sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Oxford English Dictionary traces the word clown back to the end of the 16th century with roughly the same meaning as it has today. In the first few quotes it means something like "peasant, uneducated or foolish person", but quite soon after that it refers to "a foolish stage persona, jester".

They also note that it has several contemporary cognates in other Germanic languages, like North Frisian klönne ("clumsy, loutish person"). There are a number of words in modern Germanic languages that sound a lot like this and mean roughly the same thing, like German klumpen ("clod"), Swedish klumpig ("clumsy"), Danish klump klumpet ("clumsy, incompetent person").

Now, as you may have noticed, the English translations I but in the brackets up there also sound a lot like the words they're translating, so it's no big stretch to assume that clown, klumpen, klumpig, klump, as well as the English words clod and clumsy all derive from the same Germanic root.

That's as far back as the dictionaries I looked the word up in goes, but I think that if we use our noggins, we can trace the word back further. In order to do this, we note two things:

  1. All these Germanic words have an initial "k" sound. Now, there's a linguistic principle called Grimm's law (after Jakob Grimm, the fairy-tale guy) that basically states that when Indo-European words make the transition into Germanic words, certain consonants change in a regular and predictable way. One of these is that g changes into k, so it's not a big stretch to assume that the Germanic root for these words were once an Indo-European root beginning with a "g".

  2. Many of these words have senses (usually old ones) that refer in some way to the concept of "roundness". Take the German klumpen for instance: in addition to referring to a "clod", it can also refer to a "lump" or "clot" of something, like a "lump of clay". And again, look at the English words I just used ("lump" and "clot"), these are also very likely derived from the same source and also generally refers to round things.

If these two assumptions are correct, we should be able to find words from non-Germanic Indo-European languages that start out roughly gl- and refers to round things. Are there any?

There sure are! The most obvious one is Latin globus, the source for English globe, but there's also glutton (which derives from French and ultimately Latin). These words derive from the Proto-Indo-European root *gel-.

In summary: I'll bet anyone here my left nut that the word clown derives from the same source as clod, clumsy and lump, words which themselves derive from a Germanic root referring to a round lumps of something, and which ultimately come from the Proto-Indo-European root *gel-, meaning "roundness, curling up". So suck on that, OED, I just kicked your ass, etymology-wise!

(I just put waaaaaay more effort into writing this comment than I expected to when I started)

[–]CockroachED 4 points5 points ago

It may have something to do with the Uncanny Valley. Human brains are very good at recognizing facial features and detecting symmetry and ratio of features. In appearance clowns are very close to humans, but that slight deviation from humans norms causes revulsion. Also some are jerks and should be despised.

[–]corcyra 1 point2 points ago

The Joker...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think a lot of it has to do with clowns looking like death. Their faces are generally the bleached white, along with exaggerated eye sockets, that we associate with skulls. However, the bright lips and garish clothing and action are at odds with the thanic visage. We cue behavioral expectations from facial featues (young children are more likely to be afraid of "ugly" people than "beautiful" people), so it's likely the two different messages being presented confuses people. It doesn't tke a lot of work to make a normal clown face into an intentonally gruesome one. Also, a smile without attached eye crinkling is a grimace.

In the Danish one you should've written klumpet rather than klump. I am not sure, though. Don't throw me in linguistic hell.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks! Fixed now.

(other Danish people, can you confirm?)

[–]rcbl 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am not Danish, but my guess would be that klumpet means "the klump", while et klump would mean "a klump". The -et suffix is (generally, at least) the definite neuter article.

[–]RandomEtymology 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is what I thought as well, but if someone who knows the language corrects me, I usually don't quarrel with the correction.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Native Danish speaker here who also looked it up to be doubleplussure:

klump is a noun meaning a lump, as in clay. It can also mean a clumsy person, but that usage is not common nowadays.

(I notice the english word clod seems to have both meanings as well, at least according to http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/clod )

klumpet means klump-like; the -et here has the same effect as the -y in lumpy.

The definite article of klump is klumpen (the lump).

Anything else?

Haiku_robot is dumb. Maybe if he was modified so that he doesn't just take any sentence with 17 syllables and break it into three lines...that's not a fucking haiku. It doesn't make any sense to verbally pause between "has/stolen" and "passed/it." He needs better judgment.

