  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

This is probably a lame question, but it's genuine: is there a fire danger? I'm guessing there're a lot of tile roofs and it's a wet time of year, but do some of the lanterns you know, fireball, back to earth?

I think most of them probably either go high enough that they snuff out, or just burn out on their own, or get blown out by the wind. I'd be very surprised if one of those managed to set even the baloon itself on fire, much less buildings or a forest.

Around here, when they came into fashion there were one or two housefires where the remains of such lanterns were found around the roofline. They're banned since then.

In Germany, it's not allowed to use them without confirmation from the local fire department at all because of the fire hazard. Wiki article about the law situation

They do not fall until the flame is completely out. The material the actual lantern is made out of is fire retardant. I did this as a date in Galveston,TX. She had so much fun, and people even pulled over to see it. We even let one group of kids do one because they seemed so excited.

I bought box of 50 of them a while back. I didn't see any flame drop off from them as they went up in to the sky. I did catch two when they fell straight down and they were smoldering a little bit.

I think if you choose a calm night it should go alright. When there up in the air nothing is going to bring them down apart from the flame going out.

it is real. everything in Bangkok is made out of cement and out side of there people are far enough apart that they don't set each others houses on fire. The dangerous/fun ones are the home made one with a roll of toilet paper soaked in gas that is used for fueling the lantern. I've seen them come down in a ball of flames.

It is called loy Krathong. They are sending there sins away on the lanterns and boats made out of banana leafs. They celebrate this every year. It's a lot of fun.

True story. I was working at a catering event for this old guy marrying his 20-something Thai mail order bride and they had lanterns like this they wanted to set off at the end of the wedding ceremony. I guess they hadn't taken into account the numerous trees and gustiness of the location . . . long story short the fire brigade had to be called out as a bunch of trees caught fire when a few of the lanterns were blown into the top branches of trees. My suggestion: don't set these off when in a relatively dried out area with numerous trees around on a breezy day.

These all have metal frames that do not biodegrade for hundreds of years. These metal frames end up in fields with farm animals in, cows munch in to them and break their teeth, cut their mouth or there insides or choke on them.

As the flame runs dry, they lower in the sky, they pass over roads and highways. Imagine it's night time and one of these hits your windscreen. Even if you don't crash in to it, the metal frames on the road can get caught on the wheels.
