Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

Makes me kinda proud to be living here now. Gotta love HK.

What's it take to find a job there?

From what I've heard, speaking the language is critical.

[–]z1o2 31 points32 points ago

maybe for a job, but as far as living/tourism I hear that it is almost as english friendly as Singapore (which is super English friendly and you should ever have any problem)

[–]Ogow 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is, you can get by perfectly fine speaking only english. The VERY few places(small shops) that don't speak any english at all you can still get by with basic gesturing. Only time I experienced that was buying some bread from a small bakery.

Are the cab drivers typically hostile to foreigners/English speakers? I've not spent much time in HK but on my way from Indonesia to the US this past December, I caught a taxi at the airport and dude was really irritated that I only knew the address, very little Chinese, and native English. Dude pulled over and made a big show about having to call the dispatch for an English speaker, etc. Think it was just a case of cabbie not wanting to deal with the dbag tourist? I really want to go back again because the city seemed awesome. Just been meaning to ask someone about this.

[–]ankyle 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You really dont need to take a cab anywhere, the MTR transit system is awesome.

[–]EvMund 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True that. Lived here for 13 years and never had a situation in which i couldn't make it on a minibus, kmb or mtr, except when i hadn't bothered to figure out a route.

[–]CorneliusJack 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know what I missed the most moving to Tokyo from HK? Fucking mini-bus, midnight 3am somewhere you can still find transit back home. None of that shit here.

Gonna come back and visit on Saturday, yea boi.

[–]FivePoppedCollarCool 8 points9 points ago

I don't speak a lick of Cantonese and I got along fine with English in HK.

I think you got a douchebag cab driver. That's all. I never had a problem with anyone in HK in regards to language.

[–]emilythegeek 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had a similar experience in Japan with an angry cab driver. I had the address written down in Japanese (print out of characters) and English. Cab driver was extremely rude and it made for a very uncomfortable experience. I stuck to public transportation the rest of the trip.

[–]Swordfish08 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As I understand it, Japan's address system is pretty terrible, something about the buildings being numbered on their block in the order they were built instead of in any kind of directional order...

So in his defense, that.

[–]TheHonestPolitician 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're generally not hostile, but more like impatient. They may not want to drive unless they know exactly where you want to go, and to do that they must understand you. Bring a tourism book with you and just point and they'll know. No need to speak to avoid confusion. Cantonese is a very 'loud' language; people tend to speak loudly much of the time but they're usually not yelling or being rude.

[–]Thide 1 point2 points ago

My first cab driver in HK thought i was fun talking to me (an english only speaker). He said the few thing he could in English, then he started to sing along to Japanese songs on the radio.

I also had a dbag cab driver who was just a plane asshole. he took me where i needed to go i paid thats it, i never let him bother me.

i suggest taking the mtr instead of a cab if you can next time. the MTR is the best public transportation ive ever used in my life... i miss it daily in Los angeles.

I had a hell of a time buying a condom there when me and my fiancee ran out, because I didn't want to resort to gesturing. True story (we were in Kowloon, which is less English-friendly than much of HK).

[–]superduperhero 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it's not.... there are plenty of jobs that do not require mandarin/Cantonese. English is one of the official languages of Hong Kong

[–]Tartan_Commando 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absolutely not, unless you're referring to English. There are hundreds of expats who speak not a jot of the language. I have a second cousin who was born and brought up in HK, white guy, doesn't speak a word of Cantonese.

I live in Shanghai and it's not always necessary to speak Chinese here in the majority of international companies.

HK has plenty of white people, it was British for 100 years remember.

[–]CaptainSpalding 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think he means that his cousin was wasting a huge opportunity to learn the language of where he was living. Apparently in Hong Kong it is common to see a blond-haired white guy speaking perfect Cantonese. If I lived there, I would not want to waste it by living in a bubble the whole time.

That surprises me to hear. I visited Kowloon a few years back and what struck me was how clean they kept the city streets. They had a cleaning crew come out super early in the morning to make it spotless. They had major fines for any sort of littering, even for pet droppings.

Perhaps downtown Hong Kong was a little different.

EDIT: Posted below first, but thought I'd put it here as well. Some pics showing some of what I saw and why I thought it more clean than not. These are all daytime shots, you can see clearly.

http://imgur.com/a/RonmW

My experience was that it was an amazing city, although we did spend more time in the downtown areas than the outer residential zones, and I will admit that many of those residential areas were crammed full and not as pristine looking. An example of that. Even those areas didn't hit me as super dirty, just people with a good bit less to live on than those downtown.

[–]PootenRumble 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah yes. I saw a lot of that, but most of it was on the outskirts of the city. Downtown streets are what struck me as particularly clean.

I'll see if I can find a relevant pic.

EDIT: Found a few that I had taken. Just sort of randomly selected, grabbed a few daytime pics that showed more what I saw.

[–]symmitchry 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are 100% correct. Hong Kong is filthy, and anyone who says otherwise has clearly never lived there. Perhaps it's cleaner than ... I dunno. Somewhere. But definitely dirtier than any Canadian city... (I guess that's not saying much ..)

[–]mad_catmk2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

'Clean' or 'Dirty' is all relative. Streets are probably pretty clean for a crammed ass city, but air quality and such is nastier than a fucking landfill.