I upvote you for the New Yorker cartoon. Nothing beats the New Yorker cartoons.

My favorite was the one showing a 12 year old boy at the beach, wearing a snorkel and holding up a piece of seaweed in front of his mother, saying "Regardez!" with the caption "A YOUNG JACQUES COUSTEAU AT THE BEACH"

[–]Ithm 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the joke here?

[–]wellhushmypuppies 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That Jacques Cousteau is considered the preeminent undersea explorer, and here he is with his first foray into the field, holding up something as common and benign as seaweed.

As with anything, it's always a funnier joke when you have to explain it.

[–]Czechxican 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's still not really making it funny. I mean at 12, that's kinda exactly what you would expect. Right?

[–]rafkamodie 2 points3 points ago

I think it's more of a "life humor" (made up that word) joke than a punch-line joke.

[–]Czechxican 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

After seeing the actually comic, I think the humor is that he is basically annoying the shit out of his mom, but later in life, the same quality will make him famous.

Edit: I don't think it's the commonality of seaweed, but rather the annoying childish tendency to make your parents "look at what I can do" kinda thing.

You'd probably really like this book of all of the New Yorker cartoonists' favorite rejected cartoons - I actually think there are a couple of volumes.

Really hilarious stuff. The one on the cover is one of my favorites: a really drunk, beaten up ventriloquist sits on the curb while his dummy vomits onto the sidewalk.

[–]wellhushmypuppies 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember that one! My husband got me a couple of these books a few years ago...the dog cartoons and doctor cartoons.

There were 2 other New Yorker cartoons that I found priceless:

  1. A cop pulls over a truck that has written on the side ME AND WALLYS PRODUCE and he says to the driver "I'm citing you for reckless grammar and driving without an apostrophe"

  2. A man and woman are at a table in a restaurant. Panel 1: (Man) Me. Panel 2-5: (Man) me is multiplied till eventually, Panel 6: (Man) ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME. Panel 7: (Woman) I. Panel 8: (Man) Yawn

I'd primarily be angry. While I respect joke commitment, the severity of the situation overshadows the comedy; dehydration is an extremely serious matter and can lead to death.

Until you're actually in the situation you can't be too sure.

Nah I'm pretty sure I'd kill him, drink his blood for hydration, and wear his skin as protection from the sun. That's a normal response right?

Meh, the possible comedic relief just before I die would be worth more than the extra hour of life froman ounce or two of water.

[–]IbidtheWriter 0 points1 point ago

The fact that the joke could kill you is what would make it so funny.

I have a feeling the clown will be voted OFF the island tonight.

Anybody know if there exists a subreddit with these kinds of one panel comics? I don't even know what it's called, but I enjoy them!

Considering they're both going to die anyway, a little humor to end it all isn't a bad idea.

The top two posts on reddit involve clowns. This is amazing.

bah, with 128 comments covering all aspects of this funny image... how am I supposed to make a meaningful enough comment to get uber upvotes ?

I think the joke works better without the caption.

What a class act.

Drink the clowns blood after you brutally end his life in your blind rage that occurred after you got sprayed with water.

[–]mb86 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But make sure the clown doesn't drink your blood too or you'll turn into a clown.

Funny, but the rhythm and pacing would have been better if the panel showed the guy drenched in water, after the fact.

In MY day, clown's brought joy to a child's heart. With their red noses and floppy shoes, they could brighten anyone's day.

They were in the desert for a day or two, then the clown revealed he had water the whole time, by squirting the other Guy with his flower.

A classic clown gag is to have you smell a flower on their shirt and as you lean in close, spray you in the face with water coming from a tube concealed in the flower. Not only is your face close but you're inhaling deeply and will probably choke. This reveals the true intent of clowns, death and terror.

[–]rafkamodie 0 points1 point ago

I only just now got the full INTENT of the joke! So, the clown WAITED until the other guy was faint and bored and he finally decided to smell the flower! Got it! Whew!

[–]wellhushmypuppies 5 points6 points ago

That's in the top 10 of stereotyped clown jokes...the squirting flower.

This is a prime example of a joke that would have been 1000 times funnier without the text.

My thoughts exactly. Plus the font just looks terrible. Not sure if that's standard New Yorker font but... yeah, does not fit at all.
