[–]abom420 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to be an arachnophobe,

then I realized they are the number #1 cause of death of mosquitos.

1 accidental "shit sorry thought you were a skin lamp your warm" vs. 10 - 12 repeated attempts to parasite off my life force of the mosquito?

sorry, logically it killed my fear. The spider is a noble insect who traps his prey, and kills those who attack us.

[–]Antox 17 points18 points ago

Yeah that's true but phobias are irrational. I live in Ireland so there are literally no poisonous spiders in the country. Yet I still run and squeal like a little girl when I see one.

Wasp vs. Spider

[–]Gozdilla 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He meant against a mantis. He was not trying to suggest that the only thing that can kill a spider is another spider.

[–]charlie_marlow 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I saw a black widow take its time with a wasp trapped in its web. The spider kept darting in to attach web strands to the wasp's abdomen until it had the wasp sufficiently immobilized so that it could move in for the kill.

Of course, when I had an 11th floor office with a window, I used to see wasps swoop in and pluck spiders from webs all the time.

Nah I'd really have to put my money on the mantis, even if it is counter-intuitive and not exactly a sure thing. Every nature show I've ever seen has taught me that wherever you find mantises, they're pretty much the apex predator among the insects. That's including the nature shows that weren't about bugs at all.

somewhere at the top of this thread someone said Mantis is top of bug food chain and is not to be fucked with. I have watched 4 Japanese bug fights now, and 3 of them involved Mantis getting owned, by a wasp, one of those horrifying cave spider things and a damn cricket. Mantis sucks.

Small bug: That big bug is so scary, I wanna get out of here. Maybe I can sneak out...

Big bug: What the fuck was that!? Maybe I'm trapped in a monster's cave, I have to kill it before it kills me!

*big bug catches small bug*

Small bug: "Aaaaah!!! I just wanna leave okay, let me go!"

*the tusks of the big bug breaks*

Big bug: "My tusks, they hurt!! What has it done to me!?!?!" I gotta get out of here!

Small bug: He is crazy, my only hope is to fight back

They're bugs. They're simple creatures, and have a few modes: eat, fuck, run, fight, sleep. So it's either fight or run. And sometimes fight and eat are the same thing.

But I enjoyed your little one-act play.

[–]partysnatcher 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're simple creatures, and have a few modes: eat, fuck, run, fight, sleep.

This is an interesting discussion. Insects are able to identify and appraise objects (a potential attacker, or food). An ant can for instance avoid a threatening object on it's way to an appetitive object. The same is true, for instance, for the housefly.

Insects may be able to classify the threat level of another bug, they are also able to identify environments, flight options and similar.

The insects probably have a more complex evaluation and understanding of the situation before they choose eat, fuck, run, fight, sleep.

But then again, internal verbal dialogue and assessment of the sanity of other bugs probably doesn't factor in.

No, you surely are not alone. I hate this kind of human separatism where we look past the brutality of the battle by separating the subjects' status in this world from ours. Whether its roosters, dogs, insects, or the like, its barbaric and in my mind cruel. We even sit and discuss the possibility of the participants feeling pain, as if that normalizes the fact that were are making them fight to the death for our enjoyment. Even when the participants are humans, they were slaves and prisoners, still thought less of. F'ing humans... recently I learned that if we removed all insects from the globe, our planet's biosphere would collapse in 50 years. If we removed humans, the globe would already be on its way to recovery in that same fifty years. And we make them dance for us?

[–]Terminus14 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok. We'll all remove ourselves and help the planet recover through our absence. You first.

[–]centerbleep 0 points1 point ago

of course it is... however, the far proximity of the bug species to our own allows for more testosterone, less oxytocin... or have you ever seen a vegetarian feel sorry for the plants we kill? it's always the cute furry ones that could almost be human babies...

[–]Chop_Suey99 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Last I checked, plants don't have nervous systems. But your point stands...fuck wasps.

[–]frenzyboard 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually.

