchair and paralyzed position and speech synthesizer and being-a-genius-ness.

[–]CowboyNinjaD 2 points3 points ago

My uncle is a professor at a law school in the Boston area. About two decades ago, he left his first wife for his high school girlfriend. And a couple years ago, he left his second wife (the high school girlfriend) for his college girlfriend. Now he's pushing 70 with two alimony payments. I'm not sure what the status is with the college girlfriend, but I know she was also married, so that was another whole clusterfuck.

Anyway, smart men don't necessarily make good decision when it comes to women.

[–]ShakespearInTheAlley 0 points1 point ago

The world moves on a woman's hips. The world moves and it swivels and bops.

[–]pjgamer77 6 points7 points ago

I actually believe he was the one who had the affair if I'm not mistaken, and his wife was so angry she left him outside for one night.

[–]jokes_on_you 5 points6 points ago

She was having the affair first, but you're right, so did he

[–]goonbay 2 points3 points ago

His 2nd wife also abused him and it's why he divorced her

[–]Trolls_RES_Users 71 points72 points ago

At least the nurse was hot

[–]FishWash 21 points22 points ago

I think you troll everything users.

[–]Anus_Blender 33 points34 points ago

Excuse me miss, but are you a Wizard? You have negative down votes.

[–]--Rosewater-- 32 points33 points ago

Free your mind, Neo.

[–]deityofanime 13 points14 points ago

There is no downvote.

[–]Cat_Party 7 points8 points ago

Im curious about that as well.

EDIT:: NOBODY TOUCH IT!

[–]nanto 9 points10 points ago

Occasionally reddit will add meaningless votes. This is to fight spam and is in no way shape or form a bug. Sometimes the site goes down to fight spam too.

[–]KingToasty 15 points16 points ago

Yes, but negative downvotes? It's like having negative debt.

[–]pineapple_catapult 2 points3 points ago

I think negative debt is the part of you that credit card companies own, which they then go on to use for their own self benefit.

[–]Troll_Stomper 0 points1 point ago

Just return something that you already paid off on a credit card. Voila, negative debt.

[–]hoser24 9 points10 points ago

I keep telling my wife that she needs to fight spam by going down.

[–]SuperShamou 3 points4 points ago

How do you know she doesn't?

[–]FeminineEminem 3 points4 points ago

No, I'm pretty sure I'm a wizard.

At the time the picture was taken, the effects of ALS were not visible. The cane he is holding in the picture above is what he described as his "Pimp Cane."

[–]Zovistograt 2 points3 points ago

On a somewhat related note, I decided to check out the wikipedia article for the DECtalk, his preferred speech synthesizer. The image associated with the article is probably one of the best I've seen for an electronic device in a while.

The Chicago Reader had an interesting interview with a current designer of retro lingerie. She says, the bras were pointed back then because the fabrics of that time could not be curved easily and still be strong; then the look became popular and designers further exaggerated it:

The trailer is excellent.
