This guy is a fucking legend, and more people need to learn from his actions because he has literally saved millions of lives.

[–]Jymotion 40 points41 points ago

it's not that people are uneducated of his actions, it's that most prioritize having wealth over giving it away

I agree. Otherwise I would have said:

I tried to tell people this before it was cool (joke). People would always complain about microsoft and their prices, but when you think about what he's doing with his money now, and all his money he is giving away when he dies you'll see that when you buy a microsoft product that money is going to charity.

(not sure how accurate that is now that he's not a big part of the company but it used to be the case)

Yet another reason to buy PC and not Mac ;)

[–]TechnoEquinox 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm okay with my "trickle-down" money saving lives. I'm not doing terribly, so the money would just go to more dice sets and LE 4.0 books.

Bill Gates, you are a gent among jerks.

[–]aalamb -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I find that people who espouse trickle-down economics are rarely the rich who give away such staggering sums of money. I'm not sure what Gates' exact politics, but I do believe he is left of center at any rate. Also take Warren Buffet, for instance. Also not a big believer in trickle-down economics.

This, combined with a lack of historical evidence that trickle-down reliably produces significant economic growth, suggests a certain amount of ulterior motive in promoting trickle-down economics.

[–]albinofrenchy 0 points1 point ago

Even when he doesn't work. Which is now. Because he is retired.

[–]stash0606 -1 points0 points ago*

False. He makes $33.18 a second. Here's how:

He was born October 28, 1955. Date today: March 05, 2012, but since today still has a while to go, atleast in the western part of the world, let's say it's March 04, 2012. Number of days between Oct 28, 1955 and March 04, 2012 = 20583.

In number of seconds, that is 20583 * 24 (hrs) * 60 (mins) * 60(seconds) = 1,778,371,200 seconds.

Bill gates net worth in $2011 = $59 billion.

Avg. money he makes every second: $59 billion/1,778,371,200 = $33.18.

Price of LP 570-4 (2010 base model) : $237600.

Amount of time Bill Gates would need to earn the cash: $237,600/$33.18 = 7160.94 seconds = 119.34 minutes = approx. 2 hrs.

*Disclaimer: His net worth has dropped 3 billion since last year, so he's making less now. Also, I haven't taken into account crucial differences between net worth and annual earnings. Net worth is not equal to liquid assets is my basic understanding. Also, I'm supposed to be re-reading up on my java docs, but deemed this as far more interesting. You just got Math'd.

[–]akfreedo 0 points1 point ago

Ok. Thanks for correcting me. I don't like running around with things I thing are true that are actually false.

I'm going to save 1 million children from Malaria

...

...

Done

[–]blahdeblah88 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know this is probably politically incorrect around these parts, but is saving a million children in the 3rd world really that great an idea?

Sounds good and makes people have a warm tummy, but will the country have the resources to support them later on? Is it really a good idea to intervene in another country like that but only in one narrow area?

Given the massive increase in population of the world, isn't saving lives going to speed that up until we all die of overcrowding anyway?

[–]AReallyGoodName 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In endemic areas, treatment is often less satisfactory and the overall fatality rate for all cases of malaria can be as high as one in ten. Over the longer term, developmental impairments have been documented in children who have suffered episodes of severe malaria. link

In other words 9 out of 10 sufferers of Malaria survive in the endemic areas with poor treatment. These survivors suffer huge symptoms and are much more of a burden than a healthy person but they survive and are capable of breeding none the less.

So Malaria isn't keeping the population low as much as it's crippling the population. So it's reducing the burden on resources by killing people off but it's raising the burden by producing sufferers who can no longer contribute as much.

The facts say that if mortality goes down the birth rate also go down.

[–]sophisting 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was going to make this point. There is a great TED talk about this phenomenon. So basically the reason these women have SO many children is because of the high death rate -- fix that and family sizes will shrink closer to that of western cultures.

[–]SilverZZ 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Could you explain this more? Why would mothers want to have children knowing they'll just die?

[–]sophisting 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As far as I understand it, its a security thing. If you are less certain your kid will live to adulthood you will want to have more children to increase the likelihood of passing on your genes.

edit: Here is that TED talk I mentioned.

[–]wOlfLisK 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If 9 out of 10 children die within the first 5 years of their life, having 2 children would mean that they would probably both die, leaving the family with no children. If they have 10, 1 of them will probably survive past 5. Life is all about passing on your genes, so having 1 living child is better than 0 almost all the time.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is actually an excellent point - it's essentially taking the same steps that the West took (immunization and sanitation) that first led to longer lifespans and higher productivity. A society burdened with constant death and disability across its entire population is incredibly inefficient. Those steps, plus birth control efforts (and, you know, stopping war and genocide) are the absolute necessary steps in helping Africa.

This article's pretty old but still kind of interesting:

http://www.forbes.com/2006/07/15/leadership-compensation-billionaires-cx_hc_0717millionaireminutes.html

Of course, the Gateses prefer more charitable pursuits, and they've received copious attention lately for their philanthropic efforts. Their foundation, which is frequently lauded for its investments in education and antipoverty programs, handed out $2,663 per minute last year. (2005)

[–]JoshuaLyman 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unfortunately, it looks like the Bill Gates wealth clock is no longer maintained. For those that don't know, there used to be a site that would track Gate's wealth as well as the relative wealth to median income. So, for example, there was a "how much money would have to be on the ground for it to be worth Gates' time to bend down and pick up", etc. The relative index was YOU: Bicycle, Gates: 747, for example. It was fairly entertaining for a one page site.

If we take that as 5 frames of video, and assume it's at the PAL video framerate of 25 fps (just because that's easier to divide than the film-standard 24 fps), that means it takes Bill Gates 1/5 of a second to save up for a Lamborghini.

It would take him longer to "Save up for a Lamborghini". Even at 5% interest 50 billion would make BG about 2.5 billion/year, or 50 million per week. Not bad, but then divide that by 7 and you've got about 7.3 million per day, now you figure that's maybe 24 Lamborghini's at 300K a piece. So it would take him like an hour to save up. Still a funny (re)post.

The man is worth 40 billion dollars, no way in hell he has an annual income of one million dollars. .1% interest on a billion dollars is one million dollars, so even at that rate he'd get 4 million dollars a year. And I'm pretty sure he can get a lot more than that....

That's a pretty expensive figure for a new Lambo- I could've sworn they were typically $100,000 less than that, somewhere in the $250,000s. Depends on the model, I suppose.

MSRP on a 2012 Aventador is $376,000 (although I'd assume that's without any optional extras). So that number is still too large, but not very far off.

Gates is worth approximately $53,000,000,000.

I just wanted to tell everyone that I laughed at this.