Moreover, recent advances in the plant molecular biology have identified, besides classical neurotransmitters, also several proteins typical of the animal neuronal systems, such as acetylcholine esterases, glutamate receptors, GABA receptors, and endocannabinoid signaling components, as well as indicating signaling roles for ATP, NO, and ROS (Balusˇka et al. 2006b). Importantly, plant action potentials have turned out to influence processes such as actin-based cytoplasmic streaming, plant organ movements, wound responses, respiration, and photosynthesis, as well as flowering (Wagner et al. 2006; Fromm and Lautner 2007).

TL;DR: Science says you're full of it. ;D

[–]devicerandom 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Molecular biologist here. This is very interesting, but it doesn't mean they have a nervous system vaguely comparable with that of higher animals. They just have some interesting sensorial system, which is cool, or some electrical-potential signaling; but the level of complexity of metazoan nervous systems is usually waaaaaay beyond.

Also, I somehow doubt the authors since they end their conclusion with:

However, plants and animal share several very complex and conserved features that are missing from fungi and unicellular organisms, suggesting that they are phylogenetically much more closely related

While a paradigm revolution is always possible, the plant/animal relationship is quite well understood (there are loads of molecular evidence about that) and there is a massive load of data that indicates they're not close at all. There are different possible phylogenies for the Eukaryotes, this is true. But all of them cluster the opisthokonts (a group that includes animals and fungi) together, and plants on another lineage (sometimes in a group called archeaplastida, sometimes not), that diverged a lot of time ago.

cfr. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eukaryote#Phylogeny for example.

[–]TaylorWolf 1 point2 points ago

I agree we can't wrap our minds around how a plant lives, breathes and "thinks"... Its disappointing to me that people disregard them as an inanimate object. Plants have been proven to alter behavior and release different pheromones when people, predators or other plants are in the room.

[–]LtRavs 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It really annoys me that there are people out there that are willing to do things like this. Taking two living things and forcing them to kill one another. Its unnecessary and just a lot barbaric.

I just got 3 praying mantis egg sacks in the mail from ebay. Each one has hundreds of potential praying mantises inside! I will put them in our garden for natural pest control...

I approve! Mantids are my favorite, to the point where I am an adult and still am amazed whenever I stumble across them. I used to follow them around as a kid and just observe. Best summertime activity EVER.

They are the one of the most amazing creatures on earth to me. They seem to be aware in an unusual way for a bug. Pick one up, and they'll look you right in the eye, and up and down. Reminds me more of a tiny little alien, than a bug.

[–]lemonsareprettyok 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For sure. They are amazing. My sister and I used to call them aliens - took my mom forever to realize what we were talking about :)

[–]dieselphiend 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always wondered if others thought of them as alien-like as well.

[–]korvanos 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There was some book series where the first aliens humans meet look just like larger preying mantises.

[–]dieselphiend 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting. I once saw a page of LSD that had a gigantic mantis on a moon like surface fighting two tiny, little humans with laser beam guns.

"The Thousand Striking Spider technique! That's forbidden!"

"Ha ha ha. Your feeble Mantis style will be no match. Prepare to die!"

(lips out of synch)

As much as I am rooting for the spider the outcome would be that the mantis wins. All he has to do is hold down 2 of the spiders legs and he can chomp down, the spider has to get behind the mantis and not get any of his legs caught which is near impossible

I've got 10 bucks on preying mantis.

Mantis: Yo mama so hairy she look like she got Buchwheat in a headlock.

Spider: Shut up...stupid.

The stickman is already standing in the spider's web. You have to admire his spirited attitude.

Mantises don't give a fuck. I had a spider bro living in the little corner where the rail of the back stairs meets the house for like a month, grew to be about the size of a quarter. I happened to walk up right as a mantis was invading, he just bulldozed right through the dude's web. Never saw little spider bro again :/

It looks like it went through an oil painting filter or a cartoon filter or some other sort of digital effect.

Looks like it's a real picture that was edited quite a bit to match the focus and lighting of the picture it was added to.

Five times out of ten; they just try to intimidate each other and run away without fighting.

...also, 10 times out of 5 i make statistics up.

Seems like there are roughly 50 percent backing each. We have 2 choices: Someone get a mantis and a spider and do some back-cage wrestling or this needs to go to /r/askscience

A note on the image sharpening: Too much sharpening leads to undesirable "halos" around details. In this case, I can see your halo. Nice shot otherwise though!