Grew up in this city and definitely noticed the air quality turning for worse this past decade (and getting really really shitty too).

i was in hong kong for one night and we stayed in a hotel at the top of the hill with floor-to-ceiling windows - the view of the city at night was absolutely unbelievable. i sat there and just kept staring.

[–]karthur26 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Would you happen to remember what the hotel is called? I'd love to check it out.

[–]standupdouble 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not positive, but i think it was this one:

Bishop Lei International House 4 Robinson Road, Mid-Levels, Hong Kong

also, the address reminds me that it wasn't at the TOP of the hill, but part of the way up. there's this cool system of escalators that you ride and ride and ride to reach your level on the hill.

edit: here's a link to some pictures of the hotel rooms, and you can sort of get an idea of the view out of the windows.

[–]JustBeNice 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Bishop Lei is very affordable and in a great spot, right near the outdoor escalator that runs through the Soho bars/restaurants area and down into Central for your high end shopping etc. I lived next door for a couple of years and loved the location and views from my window

Jealous. I was there for about a day on a layover and was only able to get a cheap room across from some nightclubs on a narrow street. To this day I'm bummed out that I was so tired and jetlagged that I couldn't go out and do much. Really need to get back to that city for a decent length of time.

[–]z1o2 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

sometimes they overdo it on the colorization/exposure/post stuffs and and all, but yeah i think it is my favorite looking city. It beats out the two different looks of postmodernism (?) in Singapore and Dubai, and the relatively traditional New York City or Tokyo

chicago is nice but i like more bustle, and shanghai will hopefully have more attractive skyline with the shanghai tower distracting from pearl tower thing that I can't say I like that much. London or Onterio or wherever might be nice, but I'm looking for metropolis not cute little cities and towns (though those can be super nice, google Naarden)

[–]ninshin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

true, 90% of the time the pollution actually dulls the colors. mountains become grayish green, but when the wind starts blowing from the south, the skies clear up and it's incredibly beautiful. there's lots of natural beauty that not many people explore in hong kong

[–]ulterior_notmotive 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a fellow photographer, I've gotta say, it's just not a technically good photo. I don't think it is an HDR, but I do think it's a long-ish exposure, possibly with a neutral density filter which, with this subject, may well create a similar effect. It has been 'shopped to hell; I think the halos your friend is talking about come from bad dodging/burning technique. The photo lacks in-camera crispness. I guess the point is, coming from someone who really strives to make great pictures, that the good picture of this same scene is leaps and bounds above this one, and would truly be striking in every way; it's something that would really be worth getting excited about and deserved to be on the front page.

[–]karankshah 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

She can complain about it all she wants - fact remains that HDR makes the work accessible to the average viewer - the increased contrast makes everything pop that much more.

I'm no big fan of HDR, but it serves a purpose and carries its own style.

Hong Kong is beautiful in it's extensiveness but it stops there. I don't know if you've ever seen Chicago from the lake but it's architecture is absolutely breathtaking. As pretty as the picture of Hong Kong is, more than half of the buildings lack any sort of uniqueness. Just my opinion.

[–]Taibo 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Meh, I've been to both Hong Kong and Chicago, and I'm sorry but Hong Kong's skyline is just absolutely mindblowing in person. The fact that it's on the harbor and is backed up by mountains makes it all the more gorgeous.

[–]curation 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, if you make your way to the summit of one of the surrounding mountains, you can actually look down on the skyline!

[–]ninshin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you can see the uniqueness in height and shape from the other side of the harbor and personally i like that side. with the ifc and bank of china tower and hsbc tower there's plenty of uniqueness too. i have to say i think the chicago skyline is nice but hong kong beats it with the harbor and mountains and different architecture

[–]diulei 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everyone has to respect Chicago's skyline because it's the "birthplace" of the skyscraper, and definitely a very good one.

But echoing ishmetot's "not even close" sentiment... he's right. Here's a good resource on the world's "best" skylines from a numerical/mathematical standpoint. They take into factors number of tall buildings > 90m, height of tallest buildings, proximity of tall buildings, etc.

Of course, it's purely mathematical and not aesthetic (which is completely subjective). If you have 50,000 gray concrete buildings 400m high, it would "win" on this site.

[–]casual_sociopathy 1 point2 points ago

It would be interesting the break it down by commercial vs. residential. HK has an astounding number of apartment buildings that are taller than 90m. Kuala Lumpur probably has such a high score for the same reason. Bangkok OTOH is probably getting a much higher % of its score from commercial buildings. Having been to all these cities it's also amusing how Bangkok's skyscrapers are spread out throughout the city instead of in a singular downtown.

The real fun happens when your on the far side facing the city (Kowloon). Every night there is a synchronized light show where the buildings turn on and off their lights to music. Each major building gets an intro then they do a solo light show before moving on to the next building, like a band doing solos. Brilliant city. Great energy.

I use that same image as my desktop background. Except mine is tinted blue... Having dual monitors lets you use some of the most fantastic landscapes/cityscapes as backgrounds :D

Seeing that really tall building makes me want to base jump off of its tallest point into another office building, capture a powerful Chinese businessman, perform an explosive escape with some well placed explosives and a Sky Hook, then place said Chines businessman outside the Gotham Police Station.

Yeah, such a beautiful picture! I have been here for 5 years and this place is always surprising me in one way or another.... Sometimes it is the mixture of old style Chinese and modern architecture, sometimes it is the weird shit that local people eat. Anybody hungry for some chicken feet and deep fried fish skin?!?
