this would only be true if the other place was exactly the same as Earth. If the other place is worse, then he may not be going to a better place by default.

OK. I must be fuckin' stupid, but I don't get this comic, and since it has been reposted so many times, it is obvious a lot of people do.

Here's what I get from it: The world is worse off without them, so it means they are in a better place by default? We can't say they're in another place at all... most likely they simply don't exist anymore. So would this comic be saying that not-existing is a better alternative to living in a world sans the dead person? Kinda weird.

Imagine a good person is in a pub. He leaves the pub. The pub has become a little worse than it was with him in it. That says nothing about the place he is at after he left. The pub might have been located in a very bad part of town.

This is right there with the lack of logic expressed when we see ppl so sad when a religious person dies. If they believed that they've actually gone to heaven like they preach about then they should be stoked that person died. Dead, poof, heaven. And when the grieving ppl die they think they'll see them in heaven. So religious ppl should see death as a temporary inconvenience with all those piles of faith they've got...
